On Saturday, December 5th, we are looking for adults to help the children and youth with baking cookies and bagging them. The Dirty Collar

Do you remember the old Television commercial from several years ago, where someone would exclaim, “You’ve got ring around the collar?” My heart went out to the housewife. She tried washing it out and tried scrubbing it out but still end-ed up with “Ring around the collar”! Of course, some well-dressed salesperson would magically appear from behind the laundry room door and offer a solution to her problem.

First of all, several things come to mind as I recall the commercial. 1. Why didn’t the woman jump through the roof? Having someone pop out from behind the door would scare

the pants off me! 2. Isn’t the special way the stain was whisked away only a temporary fix? After another long day at the

office, the ring would return. 3. Why was there someone at the office who spent their day walking around looking at the shirt collars of oth-

er employees? Didn’t they have anything else better to do? Like, their clothes are any cleaner.

I was reminded of this commercial when I read Zechariah 3:15. It seems that Joshua, the high priest of Israel, was standing before the angel of the Lord. Satan was there as well, pointing out Joshua’s sin. Tattling on Joshua, Satan says, “Um, God? Guess, um, guess what Joshua just did?” Satan reminds me of the person who has nothing else better to do than snoop around in other people’s lives looking for dirt! He calls out for all to hear, “Joshua’s got ring around the collar”!

Now, imagine how Joshua must have felt standing before the Lord wearing filthy rags. He’s just spent a whole week trying to get out the stain, but nothing seemed to work. He tried washing it out. He tried scrubbing it out. However, as verse four states, the Lord is the One who removes the stain. He removes the “ring around the collar”. The Lord removes Joshua’s dirty clothes and gives him a festival robe to wear.

Now it’s occurred to me that if Satan were able to find some dirt on Joshua, he would have a field day with me. “Greg’s got ring around the collar!” Satan would exclaim in that squeaky, irritating, tattletale voice of his. Okay. So I have ring around the collar. I’ve had it for years. I’ve tried to get rid of it, but nothing seems to works.

We can spend most of our energy trying to wash away our sins. We figure that if we can spend one week not making ourselves dirty, God would accept us. Okay, a whole week is kinda hard. How about 3 days? Maybe 1 day? We try to scrub out our sin. We try washing away our sin, but we still end up with “Sin around the collar.” We know it doesn’t work. Even the Lord knows it doesn’t work. In Jeremiah 2:22 He says, “Although you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your iniquity is before Me,” declares the Lord God. So then, how in the world can we possibly clean up ourselves so that we would be presentable to God?

That’s when Jesus pops out from behind the organ and offers a solution to our problem. He volunteers to whisk away our iniquity and make us pure before God. He removes our filthy, tattered rags and wraps us in a royal robe of righteousness. We cry out with Isaiah “I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:10). Only Jesus can get rid of, “Sin around the collar”!

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal.

Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies

to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a

hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you

have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its

own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

There are many complications that result from high blood sugar.

A person with pre-diabetes has a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough yet for a diagnosis of

diabetes. He or she is at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, including

heart disease and stroke.

What You Should Know

You are at increased risk for developing pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes if you:

Are 45 years of age or older.

Are overweight.

Have a parent with diabetes.

Have a sister or brother with diabetes.

Have a family background that is African-American, Hispanic/Latino,

American-Indian, Asian-American, or Pacific-Islander.

Had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes), or gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more.

Are physically active less than three times a week.

Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States currently have diabetes. However 1 in 4 doesn't know

they have it! The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the

United States is $245 billion. Additionally, 2 out of every 5 Americans are expected to develop type 2 diabetes

during their lifetime and 1 in 3 adults already have pre-diabetes.

What You Can Do Screening for diabetes is very important because millions of people have this disease and don't know it. You could be one of them. Everyone age 45 and older should have their blood sugar checked by a doctor at least once every 3 years. People who are at higher risk may need to be tested earlier and more often. Screening is easy with simple blood and urine tests that can have important benefits. If you find out you have the disease, you can take steps to treat it and prevent complications.

Research shows that modest weight loss and regular physical activity can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by up to 58% in people with pre-diabetes. Modest weight loss means 5% to 7% of body weight, which is 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person. Getting at least 150 minutes each week of physical activity, such as brisk walking, also is important.

If you are currently living with diabetes, please see your physician on a regular basis. Maintaining consistent tight control of your blood sugar is a key factor in having a healthy life. There are many resources available to you through the Wellspan Diabetes Education Program 292 St. Charles Way York, PA 17402 (717) 851-5341. The Ed-ucation Program can provide tips and education beyond what is available during your regular medical checkups.
