Dear Families,

We are well into the fall season with a chill in the air. Our annu-al musical had their tryouts the week of October 24th and re-hearsal will be in full swing. I love seeing our students getting involved! Speaking of getting involved, during the week of Oc-tober 24th, we brought back Red Ribbon week to promote a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. The week was sponsored by our Phoenix Peer Helpers under the guidance of Mr. Steve Gross! With the leaves falling, it is time for our annual “Rake and Run”. Phoenix Student Council, Peer Helpers and National Junior Honor Society are teaming up on November 4th to clean up the yards of our elderly neighbors who can use a little help around the yard. This is a great way to promote service to oth-ers, enjoy some fresh air and bring a little joy to others. This is just one of the ways our students and school serve our local community.

In academic news, we recently completed the annual MAP tests. This is an assessment of how your student is performing in reading and mathematics. The Measure of Academic Perfor-mance compares students to others in the nation and measures performance over time. This year we will take anoth-er assessment in winter as well as spring. Results are used to help us identify who may need a particular intervention during PIE time.

Were you able to make it to conferences? Are you tracking your student’s grades in Infinite Campus? Staying connected either in person or via IC is critical to ensure your child is pro-gressing in academics. Not sure how to check grades? All stu-dents should know how to check their grades. Ask your son or daughter to show you their grades and their class assignments in Infinite Campus.

All-District Orchestra Celebration Concert

Thursday, November 10 in the DDHS Auditorium

The All-District Orchestra Celebration is an exciting way to start out a year of wonderful string music. This program will in-clude a few selections performed by each orchestra in the Delavan-Darien School District. It is always amazing to see what the 4th Grade Strings can do after only 2 months of lessons. And, it’s inspiring to hear the progress from one level to the next.

Orchestra parents are encouraged to ask their children to play for them a little preview of the concert material at home. You will hear music of a variety of cultures and styles. Students should practice their scales at home too.

Please make note that there are two start times. Due to the size of the audience for this program we need to split the pro-gram in two parts. All parents and students are welcome to attend the full program. Phoenix students need to be in the DDHS Choir Room to unpack and tune no later than 7:00PM. Students need to wear their proper concert attire: dressy black pants or skirts and dressy white tops.

STARBUCK Winners

PBIS Update!

Phoenix Middle School uses the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support system (PBIS) to

help our students grow into respectful and respected young adults. One of the things we are

doing for PBIS is rewarding students who are doing the right thing with “Star Bucks”. Stu-

dents can turn in their “Star Bucks” for weekly, monthly and quarterly drawings as well as use

them for other programs and activities throughout the year.

Phoenix Middle School Sports

This year athletics are FREE!! We would love for your child to join one or more of the sports Phoenix offers!

In order for your child to join, you will need to follow 5 steps:

Step 1: Your child needs a Physical Examination. If your child has had a physical since April 1, 2015 and we have a green athletic card on file filled out by you and your physician from last school year, then you will need to fill out a yellow alternate year participation card for this school year. The yellow card does not need a doctor’s signature. If your child has not had a physical since April 1, 2015, then you will need to have a green athletic card filled out by you and your physician. If your child has had a physical since April

1, 2015, but we never received a green athletic card from you, then you will need to fill one out and simply ask your physician to sign the green card verifying the date of your child’s physical exam.

Step 2: Fill out the white emergency card (on a half sheet). This is usually attached to the green athletic card or yellow alternate year participation card.

Step 3: You and your child will need to read the concussion informational packet and sign the agreement form.

Step 4: You and your child will need to read and sign the Athletic Code.

Step 5: Remind your child to show up for the first day of practice!!

Girls Volleyball (7th & 8th grade) = Season completed

Flag Football (6th, 7th, & 8th grade) = Season completed

Boys Basketball (7th & 8th grade) = Began October 24

Boys & Girls Intramural Basketball (6th grade) = Season begins on December 15th

Parent Tips and Tricks

Learning Skills Tips: Good Study Habits to Help Your Child Succeed in School

Part I:

1. Get Organized.

Between homework, tests and extracurricular activities, it’s all too easy for things to slip through the cracks. A planner can help your child keep everything organized and students should write down assignments, appointments and to-do lists.

2. Know the Expectations.

Students shouldn’t have any surprises when it come to how and what they will be graded on. Your student should feel comfortable ap-proaching teachers with questions about grading and assignments at any time.

3. Designate a Study Area.

At home, studying in front of the TV won’t be the best use of your son or daughter’s time. Help your child by providing a quiet, well-lit, low-traffic space for study time. Take it one step further and institute a “blackout” policy with no cell phones until schoolwork is done.

4. Develop a Study Plan.

Students need to know when a test will take place, the types of ques-tions that will be included and the topics that will be covered. From there, your student should create a study plan and allow ample time to prepare.

5. Think Positively.

Being in the right mindset can make all the difference. Encourage your child to think positively when studying or heading into an exam and by all means, avoid catastrophic thinking. Help him or her turn negative statements into positive ones .

How to Regulate Your Student’s Video Game Usage

The GameDr Video Game Timer is an easy-to-use electronic time management device for video game systems and

other electronic devices. Parents simply set the time allowed for video game play and when the allotted time is up, the

game timer automatically powers off the game system. Players even get 10-minute and 1 -minute warnings so games

can be saved. Take the stress out of managing the amount of time your child

spends playing video games with the game timer!

How It Works:

1. Set the Timer.

2. Plug In the Video Game Console or TV.

Back to School Reading Tips: Installment 1 of 9

Each month, this section of the newsletter will provide you with tips to parents work on reading strategies at home with their children.

1. Set a routine.

Setting routines for mornings and evenings—including nutritious meals and an early bedtime—helps children cope with stresses that may arise from starting a new school year. Routines have many benefits, namely, children feel comfortable and stable in their environment, resulting in more cooperative behavior inside and outside of school. Children who are overtired, who eat too many fatty or sugary foods, or who are coping with inconsistent schedules are prone to behavioral problems and may find it increasingly difficult to concentrate in school.

2. Read at home.

Reading regularly at home provides children with the practice they need to become great readers. Remem-ber, “The more kids read, the better they read,” and the same holds true for the opposite effect, “the less kids read, the poorer they’ll read.” Beyond practice time, reading at home reinforces a positive attitude around reading—kids start to enjoy reading!

The best way to incorporate reading in the household is to devote 20 to 40 minutes, at the same time every evening, to family reading time. Make it part of a routine, as discussed in tip #1. Another fun idea is to have children read to their pets, siblings, or stuffed animals, like a game.

Food for Fines – November 1 to 30

Do your part to replenish the food pantry supplies at the same time you reduce your fines for overdue li-brary materials. For each nonperishable food item you bring in, we’ll take $1 off your overdue fines. All do-nations must be in good condition and not past their expiration or sell-by dates. (Ramen noodles and gelatin mixes will not be accepted.) Food for Fines does not apply to charges for damaged or lost materials. Learn to Knit! – Wednesdays, November 2, 9, & 16 at 6 p.m. Registration is required. Nancy Lee will teach knitting basics to beginners from elementary age through adult. Learn basic stitches and go home with a completed project! Attend one or all three sessions; materials are supplied.

Knit and Crochet Club – Mondays, November 7 & 14 and Wednesday, November 30 at 6 p.m. For all ages and experience levels, Knit and Crochet Club meets at 6 p.m. on the scheduled dates. Bring your own project to work on, share your expertise, and learn from others.

Book Buzz: Parent-Child Book Club – Wednesday, November 9 at 4 p.m. Come one, come all… to a book club aimed at 8-12 year olds and their parents! We’ll meet the second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. to discuss our chosen book, have snacks, and do an activity or craft! Parents/caregivers are encouraged—but not required—to participate. This month we’re reading Saving Wonder by Mary Knight. Have you heard about the latest Book Buzz?

Tween & Teen Insta-Wreath – Thursday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required. Make a statement and display some of your favorite memories with a one-of-a-kind wreath created by you.

Estimadas Familias,

Estamos bien en la temporada de otoño con un frío en el aire. Nuestra musical anual tuvo sus pruebas la semana del 24 de octubre y el ensayo estará en plena marcha. Me encanta ver que nuestros estu-diantes están involucrando! Hablando de involucrarse, durante la semana del 24 de octubre, nos trajo la semana del listón rojo para promover un estilo de vida libre de drogas y alcohol. La semana fue patrocinado por nuestros Compañeros Ayudantes de la escuela Phoe-nix bajo la dirección del Sr. Steve Gross!

Las hojas ya se están cayendo, es hora de nuestro "Rake and Run" anual. Los estudiantes del Consejo de la Escuela Phoenix, los Com-pañeros Ayudantes y la Sociedad Nacional Juvenil de Honor se van a unir el 4 de noviembre para limpiar los patios de nuestros vecinos de edad avanzada que pueden utilizar un poco de ayuda en el patio. Esta es una gran manera de promover el servicio a los demás, disfrutar de un poco de aire fresco y llevar poco alegría a los demás. Esto es sólo una de las maneras en que nuestros estudiantes y la escuela sirven a nuestra comunidad local.

En las noticias académicas, recientemente hemos terminado las pruebas anuales de MAP. Esta es una evaluación de cómo el estu-diante está trabajando en la lectura y las matemáticas. La medida de Rendimiento Académico se compara con otros estudiantes en la nación y mide el rendimiento con el tiempo. Este año vamos a tener otra evaluación en el invierno, así como en la primavera. Los resulta-dos se utilizan para ayudar a identificar que puede necesitar una inter-vención en particular durante el tiempo de PIE.

Pudieron venir a las conferencias? ¿Estan siguiendo las calificaciones de su hijo en Infinite Campus? Estar conectados ya sea en persona o por medio de I.C es crítico para asegurar que su niño este progresan-do en el mundo académico. No está seguro de cómo comprobar los grados? Todos los estudiantes deben saber cómo comprobar sus calificaciones. Pregúntele a su hijo o hija que le muestre sus califica-ciones y sus trabajos de clase de Infinite Campus.

Concierto Orquestal de Todo el Distrito

Jueves, 10 de noviembre en el Auditorio DDHS

La Celebración Orquestal de todo el distrito es una manera emocionante de comenzar un año de maravillosa músi-ca de cuerdas. Este programa incluirá algunas selecciones realizadas por cada orquesta en el Distrito Escolar Delavan-Darien. Siempre es sorprendente ver lo que estudiantes de cuarto grado puede hacer después de sólo 2 meses de clases Y, es inspirador escuchar el progreso de un nivel a otro.

Se recomienda a los padres de estudiantes en orquesta que animen a sus hijos pidiéndoles que toquen un peque-ño adelanto del material del concierto en casa. Usted escuchará música de una variedad de culturas y estilos. Los estudian-tes deben practicar sus escalas en casa también.

Por favor tome nota que hay dos horas de inicio. Debido al tamaño de la audiencia de este programa tenemos que dividir el programa en dos partes. Todos los padres y estudiantes están invitados a asistir el programa completo. Estudiantes de Phoenix necesitan estar en el salón de Coro en DDHS para prepararse antes de las 7:00 PM. Los estudiantes tienen que llevar el traje apropiado para el concierto: pantalones o faldas negras de vestir y camisas / blusas blancas elegantes.

La Escuela Media Phoenix usa el Sistema de Intervención y apoyo de Comportamiento Positivo (Positive Behavior In-

tervention and Support: PBIS por sus siglas en ingles) para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a crecer siendo adultos jó-

venes respetuosos y respetados. Una de las cosas que estamos hacienda para PBIS es recompensar con “Star Bucks” a

los estudiantes que hacen lo correcto. Los estudiantes pueden entregar sus “Star Bucks” para rifas semanales, men-

suales y al final del cuarto escolar y también los pueden usar durante otros programas y actividades durante el año.

Deportes de la Escuela Phoenix

Cómo unirse a atletismo

Este año el atletismo es GRATIS!! Nos encantaría que su hijo este en uno o más de los deportes que ofre-ce la Escuela Phoenix! En orden para que su hijo este en deportes, usted tendrá que seguir los siguientes 5 pasos:

Paso 1: Su niño necesita un examen físico. Si su hijo ha tenido un físico desde 01 de abril de 2015, y tene-mos una tarjeta atlética verde llenada por usted y su médico desde el año pasado, deberá llenar una tarjeta de participación año alternativo amarillo para este año escolar. La tarjeta amarilla no es necesario tener la

firma de un médico. Si su hijo no ha tenido un físico desde 01 de abril de 2015, usted necesitará una tarjeta deportiva verde llenado por usted y su médico. Si su hijo ha tenido un físico desde 01 de abril de 2015, pero nunca recibió una tarjeta verde atlética de usted, entonces usted necesitará completar uno y simplemente pregunte que su médico firma la tarjeta verde verificando la fecha de examen físico de su hijo.

Paso 2: Llenar la tarjeta de emergencia blanco (media hoja). Generalmente se aplica a la tarjeta atlético verde o amarillo año alternativo de participa-ción.

: Buenos hábitos de Estudio para ayudar a su hijo tener éxito en la escuela

Parte I:

1. Organízate. Entre las tareas, pruebas y actividades extracurriculares, es muy fácil olvidarse de las cosas que ay que hacer. Un planificador puede ayudar a su hijo a mantener todo organizado. Allí, los estudiantes pueden escribir las tareas, citas y listas de tareas pendientes.

2. Conoce las expectativas. Los estudiantes no deben tener sorpresas cuando se trata de cómo y en que se basan las calificaciones. Su estudiante debe sentirse con-fortable cuando se acercan a un profesor con preguntas sobre la clasi-ficación y tareas en cualquier momento.

3. Designa un área de estudio. En casa, estudiando en frente de la televisión no es el mejor uso de tiempo de su hijo. Ayude a su hijo proporcionándole un lugar bien iluminado, espacio tranquilo, y con poco tráfico durante el tiempo de estudio. Tome un paso más allá y establezca una póliza de "apagón", sin teléfonos celulares hasta que se haga el trabajo escolar.

4. Desarrolla un Plan de Estudio. Los estudiantes necesitan saber cuando una prueba se llevará a cabo, el tipo de preguntas que se incluirán y los temas que se tratarán. A partir de ahí, el estudiante debe crear un plan de estudios y permitir suficiente tiempo para prepararse.

5. Se Positivo Un estado mental positivo hace una gran diferencia! Anime a su hijo a pensar de manera positiva al estudiar o cuando tomen un examen. A todo costo, eviten el pensamiento catastrófico. Ayúdelo a convertir declaraciones negativas en positivas.

Cómo Regular El Uso de Videojuegos de Su Estudiante

GameDr es un dispositivo electrónico (temporizador de juego) fácil de usar para sistemas de videojuegos y

otros dispositivos electrónicos. Los padres simplemente establecen el tiempo permitido para el juego de

video y cuando el tiempo asignado se ha terminado, el dispositivo electrónico apaga automáticamente el

sistema de juego. Los jugadores incluso reciben advertencias a los 10 mi-

nutos y 1 minuto para que puedan guardar el juego. Elimine el estrés de

manejar la cantidad de tiempo que su hijo pasa jugando juegos de vídeo

con el temporizador de juego!

Como Funciona:

1. Ajuste el temporizador.

2. Enchufe el sistema de videojuegos a la televisión.

3. Cierre el GameDr con el lazo de cierre incluido.

Cada mes, esta sección del boletín le proporcionará consejos para los padres que están trabajando en estra-tegias de lectura en casa con sus hijos.

1. Establezca una rutina.

Establecer rutinas para las mañanas y tardes-incluyendo comidas nutritivas y acostarse temprano-ayuda a los niños a enfrentarse a tensiones que pueden surgir por el empiezo de un nuevo año escolar. Las rutinas tienen muchas ventajas, principalmente, que los niños se sientan cómodos y estables en su entorno, lo que se traduce en más comportamiento cooperativo dentro y fuera de la escuela. Los niños que están bien can-sados, quien comer demasiados alimentos azucarados o grasos, o que están frentados con horarios incom-patibles son propensos a tener problemas de comportamiento y pueden tener cada vez más dificultades para concentrarse en la escuela.

2. Leer en Casa.

Leyendo regularmente en el hogar proporciona a los niños con la práctica que es necesaria para convertirse en grandes lectores. Recuerde, "lo más que un niño lee, lo mejor que él podrá leer", y lo mismo sucede con el efecto opuesto, “lo menos que un niño lea, su lectura será peor." Más allá de la práctica, la lectura en el hogar refuerza una actitud positiva en la lectura-niños empiezan a disfrutar de la lectura!

La mejor manera de incorporar la lectura en el hogar es dedicar 20 a 40 minutos, a la misma hora cada no-

che, a la hora de la lectura familiar. Hacen parte de una rutina, como se discutió en el consejo nº 1. Otra bue-

na idea es que los niños le lean a sus mascotas, hermanos, o animales de peluche, como un juego.

Esté en contacto con la biblioteca para hacer una cita para utilizar esta sorprendente pieza de tecnología! Alimentos para Multas - Noviembre 1 al 30 Haga su parte para reponer la despensa de alimentos y al mismo tiempo ayudar a reducir sus multas por el retraso del material de la biblioteca. Para cada elemento de alimentos no perecederos que traiga, les rebaja-mos un $1 de sus multas atrasadas. Todas las donaciones deben estar en buen estado y no más allá de su caducidad o fecha de caducidad. (Los fideos ramen y mezclas de gelatina no serán aceptadas.) Alimentos pa-ra las multas no se aplican a los cargos por materiales perdidos o dañados. Aprenda a Tejer! - Los Miércoles, 2, 9, y 16 de noviembre de las 6 p.m. Es necesario registrarse. Venga uno, vengan todos… para un club del libro destinado para niños de 8-12 años de edad y para sus pa-dres! Nos juntamos el segundo miércoles de cada mes a las 4 p.m. para discutir nuestro libro elegido, habrá bocadillos, y hacer una actividad o Arte Artesanía! Los padres de familia/tutores pueden venir pero no se requiere para participar. Este mes estamos leyendo Saving Wonder por Mary Knight. Usted ha oído acerca del último Libro de Buzz? Tween & Teen Insta-Wreath – Jueves 17 de noviembre a las 5:30 p.m. Es necesario registrarse. Haz una declaración y mostrar algunas de sus memorias favoritas con una corona creado por ti. (Sí, tú!) Haz una para ti o para un regalo… De cualquiera manera, va ser IMPRESIONANTE! Todos los materiales serán proporcionados. El espacio es limitado, por eso es necesario registrarse.
