God offers us wisdom, but God does not force her upon us. She is found anrecognized only by those who are alert to the things of God and who activeseek her out. Love of God and of neighbor is the lamp that must be burninbright. The oil of our baptismal anointing is the source and encouragementhat will let the light of Christ burn brightly. As we prepare to receive the newtranslation of the Roman Missal, will our lamps be burning brightly, or will wexperience an oil crisis?

All things come from you, and of your own have we given you.(1 Chronicles 29: 14)

On this weekend nearest to the Feast of Saint Charles we award the OrderOrderOrderof Saint Charlesof Saint Charlesof Saint Charles to a number of our parishioners - people who have beeninvolved in the parish for a significant amount of time and who have beeninvolved in more than one ministry. You would think that we would run out

of such good people, but each year we realize that men and women whostarted in a small way have now begun to give themselves with a passion tothe service of God. Their lives are examples of good stewardship, and almostalways the Sunday Mass Gospels at this time of year are related tostewardship. They speak of the Lords second coming and the Day ofJudgment, and they challenge us to think about how we have used the goodgifts that God has given to each one of us.

Stewardship is about much more than raising money. Its really a way of life, recognizing that God has given us everything we have so that we should thankHim by responding to his generosity. This attitude of gratitude becomesconcrete when we return to God a portion of our time, talent and treasure. Ifyou are reading this, the chances are that you already thank God by givingtime each week to worship. That regular, faithful attendance at Sunday Mass

is the foundation of our Christian lives. Recently I have also been encouragingpeople to be generous in sharing their talents. God gives us varied talents -some of which we only discover later in life - and He wants us to use theseabilities for our own good and the good of others, in imitation of his owngenerosity. When we had the Fall Festival three weeks ago many of youvolunteered, and the event was a success because you cooperated witheverybody else and didnt object if you found yourself with the unglamorousjob of selling soda or picking up trash. But there is a difference between doinga job and becoming involved in ministry.

Ministry is the conscious and intentional harnessing of our talents in theservice of God and his Church. Its a deepening of our commitment to theparish, so that we are no longer just an outsider making use of the churchfacilities but an insider committed to the life and growth of the community.

There are many opportunities. Many people start by getting involved inliturgical ministries such as choir, reader, Eucharistic minister, sacristan orusher. They are relatively easy because you minister within the Mass, whenyou would be in church anyway. However, choir membership also means acommitment to a weekly rehearsal and a job like sacristan requires ameticulous eye for detail - if you forget a crucial item, the Mass could grindto a halt! Pastoral ministries, like visiting the sick and teaching religiouseducation, require a big heart and a dash of courage; even those who work atthe Brothers Keeper food pantry and thrift shop need an extra measure ofpatience and kindness. In addition there are practical ministries like helpingwith office administration or art and environment - a lot of very special talentgoes into making the church beautiful.

I know that when you have a young family your stewardship is concentrated

on caring for them and raising them in the faith; that, indeed, is yourvocation. Yet we are blessed at Saint Charles with a number of young parentswho have involved themselves in ministry, and I suspect that the generous useof their talents actually enriches their families. Similarly, you could argue thatthose who have just retired deserve to rest. Yet I have noticed that those whothen begin to give themselves to ministry actually seem to take on more life.In giving they receive, and it seems to keep them young! Please think aboutwhat you could do. Please take that extra step in your Christian life. If youwould like to discuss the possibilities, contact our Ministry Coordinator,Earlene Mohr, on 407-293-9556 extension 104 or [email protected].

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share.(1 Timothy 6: 18)

Lord, Lord, open the door for us!But he said in reply, Amen, I say to you,

I do not know you. Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor

    the hour. Matthew 25:11-13

My Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

On this Thirty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, we hear the Gospel of St. Matthew, where Jesus admonishes us to stayawake, to follow God faithfully and not deter from the teaching of the Lord. It is appropriate then that we pay heed to theGospel and are attentive to our sisters and brothers in Christ who are in need. We cannot be deterred by the distractions ofdaily living and overlook these people of God. This weekend, November 5-6, I ask that you respond generously to the secondcollection for Catholic Charities of Central Florida.

Because of your generous support through the years, Catholic Charities of Central Florida has evolved as the number one se-cond responder for those affected by natural disaster and the premier social service agency in Central Florida. While the annu-

al Our Catholic Appeal and the most recent Alive in Christ campaign also supports Catholic Charities of Central Florida, thissecond collection is used exclusively for direct assistance to the needy. It helps the working poor with mortgage payments, utilities, rent, food and other requirements of maintaining a home and keeping families together during difficult times.

In the central region, a physically disabled 45 year-old woman lost her mother, sister and brother in the same year and wasleft with expenses that depleted her monthly income. Your loving embrace carried her to manage her expenses and work apart-time job to supplement her income.

In the northern region, a recently widowed father of three young children was referred to Catholic Charities for help with hisutility bill. During this time, he was laid off from his paramedic profession. Payment of the utility bill was important becauseone of his children needed a breathing machine which required electricity. You delivered hope to this family.

In the western region, you brought comfort to an older overwhelmed, disabled couple who received assistance for their rentand electricity bills. They now ask to become volunteers for Catholic Charities of Central Florida for being there when noone else would help us in our worst days.

In the eastern region, a middle-aged man had broken his legs from a three-story fall. He was displaced without a permanenthome. You gave the gift of healing offering a life of pride and self-sufficiency through appropriate medical care, a full-time joband an apartment which he can afford.

In the southern region, a family of five moved to Central Florida for the fathers new job, only to find upon arrival that theposition had been cut because of downsizing. Your kindness assisted the family with rent payments and referrals until the fa-ther found another position. Now, the mother is also working part-time and the familys situation is stabilized.

There are countless stories of people in need who have seen the face of God through your wondrous generosity. Heed the

Lords words to stay awake so that the Lord will know of your resplendent works and the door will be open to you as youhave opened it for those who are unable. I thank you for your gift to Catholic Charities through the second collection theweekend of November 5-6.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend John NoonanBishop of Orlando
