So that they would take what he said to heart. And, he told them that the hearts of some people are hardened “they look, but don’t really see, they hear but they don’t really listen.” And doesn’t that seem to describe much of our society today? People are always busy, and seem to just go through the motions, trying to meet the expectations of the culture, and not really seeing, hearing or enjoying the people or world around them. And consequently, there's no sense of community. Instead there are divisions, anger, frustration, broken relationships and more. People are searching for meaning, for direction, for understanding, for answers, for relationships, but not finding any. Why is this? Well, priest and author Anthony DeMello shares a conversation which may help us understand: Where should I look for enlightenment? Here. When will it happen? It is happening right now. Then why don’t I experience it? Because you do not look, At what? Anything your eyes light upon. Must I look in a special kind of way? No. The ordinary way will do. But don’t I always look the ordinary way? No. Why not? Because to look you must be here. You’re mostly somewhere else! And aren’t we often guilty of being “mostly somewhere else”? We look at our computer while we’re talking to someone, not giving them our full attention. In conversation we think of how we’re going to respond, rather than really listening to t he other person. We have open eyes, but fail to notice the person we just passed who could use a smile. We’re sitting next to a family member, but our focus is on the TV or our phone. We’re not present in the moment or present with the person near us. And most likely, if that's what's occurring with the people around us, it probably means we’re not present with God. So we don’t’ find that enlightenment we’re looking for – meaning, direction, purpose, understanding. And yet, there is Jesus, present for us, saying, “To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge.” Yes, Jesus is the answer to our deepest needs. We just need to be present, to be aware to have “eyes that see and ears that hear.” And so, this season, especially when we are encouraged to be thankful for all that we have been given, let us slow down and be present. Let us truly “see and hear” the people, the sights, the blessings all around us. And let us “see and hear” Christ at work in our lives. Peace be with you, Pastor Rebecca November 2019

“The Wesleyan”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

“Blessed are your eyes because they see and your ears because they hear.” Matthew 13:16

Jesus said these words to his disciples when he explained why he spoke in parables – to make them think carefully

about what Jesus was saying. So that they would take what he said to heart. And, he told them that the hearts of

some people are hardened – “they look, but don’t really see, they hear but they don’t really listen.” And doesn’t

that seem to describe much of our society today? People are always busy, and seem to just go through the

motions, trying to meet the expectations of the culture, and not really seeing, hearing or enjoying the people or

world around them. And consequently, there's no sense of community. Instead there are divisions, anger,

frustration, broken relationships and more. People are searching for meaning, for direction, for understanding, for

answers, for relationships, but not finding any. Why is this?

Well, priest and author Anthony DeMello shares a conversation which may help us understand:

Where should I look for enlightenment?

Here.

When will it happen?

It is happening right now.

Then why don’t I experience it?

Because you do not look,

At what?

Anything your eyes light upon.

Must I look in a special kind of way?

No. The ordinary way will do.

But don’t I always look the ordinary way?

No.

Why not?

Because to look you must be here. You’re mostly somewhere else!

And aren’t we often guilty of being “mostly somewhere else”? We look at our computer while we’re talking to someone,

not giving them our full attention. In conversation we think of how we’re going to respond, rather than really listening to the

other person. We have open eyes, but fail to notice the person we just passed who could use a smile. We’re sitting next

to a family member, but our focus is on the TV or our phone. We’re not present in the moment or present with the person

near us. And most likely, if that's what's occurring with the people around us, it probably means we’re not present with

God. So we don’t’ find that enlightenment we’re looking for – meaning, direction, purpose, understanding.

And yet, there is Jesus, present for us, saying, “To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given,

and they will have an abundance of knowledge.” Yes, Jesus is the answer to our deepest needs. We just need to

be present, to be aware – to have “eyes that see and ears that hear.”

And so, this season, especially when we are encouraged to be thankful for all that we have been given, let us slow down

and be present. Let us truly “see and hear” the people, the sights, the blessings all around us. And let us “see and hear”

Christ at work in our lives.

Peace be with you, Pastor Rebecca

And of course, a delicious lunch will follow. Come enjoy this “time away” to be with God and each other. Prayer for the Soul Our weekly times of prayer will continue on Wednesdays at noon in the chapel except for the first Wednesday of the month which is “Food for the Soul”. Prayers for our church and one another are extremely important. Please join us. You do not have to pray aloud, just come and be in the presence of God and one another as we share in this important ministry. Hanging of the Greens – Saturday November 30th, 4-7pm. Come begin the Advent season as we decorate the church, share in worship and have a meal together.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Men’s Breakfast for November, will meet on Tuesday, November 19th at 7:30am. All men are welcome to meet in the Fitzgerald room for breakfast and discussion on a relevant topic. Spiritual Growth Advent Bible Study begins a 4-week study:

In ALMOST CHRISTMAS: A WESLEYAN ADVENT EXPERIENCE, author and

pastor Magrey deVega leads a group of authors in exploring how we can make

the commitment to Christ during Advent, and connect our heritage with the

traditional Advent themes of Love, Hope, Joy, and Peace. The study includes

Nativity hymns by Charles Wesley, litanies for lighting the Advent wreath, and

prayers that can be incorporated into preparation for Christmas.

Because Thanksgiving is late this year (Nov.28) and we want to complete the

study before Christmas, the sessions will begin Thursday 11/21.This is a 4-week

study and will be held on the following days:

Thursdays 11/21, 12/5, 12/12, 12/19 at 11:00 a.m. led by Pastor Rebecca

Sundays 11/24, 12/1, 12/8, 12/15 at 9:30 a.m. led by Jenn and Brian Linton

Tuesdays 11/26, 12/3, 12/10, 12/17 at 10:30 a.m. and at 6:30 p.m. led by Betty Smith

You are welcome to join us for all of the studies during the week or whatever suits your schedule.

Some folks like to attend all weekly sessions and some prefer one per week. We encourage whatever

attendance works for you to listen and learn from each study leader, meet new friends and continue

your own spiritual growth. Each leader has unique spiritual insight into Scripture, our traditions, and

following Jesus Christ.

NEW NURSERY ATTENDANT:

We're excited to welcome Amanda Barabe as our Nursery Attendant! Amanda recently returned to Falmouth after living in California and Montana. She has extensive experience in taking care of children in various capacities, including church settings. Please stop by the Nursery to say hello and welcome her to John Wesley!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SERIES:

Middle School November Series: “Hall of Fame: Everyone’s a VIP” All people have value because they were created in God’s image. God values each of us so much that He sent Jesus, to make it possible for us to have forever relationships with Him. We follow God’s example when we show others that they have value, too. Join us Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 pm as we explore what it looks like to honor and make promises to others and God.

High School November Series: “Free People” It’s easy to see faith as just a list of dos and don’ts we have to keep in order to make God happy. But what if this view of faith is missing the mark? In this series, we take a look at the book of Galatians, we’ll discover that Jesus didn’t come to keep us captive to a list of rules. In fact, just the opposite is true! Because of Jesus, we get to live as free people! Join us from 4:00-5:00 pm on Sunday evenings.

“WoW” Sunday School Series: Old Testament, “God’s grace for all nations” The study of Jonah is much more than a fish tale. The book of Jonah is a demonstration of God’s relentless pursuit to save people. Students will discern the effort God makes to show His grace to those who are disobedient and His eagerness to forgive those who repent. Students can also examine how God desires to bring people of all nations to Himself and as a result take an active role in world evangelism. Join us Sunday mornings during the 10:30 am service.

UPCOMING EVENTS: Sticker Shock Service Project (Saturday, November 16th, 8:30 am to 12:00 pm) All 5th grade and above students are invited to join us as we partner with Gosnold for their “Sticker Shock” campaign. Our group will go to different liquor stores placing “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” stickers on paper bags. It might seem like a minimal task but it is a huge awareness campaign that our students enjoy participating in. Please sign up your student(s) today and let Allison know if you’d like to chaperone this service project.

Page 4: November 2019 John Wesley United Methodist Churchjohnwesleyumc.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/... · we were let out to pick pumpkins of our choice. After the ride the group walked

Hanging of the Greens (Saturday, November 30th, 4:00-7:00 pm) Join us as we dress and decorate the church for Advent and Christmas! Adults will put up trees, hang garland, and arrange nativity scenes and more! Children and youth will participate in games and crafts. We’ll then come together for a brief worship service and a potluck dinner. Please sign up on the Children & Youth Bulletin Board and identify what kind of food you’ll be bringing.

Advent Bible Study (Tuesday, December 3rd, 10th, 17th, 3:15 - 4:15 pm) All 5th grade and above students are invited to join us for a three-week Bible Study after school where we’ll read full chapters of the Bible, have meaningful discussion and answer questions. All are welcome!

PAST EVENTS:

RECAP: Apple & Pumpkin Picking Our families had a spectacular time picking apples and pumpkins at Keith’s Farm Saturday, October 12th. When everyone arrived we loaded up in the hay ride which drove us around the whole farm. Half way through we were let out to pick pumpkins of our choice. After the ride the group walked over to the apple orchards to pick all the apples they could want. It was a chilly fall day but a great time nonetheless!

RECAP: Youth Group Haunted House Outing On Saturday, October 19th, 12 students and 3 adults ventured up to Fall River, MA to muscle through one of New England’s spookiest Haunted Houses, “Factory of Terror!” Although our students were a little scared they conquered their fears and made it! The group then had dinner at Wendy’s and shared when they were scared the most. Thank you to Riann and Tim Meissner for chaperoning and having a blast with us!

COLIN STERLING We are so excited to announce that our November 2019 Children & Youth Spotlight honoree is Kindergartener, Colin Sterling! Colin and his mom and two brothers have been attending John Wesley for over 2 years now and we couldn’t be happier! Colin recently graduated from the Nursery and is now attending our K-2 WoW Sunday School class during our 10:30 am service. Colin is a very bubbly and loving boy. He always has a smile on his face, gives the best high-fives and can outrun anyone! He participates in discussion, always offering great stories and heartfelt comments. You’ll also see Colin at most of our family

events, including most recently, our Family Apple Picking Outing. We’re so happy that Colin is a part of our church and we cannot wait to see him grow as a beloved child of God. Congratulations Colin!

OUTREACH/MISSIONS MINISTRY TEAM

Change the World Change the World for November will go to support the Venezuela Project. We have been

able to raise enough in the past to make three shipments of baby formula. They

continue to be in desperate need of baby formula, and we hope to keep supporting

them as much as we can. An infant’s brain develops the most in the first 3 years and

having the proper nutrients is vital to that growth! They are very appreciative of our help,

as they are many in their country who are suffering.

In October collection of $204.23 went to UMCOR for relief supplies. Did you know that since the beginning of this year we have collected $2,149.14 in loose change to support 10 different non-profits? Since the collection of loose change began in April 2015, John Wesleyans have donated $11,605. “That’s not pocket change”, as they say, and yet it was to each of us. Combined, our loose change has made a change for the organizations selected by our outreach/missions ministry team.

UMCOR Relief Kits: a list can be found in the fellowship hall on the Mission/Outreach bulletin. An example of

each kit can also be found next to the collection bin!

Coffee Hour this month is being hosted by the Missions & Outreach Committee. Let us know if you would like

to sign up and help November 17th & the 24th. Please look at the sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall to sign up!

Monthly Mother's Support Group Friday, November 29th from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Parent Room. We hope this will be a time for mothers to relax, breathe, and learn how to be a loving mother through creative activities, faith-based discussions, guest speakers, etc. Child Care will be available across the hall in the Nursery. Moms of all ages and stages are welcome. Please contact Julie Immelt Whelden at [email protected] for questions or to sign up. This group meets the last Friday of every month.

The Alternative Gift Market planning is going great. Folks from many different faith communities come together to plan and support this event. The market is Sat Nov 9 and Sun Nov 10 from 11 to 3 at St Barnabas Church. JWUMC once again is representing World Shoe/Samaritans Feet global charity. We are really excited about this opportunity to raise some money for this worthwhile charity. Bobye Anderson and Kate Finemore will be at the market, and will be looking for some volunteers to work 1 or 2 hour shifts. It is a lot of fun to participate and everyone that comes to the gift market will leave with a new perspective of our local and global needs. We will recruit volunteers in the coming weeks.

Dress a Live Doll It is that time of year again to help support children in need over the holidays. The Salvation

Army “Dress A Live Doll” & Teen Angel program provides many children on Cape Cod with much-needed new

clothing from “top to bottom….inside and out”. This is a special way to provide for those a little less fortunate. If

you are interested in touching the life of a child this Christmas, please see Julie Immelt Whelden in the narthex.

Take a tag from the tree and return wrapped gifts with the tag by November 24th to the decorated box in the

Fellowship Hall.

OUTREACH/MISSIONS MINISTRY TEAM AT WORK!

Serenity Farm was a lot of fun! Thank you to all who came and helped in cleaning horse stalls, bunny houses

and feeding the animals. We learned how the animals ended up at Serenity Farm and learned about some of

them being adopted soon. This organization runs off of donations and is always need of help with costs of hay,

feed and many other items to help keep up with the animals. http://www.serenityfarmcapecod.org/

BIG FIX This was an amazing event that had over 340 volunteers to help 16 homeowners who are seniors,

veterans or disabled. Thank you to all who took time out of their lives to help someone in need for the Big Fix.

Our group transformed someone’s house into a beautiful space. Cutting and removing overgrown bamboo,

removing a large bush and other plants, replacing the roof on a shed, washing and cleaning the outside of the

house along with cleaning the fence and painting the shed. It was a very small portion of the day but with the

number of volunteers we did a couple weeks’ worth of work in 2 hours. Save the date for next year usually the

first weekend in October they will be going to Orleans. Let’s try to get enough people to do a one house!

History of the John Wesley mortgages

By now readers of this column will know that before there was John Wesley Church there was the Main Street Church. In 1955 a bold decision was made to move from Main Street and build a new church on a piece of property on Gifford Street. But finances were so tight that we couldn’t raise enough money to even put a hold on the land. So our initial debt was to local contractor, Sandy Green, who loaned the church the money to hold the land. After more planning and investigation we got an actual mortgage for “over $100,000” with approval and help from the National Boards of the Methodist Church to begin construction in 1956. Details of the construction and some of the financial struggles in the early years have been described before. In those years we had infusions of cash from various sources to help with general finances which in turn helped to meet the mortgage payments. Basil Brewer, local business man made a cash donation in 1957 and a stranger, Carlton B Lyman, willed a piece of land in Falmouth Heights to the church in 1967. This was sold for $30,000. Even so it was necessary to remortgage in 1968 for additional funds of about $30,000. By 1970 the Woods Hole Church was losing attendance and the decision was made to close it. Fortunately the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was interested in buying it for $25,000. By 1977 remortgaging was undertaken again that yielded $60,000. Another source of help was our New England Conference which provides financial help for churches when needed. This is supported by the apportionments that all churches pay. For many years in the 1980s we were allowed not to pay our apportionments which helped our budget. In 1985 a new pastor, Jeanette Burton, came along bringing new enthusiasm which caught on. In the 1985 annual report we read that a “task force to organize a short fund drive to retire the church mortgage” was in full swing, aiming to complete the task by Easter 1986. Although no single person should receive credit, many who remember the time mention Bob Clemence. A school teacher with unbridled energy who retired from New Jersey to Falmouth, he served on many of our church boards, lead the choir for a while and started the drive to retire the mortgage in the form of a 6 month challenge. He talked to Ad Board meetings, Charge Conferences and even Friendship Club. Finally one Sunday he made an urgent appeal at the worship service for the final $673. Many of us remember the moment when Emerson Tifft stood up from his usual pew and said “You’ve got the money”. The dramatic end to years of mortgage debt!

In the 1986 trustees’ treasurer’s report a final mortgage payment of $48,979.13 is recorded. A special service of celebration was planned for April 27. Dignitaries and the press were invited and a dinner was planned for everyone. Scrap books were updated, special music was performed (well, Bob Clemence was choir director) and there were speeches. You can see from the picture that they really did burn the mortgage. From the left in the picture are District Superintendent Bob Sweet, Pastor Jeanette Burton, Ellen Call, Bob Clemence, Tom Manchester, Dorm Schwartz, Lenny Call (hidden) and Kay Reynolds.

And all these years later thanks to Bob Dinsmore we still have the ashes from the fire. Question – what should we do with them?

God’s blessings to our family members celebrating birthdays this month:

2-Nancy Leger, 3-Sharon Mulcahy, 5-Barbara Colturi, 8-Milton King, 15-George McFarland, 17-Ted Burt

Please give your birthday information to the Fellowship Ministry by recording it on the calendar on the Fellowship bulletin board. Birthdays can be lifted up in prayer for all of God's blessings in the year ahead. Let us celebrate life among our church family. It's a great thing to have a birthday, a gift from God.

November 2019

November Events

A little squirrel bustles around Gathering acorns from the ground,

The birds fly south when cold winds blow To be in a warm land and out of the snow.

The trees shed their coats of brown, yellow and red,

The bears hibernate, a cave for their bed, A feeling of fall creeps into the air

And a clamor of people is heard at the fair.

But the best of it all in the month of November Is a Thanksgiving feast set in all of its splendor,

And poor Tom, the turkey, who gradually grew fatter Now lays on a slab which we call a platter.

Thus you have heard some events of November,

There are many more I know you’ll remember, But my time and space is limited here

So a Happy Thanksgiving until next year!

Let us thank the Lord God for everything and for every blessing that He does bring.
