SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3
Three concurrent services will be happening.• Traditional Service in Goldsmith Hall at 9:30 am
• Library Minyan in rooms 108 & 109 at 9:30 am
• Instrumental Service in Library Reading Area at 10:00 am
Come to the service of your choice. Then we will all come together for a beautiful kiddush
sponsored by Kurt and Stephanie Kavanaugh.
On November 2, Jill Goldstein will begin a new phase of her life. After 32 years serving in a variety of roles, including teaching in the Polsky Religious School and serving in multiple administrative roles for our clergy and staff, Jill Goldstein has decided to move on to her new career… RETIREMENT.
But, calm down people. While Trinity Lawson and Becca Levine will pick up a majority of her work, she will continue to work with our B’nai Mitzvah families on a part-time basis to ensure they have a smooth journey from the time their child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah date is chosen through the day they become a valued member of our minyanim.Jill, thank you for all you have done for this Congregation; thank you for all you will continue to do for us. We have been blessed with the opportunity to have known you and have you as such an important part of our lives. You will always be part of our Beth Shalom family.
While a date has not been selected, we are planning a special Shabbat in Jill’ s honor. Until then, Jill is not running away; she is only taking the time to slow down a bit. God knows she deserves it.
Already! It’s Only Been 32 Years. THANK YOU, JILL GOLDSTEIN
Retirement? Really? We can’t believe it. Not Jill. Yes, Jill. She has earned it.
A SPECIAL SHABBAT Join us for an instrumental Shabbat experience!

FROM THE Rabbi’s Study
It all Starts with GratitudeHow we start our day is often indicative of how the rest of our day will go. The
first instruction in the Code of Jewish Law, the Shulhan Aruch, teaches us that we should strengthen ourselves like a lion does in order to arise and serve our Creator.
The first blessing in the prayer book – even before the prayers that we say in synagogue – is “Modeh Ani Lifanecha,” “I am grateful before You.”
In the Twelve Step world of recovery from addiction, this is often called an “attitude of gratitude.” Being able to have gratitude for what we have in life is the absolute cornerstone of a spiritual life. This “attitude of gratitude” is not unique to Judaism but is found within most major spiritual traditions.
In the book, The Spirituality of Imperfection, we see, “Those who lack gratitude’s vision do not possess things; things possess them.” Gratitude is not about seeing ourselves as undeserving, but it is about changing our paradigm to have no assumption of being deserving.
The psalmist writes: The earth is God’s and all that it contains. This “attitude of gratitude” connects the feeling of gratitude toward a world-view of stewardship. It teaches us that we are merely stewards of whatever material gifts we have we are merely stewards of. This is foundational toward learning the value of tzedakah. Gratitude can drive generosity.
But what if we didn’t use this world view only toward material possessions. What if we used it toward health, love, relationships and time?
• If we have gratitude for our health, how mightthis impact our view in helping others find healthin their lives?
• If we receive love from others in our life evenwhen we don’t ask for the love - how might wegive love to others?
• If others are generous toward us with ourrelationships or the time we spend with them -how might we give time and connection to others?
Thanksgiving, though rooted in the Puritans and having a questionable story about Native Americans, is fundamentally Jewish in its outlook. I often think that it is the MOST Jewish holiday because it is solely about being able to give thanks. When you sit at the table this November, it is easy to think about the “Thanks” part of “Thanksgiving.” The harder challenge is asking ourselves: what generosity does our gratitude demand of us?
RABBI DAVID M. GLICKMAN [email protected]
Polsky Religious SchoolInstrumental Services Returnby HAZZAN TAHL BEN-YEHUDA [email protected]
Instrumental services on Shabbat mornings return to Beth Shalom! Four times this year, November 3, January 12, March 9 and May 11, our community will offer a traditional Shabbat morning service in Goldsmith Hall. A lay-led traditional Library Minyan in rooms 108 and 109, and a highly participatory and somewhat abbreviated service, featuring drum and guitar and contemporary melodies as well as traditional tunes we know and love.
This new service will be called Tefillateinu, which means Our Prayer. The word tefillah has been used to mean several things - originally, it simply meant the standing silent prayer, the amidah. However, we think of tefillah either as a prayer from the siddur with clear parameters or as a prayer of the heart. Tefillateinu is what we make of it!
What that means for us is that Tefillateinu is incomplete without your voice and your input! Adirah Liebschutz, Alan Edelman and Hazzan Ben-Yehuda will lead the first Tefillateinu service, and we hope you will not only plan to be there, but also will invite your family and some friends to join you.
Because here is the thing - the secret to an amazing service is not the guitar or the drum. It isn’t even the beautiful voices of the service leaders. The secret to an amazing service is YOU; It’s your presence. When you come to shul to be part of your community, when you sit among your family and friends, then you create the ruach, the spirit where the instrumental and vocal music can transport and transform you. I can’t wait to see you on November 3!

Rose Family Early Childhood Education Center
Teaching Gratitude to Preschoolersby JUDY JACKS BERMAN | DIRECTOR [email protected] | 913-647-7287
• Model thankfulness by using words such as “thank you,” “please” and “you’re welcome.” “Thanks for that hug, it made me feel great.”
• Work gratitude into daily conversations. “I’m so happy when you listen.” “We’re so lucky to have a good dog like Buster.”
• Have kids help. By participating in simple household chores, kids realize that all these things take effort.
• Participate in acts of kindness together. Make soup for a sick neighbor, take your child with you to donate clothes or visit an assisted living place.
• Insist on thank you notes.• Say “no” sometimes. Teach children they do not always get what they asks for.• Make pictures/cards, cookies, etc. for people who help our community such as
firefighters and police officers. Take your child to deliver these thoughtful gifts.• Create daily or weekly routines. For example, before bedtime ask your child,
“What are you most thankful for today?” Share what you are thankful for as well.
FROM THE DESK OF Bernie Fried
Life Lesson 14: Yesterday, Today, and TomorrowAmerican inventor Charles Kettering wrote, “You can’t have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time.” Yesterday is over; no one knows what tomorrow will bring if anything at all. We only have today; the only way to prepare for a better tomorrow is to make the best use of today.
We are always hoping for a beautiful tomorrow, a tomorrow that will bring joy, promise, fulfillment, and success. But none of that can happen unless we make the best use of today. We spend so much time thinking about what we did or didn’t do yesterday and worrying about what we will do tomorrow, we forget we always have today.
Yesterday came and went, and tomorrow never comes. Nobody ever woke up and said today is tomorrow. Tomorrow exists somewhere in time, be it the next day, next month, next year, or many years in the future. Tomorrow is the place our dreams and goals reside. It is the place we strive to get to.
We have seen the lives of too many young people cut short by tragedy or illness. We have seen too many tomorrows left unfulfilled. We have seen too many todays not used to the fullest. Let’s not let that happen to us.
Today is the most important day of your life; take full advantage of it. We have no idea if tomorrow will ever come. We have no idea when God will call us home. But if we take care of today, we will be taking care of many tomorrows for our children, our grandchildren, and all of God’s children.
American icon Warren Buffett said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Let’s all plant that shade tree. Let’s all work as hard as we are able, play as hard as we can, do as much as time allows, and enjoy the best today has to offer. If we are blessed with only one more day here on earth, we will know we are one step closer to that beautiful tomorrow for us and everyone we love.
BERNIE FRIED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR [email protected]
We all know November is the month of Thanksgiving, the month to really take notice of what we are grateful for. Children as young as 15-18 months can begin to grasp concepts that lead to gratitude. They begin to realize they are dependent; that Mom and Dad do things for them. By ages 2-3, children can talk about being thankful for certain things; a pet, toys, people in their lives. By age 4, they can understand the concept of being thankful for more abstract things such as acts of kindness, love and caring.
Here are ways you can instill gratitude in your children, not just in November but every day:

Sisterhood
Sisterhood Book Club will meet on Wednesday, December 12 at 1:30 pm at the JCC in the large boardroom on the first floor. The club will discuss We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter.
“This novel is based on the true story of a family of Polish Jews who scatter at the start of the Second World War, determined to survive, and to reunite. It is the spring of 1939, and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows ever closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships facing Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. Driven by an extraordinary will to survive and by the fear that they may never see each other again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.”

Community Programs
Dear Beth Shalom,Thank you for supporting the High Holiday Food Drive. We collected close to 6,000 pounds of food, which will help stock the shelves in the coming months. We welcome donations any time of year. You can find donation barrels at the JCC, JFS Brookside and many synagogues.
The High Holidays finished just a few weeks ago, and we are on to preparing for Hanukkah! The annual Hanukkah Project is ready to match "adoptors" with families in need. We expect to assist 300 families and older adults this season with gifts and gift cards. New this year is a collection for winter hats, scarves, gloves and socks. The winter items will reside in both pantries for all families to shop throughout the winter. More details can be found below or on our website, www.jfskc.org.Don Goldman | JFS Executive Director
Volunteers are invited to this year’s Hanukkah Gift Wrapping Party that will take place on Tuesday, November 27, 5:30-7:30 pm in the Campus Social Hall. Drivers are also needed to make gift deliveries on Friday, November 30 and Sunday, December 2. If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please e-mail [email protected].
Hanukkah Holiday Project needs Volunteers, Shoppers
Learn, Laugh & Love ProgramsOn Thursday, November 29 from 1:00-2:00 pm, in conference room A at the Jewish Community Campus, CPA Peter Newman will discuss IRAs and the new tax bill at our program “The Biggest Tax Bill in History.”
For more than 34 years, Newman has been the host of Kansas City Moneyline, an interactive radio talk program that covers every aspect of financial subjects. Newman has conducted financial seminars for cruise lines all over the world. He frequently appears on local TV news and reporters continually seek his expertise concerning financial topics or tax changes and deadlines. While this program is free, reservations are requested by calling The Heritage Center reception desk at 913-327-8044.
Pre-Hanukkah Gathering for Spiritual Peace and Wholeness
With the days getting shorter and nights cooler, our outdoor world continues to change with the oncoming winter season. Yet Hanukkah and the Jewish calendar propel us to prepare ourselves internally, moving towards wholeness with courage and understanding.
On Thursday, November 15, join this expressive and supportive gathering as we share traditional and contemporary prayers, songs, and readings, which include personal reflections from individuals looking for warmth and light. The Jewish Gathering for Spiritual Peace and Wholeness will focus on the miraculous power of hope and the need for all of us to feel some light in times of darkness.
The evening gathering will be co-facilitated by Jewish Community Chaplain Rabbi Jonathan Rudnick and song leader Emily Tummons with guest facilitator Rabbi Sarah Smiley of Congregation B’nai Jehudah as well as Rachel Black, cantorial soloist. Sponsored by the Chaplaincy Program of Jewish Family Services, this sacred time and space will offer support and connection to those seeking comfort.
This service will take place at the Heritage Center at the Jewish Community Campus beginning at 6:30 pm. It is open to the entire community regardless of one’s level of observance.
A light nosh will be served starting at 6:00 pm. Please make reservations by calling the JFS office at 913-327-8250 or sending an email to [email protected]. www.jfskc.org

Parashat HaShavua is an ongoing, monthly program taking place every third Shabbat of the month at 9:00 am in the conference room. The goal of this program is to engage its participants in a stimulating discussion of the weekly torah portion in a friendly atmosphere, where the difference of opinions is respected and questions are encouraged.
The next session will take place on November 17, when PARASHAT VAYETZEI will be discussed. An informal atmosphere and deep level of discussion are the trademarks of this gathering. No prior experience is required, and everybody is welcome to join.
