Exciting launch of BASEcamp career mentoring
program for Bellingen’s youth
BASEcamp - a career mentoring program for high school students was launched
with great excitement to the community on Wednesday 19th November at a Bellingen Chamber of Commerce breakfast held at the Bellingen High School.
The breakfast showcased the culinary talents of the school’s Year 12 Hospitality students
who catered the event and was attended by over 30 business and community members. BASEcamp is the latest activity of the Bellingen Shire Business and Education Alliance (in 2013 they ran The Big Idea –entrepreneurial learning program) and is a partnership initiative with The Bellingen Chamber of Commerce.
The program is scheduled to start in 2015 and will run four key career mentoring events across the year. BASEcamp aims to give participating students attending Dorrigo and Bellingen High Schools opportunities to explore a broad range of careers and pathways to assist them to make informed decisions about their futures. A representative from the Alliance, Cath Cosgrave, Youth Directions Inc. said “The Alliance is delighted by the warm and enthusiastic response received by business and community towards BASEcamp with eleven mentors signing up already at the launch”.
If you are a local business, trades-person or professional, working or retired, and
are interested in participating as a mentor in the 2015 program please see www.bellingenchamber.com for more information or email [email protected]. Interested mentors need to submit an Expression of Interest Form before Wednesday 10th December 2014.

Tonight’s the night! The Clappers are on in the Bellingen High MPC from 6.30pm and is the night the people of Bellingen High School once again don their finest threads and get frocked up for the annual Clapper Awards. For the uninitiated, the Clappers are an annual film festival that showcases our students’ cinematic prowess.
There is a prize for the best dressed female and male audience member and another for the most glamourous couple. But be warned, you need to aim high, the transformations onto our red carpet are astounding, we scrub up well! Keep an eye out for photos in our next Newsletter.
The audience gets to choose their favourite film of the night in the ever popular “People’s Choice” category. There will also be some great music and the Canteen will be operating.
Doors open and photos on the red carpet start at 6.30pm, get there early, films start at 7pm sharp. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults and $25 for families, so come along and check out the local talent! Everyone’s welcome.

Down at the Ag Plot
G’day from the Ag plot.
We’ve had quite a busy time at the plot of late with a variety of interesting learning opportunities provided for our students.
Firstly, the sheep were sheared with some of our students choosing to have a go at this back-breaking work themselves. Secondly, a mixture of agricultural and non-agricultural Year 10 students took advantage of learning to safely ride quad bikes during the Futures Program. Thirdly, one of our cows successfully birthed a new heifer (and a late lamb arrived too!), then finally the Dorrigo Show came and went in a haze of heat, dust and flies. Phew!
I would like to take this opportunity to commend all Bellingen High students who elected to get involved with these events for their good will, cooperation and patience under trying weather conditions.
We are still waiting on a good drop of rain as the paddocks and plants in the garden are dying from lack of moisture. Time to do a rain dance!
STOP PRESS….it worked!!
Dorrigo Show 2014
After an early start on Saturday morning, students and staff assembled at the plot for a cool and misty 5am haul up the mountain. Luckily, the mist hung around whilst the cattle were washed and groomed, only lifting after all competitors had breakfasted and changed into posh show gear.
The first classes began as the heat roared in and the flies started buzzing. Students and cattle alike were stoic in the face of punishing conditions pulling two 2nd places, then going on to get a 1st and Reserve
Champion.
Bellingen High produce (herbs, cucumbers and eggs) wilted slightly in the main pavilion but still managed 2nd places in the face of stiff competition from Dorrigo High School and Dundurrabin Primary School.
The temperature was in the high thirties by Grand Parade time, students and cattle braved the conditions with heads held high as another successful Dorrigo Show came to an end.
Many thanks go to the following people who untiringly support the Agriculture department and our involvement in local shows:
Mr Nick Hiller and his family for filling in all the show paperwork and cattle wrangling.
Mrs Amanda Lockman for organising all the show gear.
Mr Tony Goodwin for lending his support on the day.
Mr Peter Goode for delivering produce prior to the show.
Mrs Maida Bugg for her encouragement and wise counsel regarding all things Red Poll.
Finally a big shout-out to the winning Bellingen High School Show Team - Lia Grosvenor, Grace White, Jacob Ladi and Jordan Goolmeeze. Well done folks, you did BRILLIANTLY!!
Finally, ‘Moooooo’ to Holly and Harper (our cows pictured below right)
Check out the school’s website for more photos. Hooroo ‘till next time!

Australia Day Awards
Awards are an integral part of Australia Day, they aim to recognise outstanding achievement during the past year and/or contribution to the local community over a number of years.
These unique individuals have given their time freely for numerous organisations and are always the first to offer support and assistance to the members of the community.
Australia Day celebrations, which are held on 26 January each year, are an opportunity to recognise our community achievements, to enjoy the artistic talents of residents, welcome our new citizens and to meet our Australia Day Ambassador.
Australia Day 2015 may seem a long way off however planning for the Bellingen Shire 2015 Australia Day celebration and Community Awards Ceremony is underway. The day’s activities will commence with a family beach fun run and community breakfast. The awards and citizenship ceremonies will be held at Mylestom and commence at 9.30am with entertainment to follow on into the early afternoon.
Mayor Mark Troy said “Australia Day provides an opportunity for all of us to celebrate our wonderful country and recognise and thank those special community members who give so much to our local communities plus recognising sporting and other outstanding community and creative achievements.
I encourage everyone to give some thought to a community member, team or community organisation that they believe should receive recognition for their voluntary work and achievements”.

Sport News Boys Futsal
Bellingen High took two boys teams to the Senior Australian Futsal Championships
recently held at Oxley, near Brisbane. The Championships brings teams together from
Cairns in the north to Sydney and Melbourne in the south. Bellingen High School had
the largest amount of teams at the Championships. The teams were playing from 8am
through to 8pm over the three days, which in itself is a big challenge.
19 Years Boys The boys entered the nationals having won both the local and
regional competitions. But, this was going to be a challenge as many of the group
were playing futsal for the first time this year, especially considering they had to play
8 x 50 minute preliminary games!!
Their first game was against Corinda State High, who ended the tournament as
champions. The game was a close battle with Corinda coming out 6-3 winners. The
boys continued to do well in the rest of their games but victory eluded them. This
group will stay together for next year’s tournament and many lessons will have been
learned in preparation.
16 Years Boys The team began the tournament against ‘local’ opposition St
Clares High School, Taree. There was a bit of rust in the system after the long
journey and it took the team a while to get going - the boys were 3-2 down at half
time. The second half proved far more pleasing for the boys, scoring 5 unanswered
goals to win 7-3.
Their second game was the one that influenced the outcome of the tournament for the
team. Playing Camden Haven, a team that they have defeated in the past, the team
were only able to achieve a 7-7 draw.
The second day was by far the teams finest, playing what many onlookers said were
the two best games of the tournament. The first game was against Harristown State
High, a Football Academy. The opposition was highly skilful and very determined. But
Bellingen playing fluent passing futsal, defeated them 6-2. Later in the day the boys
took on Calvary High, a team that has proven somewhat of a nemesis in the past.
But, again the boys continued to play fast attacking futsal coming out on top 6-2.
On our last day our final game of the rounds was against Emmaus College from western
Sydney. This game was a great futsal spectacle and was also very physical. The boys
could not reach the heights of the previous day unfortunately losing by one goal.
The cumulative results (mainly the 7-7 draw with Camden Haven) meant we had to play
Sunshine Coast Grammar in our quarter final (last year’s finalists). This game proved
extremely tight with the teams being tied 7-7 at full time. The game proceeded into
10 minutes of extra time, with Bellingen conceding a goal in the final seconds to lose
8-7.

environment; midriff tops (see skin, not in) Slogans or pictures excepting brand names (as in small pocket sized logo) No underwear as outwear (e.g. petticoats). Hoodies Coloured ties Long coloured / striped socks Sandals, crocs, thongs, high heels, ugg boots or slippers
Students wearing unacceptable dress will be either asked to change into school clothing or sent home.
Safety: NO long hanging bracelets, necklaces or earrings, excessively loose garments in practical subjects and sports activities.
Establishing and maintaining safe working environments is fundamental to the work of teachers. Footwear is an important safety item. Good soles provide a sound grip on the floor preventing accidents from occurring. Footwear can also protect feet from mechanical or chemical damage. DEC policy clearly states that it is mandatory that students carrying out practical activities using chemicals or equipment in schools wear enclosed leather footwear. This includes all Science, Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes.
Leather shoes can now be purchased for as little as $20. Leather skate shoes and leather joggers are now readily available trendy options other than the traditional school shoe.
We urge parents to provide their children with leather upper shoes so that we can meet our OH&S obligations.
Remember that if students are out of uniform they are
required to bring a note from home AND/OR see
the Deputy Principal for a red uniform slip.
