Feeling at Home for ChristmasWhen we can’t be at home

for the holidays, we can at least feel like we are.

That’s why this Christmas, one of the areas St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation is focusing on is the comfort, well-being and spirit of our elderly residents and their families.

The Views at St. Joseph’s Gen-eral Hospital is a residential care facility that is home to 117 res-idents who can no longer live alone independently. Each resi-dent varies in ability and back-ground, and adds richness to the tapestry that is St. Joseph’s.

While the team at the Views works hard every day to make sure their residents feel at home, the task is getting more dif cult as the buildings at St. Joseph’s get older. “Homey” upgrades to furniture, lighting, curtains, dé-cor and paint are greatly needed to increase residents’ comfort and quality of life.

The rooms needing physical space upgrades are: the respite room, two palliative rooms and the family room.

“The furniture is getting worn and outdated, and the rooms need a fresh look and feel,” says Amanda Levicek the Clinical Coor-dinator for Oceanview at the Views. “In a warm, comforting environ-ment, a resident will relax when he or she sees an inviting space and the family will feel at ease leaving their loved one in our care.”

“Having a brighter space and ar-eas where residents and families can relax will lead to a spontaneous, happier and calm environment.”

These improvements matter, because everyone deserves to feel like they’re home, at Christ-mas and always.

After the new Comox Valley Hospital opens in 2017, these upgrades will live on, as St. Jo-seph’s will continue to provide excellence in seniors’ health, which includes residential and hospice care.

Hospital Right HereFor those of us fortunate enough to live here,

it comes as no surprise that the Comox Valley is ranked as one of the top-10 places to retire in Canada (Business Advice Source, Cottage Life). Here we have it all – ocean, mountains, fresh water fun, golf courses and unlimited outdoor activities year round, not to mention all of the amenities we need right in our own backyard, including a new state-of-the-art hospital opening in 2017.

Really, it’s no wonder why so many retirees are relocating to the Valley.

While many newcomer retirees will forever be linked to their former hometowns, it’s important to make them feel welcome, as they are invaluable

members of our community and will play an integral role in the future of the Comox Valley.

In the fall of 2017, the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital will open and St. Joseph’s in Comox will continue to operate providing excellence in residential care, hospice care and seniors’ health. With this crucial expansion of health care services in our community, donations from all members of the Valley will play an even bigger role in improving the level of health and care we receive.

We encourage all residents of the Comox Valley, from newcomers to long-time residents, to consider St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation when making their charitable donations. Every dollar goes back into our

health care system in the form of medical equipment, new technology, renovation projects, patient comfort and staff education, items and information that will impact everyone in our community.

No matter where we are from, how long we’ve lived here or how old we are, the quality of health care in our community affects all of us. Please help our Foundation as we strive to achieve the absolute best health care for you and your family.

President’s MessageST. JOSEPH’S GENERAL HOSPITAL FOUNDATION TODAY AND TOMORROW

Caring for our community has always been at the core of St. Joseph’s General Hospital, its staff, and our Hospital Foundation, and although the landscape of health care in the Comox Valley will be changing with the opening of the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital in 2017, the heart of our history will remain the same – to Care with Compassion.

As health care grows in the Comox Valley, so will St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. The Foundation will expand to support the new Comox Valley Hospital, in addition to St. Joseph’s. For many years, the Foundation has received generous donations for acute care services such as cancer care, cardiac care, and others critical to our health care. Those funds have been set aside for those purposes and will continue to be held and spent as needed for those purposes to ensure that those donations are spent as intended by the donor.

The Foundation’s name will also change in the next year to encompass the expanding health care

system. While the Foundation will change its name and experience its own growth, it will not change its commitment or dedication to provide the community with top-of-the-line health care, whether that’s through raising funds for new equipment and technology, building upgrades, patient comfort or staff education.

The generous donations and support we receive from individuals, service groups and businesses are invaluable to us and to the thousands of people who access health care each year. Every dollar donated to our health care system improves a life in some way, and when one life is enhanced, so is the community.

Thank you for your continuing support during our exciting transition.Brenda Kelm, President, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation BoardPhoto: St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board and staff: Back row, left to right: Amy Dugas, Katie Maximick, Lynn Dashkewytch, Henning Larsen. St. Joseph’s Hospital:Here, Now and Beyond the Changing Role

With the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital projected to open in October 2017, there are many questions regarding the future role of St. Joseph’s General Hospital, its staff and its services.

Here are some facts on Comox Valley’s new hospital and the continuance of care at St. Joseph’s:

• The focus of Island Health and St. Joseph’s Hospital is to maintain the quality of care and delivery of services now and through the transition, after which acute care services will move to the Comox Valley Hospital (owned and operated by Island Health). St. Joseph’s Hospital will continue to provide excellence is residential care, hospice care and seniors’ health.

• St. Joseph’s Hospital is in the process of upgrading its residential care facilities and exploring other seniors’ programs and services. By enhancing care for the frail and elderly, this will decrease pressure on acute care services and, in turn, improve our health care system.

• Many St. Joseph’s employees, physicians and volunteers will form the foundation for patient care at the new Comox Valley Hospital.

• Any new acute care equipment St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation purchased now will transfer to the new hospital.

St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation: Expanding its Role to Support Health and Care

Through this transition, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation has expanded its mandate to support both the new hospital, as well as St. Joseph’s Hospital. This means adding to its team and adopting a name that will embody the local healthcare system

beyond St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The Foundation will change its name in the next year and continue to grow with the expanding health care in the Comox Valley. What it will not change is its dedication to provide top-of-the-line health care through

fundraising for new technology, patient comfort items, and staff education.

Donations from the community are essential to sustaining an excellent level of healthcare and quality of life in the Comox Valley, now and through the transition with the

Comox Valley Hospital. With the public’s support, the Foundation can obtain much-needed equipment and technology that can change or improve hundreds of lives in the community, now and in the future.
