Our 2019-20 Ministry Year Theme is “Everyday Blessings.” This year, we hope to take inspiration from the

example of the early followers of Jesus, following the helpful acronym, BLESS, as we seek to be a

blessing to others, especially to those who aren’t currently enjoying a relationship with Jesus.

This month’s focus: L - Listen.

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship

On the drive home after church, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, “Mom, I've decided

to become a pastor when I grow up." Curious of the sudden decision, she asked, “Oh, really, why is

that?” “Well,” the little boy said, “I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more

fun to stand up and yell, than to sit down and listen.” This little boy’s observation, while it might bring a

smile to our faces, it also brings home a truth to our lives: listening is hard! For something that we often

consider a passive activity, listening takes an awful lot of attention, focus, and effort—and not just for

sermons.

Reflect with me of the importance of listening, even on the most basic level. How many relationships

could be improved or even saved, if one or both parties listened just a little better? How many millions

of dollars would businesses across our country save, if employees listened better to one another? How

many accidents could be prevented with the “simple” task of listening? Sometimes it is not just

physically hearing others that is the problem. Listening is also about making an appropriate response to

what we have heard.

Pastor Pete Scazzero points out our problem of “listening” within the life of Peter on the mountain of

Christ’s transfiguration. “In Matthew 17, we observe Peter in a hurry to advise Jesus. He attempts to do

the right thing for Jesus, instead of waiting and listening to Jesus. . . Following Jesus is not first doing

things for Jesus; it is first listening to him speak and then doing what he says.” Peter is so busy pursuing his

plans that it takes an all-encompassing fog and the very voice of the Father to call Peter back from

doing to listening. And what does that voice of God say to Peter? “This is my beloved son. Listen to him!”

As Christians, we are invited to two very distinct types of listening. We are first and foremost called to

listen to the voice of Jesus, as we hear it in His Word. Before we “go and do,” we must first learn to “sit

and listen” through prayer, reading, and reflection. We are also called to a second kind of listening—a

prayerful listening to the joys and sorrows, fears and worries, needs and wants of others. Someone once

quipped, "The world is divided into two types of people: those who love to talk, and those who hate to

listen." God’s Word invites us to change that. It invites us to see the importance of loving others by

listening to others. We sometimes get so worried about “telling” others about Jesus that we forget that

the first step is “listening” to others on behalf of Jesus. Do most people need more people to tell them

things for their lives or do most people need more people who will slow down long enough to listen

about things in their lives? Listening is the doorway to a relationship. It is the window into their lives as

they are experiencing it. Listening is the chance for us to hear a little bit of their story, which is often

reciprocated with a little sharing of our story, and as relationships grow and as conversations deepen it

leads to opportunities to share a little bit of Jesus’ story. The early disciples devoted themselves both to

hearing the apostles’ teaching (“listening to the voice of Jesus”) and to the fellowship (“listening to others

who one by one were becoming Jesus followers”).

Preschool through 8th grade, and now my

children attend Calvary. I have also been a

teacher for the last 16 years.

helping grow the students in our congregation

as well as in our community.

Calvary Connect Contemporary Worship

This month’s Calvary Connect worship service will take place Sunday, November 10 at

Join our Praising Hands Puppet Ministry for a morning of food, puppets, and crafts to

celebrate the birth of our Savior. Mark your calendar now for this fun family event meant for

all ages (Sat., Dec. 7 from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.). If you have questions or are interested in

Time to Build—Habitat for Humanity

2019 Interfaith Build has begun. October saw the start of building a home for the Sargent

family here In Indianapolis.

Calvary assists with the Interfaith Build by both giving our financial support through Habitat

For Humanity that goes directly toward the Interfaith Build. Calvary also volunteers to work a

day on site in building alongside this family and neighbors of all faith traditions.

CALVARY BUILD DAY is Saturday, November 16 from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Calvary needs 6

volunteers to commit to helping on this day. Everyone can use a hammer or wield a

paintbrush to manifest God’s love.

The scheduled work for Saturday, November 16 is Interior Painting. Sign-ups begin the

weekend of October 26/27 OR email Pastor Art at wehrmeister49@yahoo.com.

Training, materials, and safety equipment are all provided. Water, snacks, and pizza lunch

will be available for all volunteers. Calvary usually also provides coffee, juice and donuts for

the morning. Thank you for your service.

Compassion Ministry

Thanksgiving Food Collection and Christmas

We are filling Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. Please bring

canned and packaged food contributions by Sunday,

November 17. If you are willing to help sort and pack boxes,

volunteer help would be appreciated. Meet in Room 125 on

November 17 at 10:30 a.m.

Want to help but don’t like to shop? We also help families at

Christmastime with gift cards. Monetary donations to Calvary’s Good

Samaritan fund help finance gift cards. These are easy opportunities

to share and show compassion and love for our Savior by helping others.

FLIGHT—High School Youth Group

FLIGHT meets Sunday evenings from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the youth room.

Events typically include food, Bible study, and an activity. This group is

open to all students currently in grades 9-12.

Some special events this month include our grow groups night on

November 3 and leaf raking on November 10. Those interested in serving our community

via leaf raking should meet at Calvary at 3:45 p.m. with a rake. We will head

back to church at 5:30 p.m. for chili, Bible study, and games.

LAUNCH (5th & 6th)

LAUNCH will meet this month on Wednesday, November 15 from

5:30-7:00 p.m. This event will include a Bible study, snack, and an activity.

SAIL (7th & 8th)

SAIL will meet this month on Wednesday, November 20 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

This event will include a Bible study, snack, and an a service project.

All 5-8 grade youth are invited to the Camp-In on Friday, November 22. This

is an overnight event where youth can bring tents or supplies to build a fort and sleep in.

Organized activities will run late into the evening until lights out. This event costs $20 per per-

son and includes dinner Friday night and breakfast Saturday morning. Drop off is Friday at

7:00 p.m. and pick-up is Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.

Youth Ministry

Chili Cook-Off

The chili cook-off is back! This event will take place on

Sunday, January 26 following the late service

(approximately 12:00-1:30 p.m.) In addition to the cook-off,

we will also be adding a desert auction.

Opening Doors

God has blessed families of Indiana with the choice of sending their children to the school that they

feel best meets their needs. The LUTHERAN SGO of Indiana has changed the boundaries of the local

school and greatly broadened them. You have the opportunity to open even more doors allowing

students to enter the hallways of Calvary Lutheran Church and School. This opportunity will provide

scholarship grants to students and their families. Contributions made by you for this purpose will be

used to offer a Christian education so that children may not only receive a quality education, but to

hear God’s Word.

How do I help open these doors? Contribution forms for Lutheran SGO are available in the church

and school offices or online at www.LutheranSGO.org. The state of Indiana will give to you a tax

credit of 50% of your donation. Example: If you give a gift of $1000.00 you will receive an Indiana

state tax credit of $500.00 and 100% of your donation will be received back to Calvary. This is a

unique opportunity. Funding for all of these scholarship grants for current students enrolled at

Calvary is $65,500.00 Currently we have gathered approximately $18,000.00. Those desiring to

contribute to this fund may do so through December 31 to receive the tax credit for this 2019

calendar year. Even better still, students under a Scholarship Granting Organization are eligible for a

CHOICE Indiana state voucher the following school year. Any additional funds gathered will remain

in our account with the Lutheran SGO of Indiana to be used during the 2020-21 school year. We ask

the Lord to provide for the needs of others through the gifts of our hands.

Identification

What comes to mind when you think of November? Does a giant turkey flapping its wings as it

cruises to your Thanksgiving table instantly come to mind? Could it be piles of leaves in a variety of

colors? Is it a clock with its hands traveling back one hour as daylight saving time comes to an end?

How about an early morning on a Friday standing in long lines searching for that fabulous deal? No

matter what comes to your mind instantly, November is a wonderful time of the year.

We could find ourselves experiencing a variety of 3 seasons of weather in November. Baseball’s

World Series may still be playing (the Cubs won game 7 in 2016 on November 2). NBA basketball has

begun. NFL football is well under way and NHL hockey has a few weeks in already. November’s

middle name could be variety.

Life provides great variety for us. Each day we are greeted with new opportunities and challenges

to experience no matter the month, day, or year. November 2019 will soon pass. Yet throughout all

of the change this life may bring, God is changeless. He is our ever present help. Our identity is

secure in the blood of the Lamb. Through the waters of Holy Baptism we are washed free from the

stain of our sins. We are made anew as the children of God. Christ has Called us to Himself as He

extended His arms on the cross to suffer and die. The empty tomb marks the fulfillment of God’s

redemption. Through faith we clearly see our salvation and identity as children of God. This is ours to

share each day through the ministry of our Day School. Through the past 70 years God has richly

blessed the students, teachers, and staff through the Good News of salvation.

Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball

We invite you to attend the Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball tournaments which will be held at the

Lutheran High School of Indianapolis this month. The Varsity girls tournament is on Friday-Sunday,

November 1-3. Exact times of our games will be determined later. The Varsity

boys basketball team will participate the following weekend, November 8-10.

These events tip off the season of basketball. We ask the Lord to bless all our

winter sport teams and participants with His love and grace.

School Closing for Thanksgiving

School will be closed on Wednesday through Friday, November 27-29 in observation of the

Thanksgiving Holiday. Calvary School will be closed on Wednesday as families prepare for

Thanksgiving. We ask the Lord to be with all those traveling. We rejoice in the opportunity to share

this time with family and friends. School will resume on Monday, December 2. We give thanks to our

God with a grateful heart.

Operation Christmas Child

The students of Calvary will be joining the older adults on Thursday, November 21. We look forward

to sharing this time together with our Kindergarten through 4th graders. Operation Christmas Child is

the sponsored event being held. Operation Christmas Child provides a wrapped shoebox filled with

special items. Included are a photograph and letter of greeting from the packers. These boxes are

sent to underprivileged children around the globe. We thank God for this opportunity to span the

generations through this service project.

Fall Back

We set our clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 a.m. Fall back for an extra hour of

sleep. The mornings will be lighter with the early afternoons darker.

Saints 4 a Day

Students in our 7th and 8th grade will spend part of a day at the Lutheran High School of Indianapolis.

This is a recruiting trip. The date for this trip is November 14. We thank and praise God that our

students are extended the invitation to further their Christian Education at our Lutheran High School.

Blankets for Babies Our November dates are Thursday, November 7 & 21 from

6:00-8:00 p.m. in the cafe area. Our mission is to share God's love and

care by knitting/crocheting blankets for newborn babies whose

parents are in need of emotional, spiritual and financial support. Our

blankets are donated to the Life Center on Hanna Ave. Fall is a

terrific time to start a project or learn a new skill. We have teachers

and free yarn to get you started. All ages and skill levels

Calvary supports Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build

Churches, mosques, and synagogues, together with Greater Indy Habitat for

Humanity is building a home for the Sargent family on the southeast side near

Raymond Street. Chaniea is mother to Cassidy (1) and works at Community

Health Network. She attends Living Water Fellowship Church. She writes, “I grew

up in IHA low income complex, so buying a house wasn’t on my radar. I would

look at houses for sale over the years but knew financially I would not be able to

afford one. When I found out I was pregnant with my first child my mind would go to owning a

home more, but if I couldn’t afford to buy a house before a child I knew I wouldn’t be able to

afford it once she got here. I then spoke with a prior habitat participant and although a little

skeptical decided I would try. Becoming a mom is the best thing that ever happened to me. I look

at my daughter and just want to give her the best. I have been living in apartments my entire life,

but I want a home for her.” Calvary is supporting Habitat’s Interfaith Build with a financial

contribution from the Stewardship budget as well as by volunteering to work on the home on

Saturday, November 16 from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Work this day will be inside focused on interior

Advent Envelopes will support Calvary scholars

Calvary has a long-standing history of assisting members who are studying full-time ministry in the

Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The funds to make these scholarship awards come from donation

envelopes especially designated for Wednesday Advent services. Calvary supports Sam Troemel

who is enrolled in the Specific Ministry Pastor Program. Our goal is to raise $4,000 during Advent to

meet our commitment to Sam. The Stewardship Ministry Team’s scholarship fund will continue to

support students until such time as the Wessler Scholarship Endowment Fund for Education of LCMS

Church Workers has an interest balance sufficient to fully support Calvary scholars.

The Holiday Bazaar needs a lot of volunteers. Helpers needed before, during and after

November 9. Time commitments vary and some tasks can be as simple as making phone

calls. You can find sign up sheets on the Women in Missions table in the south narthex. You

can also email Jan Main (jmain1948@gmail.com).

Save (& Share) Your Treasures

Do you have an auction item? Are you willing to donate a service? Can you ask the

company you work for to donate items and/or services? You can help make this year’s

SILENT AUCTION a great success! Pick up a donation form at the Women in Missions table in

the south narthex and return to the church office. We must have the items by Oct 20.

Save things to be sold in The Attic. Since space to store attic items is limited at Calvary,

PLEASE bring your PRICED donations Friday, Nov. 8 from 3:30-7:00 p.m. or Saturday, Nov. 9

from 7:30-9:00 a.m. If that is not convenient for you, please ask someone to bring them to

Calvary at that time. (Please no clothing, large appliances or building materials.)

Support These Worthy Causes

Proceeds from this year’s bazaar will benefit Mike Rowe Foundation (Provides Work Ethic

Scholarships to help people get trained for skilled jobs that are in demand.), Second

Helpings (Rescues unused food from restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers and delivers

nutritious meals to social service agencies. The Culinary Job Training program trains

disadvantaged adults for careers in the food service industry), and Calvary Lutheran

Church and School (New folding chairs/racks and speakers for the gym to enhance

worship, fellowship, and school activities).

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child from Samaritan's Purse is a project that brings the Good

News of Jesus Christ to impoverished children in more than 100 countries through

gift-filled, shoe-box-sized Christmas boxes. Calvary's Older Adult Ministry is pleased to

be teaming up with CLS students again this year to support this worthwhile ministry.

Donations of small gifts to go inside these boxes are needed. Suggestions for gift

donations can be found below. The boxes are now furnished by Samaritan's Purse,

so shoe boxes are not needed. Please help us reach our goal of 185 boxes.

The boxes will be packed Thursday morning, November 21. Each student in Grades

K-4 will fill a box with gifts and an “All About Me” page with the assistance of an

older adult. Samaritan's Purse will add Christian materials to each box. Please bring your donations to the church by Sunday, November 17 and leave them in the bin in

the Narthex. More information about Operation Christmas Child can be found at

TOYS – small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump

ropes, small Etch A Sketch®, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries),

Slinky®, etc.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES – pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, writing pads or

paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.

NON – LIQUID HYGIENE ITEMS – toothbrush, comb, washcloth, and bar soap.

OTHER –T-shirts, socks, ball caps; sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, and

flashlights (with extra batteries)

Remember: Items must fit in a shoebox. Do NOT include

candy, toothpaste, gum, used or damaged items,

war-related items, seeds, food, liquids or lotions,

medications or vitamins, breakable items, glass

containers or aerosol cans.

blood of Jesus will do. Your blood cannot cleanse sin. Nor can the sweat of your labors or

the tears of your contrition. There is no such thing as sinless saints, only forgiven ones. If you

say you have no sin, you're fooling yourself. Temptations abound, and sin comes all too

naturally to the natural born sinner. But the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses us

from all sin.
