WICHITA A’S MEETING MINUTES October 24, 2016

One of the greatest attributes of the Wichita A’s membership is their caring nature and generosity, on No-vember 28 we will demonstrate this once again with our annual food drive and Charity Auction. This is always a fun time as we battle and bid it out for a special purchase and occasional treasure. The best part is the funds and food collected that evening will go to local charities that we hope will brighten the holidays of those less fortunate, so bring some great items to auction, come ready to bid

and be sure to attend this fun event. I would like to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Speaking of New Year’s don’t forget to dig out your long underwear and mittens and join the fun on the first tour of 2017 on New Year’s Day.

Best Regards, Randy Frazer, President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

WICHITA A’S BOARD MEETING SUMMARY October 24, 2016

Your Wichita A’s board met on October 24th for their first meeting. Board members are: President Randy Frazer, Past Pres. Dennis Ellerman, V Pres. Mike James, Treasurer James Sharp, Secretary Dawna Rug-gles, and members at large Bonita Graham and Paul Hayes. The following items were discussed/decided:

To again ask the McCurdy Auction House to run our charity auction coming up in November.

To again have a picnic at Watson Park on May 22 and the annual Bunco Party on February 18.

To contribute $100 to the V-8 Club for sponsoring All Ford’s Day

To find a way to simplify getting our club logo on apparel Find ways to encourage young people to join our club To not pursue registration reimbursement from the

Sunflower Swap Meet The next board meeting will be held on Monday, April 17th at 7:00 in the Ruggles home. All members are invited to attend. Those wanting to see a copy of the offi-cial minutes need to let Dawna know.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

It is that time of the year when everyone is extreme-ly busy making plans with the families over the holidays. Richard and I would like to wish everyone a lot of fun and happiness over Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years.

Please Note: “There will not be a newsletter nor a club meet-ing during the month of December for the Wichita A’s.” Linda Kibbe, Editor

Following our regular monthly meeting in November will be our annual char ity auction and canned food drive. Ed Geisen has again offered to take care of our canned foods so deposit your food donations into Ed’s truck when you come to the meeting. The food donations will be delivered to the Kansas Food Bank. Bring auction items that are in good condition and worthy of an auction. No junk, please! Bake sale items are always appreciated. Our three charity choices this year are: Midian Plane of Mercy-the transportation unit of the Midian Shrine. Its purpose is to transport patients and their parents to and from Shrine Hospitals for treatment be it vans or airplanes. The Shrines in this area serve an average of over 600 children a year. Habitat for Humanity- where houses are built for those in need. Helping families break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security not only helps families help themselves, it helps our entire communities. Share the Season- a nonprofit local effort to offer one-time assistance to people who need help because of hard-ships such as job loss or illness. Many of these folks don’t qualify for traditional forms of assistance and usually need just a little help to get back on their feet. All 3 charities qualify for income tax deductions but to get the deduction, you must pay by check. Checks need to

be made out to the charity and NOT to the club. Keep track of how much you spent at the auction, choose one of the three

charities, and pay at the back table before you leave. Let’s make this year the biggest giving year yet!!

Our inventory of logo attire has been pretty well depleted. Instead of purchasing a large quantity of new inventory

and holding the items for sale, the board is considering a "pay as you go" option, with members obtaining their own shirt

and having a local facility embroider the Wichita A's logo. We have identified two facilities that can provided the requested

service. Please review the information below which describe the various cost options. We will plan to have a brief discus-

sion at the November 2016 meeting to address any questions and then have a "show of hands" vote to select a go forward

plan.

Option 1: US Logo

Digitizing Fee: None Cost to embroider one (1) customer supplied or purchase shirt from US Logo: $ 13.52 (thirteen dollars & fifty-two cents) Price break at six (6) articles with a piece price of $9.82. Option 2: Logo Envy

Digitizing Fee: $50.00 (fifty dollars) one time fee. Cost to embroider one (1) customer supplied shirt: $10.00 (ten dollars) Cost to embroider one (1) shirt purchased from Logo Envy: $5.00 (five dollars) Price break at thirteen (13) articles with a piece part price of $7.00 (seven dollars) you supply shirt and $5.00 for shirt purchased from Logo Envy. Option 3:

Choose one of the two facilities to provide all Wichita A's logo services.

Option 4:

Set up Logo Envy and let each member choose from US Logo or Logo Envy to have their shirt embroidered.

Your Regional Committee is working hard to get all the activities, events, and meals in place. We plan to have some cars on display inside the hotel during the meet. The great thing about using the Ramada Inn for the Regional is that almost every-thing can take place within the hotel. Most meaning men's and la-dies’ luncheons, evening dinners, and evening social activities. If you haven't been to the Ramada since it took out its pool, you will find a nice socializing area where the pool used to be located. Nancy is working on a dis-play of everyone's hobby activities that will allow attendees to min-gle and talk about their hobbies and other inter-ests. A to Z will be here at least early in the week making parts avail-able to the travel-ers who may have used some of their spare inventory.

A meet like this takes many members to be successful. To this end we will have sign-up sheets out on the tables at future chapter meetings so that you can choose the way in which you can help. We will need many to help out with the registration as people sign in to the meet. Monday will be the big registration day, but we would like to handle some early birds on Sunday. Many activities like tours, luncheons, and car games take place during the day. We will need assistance in directing attendees to appropriate places, help with car games, and the tours. Tour details are still being worked out like many other details, but we will need individuals to have a sweep trailer available to aid stranded A's as well as lead cars to get to the tour places. The tour to the zoo is coming along nicely. The zoo will be a most of the day experience with train rides, IMAX, lunch and, of course, the animals all set up for one fee.

Let's have a great meet, Submitted by Dale Jergensen

Bob Johnson Passes

Bob Johnson came to the Swap Meet in 2000 to help his good friend, Dean Goodman evaluate a 29 Model A Tudor that was being offered. Bob gave Dean his approval and the deal was made. Then the unexpected happened. Among the many cars for sale was a 29 Model A Roadster that was being offered by our member from Erie, Ks. Larry Simons. This car had a lot of appeal and Bob couldn't “take his eyes off it”. Bob called his wife Sue and the purchase was made. Bob and Sue, immediately joined the club and became

very active. That summer of 2000, they and the Goodmans attended the MAFCA National meet in Kansas City. The Johnsons continued to attend most all of the local tours, then after a couple of years they decided they would be more comforta-ble with a more spacious Model A, like a Fordor. Bob, found a restored 30 Fordor in Peoria, Ill and brought it home. The car was mostly finished except for a few details which Bob took care of. He wasn't satisfied with the engine so he contract-ed John Stone to rebuild it. Before long they sold the Roadster and used the Fordor which they still have. Bob & Sue were always willing to help with tours and had us out to their home and acreage on North Greenwich Road where they raised Ostriches. Then Bob, who discovered our Swap Meet and Club by accident, volun-teered to be Swap Meet Chairman which he did for three consecutive years, 2004, 2005 & 2006. This, of course was a major commitment but he did a great job. In 2007 The Wichita A's sponsored a Regional Meet in Wichita and Bob was a big help with this meet when he coordinated an all day tour which included the, Nature Center, The Karg Art Class Company in Kechi and a meal and concert at The Praire Rose Chuckwagon. A couple of years ago Bob started to have health problems that slowed him down a quite a bit. He thought he was on the road to recovery but he had cirrhosis of the liver which was caused by cancer. He passed away on Oct. 10th at the age of 75. Our sympathy to Sue and the rest of the family.

When dressing in era styles, finding the appropriate shoes can be difficult. Even more so if you have a beach or sports outfit. Well, look no further than your Keds shoe store of 1931. Right out of the vintage catalog are the following styles. The illustrations and descriptions are off the pages of the Keds Catalog for 1931, United States Rubber Company, Buffalo, NY. Finding the right look in modern shoes is often challenging, however, these styles have not changed much. Good Luck!
