GENTLE CAROUSEL THERAPY HORSES:A KIND OF MAGIC

The story of the Gentle Carousel Therapy Horses is one that you aresure to remember. The teams of tiny horses visit over 25,000 adultsand children each year inside hospitals, hospice programs and withchildren who have experienced traumatic events. From the schoolchildren and first responders of Sandy Hook Elementary School /Newtown, Connecticut, to the tornado survivors of Moore,Oklahoma, child trafficking victims in Washington D.C. and evenchildren living in orphanages in Greece, these tiny horses bring theirspecial love where it is needed most.

When did Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horsesstart?Gentle Carousel was started over 18 years ago. The firstGentle Carousel horses worked with young children whohad backgrounds of neglect or abuse. While a large horsecan be intimidating to a small child, the miniature horseswere easier for children to trust and befriend. There were many programs at the time where peoplecould go to horses for therapeutic riding. Gentle Carouselwas focused on taking horses to people who were notable to travel but would also benefit from an equineexperience. They began visiting seniors in assisted livingprograms and children in homeless shelters. They alsotravelled to children living in high crime neighbourhoodswith law enforcement community outreach programs andformed partnerships with foster care programs. One of

the founders of Gentle Carousel was a school principal so a reading program was created for librariesand schools that focused on young and at risk readers. As Gentle Carousel and the training program for the horses grew and developed over the years, thehorses began to visit children in hospital and hospice care. The skills the horses needed to be safearound the most fragile of patients are much different than those the first Gentle Carousel horseswere required to have.

How many therapy horses are in the program?Gentle Carousel has 36 trained therapy horses working right now with others still going through thetraining program. At this point we only train horses for our programs thatare born at Gentle Carousel so we can work with themat a very early age. It has made a big difference ineverything from house training to early exposure insidehospitals. Our teaching hospital allows our very youngfoals to visit with their therapy horse moms. We are alsoable to use sires and dams with a history of producingwonderful personalities for therapy workThe therapy horses have a one of a kind partnership withUF Health Shands Rehab Hospital in Gainesville, Florida,an acute hospital for patients who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, burns or major joint replacements. The therapy horseswork with occupational, speech and physical therapists

GENTLE CAROUSEL THERAPY HORSES:A KIND OF MAGIC

Page 7: November 2014

as part of the treatment team. They may inspire a patient in thetherapy gym to reach out an arm for the first time or help patientswho are learning how to use adaptive equipment like walkersand wheelchairs. They can even demonstrate rehab trainingstairs and ramps. The horses have worked with patients whohave stood or walked for the very first time since their accidentsor surgeries. Therapist have seen amazing progress andmotivation with patients teamed with the horses.Young horses train at the hospital. They learn to walk up anddown stairs, ride in elevators, walk on unusual floor surfaces, carefully move around hospital equipment and handleunexpected sounds like ambulances, alarms and hospitalhelicopters. The horses go through a two year basic programbut there is always more to learn.Every hospital is different and when the horses enter a newhospital they do not get a practice run. They must be comfortablewalking through the door and crowds of people and heading tothe elevator with their handler no matter what new sights andsounds they encounter on the way. Even a small miniature horseturning the wrong way or stepping in the wrong place couldcause damage with fragile patients and hospital equipment.

Who is the best know therapy horse at Gentle CarouselMiniature Therapy Horses? All of the horses from Gentle Carousel are heroes in their ownway but therapy horse Magic is the best known little hero. Shehas a very special relationship with children in hospital care. Onelocal girl who had a heart transplant and then leukaemia saidMagic made her face hurt from smiling so much. A boy losinghis sight because of a brain tumour held Magic close to his faceso he could always remember what she looked like. "It is likeshe can see inside my soul," he told his mother. A little boy witha life ending illness who had been in the hospital most of his liferequested a visit from Magic. He laughed and hugged her andwas so excited. After the visit his mother said, "We have neverhad a happy day, and now we will always have a happy day."Magic always seems to find the person in the room who needsher the most. At a camp for children with cancer, Magic wantedto spend time with a young boy sitting by himself. She put herface against his face and they both closed their eyes and didn'tmove for a long time. After their visit, a nurse told Magic's trainerthat the boy had just found out his cancer had returned. Magic

was with a patient who woke from a coma and in the bedroom of a man who passed away with hishand resting on her head. He told his family earlier that day how much he missed his childhood pony.In one nursing home a woman who had not left her room in six months was waiting in the lobby earlyin the morning when she heard Magic was coming. She had an old black and white photo in her lapof herself as a child sitting on a pony. She was afraid she would be missed when Magic visited fromroom to room, and wanted everyone to know that she loved horses and horses loved her.One day a newspaper reporter was taking photos of therapy horses Magic at an assisted livingprogram when Magic walked over and put her head in the lap of a resident. The woman, who hadnot spoken since she arrived at the facility more than three years earlier, began talking to Magic ."Isn'tshe beautiful," were her first words. "It's a horse!". The activities director, was so surprised to hearthe woman speak that she began to cry. She told the resident that she loved her. "I love you too,"was the answered. It was her first full sentence to another person. The woman continued to talk tostaff and family members long after Magic's visit.Magic has a tuxedo that she wears on special occasions. The tuxedo was first made for Magic towear to a party for a five year old girl in hospice care. The little girl wanted to have a tea party withthe therapy horses. The horses arrived in tuxedos and her friends and cousins all came in princessdress. It was a wonderful party and a very happy day for everyone. Making memories is the mostimportant work for a therapy horse.Therapy horse Magic has been named:One of History's 10 Most Courageous Animals - TIME MagazineMost Heroic Pet In America - AARPA Reader's Digest / Americantowns Power of One HeroOne of the 10 Most Heroic Animals of 2010 -Newsweek /The Daily Beast2014 winner of the prestigious E.T.YorkDistinguished Service AwardOne of Seven Most Notable Animal Heroes inthe World - UK's The Daily Mirror 2014Therapy horses Magic and travel buddyHamlet are 2014 Breyer Portrait ModelHorses.Featured in the book 125 True Stories ofAmazing Pets - National Geographic Kids 2014

Magic now has her own book, The Power ofMagic by DT Publishing 2014.Therapy horse Magic and a team of her equinefriends from Gentle Carousel MiniatureTherapy Horses travelled from Florida toNewtown, CT after the tragedy at Sandy Hook

Elementary School. A specialrequest for the tiny horses wasmade by the Newtown community. The horses travelling with Magicwere selected for their experienceworking inside schools."For a town that needs a hero, ahero is on the way." - CNNThe Newtown community set upthe daily schedule for the therapyhorses. In addition to working withchildren in schools, making privatevisits and spending time with firstresponders, Magic was asked tovisit children at Newtown's library.Gentle Carousel was told that therewould be just two or three childrenbecause the library had been veryquiet since the events at SandyHook. Over 600 people came tosee the little horse."... Newtown's Booth Library, hosted a children's program withthe horses and said the excitementsurrounding the event seemed likethe beginning of a return tonormalcy... like a step forward afterweeks of grieving." - USA TODAYStudents and families from Sandy

Hook Elementary School had their own private time with Magic and friends. Magic met hundreds ofsurvivors, siblings and parents who patiently waited in line for some equine love. It took almost fourhours to meet everyone. Gentle Carousel planned to stay for one week but was asked to stay anadditional week and have returned several times."Your compassion is a great reflection on the State of Florida."- Rick Scott, Governor of Florida"On behalf of the State of Connecticut, I want to thank you for your willingness to give your time andexpertise in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School." - Dannel P. Malloy, Governorof Connecticut

What's an 'average' Gentle Carousel day look like?We never have an average day because the horses are always asked to do something new ...butindividual therapy horses work no more than two days a week. They live very natural lives and spenda lot of time just being horses in little herds. You never know what situations are going to happen. Gentle Carousel was asked to help the schoolchildren and first responders of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, the tornadosurvivors of Moore, OK and child trafficking victims in Washington D.C. They also visit children'shospitals across the country. Six therapy horses trained in Florida now work with children living insideorphanages and institutions as part of the Gentle Carousel program in Athens, Greece. They arethe first animals of any kind allowed inside hospitals in that country.

Gentle Carousel's award winning literacyprogram Reading Is Magic brings realhorses inside schools, at risk youthprograms and libraries to inspire youngreaders and "bring books to life".When the horses travel the are ofteninvited to unusual places. Therapy horseMagic was the first horse ever invitedinside the "Ewing Mansion" at SouthforkRanch (Dallas) during a hospital tour ofTexas. She was also the first horse everinvited inside Zoo Atlanta and was ableto visit the twin baby pandas.

How are operations funded?Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity. TICKET TO RIO

Hello!Since I last wrote the Eventing season has finished andwe are approaching Winter fast. This means there aresome changes in routine for me and my horses, theyare still trained 6 days a week but in lighter work suchas hacks and schooling in lessons. It is more to keepthem fit than push performance and I believe that aftera busy season the horses need time out to relax. At my yard I also have some show jumpers and in theWinter I finally have time to take them to somecompetitions, just this month we attended our firstwinter competition jumping 1.30cm and 1.35. We tryto attend the competitions with them each week to buildtheir profile as they are also for sale, many competitionshere in Holland are held on a Thursday and Fridaywhich still gives me the weekend to try to relax – notthat I get to relax very often!I rode at Military Boekelo in the Dutch Championships3* CCI (long), after I had completed a terrific clearround I found out the jury had given me 25 penaltypoints for breaking a safety pin. So we took to socialmedia because I knew someone, somewhere must havefilmed me at the jump. Just one hour later I had thevideo evidence and the jury revised their decision andcancelled the penalty points because they could see itwas not unsafe. Well done social media!! I was sohappy with Bayro doing so well in his first CCI 3* andI am proud to have such a horse. This is the horse I willmake my way to Rio 2016. I finished 2nd in the Dutch

Championship at Boekelo and I was part of the Dutchteam who came 3rd in the Nations Cup which waswonderful!I recently had a student riding in the 1* Z Class DutchChampionships at Barchem in Holland, she wantedto compete two horses but was only able to ride oneso she asked me could I ride the other? 2 days beforethe completion I agreed and became first in the DutchChampionship, which was fun and of course anachievement. As for next year and the next season… I am lookingahead to new opportunities and also doing more formy sponsors by attending events and being anambassador of the great brands I work with. A newventure i am doing it indoor Cross Country trainingat my stables. We are very lucky to have large indoorriding facilities and there are many indoor XCcompetitions held here in Holland so I believe we areamongst the first to offer this kind of training.Just last weekend I was riding into an oxer and hada slight miscommunication with my horse and hit myhead off the neck of my horse. I definitely saw starsfor a few moments but I continued to ride the nextjumps as I think after a tricky jump you must keepgoing to keep the horses confidence. So really it isalways like that, look ahead to the next jump, the nexthurdle… try not to miss a stride and if you do, youmake the next one count!

Page 13: November 2014

“Members of the nutrition team often advise usingthis type of net to slow down the rate of forage intakeand therefore improve gut health,” said Dengie sen-ior nutritionist Katie Williams, “but the findings sug-gest that horses are too clever by half and suss outhow to eat just as quickly after just 10 minutes ofusing a small-holed net!”Lily Crockett conducted a 28-day trial between No-vember and December 2013 using seven horsesfrom Writtle College, near Chelmsford, Essex. Theywere given hay nets of different designs filled withhay. Each was weighed before the trial and at 10-minute intervals over a 30-minute period. There was no significant difference in the volume ofconsumption when comparing a large-holed net(1,357g), small-holed net (1,014g), Elim-a-Net(886g) and double-meshed net (843g).Similarly, the actual rate of intake was not radicallydifferent – the large-holed net was 45g/min, small-holed 34g/min, Elim-a-Net 30g/min and double

meshed 28g/min. However, there was a significantdifference during the first 10 minutes between thelarge-holed net and Elim-a-Net, at 53g/min and29g/min respectively.Dengie believes the report’s assertion that hay netsappear to cause frustration in horses reflects a studyinvolving a triple-layered net quoted at the 2014European Workshop on Equine Nutrition. It suggest-ed that creating multiple feeding stations around thestable was more effective at slowing down horses’intake.Katie Williams said: “That and Lily’s study illustratethat short-chopped fibre feeds such as those inDengie’s Hi-Fi range given as a bucket feed areperfect for feeding alongside hay to create a numberof feed points, slowing down intake and encouragingnatural feeding behaviour. Giving a horse access tolow-starch, low-sugar fibre feeds on an ad-lib basisis a great way to improve gut health and maintaingeneral wellbeing.”

AKHAL TEKE CHMPIONSHIPS

The European Akhal Teke Championship was held in late September, inGut Ising, Bavaria. Near lake Chiemsee it showed more than 50 AkhalTekes from all over Europe.

Research by a Writtle College student showing that small-holed hay nets do little to prolong feedingtimes and even cause frustration in some horses has made Dengie Horse Feeds question their ef-fectiveness.

The championship isheld every 3 year in GutIsing and offers theopportunity to breedersand owners to displaytheir horses. The eventis categorised invarious events todemonstrate theversatility of the breed. The event is specificallyfor the showing ofAkhal Tekes, injumping, dressage, trailriding, show, circus

tricks, costumed showsand more. This year we had thechance to see dressagesuperstar Makka Shaelunder his rider VitalyAndrukovitch. MakkaShael is bred by LeonidBabaev from Russia. The next big event tosee and experienceAkhal Tekes will be inBelgium next year. Thedate is to be confirmedin the coming months.

Change yourthoughtsand you

change howyou feel.Whether you’re suffering from

‘show nerves’ or are afraid to ride atall, you may have been told by yourfriends, your coach, or even said toyourself – “It’s just in your head”. It’strue that fear exists in our brains. There’s a perfectly natural andinstinctive program that startsautomatically when our brains believewe are in danger.  It’s meant to keepus safe and prevent us from doingthings that could cause us physicalharm.  The problem is that when itinterferes with your enjoyment ofriding or showing, then fear is nolonger your friend.

Your brain can’t tell the differencebetween a real or an imagineddanger.  So, when we ‘think’ we mightbe hurt in some way, that fear alarm istriggered.  The perceived ‘hurt’ mightbe potential physical injury oremotional (i.e. embarrassment, judgment, etc.)

The good news is that you can takecontrol and manage that fear –whether it’s a mild feeling of stress, astronger anxiety or an out rightshaking in your boots fear.

You solve any problem at the root ofit.  And, the root of the fear is in yourhead – your thoughts.  When fear

controls your thoughts, you go intothat negative spiral of the ‘what if’s’. You ‘think’ that whatever you areabout to do is not going to end well. Riding becomes miserable instead offun.

The good news is that you caninfluence your thoughts to build yourconfidence.  To control those shownerves. To have fun riding your horse.

CONFIDENT HORSEMANSHIPWITH ANNE GAGE

Change your thoughts andyou change how you feel.

Simple advice.  But most people struggle with it.  Takethese 3 steps to do it successfully.

Step #1 – Be aware of what you are thinking andsaying.  You have about 50,000 thoughts every day!  Andyou’re unaware of most of them.   As you go through yourday, notice how often you use dis-empowering, negativephrases.

Perhaps some of these phrases sound familiar.

1. “I don’t know what to do!”

2.  “I’m stuck.”

3. “This won’t work.”

4. “This is too much for me.”

5. “I’ll never get this.”

Notice the emotions you have when you are talking toyourself and to others.

Step #2 – Write down your thoughts.    Keep a journal(on paper or digitally) where you record your negativethoughts.  Write them down as soon as they happen (oras soon afterwards as you can) so that you can recordthem as accurately as possible.    Note what was goingthrough your mind and what you were doing at thatmoment.   Also notice the emotions you were feeling. What came first, the thought or the feeling?

You may find writing down negative thoughts and feelingsis difficult.  You may prefer not to face them, feel afraid oreven think they are stupid.  But, ignoring the negativethoughts and feelings won’t make them disappear – it justmakes them stronger.  You’ll deal with them in the nextstep.

Step #3 – Flip those negative thoughts on their heads.Once you’ve recorded and become aware of your mostcommon negative thoughts then you can re-write theminto empowering phrases that build your confidence.   Bychanging a negative to a positive statement or question,

you give your sub-conscious mind a problem to solve.  Itloves solving problems.  So, it will go to work figuring outan answer.  You will move forward.  It will work. You willbe able to handle it.  And you will get it.

Here are 5 more examples of confidence-breakingphrases and their confidence building alternatives:

“I’m afraid my horse will spook”  becomes “I admitthat I have a fear my horse will spook. What help can I getto work through this?”

“I hope I don’t fall apart in the show”  becomes “I haveprepared myself and my horse well for this show.  We willdo our best.”

“I can’t do what my coach wants me todo” becomes “There’s something I’m not getting yet. Ican ask for more help and I can practice more. I know Iwill get it eventually.”

“I’ll never get these transitions right” becomes “We’veonly been working on these movements for a short time.It takes time to get them consistently.”

“I can’t afford riding lessons ortraining” becomes “This is something that’s reallyimportant to me.  I need xx dollars.  I just need to figureout a way to make that extra money.”

Taking these 3 steps may seem difficult at first.  But themore often you do it, the more natural it becomes. Practice changing your thoughts to evoke positiveemotions and your confidence will grow.

In addition to our locations in the United States,my look-a-like sister Ivi and five therapy horsestrained in the US now live at Gentle CarouselGreece near Athens. Theyalso host BreyerFest, the world's largest modelhorse collector and equine festival each year atthe Kentucky Horse Park. I was a special specialguest at BreyerFest this year, the 25th SilverJubilee. More than 10,000 people attended andI think Hamlet and I met each one!Breyer has strong ties to the real horse worldand say they add "the latest and greatest stars"to their model line each year. The process from idea to models arriving instores took almost a year. I started working withthe Breyer artists by sending them photos. Theartists needed to see each side of all fourhooves and legs, my eyes, face markings andmy entire body from the front, sides and back.Breyer model horses begin as artist's sculpturesand are then handcrafted and hand-painted with

About 20 differentartisans handle each individual Breyer modelfrom start to finish, so no two Breyer models areever exactly alike.I was also the first horse ever invited to tour thefamous Breyer factory and meet the artistworking on my original model. I was travelinghome from Yale-New Haven Children's hospitaland stopped to visit a child in New Jersey, thestate where the Breyer factory (ReevesInternational, Inc.) is located.I walked through the factory, met the staff andsaw the very first Hamlet and Magic models. Ieven checked out the CEO's office and the hugestuffed toy animals in the hallways. When Iposed for photos with the Breyer team, they allhad to promise not to show anyone the photosuntil after the official announcement about the

ALOERIDE

TRIED AND TESTED

This month In the Stirrups trusted reviewer has been putting Aloeride to the test. Reduced grooming

time, long periods of time spent with rugs on, fields full of mud and feet trying to adapt to wet to

dry conditions on a daily basis can all have a detrimental effect over time, but alongside daily

grooming and good hygiene practices, Aloeride can help maintain healthy skin and hooves and

encourage a shiny coat from the inside out. It is a palatable natural, certified organic aloe-vera

supplement, which not only helps to promote healthy skin, condition hooves, encourage great coat

shine and glossy locks, but also supports the immune system as well –another key factor to consider

over the winter months. Each box of Aloeride contains 30 sachets (30 days worth) equaling over 12

litres of aloe vera juice and its great to know that its also been tested by an accredited Newmarket

laboratory and does not contain any synthetic compounds. RRP £55.20 (1 x months supply) available

at www.aloeride.co.uk

Tyne is In the Stirrups trusted reviewer. As well asbeing a qualified Equine Veterinary Nurse, she is a keenhorsewoman. She owns an 18yr old Connemara Marecalled Summer who still keeps Tyne on her toes. Whennot riding or covered in hay, Tyne enjoys walking andreading - usually still covered in horse hair.

ALOERIDE

TRIED AND TESTED

I have used aloe vera based gels in the past toaid the healing of fly bites and other minorskin complaints on the horses and myself so Iwas aware of some of the properties itcontains but I must admit I was quiteskeptical about feeding it!

I have a veteran mare whos at times quite stiffand unfortunately I had to take out for work forthe winter just after I'd given her a full clip(typical!) Being a native type her coat usuallygrows back rough and wirey but after 4 weeksof feeding aloeride her coat has grown backbeautifully soft and shiny, she looks fantastic!

She has had days since the weathers been colderthat she's looked quite uncomfortable but sincebeing on the supplement she's walking muchmore happily and seems to have her old sparkback, I've even witnessed her having a trotaround the field with her friends! Something shehadn't done in a long while. Thanks to thealoeride I've been able to minimise herpainkillers too!Aloeride also has other health benefits such asaiding digestion and genral wellbeing so inconclusion it's a fabulous supplement for anyhorse at any time of year. The only con is it quite pricey but still absolutelyworth it!

JAY TIGER HALIM

Hey Cubs! How have you all been?

The last time I left you I waspreparing to attend the Horse of theYear Show for the very first time.Well I did and it was amazing, everymoment. The atmosphere wascharged and I made it to the lastround in the puissance withGoodmans Acobado which was trulywonderful and we had an incredibletime! My Goddaughter came towatch which really pleased me, itwas great to see her although it is ashame I don’t have a lot of time whenattending shows like HOYS. I came

second the following day in theGrade C Final with Abrisco whichwas so pleasing. There was a realteam feeling because his owners andoriginal groom (who worked withhim when he was younger) came tosee us ride, his owners are involvedin Showing so it was a something abit different seeing us jump. I reallywas over the moon with my first timeat the Horse of the Year show and soproud of the horses. I am nowactively looking into arranging asyndicate for Abrisco as I want tokeep the ride and take him far in thefuture.

After HOYS my profile seemed toexplode into the public eye, I havesince had to set up a Facebook Fanpage after I reached the maximumamount of friends on my privateprofile.

You can come over and say hi atwww.facebook.com/jaytigerhalimrider, I love to meet and interact withmy fans so the more the merrier! This month also saw me celebratemy birthday, I had a lovely meal withfriends in my local town ofCirencester. I decided after the mealI wanted a couple of additional

drinks and ended up in the student bar which I left at3am, feeling pretty old compared to everyone inHalloween costumes. Not great for the ego!A couple of the horses at the yard have been a little offcolour but the weather changes have been so erratic itisn’t surprising. This month i have brought in some ofmy 3yr olds that I produced to sell, who are comingalong very well as well as it being weaning time for myyoungest horses. All of my home bred horses haveCandy as a prefix to their name and we have just weanedCandy Mercury (Freddie) and Candy Wang (Vera) whoare in a stable together. They are doing so well andhaven’t called for their mothers once which is sweet.

I am trying to be efficient with my time, keepingbalanced and on top of the numerous tasks each day. Wehave had 2 new horses join the yard with their rider whohas already enjoyed a successful competition since beingbased at my stables.Last weekend I did a demo on Saturday and Sunday atYour Horse Live, which was a new experience as it was

my first live demo. I am a Your Horse Live TrainingAcademy Coach along with Laura Tomlinson. Lauraunfortunately couldn’t attend this year but I thoughtit would be fun. I also had a signing at Bits andBridles, who stock my sponsors Uvex, which wasnerve wracking. I did contemplate offering free icecream to encourage people to come but I was surprisedat the response I got! It was great! On Saturday I did my demo, signing and an interviewfor Your Horse Live and then drove to Addington asI had 2 horses in the Grand Prix in the evening. Ithought perhaps they needed a bigger class but theyreally gave me an unexpected confidence boost withGoodman’s For Fun winning the class. My secondride Bart had an unlucky 4 faults but I am really overthe moon with him. Sunday it was back to Stoneleighfor a slightly less busy day, I felt very professionalreturning on the second day after clinching a GrandPrix the night before. I have really had some fantasticfeedback on my time at Your Horse Live, as well asmeeting some great people. As much as I love beingan inspiration I have yet to shake the feeling that I amnot quite worthy of their admiration. It is alwayshumbling to me when I meet such amazing peoplewho follow and look up to me, I reminds me that mysuccess is not just mine, it is theirs too for supportingand believing in me! All in all Your Horse Live wasamazing, it was great to catch up with NAF andAlbion who already support me with their greatproducts and I can’t wait until next year.Do head over to my Facebook page and say hi orfollow me on Twitter @jaytigerhalim. KLIMKE WINS HER FIRST CCI4* IN PAU

With the 2013/2014 victory goingto William Foxx-Pitt, he lookedset to be a strong force in thisyears competition with his twoentries who have both won CCI4*in the past. There were 35 entriesfrom 10 nations and in thisnumber there were a number ofcombinations to watch. NewZealander Jonelle Price, fourth atthe WEG earlier this year, lookedto make her mark in Pau with thenine year old mare FaerieDianimo. Kentucky 2013 runnerups Lauren Kieffer (USA) enteredwith her ride Veronica and JockPaget (NZL) competed onAndrew Nicholsons former rideShady Grey.Britain had a strong contingentwith Louise Harwood and FrancisWhittington who have bothenjoyed successful seasons thisyear, plus Pippa Funnell ridingRedesigned, the stunningchestnut that she was unluckilyunseated from at Badminton,Nicola Wilson who rode so wellacross country at the WEG,competiting in Pau on One TwoMany who was a CCI4* first timer.Day one of Dressage saw acharged atmosphere with onlyGermany’s Ingrid Klimke, ridingthe 10-year-old Horseware HaleBob, and William Fox-Pitt (GBR),with the 14-year-old ParklaneHawk, were the only two ridersto score below 40 penalties andthey are now tying for the leadat this stage on 39.3 penaltiesapiece. Klimke, although win-ning numerous team gold med-

als for Germanyhad yet to wina CCI4*. “My horse, ‘Bobby’,has proved he can do the CCI4*distance when he completedLuhmuhlen this year,” she said.“He is sharp and clever and I’mlooking forward to riding himacross country.” Dressage end-ed with Pau 2010 winner An-dreas Dibowski (GER) sat 1.4penaltie points behind the jointleaders.

The Cross Country phase beganthe next day with Ireland’sJoesph Murphy first onto thecourse. Course Designer PierreMichelet’s (FRA) twisting, tech-nical course demanded an obe-dient, flexible horse andMurphy became the only riderto complete with two horses."Both my horses are very goodjumpers and had great experi-ences today, but they are verydifferent,” said an elated Mur-phy.Both William Fox-Pitt (GBR)and Pippa Funnell (GBR) pulledup their first rides. Fox-Pitt de-cided to retire Seacookie atfence 6, feeling that the groundwas too firm for the 15-year-old, and Funnell and MirageD’Elle fell foul of the sharplyangled corner at fence 4. Thisnotoriously difficult obstacle, where the direct route is ap-proached “blind” after a tree, also claimed New Zealand’sJock Paget (Shady Grey) andBritain’s Francis Whittington(West Side) as victims. Fox-Pitt’s day because he later withdrew his joint Dres-sage leader, Parklane Hawk, and matters worsened forFunnell when she was unseated from her second ride,Redesigned, when the long-striding chestnut clipped thesecond arrowhead at fence 20. Ingrid Klimke rode awonderfully committed round and was cheered to thefinish by the large crowd and finished just two secondsover time. That left the German with a fence in hand forthe Jumping phase over Irelands Joseph Murphy andElectric Cruise, who were the only combination toachieve the optimum time of 12 minutes 2 seconds.

The Jumping course at Pau is always challenging, and thisyear was no exception, but the influence of the variableCross Country times meant that scores were spread outand so riders had some leeway for error. When, to greatdisappointment, Joseph Murphy’s (IRL) Electric Cruisewas eliminated at the final Horse Inspection, AndreasDibowski (GER) and FRH Butts Avedon moved up into therunner-up spot. Their two fences down did not affecttheir placing, and meant that Ingrid Klimke (GER) was

handed a three-fence advantage, but the spring-heeledHorseware Hale Bob only hit one rail, on the triple oxer.Murphy had some compensation with fifth place, de-spite three rails down, on a keen-looking SportsfieldOthello. Erin Sylvester (USA) made the long journeyacross the Atlantic worthwhile with sixth place on NoBoundaries and Canada’s Kathryn Robinson secured herfirst CCI4* completion in style with seventh place on LetIt Bee. Nicola Wilson finished eighth and best of theBritish contingent on One Two Many, a good round justmarred by the pair’s misjudgement coming into the dou-ble, when they had both parts down.

Klimke has won six team gold medals at Olympic, Worldand European level, and now she looks to have found thecomplete event horse in Horseware Hale Bob, a 10-year-old Oldenburger by Helikon and her beaming smile saidit all. “This was a pure show jumping course and youneeded an adjustable horse for the varying distances, which wasn’t easy the day after a 12-minute Cross Coun-try course,” said Klimke. “Often the Jumping phase is mybiggest fear, but this time I had no worries because Iknew my horse is a great jumper.”Ingrid was clearlythrilled with her first CCI4* win: “Let’s drink to that!” shesaid. “I have loved my visit to Pau – it’s a wonderful eventwith a wonderful crowd.”

MEET IN THE STIRRUPS NEW TEAM MEMBER

SHANE BROWN

There are veryfew people inthis world whoknow whatthey want todo with theirlives, let aloneget theopportunity tolive it out. Ihappen to beblessed enoughto be one ofthem. I havealways knownthat horses andranch life wasthe path I mostdesired, even

from an early age, and I made pursuing thatend my goal. My name is Shane Brown; I live inElbert, CO, USA on our horse ranch and ridingfacility with my wife Stacey, daughter Quincyand son Levi.

I began my lifestyle choices early with a motherand father that worked in the ranching industryin Colorado and Nebraska. I grew up riding, roping, working cattle and tagging alonganywhere I was allowed to go as soon as Icould sit in a saddle by myself. The desire to behorseback never left me. Through my youth andteen years I was involved in 4H Agriculturalprograms, riding and showing horses, raisingcattle and rabbits and eventually landing a job

with a well known paint and quarter horse ranchnear my home. I did everything from fixingfence to cleaning stalls, but the aspect oftraining was my main interest. I worked my wayinto the assistant trainer position under TroyHeikes at Pine Run Ranch and the rest, as theysay, is history.

I started Shane Brown Performance Horses in1992, moving to my own facility in 2005, andhave trained and ridden AQHA World ShowFinalists and NRHA Futurity and Derby Finalistsin addition to participating in NRCHA events. Ihave earned success as a nationally rankedtrainer and coach and enjoy competing yearround in our exciting sport.

I have a desire to see reining grow and improveworld-wide. In order to do that, I participate onmultiple levels of both the National ReiningHorse Association and my regional affiliate,Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association. I amcurrently the NRHA Professionals Chairman atNRHA and a director on the NRHA Board inaddition to the board of RMRHA after twoconsecutive two-year terms as President.

I hope to explore not only the basic informationof what makes a reining horse and rider workwell together, but also tap into the major eventsassociated with our sport around the UnitedStates. I am excited about where our industry isheaded and I look forward to sharing thatexcitement with you.

Great Britain’s Michael Whitaker won the Rikstoto Grand Prix in Oslo riding his 2013European Championships gold medal winner, the 12 year old chestnut gelding VikingV.The 24 strong jump off field wasn’t able to touch a double clear posted by Jur Vrieling of The Netherlandswho seemed likey to have an unbeatable time. Rider after rider failed to knock his lead until Whitaker, fromNottinghamshire, managed a quiet and composed round to beat Vrieling’s time by 2/100’s of a second.Talking afterwards Michael commented “That was a fast class. You couldn’t just canter round, you had tohave a plan. I was fortunate that I got a good hit on the first fence and everything went right after that.Sometimes it happens your way, sometimes it doesn’t – but today it went exactly the way I wanted it”.The jumping was extremely high paced with just over a second separating the top six placings at the end ofcompetition. The seven fence course was designed by Uliano Vezzani saw almost half of competitiorsqualify for the jump off which resulted in riders taking risks to ensure the fast time needed to place high inthe long line up.

DAISY JACKSONThis month has been about training and preparingfor some parties! Tango and I have been workinghard and I am so pleased with his development. Ourbusy month included taking Tango to HartpuryCollege for training as part of my AASE (AdvancedApprenticeship in Sporting Excellence); getting alovely big parcel from my sponsor at BespokeBandage who has designed a beautiful set for 4 yearold Tänzer; officially becoming 18 and getting tocelebrate with my friends and family and enjoyingthe most amazing birthday cake – which very nearlydidn’t happen!Unbeknown to me Mum had organised for KatieOakeley to make a beautiful cake for my 18th. Katie hadarranged that Mum would pick it up on the Friday (mybirthday was the Sunday). Several frantic phone callsand texts went back and forth between Mum and Katieabout an hour before it was due to be picked up asdisaster had struck! Katie had popped out and when shehad returned, found her naughty terriers had managedto reach it and had eaten half of it! After a few tears andthen hysterical laughter from both of them, Katie cameup with a plan to quickly re-make the cake and deliverit Saturday afternoon! How amazing that Katie managedto make another cake in time for my birthday and howlucky she had all the ingredients! I am sure it was verystressful for Katie and Mum but it all turned out ok andI thought the story was hilarious! Here is a photo of the cake – post terriers! It featuresTango, Tänzer, my pony Dash who is now 20 years oldand a mystery horse who I am hoping to be able to tellyou all about soon! It was such a lovely surprise whenI saw it and we are varnishing the horses so I can keep

t h e mf o r e v e r !The rest ofthe cake islong goneand wasdelicious!It has to besaid, thiswas theb e s tHalloweenever. Nos c a r ynights out

and not as i n g l ecostume insight butinstead awonderfultrip toH a r t p u r ya n dT a n g o ’ sdebut ridein the bigi n d o o rinternational arenaand itcouldn’t havegone better. Not only was Fürst Larkshill very mature about it all healso performed wonderfully in my lesson with NickBurton, my mentor and coach for my AASE. I am nowvery close to completing my course and I was given theheads up from Nick about entering some competitions, which of course I did the same day! It was also great tocatch up with friends on the course and the whole visitwas great fun.

I have also enjoyed having Olivia Oakeley coming toour yard more regularly. We have had some superlessons and it is good to have feedback from our bestInternational Young Rider who has trained and is nowcompeting her horse, Donna Summer, at Grand Prix.Olivia has seen us from the start so appreciates what wehave achieved so far and is always so positive andencouraging. I plan to have more lessons with Olivia inthe future as she really ‘gets’ Tango and seems to alwayssee positives in everything but at the same time is honestabout our capabilities. That definitely makes for a goodtrainer in my book and I am looking forwards to lessonswith her over the winter.

Larkshill Tänzer, our 4 year old Benetton Dream xDonawaulzer is also coming along very well and isimproving all the time. He is developing good form inhis early training and we had a lot of fun showing offhis brand new Bespoke Bandages set and modelling forthe camera! Our arena is surrounded by our turn outpaddocks which has proven to be excellent education

for our young horses who have had to learn to workthroughout any distractions. Sometimes it isn’t for thefaint hearted especially if you get several horses whodecide to make your training session more interesting! However, during training, they do soon learn to stayfocussed which is so helpful when they are out atcompetitions and some would say is character buildingfor both horse and rider!

I have been sad to read about several accidents withfireworks in the media. Although our yard is situatedclose to where there are displays and private fireworksI am fortunate that out of the 8 horses we have at home, none are the least bit bothered by them. We also have2 dogs, one that isn’t at all worried by them and theother (a gun dog coincidentally) really hates them. Iguess that we are just very lucky because I have readcountless incidents of horses having accidents instables through stress, colicking and even one horsethat suffered burns due to a firework starting a fire inthe stables. Although I love to watch fireworks, thewelfare of animals (and of course people) has to comefirst and I believe that they should be limited toorganised displays and not be sold to the general publicwithout some sort of licence being issued to ensuresafety guidelines are in place. I have signed thegovernment petition which is available to sign up untilMarch 2015. If any of you share my feelings on thisand would like to sign, here is a link to the epetition:http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/71570

RDA PONY SCOOPS BETA TITLE

Bobbysocks is a once-in-a-lifetime pony –and that’s official! This gentle-naturedWelsh bay gelding, hero to hundreds ofchildren, has been crowned winner of theBETA Year of the Horse competition.

The award, launched by the British Equestrian

Trade Association as part of the 2014 Chinese Year

of the Horse celebrations, invited entries from

everyone with a favourite horse – from cuddly

family pony to an equine superstar that had inspired

them. As nominations rolled in, finding that elusive

horse or pony proved an incredibly difficult task,

but in the end there could only be one winner – and

Bobbysocks, all 12.2hh of him, stood out from the

rest. This 26-year-old golden oldie with three

striking white socks has enjoyed a lifetime of

helping others. In his younger days, he hunted and

competed at both regional and national level but,

on retiring from competition, he has taught

countless children with disabilities to ride as an

RDA volunteer pony. Bobbysocks, who was

nominated by RDA volunteer Susan Tomkins, lives

with Dawn Whitmore-Kirby, who runs the Meadow

School of Riding, in Woodhouse Eaves, near

Loughborough, Leicestershire. They are both

thrilled that this “calm, well-behaved and patient”

pony has won and have chosen a specially

commissioned portrait of Bobbysocks as the prize.

“He has spent his life helping other and always

doing what was asked of him,” said Dawn. “He has

won so many things but never had a trophy of his

own – until now. We are thrilled that he will have

his own portrait, which we shall put up in the new

Portakabin classroom we are building.

RDA PONY SCOOPS BETA TITLE

“Bobbysocks really deserves this award – he is

such a character and ever so cheeky. If ever

there is any trouble in the field, it’s never down

to him, but he’s always there – he’s our Just

William. Before he came to us, he was a bit of a

jumping machine, lively and full of energy, and

he can still be like that if a regular rider is on him.

Put a disabled kid on him, though, and he slows

down and plods around and just seems to know

that he needs to take care of them.” Bobbysocks

is going into partial retirement this autumn after

years of giving happiness to the many children

that rode him. “He will work when he wants to,”

added Dawn, “and, when he wants to stay in the

field, he can.” BETA executive director Claire

Williams said that the judging panel had a really

tough job in choosing the winner: “It was not

easy, but Bobbysocks seems to have made such

a big difference to a number of peoples’ lives

that he was the natural choice,” she said. “We

wish him the very best and hope he enjoys a

well-deserved retirement.”

The BETA Year of the Horse competition was launched

at the beginning of the year, with nominations closing on

29 August. Nominations were made online at the BETA

website, www.beta-uk.org, or via forms available from

participating tack shops.

Olympic champion SteveGuerdat led a Swiss victorygallop at the second leg of theLongines FEI World Cup™Jumping 2014/2015 WesternEuropean League in Helsinki,Finland.Held in a new venue it proved achallenge for both parts of thecombinations competitng due torestricted space. 32 year oldGuerdat and the gelding Nino desBuissonnets, the horse on which heclaimed individual gold at theLondon 2012 Olympic Games, usedthat to their advantage and had asuperb run when second to last toride against the clock. Last man inwas Martin Fuchs, and the 22-year-old steered PSG Future into runner-up spot ahead of Pius Schwizer inthird. The Swiss wereunderstandably buoyant at the endof the day. “We Swiss are in good

shape right now!” said Schwizerthis evening. As the 30th Helsinki Horse Showmoved to the Helsingin Jäähalli, thecity’s oldest indoor ice rink, coursedesigner, Frenchman FredericCottier, had to be at his creativebest. Making the cut into the jump-off was not an easy task as therewas no room for adjusting stridepatterns throughout the 12-fencetrack. Once riders committedthemselves to going on a certaindistance they had to stick to theirdecision even if the fences didn’tcome up right, and Italy’s FrancoFrancesco was eliminated for a fallwhen the line he took to thepenultimate oxer left him too faraway, and his grey mare, BancoPopalare Bari Cassandra, decided toslam on the brakes.Talking about the challenge ofriding in the relatively small arena,

Guerdat joked, “Switzerland is asmall country so we are used tosmall things!”Result: 1, Nino des Buissonnets (SteveGuerdat) SUI 0/0 34.96; 2, PSG Future(Martin Fuchs) SUI 0/0 35.10; 3, Six-tine de Vains (Pius Schwizer) SUI 0/035.33; 4, VDL Zirocco Blue NOP (JurVrieling) NED 0/0 35.78; 5, Extra vanEssene (Marlon Zanotelli) BRA 0/036.18; 6, Cornado ll (Christian Ahl-mann) GER 00 36.57; 7, Ayade de Sep-ton Et HCD (Kevin Staut) FRA 0/037.24; 8, Edesa S Banjan (Geir Bullik-sen) NOR 0/0 37.66; 9, Prime Time desVagues (Alexandre Fontanelle) FRA0/0 39.27; 10, Fardon (Anna-Julia Kon-tio) FIN 0/2 41.11; 11, Sea Coast For-lap DC (Daniel Deusser) GER 0/435.90; 12, Gotha FRH (Henrik von Eck-ermann) SWE 0/4 35.97; 13, Casello(Douglas Lindelow) SWE 0/8 36.50; 14,Connery (Luca Moneta) ITA 0/1236.48; 15, Ashkari (Yasmin Pinchen)GBR 0/23.www.company.com

The third leg of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2014/2015 Western European Leaguewas held in Lyon, France on November 2nd.

The French could not contain theirexcitement when the reinging FEIEuropean Individual Champion,Roger Yves Bost, emergedvictorious on home ground. The competition was charged fromthe start, it came down to 14combinations in the jump off againstthe clock. The 49-year-oldFrenchman Yves Bost and his 10-year-old horse Qoud’Coeur de laLoge snatched victory from the graspof Dutch veteran Wout-Jan van derSchans and Capetown. Germany’sHans-Dieter Dreher took the thirdplace with Embassy II, leaving TheNetherland’s Gerco Schroder andCongnac Champblanc to settle infourth.18 countries were respresented overthe course designed by FrankRotherberger’s first round trackwhich proved to be a significant test

to the 40 starters, the course includedmaximum-height verticals and oxerswhich were spread around the arenabut, arguably, the final decorativewhite planks produced some of thebiggest surprises of the day when thetop three riders in the currentLongines world rankings all went outof contention there.7 riders chose to retire in round oneincluding former Olympic and FEIWorld Cup™ champion RodrigoPessoa from Brazil (Status),Australian star Edwina Tops-Alexander (Old Chap Tame) andSpain’s Sergio Alvarez-Moya(Action-Breaker). But no-one wouldhave expected that current World no.1 Scott Brash from Great Britainwith his London 2012 Olympic teamgold-medal-winning ride HelloSanctos, World no. 2 LudgerBeerbaum and his European team

The FEI South American Eventing Championship2014 was held at Cross Horse Stables in Barretos,Sao Paulo, Brazil in early November. The hostnation had plenty to celebrate when taking the teamand individual gold. This important CCI 2* is one ofthe two qualifying competitions in the SouthAmerican region for the Pan-American Games whichwill take place in Ontario, Canada in July 2015. Atotal of four countries contested the team medals, while 26 horse-and-rider combinations battled it outfor the individual title which went to Brazil’sHenrique Pinheiro riding Land Quenote do Feroleto.Brazil had an assertive win by finishing with over 23penalty points in hand over the silver medalistsChile, Argentina pipped Uruguay to the bronzeplacing.Chile was the only country to finish with a full teamof four riders, and Carlos Lobos got off to aspectacular start with a dressage mark of 46.2 whichleft him out in front in the individual rankings at theend of the first phase. the host nation already in a strong position going intocross-country day.One horse-and-rider combination retired while 10were eliminated, and the Brazilians began to lookvulnerable when Marcio Carvalho Jorge wasamongst the latter, leaving them with only a three-man side going into the final day. That did nothing todeter the Brazillians who were well capable ofcarrying the weight.Chile’s Lobos was still holding the lead as the finaljumping phase began having added just 0.8 timepenalties during his cross-country run, and withJorge out of contention Brazil’s Fofanoff was sittingin silver medal position having added just 1.2 to histally. Pinheiro lay in bronze medal spot and alwayslooked threatening when he was the only rider tobring his horse home inside the time on cross-country day. And when he produced one of just fourclears over the colored poles. the 36-year-old riderrocketed up to gold medal spot with his 11-year-oldHolsteiner mare in the final analysis. One jumpingerror cost Lobos which moved him onto a final scoreof 51.0. So close but not close enough, he was
