LIFELONG FORMATION

RCIA Sessions: Are you or someone you know interested in learning about the Catholic Church? A new RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program will be beginning soon. Please call Carole Magee at 893-3982 or [email protected] with any questions. Are you interested in walking through the RCIA journey as a spon-sor? This is a wonderful way to refresh your faith and help a learner grow closer to Christ. Please contact Carole Magee with any questions about becoming a sponsor.

If you would like to have a Mass offered for a deceased loved one, or for other special intentions such as an anniversary or birth-day, contact the receptionist in the Ministry Center.

Outreach to Mother and Children: The cold weather is here and Golden Arrow is in need of coats in all sizes as well as mittens, gloves and hats. All items may be brought to the Ro-tunda where a box is marked “Golden Arrow.” Please place your donations in it. Thank you!

FOR THE FAMILY

Reflecting on the Word: The title “King of the Universe” goes so far beyond our small lives that we can barely grasp the immensity of it. Jesus came not just for the sins of humankind but to redeem all of creation and bring the entire cosmos back into God’s embrace. Biblical miracles are just the beginning of the awesomeness of a God who wants to be among us. This is a God who reigns over the moon and stars just as tenderly as the bees and flowers. Today’s solemnity can help us realize the im-portance of extending love beyond the immediacy of our short lives and care for creation as God desires. On the Way Home from Mass: What does a good king do, say, and look like?

IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD TIME TO JOIN OUR CHOIRS! With Christmas approaching faster than any of us want to imagine, this is an ex-cellent time to join our choirs. Both Spirit Singers and Spirit Ringers have immediate openings for interested persons. Try us out for the holiday sea-son – you may find it hard to leave – and we hope you’ll stay! For more information, contact David Minton, Choir Director. Ministry Center: 502-893-3982, (Wed. only); Cell: 502-439-3165 or email: [email protected]. JOIN WITH US IN SONG!

STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE “ …. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice" John 18:37 Stewardship is not an ideal but a lived faith. In order to carry out the Master's wishes (action), the good steward must first know the Master's mind (prayer) and listen to the Master's voice. Stewardship has often been defined as "prayer elevated to a lifestyle."

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENT

Thank you to Christine Shenk for stepping up to help with the ERE Potluck duties.

Consider naming Holy Spirit last in your Will. After all family and loved ones have been well taken care of, name the parish as recipient of the residuary estate (the amount that is left). To learn more, con-tact Deacon Michael Shumway in the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Mission Advancement at 502-585-3291 or by email [email protected].

with a gift to the 2018 Catholic Services Appeal. To date we have raised $92,774 toward our goal through the support of 227 households. There is still plenty of time to respond with a gift. Gifts can be made through the Holy Spirit Ministry Center or online at www.ArchLou.org/CSA. A contest in our school to encourage participation in the Catholic Services Appeal recently concluded, with Kim Crable's 4th grade class finishing 1st (ice cream party and a free dress day) and Julie Knoop's 1st grade class finishing 2nd (free dress day). Thanks to all who contributed!

MARRIAGE MOMENT

Marriage Moments: What does it mean to be a king, or queen, or president, or indeed anyone with power? Jesus reminds us, "My kingdom does not belong to this world." (John 18:36) Look at your spouse today and see beyond the power struggles of who is in charge or most right. Recommit to sacrificing your life for them.

Parenting Pointers: Thanksgiving dinner may be over but if you still have family gathered around you this weekend find ways to celebrate family. Play games, take walks, have long talks, tell jokes. If you must shop, ask your child to "adopt" a needy child and share a gift with them.

SENIORS

Our next Holy Spirit/Holy Trinity gathering will be Thursday, November 29th. Fr. Dal Cieslik will present The History of the Louisville Archdiocese. Start time is at 11:30am in the Multi-Purpose Building of Holy Trinity Parish. RSVP’s are kindly requested to BettyJean Cobb, 897-5207 or [email protected]

GOSPEL MEDITATION

If you brought your child to the restroom during the Liturgy of the Word, you might walk away with one of two interpretations of Jesus as King. The first and second readings are bold and victorious. We see Christ coming on the clouds for the final judg-ment of heaven and earth. The Gospel sets a very different tone. Jesus is under arrest and facing death before Pontius Pilate. We know how this story will end. So if Christ is King, what does it mean? Is he a glorious conqueror or a suffering servant? "My kingdom does not belong to this world." Here is the heart of Jesus' reign. He is a king -- and his "subjects" are alive and well on earth -- but, ultimately, Jesus' kingdom transcends our earthly concepts of power. Jesus faced down the temptation of a solely earthly kingship. At the close of his 40 days in the desert, the devil offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus only had to sacrifice his heavenly values and worship Satan. The same temptations to distort the kingship of Christ are present to us to-day. Jesus' invitation also endures. "Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." It is important for us to belong to the full truth of Christ's kingdom. First, our own hearts must be transformed. Our own rebellions in favor of selfishness and against holiness must be conquered by God's grace. Second, we must work to transform the world as best we can in our own corner of it. Like Jesus shows us by his life and death, this doesn't mean domination. It means service, sacrifice, respect, and love. Our lives must "testify to the truth" of Jesus Christ, who lays down his life for his people. That is the true beauty of Christ the King!

FEATURED ARTICLE BY PTO OFFICERS

The PTO at Holy Spirit School supports our students and teachers while building a strong school community. We sponsor many enjoyable, educational and fun PTO events throughout the year. This year, our team hit the ground running and we have not slowed down. It is hard to believe that the holiday season is right around the corner.

We kicked off the school year with our Fall Fundraiser. The students and families helped sell wrapping paper, magazines, cookie dough and other giftable items. The entire school participates in the fundraiser. The children earn fun prizes, dress-up days and parties when they participate. With enormous amounts of hard work, we raised over $23,000 for our school this fall.

Dining for Dollars is another fundraiser the PTO sponsors, that lasts the entire school year. Each month we work with a differ-ent restaurant to give back a certain percentage of sales to Holy Spirit School. When your family dines at that restaurant on the dedicated day, Holy Spirit raises money for our school. This school year we gave our Dining for Dollars Fundraiser a facelift and it has truly been successful. Last school year we raised a little over $500 the entire year. This year to date, we have already raised over $1000! Look for Dining for Dollar events in the upcoming months, so you too can dine out and support Holy Spirit School.

On Friday, February 1st, we will be hosting Spirit Night again. We are extremely excited to announce that the event will be held at The Pendennis Club. The evening is a fun filled night of amazing food, spirits and a silent auction. This year we will have a Full Contact Karaoke Band. For those of you who have not participated in this event before, you won’t want to miss out. Mark your calendar for February 1st.

Our Kroger Rewards Program is still going strong. We bring in about $1500 per quarter. That is with only 163 of our families enrolled in the program. Imagine the success we could have for our school, if all school families as well as parishioners joined together for this great program. Joining Kroger Rewards is no expense to you. All we need to do is shop at Kroger with a Kroger Rewards Card and our school earns money. If you are interested, you can sign up for this program with your Kroger Plus Card by logging in to your kroger.com account. (If you do not have an account, you can sign up for one here.) There you can select Holy Spirit School PTO as the local organization you wish to support. Then enter the code AL226. For Holy Spirit School to earn rewards you simply shop at Kroger. The school receives a monetary reward for every dollar spent. Joining the Community Rewards Program is FREE and does NOT affect FUEL POINTS or other discounts earned.

The PTO works hard to make sure the students at Holy Spirit School become the best and brightest. We believe the students should be given opportunities and experiences that support classroom instruction and curriculum. We know that as a commu-nity, you share these same goals and values. With these events combined, the money raised goes to support the school in this way. The funds make a difference in enhancing the education of our children. This year to date we have purchased many items that will continue to enrich our student’s school experience. Some of the items are: Standing Desks and Stools, Bouncy Bands, Document Cameras, Robotics Equipment.

Our team is honored to be a part of the Holy Spirit PTO. We are proud of all our Falcons, their families, teachers and staff who have supported us this year. We have accomplished so much already. It is a pleasure for our team to lead our PTO this year and we look forward to the rest of the school year. Remember, each family has something to contribute to the school to make it be the best school it can be.

The PTO Officers are: Jennifer Eickler and Kermit Highfield, Co-Presidents; Jenni Garner, Vice-President; Kristin Taylor and Dawn Baucco, Co-Treasurers
