Welcoming Sr. Sonia
Sr Sonia Jagpal, has Alhamdulillah, settled well into Grade 3B. She welcomes par-ents to communicate with her regarding all 3B matters.
I chanced to watch a very interesting documentary on TV a few weeks ago entitled
“Hyper Parents & Coddled Kids” on Doc Zone CBC . The documentary explores
current parenting practices in North America and questions whether such practic-
es are preparing the upcoming generation for the many challenges along the way.
A very inspiring documentary, leaving lots of room for thoughts.
If you google the documentary title, you will find reviews and other articles writ-
ten about this documentary too. Extremely worth reading and sharing with
friends!
Sr Courtney Shrumm (Gr 6) recommended this as an important reading for all par-
ents: http://shine.yahoo.com/team-mom/10-things-never-kid-39-teacher-

Emergency Preparedness—Are you ready for the
“BIG ONE”
On October 18, 2012, we joined thousands of British Columbians in an earthquake drill. Students practiced safety response—Drop, Cover, Hold. Recent earthquakes along coastal areas of BC remind us all too clearly earthquakes are a real threat to this province. We have started to check out student personal emergency kits which we urged parents to help us put together for each child 2 years ago. We have already started communicating with parents about steps to be taken to ensure safety for all children. Please respond to all such communications promptly.

D.E.A.R.
October is National Library Month. We dropped everything and read at 9:15 a.m. on October 22. The school library also launched a Book Mark De-sign Competition with small prizes for the best in each class. In the Islamic Studies program, a beau-tiful book mark with a hadith was given to each intermediate student.
VOLUNTEER WORK
The following are available- please call the school office to sign up:
Organizing Arabic class library books – must be able to write Arabic – can be done from home
Supervision – especially salaat time in the masjid with the boys; general supervision throughout a school day
for both buildings and all grades
Library – shelving and labelling books (Tuesdays only)
To involve more parents in helping out around the school, a letter will be out soon for sign up to specifically help
the teachers of your children. Your prompt response is important.
Islamic History Month
October is Canada’s Islamic History Month. In keep-
ing with this year’s theme, children are looking at Is-
lamic architecture and calligraphy. Come and immerse
in our rich culture by visiting the many displays
around the school.
LIBRARY UPDATES
Sr Colleen Blackwell (Gr 1B) is again our Literacy Advocate this year . Sr Colleen works closely with Sr Asmae,
our librarian, to enhance literacy interest and development in the school. This year, they are arranging thematic
displays in the library each term with activities and prizes to turn more and more of our students into enthusias-
tic readers.
Term 1 displays began with Hajj and Islamic History Month theme – Architecture and Calligraphy. This will be
followed by Canadian children’s authors.
PAC GIFTS
Although this is just the beginning of the school year, the PAC is already very active in looking after the needs of
the school. The first gift we received this year was 10 oscillating tower fans – very quiet and efficient in cooling
down the many hot afternoons in late summer. PAC also arranged for a delicious hot lunch of chicken burger, fries
and juice. Just this week, PAC has distributed Eid gifts to all the children.
We pray that more parents will support PAC activities and become active members of this very diligent group
working for the interests of the school.
