I ran across this quote during one of my late night wanderings around the internet. Falling asleep early and waking at odd hours of the morning is apparently a byproduct of aging. I do find that some of my clearest thoughts and ideas come in those early morning hours; less distractions and absence of noise from my daily life.

As I read those words, I thought about the people that spend their time giving back to the community. Volunteers are the lifeblood of organizations such as the Chamber and countless other civic and nonprofit groups. We are blessed to have a strong group of volunteers in our community. Many of them have long since retired from their careers, others find time from their daily lives to pitch in and help. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience. Volunteers keep the Chamber running, from the monthly task of sorting and delivering this newsletter, to serving on the Board of Directors. Our Ambassadors help set up our luncheons, stage activities, and work with our membership. Without them there would not be enough hours in the day to accomplish the work necessary to provide our membership with business services.

Every November we take a few moments to say thank you. Our luncheon this month is a very small way to show our appreciation for the hours they spend giving back to the community. This year I want to make November Volunteer Appreciation Month, not only for our volunteers at the Chamber, but for all community volunteers. I hope you will join me in saying thank you to these dedicated individuals.

I also want you to considering joining one of our community groups; we can all use your helping hand. Our schools, the Scouts, the Boys and Girls Club, the Arts Council, and many more depend on your involvement. Find something that interests you and consider becoming a community volunteer; even if it is for just a few hours a month. It might help you sleep better and it really makes a difference in the lives of others.

November 21, 1938 – Boy Scout Cabin – The necessary papers etc., have actually been signed and sealed for the Scout cabin. A group of our boys started clearing the ground off Saturday. The lot is 150 x 150 feet located at the Big Spring. We do not know as yet, when actual construction of the cabin will begin. The Boy Scouts are going to furnish most of the labor. (The building was located approximately where the gazebo stands today in Orr Park)

November 20, 1945 – Montevallo Our Community – As we said last week we can be proud of Montevallo, of its history, and of its natural beauty. We can also be proud of its steady growth. Did you know that in 1920, Columbiana, Calera, and Vincent were all larger than Montevallo, but by 1940 Montevallo was larger than any of these? Montevallo, with a population of only 850 in 1920, increased its population by 640 in 1940, a greater gain than any other Shelby County town. (Montevallo’s current population is 6,723 based on 2016 data.)

Our Season of Gratitude

As we enter this holiday season of thanksgiving, it is a pleasure for me to provide an overview of one of the city’s most spirited events of the year. On October 13th, I had the distinct privilege of honoring some of Montevallo’s finest citizens at our annual Hometown Heroes Breakfast on the campus of the lovely American Village. It was incredibly gratifying for me and for those honored to see so many supportive individuals in the room. For those of you who were not able to make it, I am happy to present to you our list of honorees and highlight one special honoree with the introduction I provided when I presented his award.

And now for our very special honoree, Mr. Darryll Harris, the recipient of the Elizabeth A. Mahler, Spirit of Montevallo Award

The Elizabeth A Mahler, Spirit of Montevallo award was created in honor of Ms. Elizabeth Mahler who is credited with the largest single land donation to the City of Montevallo. Sadly, Ms. Mahler passed away in 2015 but she left behind quite a legacy. In November of 2013, Ms. Mahler donated her family’s entire estate, 167 acres of land with an antebellum home and multiple outbuildings, to the City of Montevallo. This gift is unprecedented in the history of Montevallo. It is this spirit that is embodied by the recipient of this very significant award.

This year’s Elizabeth A. Mahler Spirit of Montevallo Award is being presented to a gentleman in our community who should not be with us at all. For one thing, I had to plead to convince him to accept this award. Additionally, in 2016 he was taken off life support and never expected to live. At one point he was pronounced dead. After you hear his story, you will agree that Mr. Darryll Harris fully embodies the Spirit of Montevallo. So, here it is.

years ago, Mr. Harris was working in a tree holding a polesaw and went into a diabetic coma, falling 40 feet to the ground. He was put on life-support and rushed to UAB withtwo brain bleeds, a broken neck, a broken collarbone, a broken back, 8 broken ribs, a broken pelvis bone, one brokenarm, and had to have two titanium rods put into his legs. Eight days after the accident the doctors unplugged his life-support, expecting him to pass away. But as Mr. Harris indicated “Jesus plugged it back in.” The doctors were flabbergasted and had no explanation as to how Mr. Harris’ body suddenly began working again on its own. They told his family he would never walk or talk in this life again. But, those doctors missed the mark. Mr. Harris not only walks and talks today but he extends this city a great deal of service as a way of treating his own neuropathy and giving back.

After determining that he absolutely could not sit still or his muscles would atrophy, Mr. Harris slowly started spending his time walking around Montevallo. As he did so, he was a bit disheartened when he would run into trash or limbs along the vast miles of his footpath. Rather than complaining to the city about the issue, he has made it his mission to dedicate much of his waking hours serving and beautifying our city. Each and every day that he is able, Mr. Harris picks up any limbs and debris that dare to cross his path. He literally brightens nearly every corner of our world-Spring Creek Road, Orr Park, downtown, even Highway 10. Prior to Mr. Harris’ service, city hall regularly received complaints of trash

throughout town. The more Mr. Harris has committed to our town, the fewer the phone calls have become. He traverses and cleans our town with a smile on his face and a giving, and loving spirit ,crediting his miraculous recovery to God.

Mr. Harris is a testament to the type of community we have and is a source of inspiration to us all! I thank you for being such a nurturing community who embraces Mr. Harris and others who have faced adversity and shine their own lights in our corner of the world. It is an honor to serve as your mayor.

BICYCLE LIGHTING GUIDE

November 5th at 2am marks the end of daylight savings time for 2017. As our clocks fall back, we will see the sun rise and set earlier, meaning that bicycle lighting will become all the more important on our evening glow rides. Bicycle lighting can be broken down into two basic categories: lights that help others see you, and lights that help you see others.

Alabama Code 32-5A-265 requires that when biking at nighttime you have a white light mounted on the front that can be seen at least 500 feet away. This same code requires a red reflector in the rear that can be seen from 500 feet away when low beams from a motor vehicle are being used. This can be established by clipping on an inexpensive LED bike light. However, these codes only establish the bare minimum of visibility – we recommend the following lights:

• Rechargeable lights - encourage use through sustainability and reduce battery waste.

• LED lights - put out more light for less energy use and tend to last longer per charge.

o Rear RED flashing light – will stand out from other solid lights.

o Front WHITE flashing light – will catch the attention of oncoming motorists.o Front WHITE solid light – in addition to your front flasher this will allow you to see where you are going. We recommend at least 200 lumens for city riding (research your own light needs before purchasing).

• Flair lights – there are a tremendous number of other lighting systems that can be used to give your bike its own distinct personality. In addition to the above recommendations, please consider these fun options:

o Patterned spoke lights that show a multitude shapes and colors - think LED billboard.o Colorful bar lights that cast light on the ground or bike frame - they also make interesting shadows.o LEDs that wrap your bike frame with color and light.o Hub lights that clamp around the center of your wheel.o Spoke rope lights that spin with your wheels and snake between your spokes.o Valve cap lights that quickly screw on our tire valves and streak when you ride.

The band, under the direction of Mrs. Lindsey Underwood, was awarded Best in Class at the Mid-South Marching Festival in Gadsden.

At the Trussville Marching Invitational, the drum major, dance line, and majorettes received superior ratings. The band, percussion section, and color guard received excellent ratings.

BOYS AND GIRLSCLUB NEWSWe’ve had a busy month and are looking ahead to another as always! Members of the Triple Play Leadership Club enjoyed attending the Hometown Heroes breakfast. Thanks to Mayor Cost for including us in this great event. The entire Club enjoyed a pizza celebration in recognition of having raised the most money to help the Houston area clubs affected by hurricane Harvey. Thank you BGCCA President/CEO, Leisa Smith for the pizza!

We have also joined with other afterschool and youth development programs around the country by participating in a “Lights on After School” bring-a-friend day. We also participated in “Say Something Week” which encourages members to speak up when they hear things that concern them about safety at school.

Several Club traditions are continuing including our annual Trick-or-Treating outing to the UM campus. Our Flag Team serves MHS by raising and lowering the flag at home football games. This year’s team includes Natalie Adams, Triniti Agee, Nakiyah Bell, Gracie Edwards, Meagan Gentry, Elijiah Kirkwood, Danielle Tyus, and London Weeks, led by Team Captain Trey Adams.

We also continue to recognize Youth of the Month for their outstanding participation, and for providing a strong, positive example for their peers. This month we were happy to recognize Devonte Herron, Olivia Patterson, Kennedy Reaser, and Coco Williams.

As we look ahead to November we are excited about the grand opening of our monthly Be Great Mall. Members earn Be Great bucks all month long by attending, demonstrating good character, and setting a good example for their peers. Each day members can buy school supplies and small treats. Once a month the BG Mall opens with a wide variety of items such as stuffed animals, room decorations, toys, and other kid-friendly things! Donations of items for the mall are greatly appreciated. November also brings our annual Iron Bowl Week of activities including athletic, intellectual, and artistic competitions. The losing side serves cupcakes to the winners!

We will be open for members and non-members, age 6 to 18, all day on Veteran’s Day. The Club will be open on Nov. 20 and 21, before closing for Thanksgiving. The fee is $5 per day. This popular Christmas event is the perfect outing for your family, church group, office or club. Two tours are offered each day, Tuesday through Friday. One begins at 10:30 a.m. and concludes with a luncheon at noon. The second begins with the noon luncheon and is followed by a tour, ending at 2:30.
