Third GradeNewsletter for the month of November 2013

Math Our unit for November is Unit 5: Use Addition and Subtraction. During this unit students will:

1. Be able to round and estimate numbers

2. Understand how information is organized in a table and use a table’s information to ask and answer questions.

3. Solve word problems with extra information and hidden information.

4. Solve word problems that have more than one step to solve.

5. Create, read and intepret picotgraphs and bar graphs.

6. Find the mode (number that is seen most often) and range

(take the largest number and subtract the lowest number) of data.

7. Create, read and interpret tally charts, frequency tables and line plots.

We will also do Unit 6 during the month of November. This unit helps students to develop algebraic thinking through patterning. We will explore number and geometric patterns, flips, slides and turns, and we will use our patterning skills to solve problems.

Addition and Subtraction Math

FactsLater in the year students will being learning multiplication and

division. We know that addition and subtraction is closely related to multiplication and division which is why we continue to have our students work on their addition and subtraction fast facts. Please help your student at home by using flashcards and games to reinforce these addition and subtraction skills and help them get ready for multiplication and division.

Third Grade Musical DATE CHANGE

The date of the third grade musical has changed to February 13th. There will be a daytime performance at 1:30pm and a night time performance at 7:00pm. So mark your calendars for a good time!!

ReadingVisit our classroom websites to find many learning resources in the area of reading that students play at home that focus on different comprehension skills that we teach at school. On each classroom website you will be about to find the weekly Focus Wall from the Journeys Reading Curriculum, the Student eBook and the weekly Leveled Readers. We also have links from our websites to get to each student’s ThinkCentral Account. ThinkCentral is that website that lets students log into both the Journeys Reading Curriculum and the Math Expressions Curriculum. Each student has their own user name and password:

Username: 23 last-name then first-name-initial

Password: Uppercase-first-name-initial then student id number then lowercase-last-name-initial

For example, Maggie Torres would be...Username: 23torresmPassword: M123456t

Once on ThinkCentral, students could look at grades of tests they have completed and have another opportunity to read the different stories from the student ebook.

SpellingThis week students have fourteen weekly words to study. There are many traditional ways to study spelling word, but there is also amazing amount of ways to study online. One way we

use at school and students could use at home is SpellingCity. Ask your student how he or she finds SpellingCity on our classroom websites then students could play games using the weekly words. We are sure there are many other ways to work with the spelling words online, just type in “Online Spelling Game Generator” to get many more options. You can find each week’s words from the Reading Family Letter that comes home every week, or from the Focus Walls we post on our classroom websites.

MathA great way to continue to practice math concepts at home is by your student logging into their Vmath account. Vmath is a web-base program that helps students practice math concepts through lessons, practice and games. Each student has an account. Students can reach the log-in screen from our classroom websites.

While your student is on our classroom websites check out the additional learning resources for math. We have many math links that students could go to to play games to sharpen their math skills. As well as the Math eGlossary is

on our classroom websites to look up those forgotten-in-the-moment math vocabulary words OR have students log into their ThinkCentral account like they do in reading to also view a copy of the Math Student Book.

WritingWe do all of our writing on Google Docs. Students can log into their accounts to show you what writing they are doing at school and what scores they are receiving. Again, each student has their own user name and password:

Ways to Support Your Student at HomeWe use our computers every day in third grade which makes us very techie! We blog, write, draw, games, practice math, take online tests, read and so much more. If you have access to a computer at home or at the public library we would like to give you some ideas on how to support your student at home using technology.

MatematicasLa unidad que estudiaremos en las matemáticas es de líneas, segmentos, y quadriláteros.

1. Medir líneas de segmentos en el perímetro de las figuras.

2. Aprender el significado de una línea, segmento, líneas paralelas, líneas perpendiculares, líneas opuestas y lados adyacentes

3. Conocer la diferencia entre las figuras paralelogramas, y las formas como el rectángulo, cuadrado y el rombo

4. Dibujar paralelogramos rectangulos

5. Clasificar y dibujar quadriláteros

6. Ser capaz de redondear y estimar el número

También haremos Unidad 6 durante el mes de noviembre. Esta unidad ayuda a los niños a desarrollar sus habilidades de algebra por medio de hacer patrones (patterns). También vamos a explorar patrones geométricos, unos volteados, y de diferentes formas, usaremos estas habilidades para resolver problemas.

Tarjetas de Suma y Resta

Más adelante en el año los estudiantes se están aprendiendo multiplicación y división. Sabemos que la suma y la resta está estrechamente relacionado con la multiplicación y la división

por lo que seguimos teniendo nuestros estudiantes trabajan en sus sumas y restas rápido. Por favor ayude a su hijo en el hogar mediante el uso de tarjetas y juegos para reforzar estas destrezas sumando y restando y ayudar a prepararse para la multiplicación y la división.

Tercero Grado MusicalFECHA CAMBIA

La fecha de la tercero grado musical ha cambiado al 13 de febrero. Habrá un espectáculo durante el día a las 1:30 pm y un espectáculo la noche a las 7:00 pm. Así que marquen sus calendarios para un buen tiempo!

LecturaVisite la pagina de internet de nuestra clase para encontrar mas recursos que le pueden ayudar en el area de lectura. Los estudiantes pueden jugar en casa y enfocarse en diferentes habilidades de comprención que enseñamos en la escuela. En la pagina de internet de cada clase encontrara el Enfoque Semanal de Lectura del plan de estudios Journey’s, el libro en internet y el libro de cada nivel semanal. También tenemos enlaces de nuestra pagina para la cuenta de cada estudiante Central de Pensamiento (ThinkCentral). La cuenta Central de Pensamiento es la pagina de internet que les permite entrar a los Planes de Estudios Journey’s de Lectura y Expresiones de Matemáticas. Cada estudiante tiene su cuenta de usuario y contraseña.

Una vez en Central de Pensamiento, los estudiantes pueden ver las calificaciones de los examenes que han terminado y tienen otra oportunidad de leer las historias diferentes del libro de internet.

MatemáticasOtro metodo maravilloso para continuar prácticando los conceptos de matemáticas es que los estudiantes entren a su cuenta de Vmath. Vmath es un programa en la computadora que ayuda a prácticar a los estudiantes conceptos de matemáticas a traves de lecciones, práctica y juegos. Cada uno de los estudiantes tiene una cuenta. Mientras su estudiante este en la pagina de nuestra clase revise los recursos de aprendizaje para matemáticas. Tenemos muchos enlaces de matemáticas que nuestros estudiantes pueden usar para jugar juegos y mejorar sus habilidades en matemáticas, asi como también pueden ver el glosario que esta en nuestra pagina para ver vocabulario olvidado de matemáticas ó pueden entrar a su cuenta de ThinkCentral comó lo hacen en lectura para también ver el libro de estudiante de Matemáticas.

OrtografíaTenemos 14 palabras para estudiar cada semana. Hay muchas maneras de estudiar las palabras, pero también tenemos muchas maneras asombrosas de estudiarlas en línea. Una manera que usamos en la escuela y los estudiantes lo pueden hacer en casa es SpellingCity. Preguntele a su estudiante como encuantran SpellingCity en la pagina de nuestra clase, los estudiantes pueden jugar juegos usando las palabras de cada semana. Estamos seguros de que hay muchas maneras de prácticarlas en línea, solo escriba “Online Spelling Game Generator” para que les de mas opciones.
