Songs of Praise and Thanksgiving. I have been a member of praise bands that accompanied worshippers at synodical and churchwide gatherings, yet it has been over fifteen years since I have presided at contem-porary worship. Serving at Our Saviour’s has been a soul-stirring blessing for me. In addition to singing the familiar and more recent hymns in Evangelical Lutheran Worship

(ELW), I get to learn news songs practicing with the band, but one song in particular seems to have penetrated my being, Ten Thousand Reasons, by Matt Redman. I say “seems to” because several times a day without even meaning to, I find myself singing it out loud – in the supermarket, waiting in line at the Walgreens, scrambling eggs in the kitchen. Especially this verse:

You’re rich in love and you’re slow to anger. Your name is great and your heart is kind. For all your goodness I will keep on singing. 10,000 Reasons for my heart to find. Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, oh my soul. Worship God’s holy name Sing like never before. Oh, my soul, I’ll worship your holy name.

Ten THOUSAND reasons to be thankful to the sovereign God for all God’s blessings, even those that may not seem like blessings at the time. How often have you been surprised at how what you initially thought was a “bad” thing was actually a vehicle of blessing in the end? Then count the obvious, in-your-face blessings that for whatever reason at the time, were not so ob-vious to you? The Gospel hymn, “How I Got Over” written by the late Clara Ward is a testimony of awe and holy flabbergastedness at the miraculous blessings and salvation for those who follow Jesus. Only one day has been set aside as a national holiday for Thanksgiving, and there are only 365 days a year. How long would it take us to lift up 10,000 thanksgivings to God for the grace, the unconditional love that is ours in Christ Jesus? Start now and like the OLD secular song declares: When you’re worried and you can’t sleep, just count your blessings instead of sheep. And you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings. 2017 Grace in Action Sunday is the Sunday before the Thanksgiving holiday. It is the annual day of covenanting to give thanks by committing time, treasure and talent to God through this community of faith. A suggested giving amount of a-dollar-per-reason may raise a chuckle or two, (or the ire of some!) but in all sincerity, I appeal to you to consider all your reasons to say, “Thank You, Lord,” and make a commitment. Bible Study Classes

WOMEN’S MONDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY: This is for the busy woman who wants to meet in fellowship with her sisters in Christ to study God’s Word without the stress of “homework”. We meet on Mondays, 7:00pm Sept. through May,

beginning September 18, location to be announced. For more information, call Sue Hagen.

WOMEN’S TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY: This group meets at church on Tuesday mornings, 9:15 a.m., through November 21. The study is called: “Named by God” by Kasey Van Norman. For more information, call Barb Mueller.

WELCA: November 1 at noon. Bring your lunch and join us for a new year of study. We meet the first Wednesday of each month at OSLC. All women are welcome! For more information, please call Shirley Geary.

MEN’S FRIDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY @ OSLC. This group meets at 6:30 am the first and third Fridays of each month. See calendar for dates. Call Bob Ricci for further information.

Council Corner

Each month we provide highlights from the previous month’s council meeting. The church council normally meets the second Sunday of the month at 12:30PM. The ex-ecutive committee (John Hanks, president; Bizzi Drinkaus, vice president; Bob Ricci, treasurer; Steve Degn, last council president, Pastor Barbara) generally meets the week before the full council. If you have any new ideas or suggestions for improve-ment in our congregation, please let a member of the executive committee know so they can discuss it at their meeting and direct the idea to the appropriate ministry team, staff member, or the council as a whole. Here are highlights of the September and October meetings:

Transition Team was appointed: Members are: Paul Pearson, Bob Bishop, Jenny Tempfer, Melinda Rogers, Aileen Johanson and Dorothy Darnell. They have begun meeting regularly to assist Pastor Barbara in

the transition process and will be contacting each member of Our Saviour’s in the near future. Property: The double doors near Pastor’s office were repaired to close properly. Puerto Rico Relief: We are collecting items to mail to Puerto Rico to assist in the relief effort. Please see list in this newsletter and the insert in the bulletin. Financial Report: Bob Ricci presented a current financial report for the year-to-date as well as projections

for the remainder of 2017. OSLC website. Bob Ricci suggested that the ministry liaisons contact Dale on a monthly basis about any

new happenings, pictures, etc. to keep our website updated.

Details on these, as well as all everything else from the September and October 2017 Council Meetings can be found in the Minutes. Please feel free to ask any Council member questions that you may have on these issues. **The Council Minutes are posted on the bulletin board across from the water fountain.**

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION BEGINS FOR ALL AGES ON SEPTEMBER 17

Children AND Youth Sunday School meets at 10:00 am each Sunday from September through May.

Please note: Classes will NOT meet on Sunday, November 19 because there is only one service for Grace in Action Sunday.

Sunday Adult Bible Study: meets in the South Wing, each Sunday, September through May, 10:00 a.m. All are welcome and no experience is necessary! Come and deepen your spiritual life through this

class.

This Sunday, November 5th, we take time to remember all those who

have gone before us in the journey of faith and are now at home in the

church triumphant. We give thanks for the life of Oscar Scheibe. As part

of the service we will take time to remember those members and regular

attendees who have passed on. We will also take time to light candles in

memory of anyone we know and love who is now in their eternal

home. 3

THANK YOU AND STREAMLINING FAMILY PROMISE SIGN UP A huge THANK YOU to everyone who so selflessly served during the hosting week of October 29 through

Nov. 5. It is through your efforts that the families have a warm, safe place to stay.

Family Promise has also initiatied a new sign-up process! By using a account,

we will be able to volunteer, track, message, and receive reminders for Family Prom-

ise shifts and donations online. For those who would rather sign up at church, we will

have computers and help available in the Round Room a few weeks ahead of time. We want to accommodate

everyone, so calling or emailing Cathy Ricci to request that she sign you up will also be an option.

Puerto Rico Relief Effort Our Saviour’s is working to help provide relief to the victims of the devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico. As part of that

effort, we are collecting items that have been listed as needed by the citizens of Puerto Rico. If you want to donate mon-ey, please do so in the form of a check or your Thrivent Choice Dollars and write “Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief” on the

memo line. The money will be used first to offset shipping costs of the donations. There is a collection barrel in the Round Room. Thank you!

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child collects shoeboxes filled with gifts and delivers them to chil-

dren in need around the world. Every one of these shoebox gifts is an opportunity to

spread the Gospel. You can be a part of this worldwide effort.

1) Take one or more shoeboxes home. 2) Fill with a small toy, hygiene items and school supplies.

3) Pray for the child(ren) who will receive your gift(s). 4) Include a $9 donation to cover shipping

costs.

5) Place a label on the box(on the information brochures) designating a Boy or a Girl and the age level.

6) Return to the church NLT Sunday, November 19. 5

Variety is the word for the Sundays in November. This month brings to close the

gospel readings from Matthew, and prepares us for a new church year in Advent with

readings from Mark and John. All Saints Sunday, “Grace in Action” Sunday, Christ the

King Sunday, and Thanksgiving Eve are all celebrated this month.
