In 1844 a swimming competition was held in Lon-don with the participation of two Native Ameri-cans. The British competitor used the traditional breaststroke, while the Native Americans swam a variant of the front crawl, which had been used by people in the Americas for generations, but
was not known to the British. The winning medal went to 'Flying Gull' who swam the 130 foot
length in just 30 seconds - the Native American swimming method proved to be a much faster
style than the British breaststroke. The Times of London reported disapprovingly that the Native American stroke was an unrefined motion with the arms "like a windmill" and the chaotic and
unregulated kicking of the legs. The considerable splashing that the stroke caused was deemed to
be barbaric and "un-European" to the British gentlemen, who preferred to keep their heads
over the water. Subsequently, the British contin-ued to swim only breaststroke until 1873.

Bento— the word Bento originated in the South-ern Song Synaste and was a slang term for “convenient” or “convenience”. The origin of bento can be traced back to late Kamakura Peri-od (1185 to 1333). Since the 1880’s, students and teachers in Japan have taken their lunches in ben-tos when schools did not provide lunch.

Salsa
According to singer Celia Crus, salsa is just a different way of naming Cuban music. It is the mambo, the chachacha, the son… all Cu-ban rhythms combined under an only name. But salsa in itself was born in New York to-ward the end of the 60’s, created by musi-cians of the poor Latin neighborhoods. When it transcended Latin audiences, the word was imposed as a generic term to refer to the whole group of Latin music styles, from the boogaloo to the mambo, right through to the old son and including Latin house. Cubans rejected this term for a considerable period of time, but they did eventually accept it.
One thing that should not be forgotten is that when talking of Salsa or one of the many mu-sical styles of Afro-Caribbean origins one is talking of rhythms that were all made to dance to.
