Let Us Pray! O Lord, giver of life and source of freedom, I know that all I have received is from your hand. Gracious and loving God, You call us to be stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us to always use Your gifts wisely and teach us to share them gener-ously. Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing Your message to those we serve. May our faithful stewardship bear witness to the love of Je-sus Christ in our lives. We pray with grateful hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Grant to Them O’ Lord,

And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them.

Today is the final Sunday of the

liturgical year. Next Sunday we

will start a new year with the

First Sunday in Advent. On this,

the last Sunday of ordinary time,

we also celebrate the feast of

Jesus Christ the King. Today somehow sums up all of

the readings and Gospels we have been hearing through-

out the year. We have been hearing about traveling

around the towns and regions of Galilee, Samaria and

Judea. We have been hearing about Jesus teaching, heal-

ing, consoling, and challenging the religious leaders of

his Time. We have been hearing about Jesus the Christ

who is our Lord and King. He is the visible presence of

God in our midst. The readings for today’s Mass present

us with two very different images of Jesus. The first

reading and Psalm both point to Jesus as a shepherd who

will look after and tend his sheep as a shepherd tends his

flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep.

In the second reading however Paul presents us with a

powerful image of Christ as Lord and King. He reminds

us that just as all have died because of the fall of Adam,

so all will be made alive in Christ. Jesus Christ is pre-

sented as the all-powerful ruler to whom every other

power and authority must eventually give way. Paul tells

us, “He must reign until he has put all his enemies under

his feet.” Jesus represents life in all its fullness and one

that he wants to share with every single person. In the

Gospel, Jesus teaches what we must do in order to shat

the fullness of life he wants to share with us. Jesus

teaches that if we hope to be counted among his

sheep, then we must be loving people even if and

when we may not feel loved back. This is the way

God loves us. Fulfilling obligations or practices of

personal piety are not enough if they are not backed

with actions that benefit others. It is not enough to

say, “I am a good enough Catholic because I go to

Mass every Sunday” if we don’t put our faith into

action by caring for and loving others. As members of

His flock, we are expected to go out of out way and

reach out with love and compassion, especially to

those in need – the hungry, the

thirsty, the stranger, the poor and

naked, the sick and those in prison.

This is the King we are called to

honor and serve and the way we

can do it is to be filled with love,

care, and compassion for all of

God’s people, especially those

who find themselves furthest from him. The image of

Judgment presented in the Gospel presents us with a

challenge not about where we will be in the future but

about where we are today because where we find our

elves today, the king we find ourselves worshiping

today, will determine where will be in the end. The

best way to know that we will be numbered among

His sheep is for us to BE, NOW, in this time and

place, loving, caring, compassionate Catholics to

wards all of God’s people.

Good Advice The book Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff by Richard Carlson has a lot of good advice. One suggestion is to treat your family members as if it was the last time you were going to see them. We’ve all heard the advice for married cou-ples, “don’t go to bed mad.” Sometimes when we are an-gry, it’s difficult to reconcile with our spouse before we go to sleep. But, heaven forbid, what if they were to die during the night and we never had a chance to apologize? This can pertain to any close relationship. I once heard a story of a mother and daughter who were arguing first thing in the morning. The daughter angrily stormed out on her way to work. A few hours later, the mother was informed that her daughter had been killed in a car acci-dent. The mother lived in anguish for years because the last words she had said to her daughter were harsh. The two never had a chance to say good-bye or “I love you” one last time. Years ago, my husband and I were having a disagreement in the car on the way to work in downtown Pittsburgh. He would always drop me off near my building and drive across the river to park where they had cheaper rates. That day, I got out of the car and, with a harsh last word, slammed the door. As I headed to my building, the argu-ment was gnawing at me and I knew it would be a wasted day at work if I didn’t make it right. So I spent fifteen minutes or so walking around Pittsburgh and timed it so that I could intercept him on his way to his office and apologize. It is human nature to occasionally take our loved ones for granted. The song “You Always Hurt the One You Love” often rings true. We are pleasant with our co-workers, classmates, and sometimes even strangers, but we take out our stress and frustrations on family members – the ones who least deserve it. How is that fair? If you knew you would never see your loved one again, would you waste time with petty arguments or hold grudges? Try to appreciate every minute you have with your family members and friends – there might not be a tomorrow.

THE DEACON’S CORNER

Deacon’s Corner Today I woke up thinking everything is really

great! Then I realized I was actually late (or

close to the deadline) on several items including

my Deacon’s Corner. As I worked to get things

done and all caught up, I began to wonder if God

was ever late for anything. Now we all know God is not

“on the clock”. I know a lady who prayed for something

very dear to her for over 13 years. Of course God an-

swered. But as most humans she was looking for some-

thing just a little faster. But we quickly learn that humans

set deadlines, but God often ignores them. There are

many reasons why this is God’s way.

One big reason is that it builds faith. When the

disciples thought they were in danger of drowning, they

woke Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Oh you of little faith”.

They had just seen him heal leprosy, heal Peter’s mother-

in-law, cast out demons, and now he calmed the storm, but

they were afraid of drowning. When the Centurion came

to Jesus and said, my servant is paralyzed and very ill, Je-

sus said I will go and heal him. But the Centurion replied,

“Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my

roof”. Jesus said, “It will be done as you believed it

would,” and the servant was healed that very hour.

So we begin to see the active ingredient here is

FAITH. It is that time between our deadline for God and

God’s answer to our prayer that our faith has the chance to

grow. Keep on praying and have faith.

Deacon Mike

REMEMBERING OUR MILITARY

VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED.

If you have a soft spot for remembering the men and

women from our parish who are currently serving in the

armed forces overseas we are looking for your help. We

would like to form a committee who will gather the

names and address of those serving, so the parish can

send them cards and a Christmas package to remind them

they are in our hearts and prayers. We would also like to

have photo boards to display in our churches to remem-

ber them at Mass. If you think you can dedicate some

time to helping form the committee, please call the parish

office and leave your name and number so we can sched-

ule a meeting and open-house for others who may want

to help.

If you have a family member or friend who

is currently serving or will be serving over-

seas during Christmas, please notify the par-

ish office with their name and an address

where a small package can be sent to them

during the holidays. The deadline for receiv-

ing names will be the end of November. If you would like to help with this effort, please call

This is a personal and heartfelt invitation from

Cut out the invitation below

Christ, the Unconventional King

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our

Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

What a magnificent title for the God who

created us and loves us to the end. Of course, Christ is the

most unconventional king. Instead of being born in a pal-

ace, he was born among the animals in a manger. Instead

of the security of soldiers and guards, he was accompa-

nied by twelve simple men. Instead of being crowned

with gold and jewels, he was crowned with thorns. And,

as today’s Gospel reminds us, he did not want his face

etched on coins or framed on walls, but instead wanted to

be seen in the faces of those most in need. While Christ’s

kingship is unconventional, his reign over us is effective

as he lovingly shepherds us towards the kingdom, On

Mission for The Church Alive! invites us to seek new

and, at times, unconventional ways to reach out to our

sisters and brothers and strengthen our relationships with

each other and with our Lord and King. As Christ reigns

in our hearts and in the world, may he shepherd us as we

work to fulfill his mission of love.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Dear Parish Family,

Grace, love, and joy to you in Christ Jesus! Well, time is

flying by and for the first time in my life I am singing

Christmas Carols before Thanksgiving. I never liked it

when people sang Christmas Carols even before advent.

The fact of the matter is that when you are a church musi-

cian, you have to practice things months in advance, and

getting ready for the December Festival of Praise has got

me in the Christmas spirit already! I cannot wait for our

Lord to come!

When I was on my retreat a few weeks ago,

there was a moment in spiritual direction when the yearn-

ing for God grew so strong within me that I thought I

might explode! “I want to be with God now” I exclaimed!

My director assured me that this was a good desire and I

knew it was even though it meant that I am going to have

to be patient for a long time. As I expressed my frustra-

tion, he said, “you need to place all of your longing in the

Eucharist and you will find your desire for Jesus satisfied,

because Jesus is fully present in the Eucharist”. As he said

that, I knew he was right and I cannot tell you how beauti-

ful it was to receive the Lord at Mass later that day! Do

not be afraid to place all your longings on Jesus in the

Eucharist! If your heart is open, all your desires will be

fulfilled in Him. Be blessed!

In Christ,

Fr. Levi
