Reflecting on God’s Word “ZACCHAEUS, COME DOWN QUICKLY” Why do good things happen to bad people? Does this question strike you as odd? Aren’t we usually struggling with the bad things that happen to good people? True enough, but when good things happen to others, especially those we consider undeserving, it can seem natural to grumble. How do some people always seem to “get away with it,” while we spend our lives trying to act as God would want? As a tax collector, Zacchaeus cheated and got rich off of his own people. Why does Jesus want to be so nice to him? It’s just not fair! “TODAY I MUST STAY AT YOUR HOUSE” This problem of “good things for bad people” can cause as much distress as the problem of bad things happening to good people. Both touch on one of the deepest mysteries of human existence: Is the universe fair? Is God just? This is what is making the crowd grumble about Jesus favoring Zacchaeus. Why is Jesus befriending such a sinner? This is the third such complaint about Jesus in Luke’s Gospel (see Luke 5: 27–33 and 5:25–15). However, the encounter with Zacchaeus is different. In the other accounts, Jesus responds to his critics himself, but here, it is Zacchaeus who speaks up. Not only does Zacchaeus announce compensation for those he has cheated, he vows to give away half of his goods to the poor. At this point in the Gospel, Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem, where he knows he will be put to death. No one else that Jesus meets on this journey has responded as readily as Zacchaeus to his summons—first, to come down from the tree, then to “come down” from his wealthy lifestyle and the corruption that supported it. Although he did not travel to Jerusalem with Jesus, Zacchaeus clearly understood the demands of discipleship. This story gives us a hint as to why good things might happen to bad people: it is God’s patience, with Zacchaeus and with us as well, as God awaits our

response, for us to become the disciples God is calling us to be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Rejoice Counseling Apostolate - Highlight on Stress Stress is a normal part of life that can often get out of control. Learning to cope with stress can help you learn to enjoy life even when stressful situations occur. Did You Know? • Stress can either help us learn and grow or can cause us significant problems. • Stress releases powerful neurochemicals and hormones that prepare us for

action (to fight or flee). • If we don't act, the stress response can create or worsen health problems. • Prolonged, uninterrupted, unexpected, and unmanageable stressors are the

most damaging. Common symptoms include: Low energy, headaches, upset stomach, nausea, aches and pains, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and insomnia. How We Can Help: If you or a loved one suffers from one or more of the symptoms listed above, counseling can help by identifying stress from life events and daily stressors, teaching stress management techniques, and helping process stressful situations. A Parish Counselor is available on-site at our parish. For details and appointments, call (844) 295-3167 or visit www.MyParishCounseling.com.

DDDIOCESANIOCESANIOCESAN SSSERVICESERVICESERVICES FFFUNDUNDUND (DSF) 2019 (DSF) 2019 (DSF) 2019

More than 60 programs receive all or part of their funding from DSF and all funds are spent within Archdiocesan boundaries. These are programs and services that cannot be accomplished by one parish alone.

Parishes that DO NOT make goal will be billed by the Archdiocesan Accounting Office for their 2019 deficit.

DSF — Did You Know? Contributions to the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) are spent on

health care, food, clothing & shelter, education, counseling, religious formation, sacramental and faith formation programs,

prison ministry, hospital ministry, pregnancy support and adoption services, scholarships, St. Mary's Seminary and other very real needs that cannot be addressed individually or by one

parish alone.

A sample of the impact of your 2017 DSF Contributions.

♦ 59,897 elementary & 19,038 high school students were educated in CCE programs

♦ 12,011 adults & children received the Sacrament of Confirmation

♦ Catholic Charities served more than 71,047 clients, including 15,181 individuals assisted in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey

♦ San Jose Clinic was able to help and serve over 1800 patients in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

♦ 5,200 senior households were educated on elder issues

♦ 2,610 youth attended the 2017 Archdiocesan Youth Conference

♦ 3,460 couples were married in the Catholic Church

Matching Gifts – Did You Know? • One way to potentially double charitable gifts

given is through matching gifts. DSF qualifies for many matching gift programs (usually in the support of education, Catholic schools, the work of Catholic Charities or San José Clinic).

• Check with your employer’s Human Resources or Benefits Department to see if your company has a program, as well as a process and forms needed to have your contributions matched by your employer.

• A list of companies that have donated to the Archdiocese in the past can be found at: www.archgh.org/dsf
