Connie has a broad background in health careand its administration including home, hospital,nursing home, and hospice care. She hastestif ied in Washington for the SenateSubcommittee on Aging. For more than adecade she has been the FloridaRepresentative for the National FamilyCaregivers Association. Connie’s research anddedication to the issues of family caregiversled to her active advocacy and pragmatic role.In 1997 she began Volunteers for theHomebound and Family Caregivers and in 2006initiated the first US program to identify andsupport middle school children who are caringfor ill, aging or disabled family members so thatthey can have success in school and in theirlives. It is for the expansion of this work thatduring 2009 Connie was awarded theprestigious lifetime Ashoka Fellowship as wellas the Purpose Prize.

We were cheered on continuously by residentsas we passed through their neighborhoods, students as we passed by their schools, familiesof survivors, families of walkers, and families of those who didn’t survive.”

Rules of Golf MonthNovember is “Rules of Golf Month” at BrokenSound’s Club Course. This is an initiative tohelp all our golf members become more familiarand comfortable with the rules of golf. events as well as enhancing the Old Courseexperience for you.

This offseason a formal Old Course Men’sLeague was organized. There are 183members and with the opening day onNovember 7th, it looks to be off to a strong start.Men’s events will be played Monday morningsusing a shotgun start format throughout theseason. There will be fifteen events includingthree mixers using varying weekly formats tocater to the membership.

The Old Course Women’s League has 139members this season and the opening day ison November 3rd. There will be a total of twentytwo events including the member guest. Therewill also be a nine hole league featuring twelveevents.

The golf shop has new men’s and ladiesapparel for the season from some of theindustry’s leading companies. Please stopby and check out these new fashion lines.Additional collections will be continuallyadded throughout the year.p

We are also pleased to announce that thisseason will feature demo days from companiessuch as Taylor Made, Callaway, Cobra, Pingand Adams Golf. Our Professional Staff will bethere to assist you in every way possible duringthese demo days.

The course has been groomed for the seasonand is in great condition. We ask that you helpus keep it that way by repairing ball marks,filling divots and raking bunkers. We welcomeyour thoughts and should there be anythingwe can do to enhance your Old Courseexperience, please let us know.

MAINTENANCE Joseph Hubbard, CGCSOLD COURSE : As with the Club Course, we are awaiting the remainder of the flowers we ordereda few months ago to come in for the beds around the golf course and finish up our landscape plantingplan. We selected plants to better handle any unexpected extremely cold weather we have had toendure the past couple of winters. The color selections will be varied and should be dynamic.

The composting project will continue year round to stay on target of building quality organic mixwith the sand base soil the Old Course is built on. The fairways have already shown a definiteincrease in density and ability to hold more moisture and nutrients in the profile. The savings ofthe composting will multiply exponentially each year.

Joe Hubbard, CGCSWe are getting into thecooler winter months now,with nonstop play, member’stournaments and of course,the holiday festivities will beupon us. We want everyoneto enjoy themselves whileout on the golf course andremember to leave the

course better than when you found it by fixingball marks, filling divots and raking bunkers.

ALERT:The traffic rope can be left off each golf courseto a bare minimum if, and only if, all members:

1. Adhere to the rules of 90 degrees in fairways

2. Scatter when coming off the tees (not followingdirectly in the path of other carts unless directed bysigns or a few ropes)

3. Other than the handicap flagged players, no one isallowed around the side or backs of greens during theseason. We have designated parking spots aroundthe green for handicap players. On the Club Coursehandicap players are not to drive across the approachroped areas, you must exit 90 degrees to the path andwhen adjacent to the parking balls, drive up to themparking on the outside of the balls away from the green.

4. Holes #3, #8 and #14 Old Course Par threes andholes #3, #12 and #14 Club Course Par threes are cartpath only for ALL players. NO CARTS SHOULD BEOFF THE PATH. Hole #12 Old Course is the exceptionfor the handicap player to the right, only. Hole #7 ClubCourse, all players may go to the right of the approachmarkers back to the coquina path behind the green ormay opt to the left on the concrete or coquina paths.However on this hole, handicap players must still stayon the path around the green to park.

Note: Severe cold weather, wet areas if inclementrainfall should drench the golf courses etc. coulddictate more roping if needed.

hLearnin’ With Vernon Tips & Strategies For Fun & Successful Tennis!Assumptions

You know that saying: “Assumptions make a…..” well, you know the rest!

Here’s where we throw this cliché to the wind. There are a couple ofassumptions you must make in order to play at a consistent level.

1. Assume that your ball is going in- You must make this assumptionso you don’t over analyze your shots or become a spectator (Is it in, is itout, I didn’t hit the ball that well etc.)

2. Assume that your opponent is going to get the ball back- Assuming your opponentswill get the ball will keep you perpetually prepared for the next shot. Sometimes you may hitwhat you believe to be a really great shot but you are so busy patting yourself on the back thatyou don’t recognize that your opponent has actually hustled to get the ball and it’s coming backat you! After hitting your shot don’t stand there admiring how great your shot is and believingthat your opponent is not getting it back, make the correct assumption… remember, you canalways sign autographs later!

Broken Sound Club is partnering with the Arthritis Foundationto offer the Arthritis Foundation Exercise and Tai Chi program!

Women’s ClubWell, here are the details you’ve been waiting for: The 2011-2012 Season packed with lots ofgreat speakers and terrific outside trips.

Nov. 17th: our kickoff event is the Gala Fashion Show and Luncheonwith Susan Constanza, coordinator, bringing 18 stores showing off their newest fall and winterfashions. Always a sell-out event!

Dec. 8th: out-of-club trip to the New World Symphony Hall in Miamito tour the magnificent Frank Gehry-designed building and to observe a symphony rehearsal inprogress. The bus will leave from the Clubhouse at 8:15 am in order to arrive by 9:30 am. Lunchwill be at the beautiful YUCA restaurant for a Cuban chicken or salmon meal. The cost for the dayincluding bus, tour, rehearsal, and lunch will be only $47. To reserve your space call and sendcheck to Eileen Batt at 241-2670. Hurry! The seats will go quickly!

Dec. 5th and 7th: CLOTHING DRIVE to benefit AVDAPlease donate “like-new” clothes and accessories for women starting out or re-entering theworkplace.
