Shopaholic alert! One of the three major shopping seasons in the country is back with mega shopping offers, dining options, endless entertainment and fun-filled

activities. From November 10 this year to January 1, 2014, shoppers will get the advantage to enjoy irresistible offers and great discounts from luxury brands to affordable items all put together by malls and retail stores throughout Malaysia. You know the phrase, “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping”? There just may be some wisdom in that.

So go ahead and indulge in “retail therapy”— defined as the act of shopping and spending to improve one’s mood. Studies have revealed that 60% of shoppers usually purchase something to cheer themselves up, or as a form of celebration.

In small, manageable doses it can be therapeutic and soothe the soul. Shopping, like everything else is life, isn’t a problem when it’s done in moderation. So take your time bargain hunting and enjoy the great deals around you!

Retail therapy soothes the soulMalls throughout the country are offering discounts and sales this year-end

Fear Of Missing OutWe know that when something is sold, our opportunity to buy is gone. This inspires a fear of “missing out” that we often don’t consciously notice -- which enhances the power of our emotional reaction. We may not actually know why we’re jumping to purchase that 80% off sweater shirt you didn’t actually want before it was reduced. The solution is to make a list of coveted items and only buy what you’re sure wanted before it went on sale.

CompetitionThe fear of “missing out” is heightened by the knowledge that you’re competing with others. For many this turns into “competitive sport” shopping. Winning is the goal, sometimes even more so than what we’re buying. Crowds heighten emotions and competition can reduce our ability to think carefully about the true value of what we’re buying. Time is the solution. Take time and a few calm moments to level off the excitement of the moment. It’ll reduce the chance of making ultimately an unsatisfying purchase.

Assumed ValueOddly enough we rely on the price charged for merchandise to understand its value. Most people don’t understand why one pair of shoes is RM80 and

another RM400. So we rely on the price as a measure of quality and style. That explains why those RM400 shoes that are now RM150 seem like a much better purchase than a RM80 full-priced pair that we might use more often. The cure is to imagine the sale price as the initial, unreduced price and ask yourself if you’d be as excited.

Focus On Saving Not SpendingSales shift our focus toward what we’re saving rather than what we’re spending. Retailers tap into the frenzy of saving by tallying your savings on your receipt or posting savings rather than costs on websites and in stores. The quickest fix is to pay with cash. Credit cards are a buffer and put the emphasis on what you’re getting rather than what you’re giving when you shop.

Capitalizing On Time InvestmentSale shopping, and for many sale stalking, takes time and it’s an emotional investment. Many shoppers feel pressure to make good on that investment by not leaving empty-handed. Finding something, anything, can feel like winning a scavenger hunt - and of course you can’t leave without the prize. Perspective is, again, the key. Ask yourself if you really want the item or if you are caught up in the moment.

Shopping TipsMegaSale shoppers ultimately spend more money than non-sale shoppers. They often purchase things that aren’t truly satisfying; and because they aren’t satisfied they continue to shop. Additionally, the rush they get from snagging a bargain has an addictive quality - the products they purchase are in some ways secondary.

Getting a coveted item is blissful. Getting a discount is also blissful. Getting both at the same time is harder. A simple shift of focus and bit of planning is all it takes to master the ability to consistently make that truly great discounted purchase.

Here are five ways that sales make you vulnerable, and how to make better decisions about what to buy during this Mega Sale period:

Rama, the prince of Ayodhya was ordered by his father, King Dasharatha, to go away from his country and come back after living in the forest for 14 years. So Rama went on exile with his devoted wife Sita and faithful brother, Lakshmana. When Ravana, the demon king of Lanka abducted Sita and took her away to his island kingdom of Lanka, Rama fought against and killed Ravana. He rescued Sita and returned to Ayodhya after 14 years. The people of Ayodhya were very happy to hear of their beloved prince’s homecoming and to celebrate his return, they lit up their houses with earthen lamps (diyas), burst crackers and decorated the entire city in the grandest manner.

This is believed to have started the tradition of Diwali. Year after year this homecoming of Lord Rama is commemorated on Diwali with lights, fireworks, bursting of crackers and merriment. The festival gets its name Deepawali, or Diwali, from the rows (avali) of lamps (deepa) that the people of Ayodhya lit to welcome their King.

While Diwali is popularly known as the “festival of lights”, the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is “the awareness of the inner light”. Central to Hindu philosophy is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman.

The celebration of Diwali as the “victory of good over evil”, refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one’s true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings joy or peace. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light.

Most recognized symbol of Diwali : the deepa or light

Favored Diwali delights

School children gather to light deepa on a “Kolam” or painting using rice powder

INNER LIGHTCelebrating

THE

Diwali has been celebrated since ancient times. There are many different reasons for the cause behind this festival, as many as ten mythical and historical reasons but the most popular is in the Ramayana, the great Hindu epic.

Originally created as a way to diversify Terengganu’s tourism offerings, the Monsoon Cup is aptly held during the monsoon season. The strong winds that are a signature of the monsoon are exactly what is required for exciting match races, adding a factor of uncertainty into the complex mix of strategy and technical skills that are hallmarks of yacht match racing. Duyong Island’s location within Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu’s state capital, makes the logistics of organising this international event relatively easy, while the island’s long standing tradition as a ship and boat building centre has become known worldwide thanks to the Monsoon Cup.

The inaugural Monsoon Cup was held in 2005 and debuted as an official event of the Swedish Match Tour. Since then, the Monsoon Cup has become the final race in the World Match Racing Tour, a ten match circuit held in venues all around the world, including France, Korea and Bermuda.

The weeklong event showcases yachting teams competing head to head in match races. The close proximity of the estuary of the Terengganu River to Duyong Island means that spectators are able to get a good view of the action from specially designed viewing areas at the event centre. The Monsoon Cup is a lively affair with a carnival-esque atmosphere, and many

side events are organised to run throughout the entire week to entertain the teams, their crew, supporters and hoardes of tourists converging on this East Coast state.

Terengganu’s profile is raised every year when sailors from all over the world meet to compete in the prestigious Monsoon Cup. The final yacht race on the World Match Racing Tour, the Monsoon Cup takes place in the waters off Duyong Island at the estuary of the Terengganu River during November/December.

The Mandurah Ocean Marina features boardwalks, parks and piazzas. It provides a colorful mix of waterfront market stalls, shops, cafes and restaurants as well as modern facilities for both professional and recreational boating enthusiasts.

Like neighbouring settlements Bunbury and Rockingham, dolphins and whales frequent the city annually and dolphin and whale watching are a popular pastime. In December, the canal areas in Mandurah become well known for their Christmas lights and special boat cruises are often promoted as a result.

Two zoos lie within the outskirts of the city, as well as the Abingdon Miniature Village set amongst four acres of award winning botanical gardens and include water features and a Koi pond, exotic birds, miniature trains and toy trains for the kids to enjoy. A traditional hedge

maze and open labyrinth running maze are favorites with visitors, as well as the adjoining Ruby House, home to traditional tea rooms. Here, you can enjoy a Devonshire Tea and light lunches in the lovingly restored 1938 Palmyra house or in the tranquil Wisteria covered tea garden.

Not too far away is the Cape Lavender Swan Valley, just 200 metres from another attraction, the Margaret River Chocolate Company at the heart of the tourist trail. There is a beautiful gift shop brimming with natural hand-made products and lavender themed gifts for health, harmony and healing.Lavender jams, chutneys, honey and preserves are also available including the famous freshly-baked lavender scones with jam and lashings of cream. You can also enjoy a traditional three tier high tea whilst appreciating the views across the fields to the Perth Hills.

Ever since the advent of budget airlines, more Malaysians have been vacationing overseas and Australia is much favored due to its flight time proximity. Many have journeyed to Perth but just 40 minutes out of the city is an increasingly popular tourist destination called Mandurah.

The locality then was known as Mandjoogoordap, which translates as ‘meeting place of the heart’. After the European settlement, it was adapted to Mandurah. The first people known to have inhabited the area were Bindjareb who lived well off the land, which abounded in fish, game, berries and fruits.

Mandurah expanded slowly over the years, with the main industries of the township being fishing and fruit growing, as well as canning factories to store the produce.

At the turn of the century Mandurah was already emerging as a tourist destination, attracting many international visitors. The city centre foreshore is home to a variety of wildlife including dolphins, pelicans, shags, and an abundance of marine life including the blue manna crab which has become synonymous with the area. The city is also known for its protected waterways, beaches and boating and fishing activities.

The relaxed pose of this base jumper belies the technical difficulties of base jumping KL Tower - an iconic landmark

For a unique dining experience, try the revolving Atmosphere 360 restaurant at KL Tower…it’s not just about the food but more about the panoramic views here!

Atmosphere 360 is relatively new, having opened its elevator doors in 2012 but already it has played host to corporate events, fashion shows, private parties, mini concerts and business meetings. Starry fiber optic ceiling lights lend a galactic feel to the restaurant’s ambiance especially at night. A grand piano greets patrons at the door but the piano player and a small band of musicians play only during dinner and special occasions.

The restaurant opens from 11.30am to 11.00pm and serves lunch, tea and dinner. Advance reservations are recommended and diners must dress appropriately (no shorts or slippers) or be required to wear a batik sarong!

As KL Tower hosts the annual Tower Jump competition, you may see more than you bargained for when you dine here in the month of September…base jumpers somersaulting, leaping, dancing and generally performing acrobatics as they step off the top of the tower to the ground below. Enough to make you pause in mid-feed but worth the experience nonetheless!

See you at the top :

DINESKYIN THE

As the restaurant sits on top of KL Tower at 282 metres above ground, and is wrapped around with ceiling-high glass windows, the view of the city and as far as the eye can see (weather permitting!) are stunning and mesmerizing.

A full cycle of the revolving restaurant takes one hour, sufficient time for you to dine through the appetisers, main course and extensive dessert selection.

In line with the Government’s call to the public to switch from cash to electronic toll payment system which is faster and easier, all toll transactions at the Kempas Toll Plaza (on the North-South Expressway) and the Perling Toll Plaza (on Linkedua highway) will be conducted electronically beginning 6 January 2014.

As such, the public utilising both toll plazas are advise to get their PLUSMiles or Touch ‘n Go cards at the nearest customer service centres along the PLUS highways.

According to PLUS’ Managing Director, Dato’ Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid, “The implementation of electronic toll transaction at both toll plazas is a continuation of the same initiative at Linkedua. It is also part of the company’s strategies to preserve the environment.”

To further promote smoother, safer and more convenient travel on its highways, PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) is currently conducting a fourth lane widening project on the Rawang-Sungai Buloh, Shah Alam-Sungai Buloh, Bukit Jalan-Jalan Duta and Nilai Utara-Seremban stretches on the North-South Expressway (NSE) and the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE).

The lane widening project currently affects the emergency lanes and may disrupt traffic flow at the designated locations.

As such, PLUS advises the public passing through the affected areas to drive carefully and obey all instructions at all times.

At the same time, PLUS will ensure the public continues to enjoy smooth and safer travel at these areas at all times.

Children should be properly restrained at all times!

There have been so many cases of accidents involving children being thrown out of a vehicle during a crash because they were not properly secured in a car seat. Yet, the sight of mothers holding their young ones on their laps on the front passenger seat is very common!

Little that they know that a 7 kg child can actually be easily thrown out through the windscreen even though the vehicle is moving at 50 km/h!

A study conducted by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) shows that infants are likely to be the highest victims of accidents due to the fact that they are not properly restrained in cars.

World Health Organization (WHO) in its Global Status Report on road safety in 2013 states that wearing a seat-belt reduces the risk of a fatal injury up to 50% for front seat occupants and up to 75% for rear seat occupants.

Child restraints reduce the likelihood of a fatal crash by approximately 70% among infants and between 54% and 80% among young children.

In addition, 2,200 rear-seat passengers could still survive the 6,282 accidents throughout Malaysia in 2008 if they had worn their seat belts.

SET A BUDGETBefore chalking out a plan for the holiday, the most important thing is to set a budget. It helps you to plan and enjoy the trip within your limits. Always estimate a little more than what you might need.

PLAN AHEADThe first thing you need to do is to be sure of what you need from this trip. Do you want to experience the local culture or just have fun on those sandy beaches? Strategize your trip according to your needs and likes.

READ UP BEFORE YOU GOPrepare yourself before plunging into an unknown holiday destination. Buy a good guidebook and read up on the culture, history, local attractions of the destination. You can read the local publications on-line or surf the net for more information. The more you know, the better you can enjoy or appreciate the place and their traditions.

PACK LIGHT AND RIGHTPack only the essential things. Avoid carrying unnecessary things around. A heavy luggage may sometimes dampen your holiday spirit. Carry clothes that are comfortable and right for the season. As much as possible try to stuff everything you need in a single carry-on bag.

ALWAYS RESERVE YOUR STAYIt’s always better to book your stay if possible because all you need is a good night’s sleep after an exciting day.

HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONSUnreasonable expectations can lead to unwanted stress, so enjoy the holiday by managing what you can with the time you have. Embrace each moment, whether good or bad.

If you stop getting thirsty, you need to drink more water. When a human body is dehydrated, its thirst mechanism shuts off.

Each year 2,000,000 smokers either quit smoking or die of tobacco-related diseases.

Zero is the only number that cannot be represented by Roman numerals.

1. Find out if you spend more or less than you earn.Going along based on simple observation and your gut feeling are easy enough. If you notice the balance in your saving accounts decreasing or your debts (credit cards and personal loans) increasing every so often, you are probably overspending. Doing a budget helps you see exactly how much you are overspending by each month or year ; it also gives you a more accurate idea of the size and scale of the problem, if you have one.Overspending can lead to several problems, including a vicious debt cycle of taking out more loans and credit cards to service your overspending and the existing debt that you have.

2. Know what you spend and how much you spend.By doing a budget, you can break down exactly where your expenditure goes and more accurately see if you’re actually spending how much you think you are.

3. Plan your spending in the future.

If you are aware of your personal financial situation, you can more easily take control of your spending and actively manage your own ‘profit-and-loss’ statement, so you know what you can or cannot afford to spend. This allows you to prioritise your spending according to your means; you can then plan your future spending by setting spending targets and sticking to them.Even if you are not the type to ‘stick to a budget’, doing a personal budget is a useful way to have a an overview of your financial situation as well as your types of expenditure.
