Weight Loss Support Groupby Trish Hastings-Sargent

About 6 months ago a small group decided to meet every Saturday morning at 9 AM at the Hairy Cactus Beauty Salon next to Fred’s Arena 9 to 10 am to support each other on our weight loss journey.

Right now it is Lisa Wagner, owner of the Hairy Cactus, a lady who recently had heart surgery, my husband John and myself.

When we started we decided to keep it to ourselves. Being over weight is hard. We wanted a safe environment in which we could share what the obstacles were in our life that were barriers to our weight loss success. We needed ideas and the perspective of others to help us.

We weighed in, exchanged recipes, and supported each other. We lost weight, put it back on, and kept trying.

When we started John, Lisa and I were counting points, the Weight Watchers way. The other lady has been doing something different.

So here is where we are now. We would love new members to join our group. Our space is small so the number of folks will be limited.

Here is what we do:We weigh in, and right now I keep the record on my phone. We

talk about what was successful for us this past week and what barriers we encountered. If we tried a great recipe we would share it. The recipe must have the nutritional values so no matter what diet program a person is on they could see if the recipe was compatible with their diet.

If we gained, we chat about what we did different that could have had an impact.

Everyone is doing something different.John and I have been on WW on and off for many years, the

weight just did not come off and stay off. So we decided to try something different. My husband John started the HCG diet (our doctor supports this) on Oct 2nd and has lost 25 lbs to date. It is 500 calories a day for 3 to 6 weeks and he takes HCG drops .

I wanted to do the same diet but my health issues complicated things so I followed a modified menu protocol of that diet and have lost 10 lbs to date.

If you would like to join us this Sat at 9 AM to see if this group would be good for you please give me a call at 520-247-8222 to make sure we have room, we will be happy to see you.

Turkey Fun Fact From cnn.com

Talking turkey: Why is it called a turkey? Oh boy, this will take some explainin'. Back in the day, the

Europeans took a liking to the guinea fowls imported to the continent.

Since the birds were imported by Turkish merchants, the English called them turkeys.

Later, when the Spaniards came to America, they found a bird that tasted like those guinea fowls. When they were sent to Europe, the English called these birds "turkeys" as well.

The Sierrita Mountain Livestock

4-H Club Is In Full SwingTracy E. Nielsen

The Sierrita Mountain Livestock 4-H Club is in full swing, with the petting zoo at Buckelew Farms taking up most of our time and manpower.  Each year the 4-H Club gathers the animals and makes the pens and spends October weekends out with the animals.

The money that is raised by donations goes back into the community to assist with events.   We assist the Fire Department with gifts for the community as well as wrapping the gifts that come in.  It is important that the members understand that giving a donation is just the beginning.  Community Service kicks in to place by spending time at the fire station wrapping presents.  Donation was also given to Serenity Baptist Church to help with the food baskets.

Project members should be getting and some already have their animals for the 4-H year.  Our membership has increased this year by about 30 % and we are working hard to bring up those numbers.

We wanted to let everyone know we had a great time at the Three Points Community Festival and the kids were happy to be such a big part of so much fun.  I hope you picked up your information on the local 4-H clubs while you were there.

And finally we hope that the Robles Ranchers 4-H club Tractor Days was a success.

IRS Scam ReturnsOctober 21, 2015

Recently, a large number of people have received calls from the Internal Revenue Service. They are told they owe the IRS an undisclosed amount of money for past taxes. The caller tells the person if the balance is not paid immediately a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

The victims are told to go to Wal-Mart and purchase a pre-paid debit card for the amount owed. Once the card is purchased, the victims contact the suspect and provide the number on the back of the card.

Here are a few tips to prevent you from becoming a victim:

• The IRS will not call and advise you of back taxes owed. You will receive a letter in the mail.

• The IRS will not threaten you over the phone.

• Do not give your personal information to someone who calls you.

• Call the IRS to see if you actually owe back taxes.

• Call 9-1-1 and make a report if you are a victim of the scam.

This scam was here last year and we received numerous calls. Please use the tips provided to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Sorry The Fence Post Was Late This Monthby Trish Hastings-Sargent

Dear Readers and Advertisers

The Fence Post is later than usual this month. Over the last two months I have encountered some unexpected health issues that have left me unable to sit at my computer and work on both creating the Fence Post and doing the billing to our advertisers.

My weeks have been taken up with Doctors appointments, waiting for referrals, tests and more tests.

Whew! The doctors have kept adjusting my meds and only the last few days have I finally started to feel better. They have no idea why my health status changed so dramatically. So there are more tests in my future.

So my friends, I apologize if I have missed an article you sent me, or you requested an ad and it did not get in. My organization this month was not up to the level of detail it normally is.

Being sick has brought me to the realization that I must have a Fence Post back up person who can step in if I am unable, or if I just need a break. Fortunately there is just such a person who has volunteered to help. Her name is Anne.

She and I work on different computer equipment. We have tried to match the style of the Fence Post so you, our readers and advertisers, do not see a difference. Alas this has been a barrier to our success.

I am giving advance notice that the Fence Post may look different month to month. It will depend on who is doing the creative that month. Also our goal was always to e-mail out the edition by the 25th or 26th of the month. This date may change month to month.

In order to make this easy for either Anne or I to get your articles please send them only to [email protected]. All advertising will go thru John Sargent as usual.

If you have a question you can still contact me at [email protected] or give me a call at 520-247-8222.

I thank you all for your understanding and support.

Turkey Fun Fact From cnn.com

A tradition is born: TV dinners have Thanksgiving to thank. In 1953, someone at Swanson misjudged the number of frozen turkeys it would sell that Thanksgiving -- by 26 TONS! Some industrious soul came up with a brilliant plan: Why not slice up the meat and repackage with some trimmings on the side? Thus, the first TV dinner was born!

DESERT HARVESTBy Donna Derosia

Owner of Kestrel Kafe & Market

It’s my favorite time of year to truly celebrate harvest time in the desert. The cooler temperatures and shorter days inspire me to use all the great seasonal fruits and vegetables in new ways. The chilies are still producing and are prime for combining with seasonal fruits and vegetables to give a new twist to old recipes. I recently made a great peach compote by combining peaches, Serrano chiles, lime and cilantro. It’s a great sweet and hot treat to use as a topping on crackers or bread. It’s simple to cook up on the stove and will store for months in

the fridge. The squash abound with endless ideas for stuffing, roasting and mashing with all kinds of locally sourced accompaniments. We have citrus, quince, pomegranates and plenty of fresh garden greens available at farmer’s markets and backyard gardens to create so many new and healthy gastronomic combinations. We don’t have to go far to get some juniper berries and desert verbena to season meats. Visit one of our many local farms to pick your own fruit or pumpkins. Foods all taste better when you pick them yourself.

Fall gardens in our area have so many opportunities for diversity. We have growing seasons that overlap and extend all the way through the winter. Greens and root veggies love our fall temperatures. Winter squash are maturing and provide a great opportunity to pair with greens and herbs in low fat, vitamin filled dishes. Legumes are great for your garden this time or year because they have nitrogen fixing effects in your soil.

It’s the perfect time of year to jump out of your comfort zone and explore the desert just a few miles from your back door. You’ll always be surprised at all the edible plants and beautiful flowers just steps away. Sunrise hikes are special this time of year with the cool air and spectacular sunrises we have had lately with the abundant rains. The rains have also brought out many new plants that we don’t usually see

this time of year. It’s amazing how a walk in the desert can change your attitude and outlook towards life and make you realize all the great things so close to us.This Thanksgiving how about visiting a farmer’s market or local farm and pick new and fresh fruits and veggies to give your Thanksgiving feast a local twist and taste. How about making a

smorgasbord from local fruits and veggies in all new combinations to really celebrate our local traditions and diversity of foods. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and celebrate all our natural desert abundance.

RCS (Robles Community Support, Inc)

We are happy to welcome the AZVeteran Resource Center & Community Pantry into our office space and look forward to supporting Debbie in her efforts to provide assistance to the Veterans and First Responders.  More information in the article below.

Our offices are growing and our community services are expanding.  We have been extremely fortunate in acquiring skilled volunteers to enhance our minor home repair program, so that we can address even more needs within the community.  The cold weather is fast approaching and we would like to remind those in need of utility assistance (wood, propane, gas, electricity)  that an empty propane tank or disconnect notice are not required to apply for regular assistance, make your appointments early keeping in mind that it takes up to 10 business days to process the applications.

The guitar portion of our music program has enrollment that is requiring us to add another session during the week and obtain more instruments.  If you have an acoustic guitar or any musical instrument,  that you would like to donate please contact us or drop it by the office.  We will be adding keyboard to the program soon,

thanks to an instrument donation from a community member.  Now I can't sing a lick, well I can sing but my talents definitely lay elsewhere... I am sure there are a few of you out there with a love for music that your talents don't live up to.  Why not get together, sing our hearts out, have some fun and maybe all our off key voices might just make some beautiful music!  If you are interested in joining a choral group, just for the joy of singing, with or without any talent, give us a call.

Our "Wish List" program is always available, if you have a need for items please let us know so that we don't miss any opportunities to fulfill that need in our travels around the community..

As always we are open to ideas and suggestions that you would like to see made available within our community.  Stop by and say hello anytime Monday - Friday from 8 am to 4 pm or visit our website http://roblescommunitysupport.org/   to learn more about us.

Enjoy the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday.

AZVeteran Resource Center & Community Pantry

When I was 8 years old I had a grand idea. I was going to grow up to be a Guardian Angel. I voiced this to the grownups around me, and it was very disheartening to learn that it wasn’t a real job. So all my life I have tried to satisfy that passion within myself to be just that, a Guardian Angel.

Being married to a military member we moved often. Each time I would try to find what would feed my passion. It was not until my children were grown and starting families of their own, a divorce, a career in Respiratory Therapy, and finding my favorite husband, that I found a place to put what I feel is my calling. That place is the AZVeteran Resource Center & Community Pantry. Three Points is a community that I love so much, and it is the first place I’ve felt at home since leaving Texas in 1977 to join the military.

The AZVeteran Resource Center & Community Pantry has opened for business as of Oct. 15, 2015. It is located in the Robles Community Support section of the building at 15390 W Ajo, Suite 2. We are the side entrance and conveniently sitting between Dollar General & Cindy Lou’s. The hours are Tue thru Thu 10am to 3pm and the phone number is 520-822-3154.

At AZVeteran Resource Center & Community Pantry we assist to provide resources to satisfy the needs of our Veterans, First Responders, while promoting growth in our community. We are not limited to Veterans & First Responder, resources are also available to help those in need within our community. Services are added continuously, and we encourage you to call, come in, and sit down to talk about what we can offer you.

The AZVeteran Resource Center & Community Pantry has many resources locally and nationally and keeps growing. Feed

Our Vets (www.feedourvets.org) based in Utica, NY; Cell Phone For Soldiers; AmazonSmile; Southern VA Medical Center, and Robles Community Support, Inc. right here in Three Points, just to mention a few.

We operate 100% on donations and there are no fees associated with any services given. Assistance can be anything from clothing, food pantry, household items, VA assistance, explore employment opportunities in the area, community garden, helping with benefits earned and services needed, and we are wi-fi accessible. Soon we will be hosting breakfast and lunch with dates to be announced for the community. There are many good things coming your way and we are always focusing on more.

Food box distribution will begin in November, on the 3rd & 4th Wed, that is the 18th & 25th. More information is available about this when we sit down together. You will need to bring Photo ID, proof of address, and DD214 for our military folks. I look forward to meeting all of you, see you soon.

Fill The Ambulance in

DecemberBy Steve Knode

In December, the Three Points Fire Department will have the "Fill the Ambulance" again.

In December the ambulance will be at the Family Dollar and Dollar General for gifts and donations,  these may be also taken to the fire station as well.

Last year 23 families were assisted with many gifts as your smiles were shared.

The Three Points Fire Stations is very pleased to have assisted in passing out 55 car seats during our Community Festival.

These were acquired through a grant from the TMC Hospital in Tucson, at a cost of $155 for each seat!

Thank you TMC for thinking of our Three Points children and their safety.

How to Contribute School Tax CreditsWell, first of all, it costs you nothing and gives your school

money for extracurricular activities. Arizona law (ARS 43-1098.01) allows taxpayers to receive a tax credit for donations that benefit students in our community. Married couples filling jointly can receive a tax credit of up to $400.00; for couples filing separately the amount is up to $200.00; and for individuals the amount is up to $200.00.

The Arizona School Tax Credit satisfies your Arizona Tax Liability dollar for dollar. The money that you contribute to Arizona Public Schools for extra curricular activities is money that you would pay in Arizona Income Tax, but you can make the choice to send it directly to your favorite Arizona Public School. The school benefits and you have made the choice on how your tax dollars are spent.

The credit is equal to the amount contributed to the schools. The credit is limited to:

Married Filing Jointly - $400.00 Married Filing Separately - $200.00

Single or Head of Household - $200.00

When tax time comes, just figure your tax liability as usual and then indicate that you have already paid a portion of this liability by contributing to Arizona Public Schools. The credit will not reduce your tax liability past zero. Any unused credit will carry forward for five (5) years.

Any individual filing an Arizona Income Tax Return can use the credit.

Just four easy steps will do it!

Decide which school you wish to support (listed on the form).

Decide which extracurricular activity you wish to support (choices on form).

Make out a check or money order for up to $400, made out to Altar Valley School District #51, then fill out and attach your check to the downloadable form on the top right corner of this page.

Mail or deliver the check and form to the district office (address below).

Remember...this contribution costs you nothing. Pay it to the school of your choice or pay it to the Arizona Department of Revenue.

To contribute to the School Tax Credits program, simply click on the "Tax Credits Form" link above to launch the required form. Print and complete the form and either bring or send the form and your money or check to:

Dear Altar Valley Families,

As the weather starts to cool down from the hot summer days, we note a chill in the air as we get our children ready for school each morning. Fall also means that Veterans Day, Election Day, and the holidays are right around the corner. Before you begin to plan for Thanksgiving Day celebrations, I want to remind you all to get out and vote on November 3. I also encourage you to take time a week later on Veterans Day, November 11, to thank a veteran and reflect on the sacrifices made by them and their families.

I know most of us look forward to Thanksgiving Day - enjoying a few days off from school and work, great food, and football! However, it is also a time to reflect on all the things for which we are thankful. One of the many symbols associated with the Thanksgiving holiday is the cornucopia, a basket often overflowing with produce, flowers, and nuts. The cornucopia, also called a horn of plenty, is a symbol of abundance and nourishment. At this time of year, I invite you to take

a few moments to talk with your children about the people for which you are thankful and encourage your child to do the same. I know, personally, I am thankful for being a part of the Altar Valley All-Star family!

At Altar Valley School District we are thankful for your support as we work together in the best interest of our students. On behalf of the entire Altar Valley staff, we wish you a happy Thanksgiving and hope your cornucopia overflows with abundance.

Happy Turkey Day! Dr. Dave Dumon

VolunteeringBy Evelyn See, Parent Involvement Coordinator

Volunteering is a great way for families to become part of the All-Star team in the Altar Valley School District. So far this year, many parents have supported our school with CBM testing, making copies and laminating for teachers, Book Fairs, Picture Day, Student Council fundraisers, 6th Grade Fundraiser, and the Art Show for the Community Festival.

There are still many more opportunities to volunteer. At Robles, the 4th Graders will be having fundraisers to help earn funds for their annual Mt. Lemmon trip.; Parents are encouraged to donate items, help with set up, cook pancakes, serve food, or sell baked goods for the Pumpkin Pancake dinner on November 19 and the Bake Sale on December 15. Teachers are excited to welcome reading and math partners in their classes to help students that need extra support. Ms. Heath is looking for costume, makeup and stage hand helpers for a play on December 18 at the middle school.

AVMS student council is requesting assistance with planning for the next Christmas Parade, fundraisers, and Student store. Many of our activities require a helping hand from parents like you. Becoming a volunteer is easy. Just fill out the registration form insert in this month’s school newsletter issue and return it to school. Or you can call Robles Elementary School and ask for Evelyn. It’s that easy!!

Dear Robles Families,

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a restful fall break.  We are now into our second quarter of school.  We are still working hard on our daily math skills.  Check with your child's teacher to see what your child's goal is and what you can do to help.  By the end of the year we want all students to master their basic math skills so that they can move forward and conquer more complicated mathematical computations.  By the end of first grade, students should be able to complete 40 basic addition problems in two minutes.  This means

that students shouldn't need to count on their fingers to add numbers less than ten.  Each grade level has similar expectations.  Ask your child what their goal is.  Make it a game to see how many math problems they can complete in one minute.  Try each day to beat the score.  Your child has a similar reading goal.  It is not a requirement for students to speed read a passage but they should be able to read fluently.  Fluency means that the student should be able to read sentences at the same rate of speed that they talk and not make any errors.  Practice reading twenty minutes or more every day.

This month we have our first Family Night!  Watch for more information and plan to join us on the 19th.  The fourth grade will be hosting their Pumpkin Pancake Dinner before the event.  Don't miss those delicious pancakes and pumpkin butter!   Sincerely Chandra Young, Principal Robles Elementary School

Dear Altar Valley Middle School Families,

Always being prepared is imperative for students to grasp new concepts and explain their thinking in mathematics. We have started Daily Math Skills (DMS) to help our students with some of their preparation. Ask your student where they are on their DMS, and I am sure a great conversation will ensue.

The current mathematics curriculum requires children to master skills across mathematical understandings as well. Math requires that our students not only understand the basic facts (DMS) and concepts of mathematics, but are literate in their ability to express this understanding as well. They are expected not only to use mathematical notation-numbers to explain thinking, but also use oral and written words to convey understanding of concepts and processes. So many times, children find unique ways to solve a problem that is mathematically sound. When this occurs it is a powerful force in their learning careers and should be celebrated.

I wanted to take some time and share with you some questions that have recently come up, along with some strategies to use with your children as they tackle math problems at home.

Is getting the correct answer still the most important part of the problem solving process?

Getting the correct answer is important, but being able to explain how the solution was derived and makes sense is equally important.

Can parents read math homework problems to their child, if the child is having difficulty reading them?

Although the goal is for students to develop independence in solving math problems, some students may need assistance reading the problems. A parent may read the problems to their child if he/she is having difficulty, just be sure to communicate this with your child’s teacher.

What should a parent do if the child tries to solve a problem in a different way than the parent learned it or in a way that doesn’t seem efficient?

If a child’s reasoning is logical, that is an important step in solving the problem. Let the child explain his/her thinking orally, and the parent should do the same. Determining different ways to solve a problem is strongly encouraged in your child’s classrooms.

What are some ways I can help my child with their homework?

• Have your child explain to you their thinking when solving a problem• Ask your child frequently about math problems solved at school• If your child is stuck on a problem ask questions that will help him/her to figure it out in their own way• Ask your child to re-state math problems and questions in their own words

I hope these suggestions will be helpful as you work with your child at home and thank you for all of your support.

Sincerely, Josh Peebles Principal Altar Valley Middle School
