Lava Beds National Monument Hey Crystal Ice Cave fans! You might be curious to know when this winter season's ranger-led tours will begin. Well, we still haven't had the freezing temperatures that we need for the ice formations to freeze. At this time, we hope to begin tours by January 7, but stay tuned on our facebook page or website for updates: www.nps.gov/labe. Remember, tours must be booked through recreation.gov, and you may begin booking up to three weeks before the tour date. NPS photo by Nico Ramirez

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife: Recreational crabbing closed from Tillamook Head to California border November 18, 2016 Newport, Ore.-- The Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the immediate closure of recreational and commercial bay crabbing from Tillamook Head to the California border due to elevated levels of domoic acid. This includes Dungeness and red rock crab harvested in bays and estuaries, off docks, piers, jetties, and the ocean. Elevated domoic acid levels were found in the viscera of Dungeness crab collected between Cascade Head and Cape Falcon, triggering a biotoxin closure. The remaining areas of the coastline are being closed out of precaution while more samples are being processed. Additional sample results will be used to inform the reopening areas and the opening of the ocean crab fisheries, which are scheduled to open December 1. Crab harvesting from Tillamook Head north to the Columbia River remains open, although it is recommended that crab always be eviscerated prior to cooking. Evisceration includes removing and discarding the internal organs and gills. Despite the closure, crab and shellfish products sold in retail markets and restaurants remain safe for consumers. Domoic acid or amnesic shellfish toxin can cause minor to severe illness and even death. Severe poisoning can result in dizziness, headaches, vomiting and diarrhea. More severe cases can result in memory loss and death. Shellfish toxins are produced by algae and originate in the ocean. Toxins cannot be removed by cooking, freezing or any other treatment. ODA will continue to test for toxins in the coming weeks. Removal of the advisory requires two consecutive tests in the safe range. For more information, call ODA’s shellfish safety information hotline at (800) 448-2474 or visit the ODA shellfish closures web page - https://www.oregon.gov/…/Shell…/Pages/ShellfishClosures.aspx

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. The average number of home fires on Thanksgiving Day

is normally double the average number of fires in homes all other days. Here are some ways everyone can have a happy and safe Thanksgiving: • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking - frying, broiling or boiling • Make your cooking area safe. Move things that can burn away from the stove. Turn pot handles toward the back so they can’t be bumped. • Watch what you’re cooking. Use a timer when roasting a turkey or baking. • Be prepared. Keep a large pan lid or baking sheet handy in case you need to smother a pan fire. • Stay awake and alert while you’re cooking. If you see smoke or the grease starts to boil in your pan, turn the burner off. • Prevent burns. Wear short sleeves when you cook, or roll them up. Don’t lean over the burner. Use potholders and oven mitts to handle hot cookware. Safety tips if you are frying a turkey this Thanksgiving: • Turkey fryers can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area. • An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in, and a partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter when put in the pot. • Even a small amount of cooking oil spilling on a hot burner can cause a large fire. • Without thermostat controls, deep fryers can overheat oil to the point of starting a fire. • The sides of the cooking pot, lid and pot handles can get dangerously hot. Visit the USFA website for more information on cooking and turkey fryer safety. Have a fire safe Thanksgiving! Chiloquin Fire & Rescue

2017 ARTISTS

CALL FOR ENTRIES

For the 39th Annual Sagebrush Rendezvous

Charitable Art Exhibit and Sale

January 28-29, 2017 at the Running Y Ranch and Resort

Hosted by

The Exchange Club of Klamath Falls, Oregon

Entry DEADLINE: November, 28 2016 PURPOSE

The Exchange Club of Klamath Falls is a non-profit community service organization continuing the tradition of the Sagebrush Rendezvous. The Sagebrush Rendezvous is an annual fine art show with a 39 year history in the Southern Oregon area. The purpose of the show has always been to exhibit and sell art, to showcase regional artists, and to raise funds for regional charities.

This two day show has featured the work of artists from the local area, the Northwest and that of many nationally known artists. The show initially featured work collected or sent to the show for exhibition and sale from artists and art publishers. Over the years, local artists, writers and artisans have added to the offerings to the public, along with a beer and wine tasting. Expanding this year, the show will include a broader spectrum of juried artists…illustrators, painters, and sculptors in all genres who will exhibit and sell their work to the art patrons and collectors of Southern Oregon and Northern California.

Funds from the proceeds of art sales have been distributed to local and regional charities, including Klamath Hospice, the Relay for Life group through the American Cancer Society of Southern Oregon, Special Olympics, Junior Achievement, Friends of the Children, H.E.A.R.T., and to the Exchange Club service projects. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit New Zealand’s South Island lifted up the seabed by two metres, pushing it above the ocean’s surface. Aerial photos taken by environmental engineers show large purple patches of uplifted earth on the coastline north of Kaikoura. Side-by-side shots, taken before Sunday’s devastating earthquake which killed two people and caused extensive destruction in Christchurch, show an alarming contrast. Deadly Smog Shrouds Tehran http://go.nasa.gov/2g3PEz7 Heavy smog in Tehran broke records this week, reportedly causing hundreds of deaths, and prompting school closings in the region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured a natural-color image of the smog on November 9, 2016. The pale gray smog shrouds the city of Tehran, just south of the Alborz mountain range. Fine airborne particles (PM2.5) climbed to concentrations of more than 150 micrograms per cubic meter this week; concentrations between 101 and 150 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including the elderly and children. More than 400 people have died due to air pollution in the city over the past month, according to news reports. The city closed schools on November 17.“In the past several days or so [it has] been really bad,” said NASA atmospheric scientist, Amin Dezfuli, who lived in the city between 2001 and 2006. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to leave Tehran.” When Dezfuli lived in the city, air-pollution-related school closings were not so common, he said. Since then, air quality has further declined, with significantly fewer days with good or average air quality, studies show. Emissions standards for cars are weak, he noted. In addition, public transportation, though increasing, is still having trouble keeping up with a growing population. Leading sources of air pollution in the city include fumes produced by cars, trucks, and motorcycles. In the winter, temperature inversions can exacerbate Tehran’s smog. A layer of warmer air traps the colder, denser, smog-laden air beneath it. Meanwhile, mountains around the city prevent smog from leaving the valley.

http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20151111-the-worlds-last-truly-wild-horse-is-making-a-comeback?ocid=fbert Most of the horses we think of as "wild" are just domestic horses gone feral. There is only one type of horse that remains utterly wild. In the majestic Mongolian landscape, where the vast grasslands meet the endless dunes, herds of horses rove. Neither tethered nor constrained by fencing, they run and graze on the arid, windswept steppes. The very sight of wild horses symbolises freedom, but these Mongol horses are not truly wild. They are descended from domesticated horses, possibly from the same ones tamed by the armies of Genghis Khan in the 13th century. But for all the skills and passion of these "Hell's Horsemen," there remained one horse they never tamed: Przewalski's horse. These horses are now the only truly wild horses anywhere in the world. After being driven to the brink of extinction, they are now making a slow recovery – but their future is far from guaranteed.

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/seriouslyscience/2016/11/16/5891/#.WCyZ5PkrJPZ When it comes to fast flying animals, our minds naturally turn to the birds. But it turns out that, just like birds, some bats fly quickly while others mosey about. Here, scientists employed planes to track the flights of 7 T. brasiliensis bats and came away with a new flight record for speed: Although certain species of birds are very fast (the previous record was 69 miles per hour), these Brazilian bats are faster… a LOT faster. The scientists were able to track individual bats flying at 100 miles an hour (44.5 m/s). Hey, it may not be as fast as Superman, but it’s certainly faster than Batman!

FCE (Family and Community Education)

Meetings are the 2nd Wed of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.
