Pastor Tom’s MessageNovember! I Am Thankful for My Church Family!November is seen by many as a time of Thanksgiving and Family gathering. The colors of fall are all around us signaling a change in season and climate. But for some it is the beginning of the

holiday season which brings a sadness of loss of family or never having much of a family at all. The need to be connected runs deep within all our spirits.

At home I recently came across a picture of my father’s family. He came from a home with 10 brothers and sisters. So when we had a family picnic that included spouses, children and grandchildren it was quite a large gathering. Of my father’s brothers and sisters (my aunts and uncles) very few are left. While they will forever remain my aunts and uncles, still they are gone to the last family reunion.

As a pastor and having lost father, mother and other family members at an early age, I have always considered the congregation of the church as family, my family. As Jesus said pointing to his disciples, “Here is my mother and my brothers!” I would also in this group include certain long time, life time friends, colleagues and men-tors and teachers.

You may wonder by what measure I am using an understanding of what I mean by family. On the wall of my oce I have a very old (and cheap!) plaque with the following priceless words below that I think exemplies what is meant by family from single parent homes to congregations and everything in between.

God Made Us A Family! We need one anotherWe love one another

We forgive one anotherWe work togetherWe play together

We worship togetherTogether we use God’s WordTogether we grow in ChristTogether we love all peopleTogether we serve our God

Together we hope for HeavenThese are our hopes and idealsHelp us to attain them, O God

Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

Are You Thankful for Your “Family?” Do you see your connectedness at church as part of your “Family?” I hope so!

See YOU in Worship + Many Blessings + Pastor Tom +

Pastor DJ’s MessageThis month’s question is:

“Which Bible Translation is the Best?” I think it impossible to answer this question without its supplemental counterpart: best for what? Bibles are used for all sorts of

purposes and some serve certain purposes better than others.

We should always be aware that each translation is trying to accomplish something, and thus has its own bias. There is no perfect translation of a text for several reasons, but most signicantly that we do not have any of the original documents we are translating from and that there is no way to move from one language to the next without missing something. What we have are copies, and those from centuries after things would have likely been written. Regardless, there are several recommendations I have for specic purposes.

When it’s time for Bible study – I turn to my trusty NRSV.I should say at this point that the RSV technically does a better job with a word for word translation. However, the NRSV tries to bridge some cultural gaps that the RSV leaves intact(like how groups of men and women were addressed – culturally in New Testament times they would’ve been referred to as if they were all males). It’s my staple for this purpose though because of the scholars they gathered together to create the translation.

When it’s time for devotions I actually have two recommen-dations, one for accuracy and one for creativity. I think the NIV, with its emphasis on moving ideas and phrases from the Greek into English is good and certainly easier to read than the NRSV or other such translations, thus making it good for devotions which are similar to the traditional text. I also rather enjoy Eugene Peterson’s “The Message” although you will be hard pressed to recognize familiar passages as they have been signicantly altered from what you remem-ber. It does however recreate scripture as a story quite well and the new words will hit you in a new way.

Despite my lack of frequent use of the King James Version, I think it does serve a critical purpose. To me, it has an eloquence that does not occur elsewhere. It is antiquated, and that is its charm and use. It holds on to a style of English that has fallen out of use and in that sense preserves tradition. I wish when they made the New King James Version that they would’ve included more modern research and discoveries and preserved the language, but from what I can see they did not, and chose to dump the language and preserve the storyline of its construction. Those are my ocial recommendations, although you can easily nd yourself surrounded by dozens and dozens of translations that will achieve the most important thing: engaging God’s Word.

Next month’s question: a multi-parter involving angels!

Peace,Pastor DJ

November 13Due date for Lutheran Family Services Thanksgiving Baskets. Today, more than 20 million refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons are living with a very uncertain future. LFS Refugee Program is dedicated to helping these vulnerable individuals and families rebuild their lives by equipping them to achieve self-suciency within their rst year in the United States and fostering integration into their new communities.

Many of these refugee clients from African and South East Asian countries are unfamiliar with “traditional” American Thanksgiving meal. However, they would appreciate the opportunity to have a celebratory meal.

Here is the list of alternative groceries: Rice (jasmine or basmati), dried kidney or black beans, regular spaghetti noodles, cans of pasta sauce, corn meal, green or black tea bags, olive or canola oil (plastic bottle), salt, sugar, and a $25 gift card to H-Mart (a multi-cultural grocery store located at 2751 S Parker Rd, Aurora).

CLC is committed to lling 75 of these cultural Thanksgiving food bags. Please return the completed bags by November 13th. If you are able to donate an entire bag, a portion of a bag, or make a monetary donation, please sign the response sheet or respond to Dianne Yoss at [email protected]. NOTE: You do NOT have to go H-Mart if it is not convenient. Simply write a check to CLC or provide cash and place in an envelope marked for LFS Thanksgiving bags, and Dianne will get the gift cards. THANKS!

December 12Due date for Operation Pueblo De Dios. As you might know, our Senior High Youth Group visited Pueblo De Dios Lutheran Church in Compton, CA about ve years ago and will be returning once again next summer. The children of this underprivileged congregation made such an impact on our youth that we have partnered with them to make their Christmas special. We are asking for donations of “lled shoe boxes.” Begin by determining whether your gift will be for a girl or boy and label the box with the age and gender of the child. The rst ingredient to pack is prayer (1 John 5:14). You can ll the box with a variety of gifts such as: crafts, school supplies, toys, hygiene items, candy, etc. Please do not include used or damaged items, chocolate or food, war-related items, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items, or aerosol cans. Also, please enclose a check for $7, made payable to CLC, to help cover shipping and other costs that are associated with this. Place the envelope on top of the gift items in your shoe box, so that it is clearly visible. If you don’t have a shoe box, no worries, just drop o your items at the oce. For questions or more information, contact Dianne Yoss at [email protected]

December 4Due date for Adopt a family from Harrington for Christmas. It’s hard to believe that in just over a month,

we will be delivering Christmas gifts and baskets of food to Harrington Elementary School. There will be a tree in the Narthex starting November 14th with the names of families and gifts that they wish

to have. Please pick a family and then make a note on the list below the tree if you will be doing food, gifts, food/gifts, if you are buying the food, or if CLC will be buying it for you. Please bring

all completed baskets to CLC by Thursday, December 5th, and place them in the Fellowship Hall. If you would like the church to buy the food and gift card, so that Thrivent will match, please

place a check marked “Christmas Basket” and the family number in the oering plate to pay for the Christmas dinner. You will be responsible for purchasing one of the gifts listed for

each member of the family. We will be putting the CLC purchased food baskets together on Thursday, December 4th at 10:00 am. If you are interested in putting the food baskets

together or delivering the Christmas baskets on Saturday morning, please contact Dianne Yoss at [email protected]. We will be leaving CLC on Saturday, December 7th at 9:00AM

to deliver the baskets to Harrington.

A time to be thankful enjoying friends and family!

As the holiday season approaches, we are reminded that we need to take time to tell God how thankful we are for the amazing things he provides to us everyday! Our preschool is amazing and we are so thankful for our families, the congrega-tion, the teaching sta and all those who pray and support us everyday. Our Chapel theme this month is, “Jesus Feeds the 5000.” We will also enjoy our storyteller and music time with Ms. Linda. We will also host our annual Thanksgiving Feast for families the week before Thanksgiving just to give a taste of the wonderful holiday meal we share! We continue to count our blessings and wish everyone a healthy holiday season!
