27 Early Release Day
Dear Parents/Guardians,
With the blink of an eye, the fall season has come to a close and winter is among
us. With that brings concert season for both our bands and choirs along with the
kick-off of our basketball and wrestling season. We look forward to seeing you at
NRMS for these wonderful student events!
On Election Day, our teachers and staff members were engaged in professional
development sessions to support the Ohio Improvement Process (OIP) by giving
our teachers time to collaborate with the assigned Teacher Based Teams (TBT).
As a middle school staff, we are furthering our professional development by
reading a book together titled On Common Ground which focuses on the power
of professional learning communities in schools. Our day began with a group
discussion about selected portions of the text and then teachers worked as TBTs
to complete an activity related to both the book and their work at NRMS. We
appreciate the opportunity to have the time to conduct this type of meaningful
work as it directly impacts our effectiveness with our students.
Unfortunately, November 5th also brought some disappointment to our Shape
Our Schools community group that rallied around the passing of the bond issue.
We truly appreciate the countless hours and dedication devoted to this cause by
parents and staff over the past few months. Although the election results did not
turn out as we had hoped, this does not in any way deter the district from
continuing its goal of providing a high quality education for all students and
assisting them in becoming life-long learners. We have much to be proud of at
NRMS, and will continue to move forward with your partnership.

7th & 8th grade Chain Links club members, Mrs. Pissini, and Mrs.
Paolino spent time collecting food items and coats for the district’s
annual “Stuff the Bus” project to help out those in need
Charity volleyball and basketball games consisting of 8th graders playing
our NRMS staff members generated over $1200 in donations for Project
Thanks that will go right back to middle school families that can use an
extra hand at the holidays. Many thanks go to Mrs. Whitely for
organizing the games!
8th grade Chain Links, Polar Bears, and Team Ena made Happy
Thanksgiving/Get Well cards for patients at Marymount Hospital who
will be unable to head home for the holidays. This effort was coordinated
in a joint effort by counselor Deanna Paolino and parents Joanne and

Principal’s Message Continued Honor Society students are volunteering one Saturday each month at Mount Royal Villa to assist residents with
playing Bingo
NRMS Student Council has wrapped up their holiday canned food drive for the North Royalton Food Bank.
We are so proud of the outstanding efforts of citizenship our students are eager to display and look forward to continuing
to provide opportunities for them to understand their role in the bigger community!
Looking ahead, we are thrilled to bring back the very popular Rachel’s Challenge assembly as part of this year’s
Leadership Conference at NRMS on December 13th. Rachel’s Challenge sets the premise for the development of
Chain Links groups (or Pay-It-Forward type groups) in schools and all of our students currently enrolled have not had the
opportunity to learn the real story behind the cause. The assembly tells the story of Rachel Scott who was fatally
wounded in the Columbine High School tragedy and her challenge left behind – treat others with kindness and
compassion and you just may change the world you live in. A parent presentation will also take place that night at the
High School PAC at 6:00 PM. Information will be sent out via Constant Contact. Please mark your calendars to attend –
this is an amazing event for the whole community.
Even though conferences have just taken place recently, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s team or counselor at
any time with questions or concerns about your student’s progress. Likewise, with cold and flu season among us, please
reinforce good sleeping and eating habits at home to ward off those germs Consistent attendance is critical for
academic success and while work can always be made up at home, there is no replacement for being present for quality
classroom instruction.
Finally, one more round of congratulations to our very own Mrs. Sarah Franko for being named the 2013 Milken
Educator for the State of Ohio!!! The Milken Foundation specifically seeks out early to mid-career educators for this
prestigious honor who exemplify an engaging and inspiring presence that motivates and impacts students, colleagues and
the community. Mrs. Franko is the perfect recipient of this award and we are so blessed to have her on our team at
NRMS!
I wish you all the happiest of holidays and want to extend my gratitude for the ability to serve this wonderful building
and district! Enjoy quality time together as a family in the coming weeks.
Fondly,
Melissa I. Vojta
Principal
PTA President’s Message
Well, the holidays are officially right around the corner! So far, it’s been a great school year! There are many activities
going on throughout the building. Thanks to all of the PTA parents that have been volunteering to make sure it is a great
year for everyone! Special thanks to Kim Dyson and Helena Johnson for doing a great job with Spirit Wear, Kathy
Lineweaver for a successful Fall Fundraiser, Lori Krzywicki for all of her efforts with the Reflections Program, Diane
Trottnow for all of her hard work with Box Tops, Diane Bulkowski and Jen Wazny and all of their volunteers for all their
hard work with the Socials, and Diane Bulkowski for her efforts with the Memory Book. The PTA was instrumental in
helping with donations for the 2nd
annual Tailgate! Over 400 students cheered on the 7th and 8
th grade Football teams!
The PTA wrote out checks to each team for Student Incentives. We give $1.00 per child per quarter for the teachers to
use for incentives for their classroom.
Student led conferences are happening. This is a great way for students to take ownership of their grades and explain to
their parents what they are doing in school. Don’t forget, you can always request a parent teacher conference. Just
contact your child’s teacher, as they are always willing to meet with you.
We do not have a December meeting, so I hope to see all of you at the January meeting. It is January 21, 2014 at 9:30 at
the HS Community Room.
I wish you and your family a happy holiday season and all the best in 2014!

North Royalton Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes
November 19, 2013 Community Room
Call to Order: Lynn Dorman, President 12:05 p.m.
Pledge and Welcome
SECRETARY’S REPORT – Mary Ellen Watrobski – October minutes were posted, no changes or additions to be
made.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT – Jen Porter – We received a thank you note from Mrs. Connelly
for Staff person of the month, one from Mrs. Franko, one from NREF/NR Stadium Foundation thanking members for
attending the Taste of North Royalton. All birthday cards have been distributed.
TREASURER’S REPORT – Sandy Mraz - Balance on hand: $27,559.83
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Mrs. Vojta
Good afternoon everyone. Since our last meeting we had a teacher in-service day. The buildings are implementing
parts of the Ohio Improvement Process; this means that as a district and as a building we have committees in place, and
we work on common goals. One goal in the district is to be able to collaborate and have common standards and
assessments among the teams and schools. At NRMS we have different teams and in the past things have been different,
and we are working to have a more common curriculum. This will help us determine how students are achieving. So,
having time to work together is important. To assist us this year, we have gotten a book called, On Common Ground.
Mr. Bradley brought in two people who gave great strategies for teaching ELA and working toward common core.
Our students have been involved in a lot of service projects. Thanksgiving cards were made for patients at
Marymount Hospital who won’t be able to be home for the holiday. Chain links participated in Stuff the Bus. The 8th
grade honor society students are required to do a service project. In the past they have raked leaves, bake cookies, and
helped with Bingo. The Bingo at Mount Royal Villa has seemed to be the most worthwhile, so they are doing that once a
month this year.
We are collecting for the canned food drive for the NR food band, and NRMS is focusing on the Christmas
collection. We are collecting through Nov. 26th.
We are working on improving communications with home regarding announcements.
Project Thanks is something that the NRMS staff is doing to give back the NRMS families that are in need. The
students are also involved by doing staff vs. student charity games. Next week these games will take place, and the
students pay $1 to watch the games, and money is used to buy gift cards, the staff also had giving trees.
I’m sure you all heard about Sarah Franko’s award. It was very exciting! It was a big secret. It’s the Milken
Educator Award. They search for the teachers, it was not applied for. One teacher from each state is given the award.
The criteria are effective practices, and models of excellence. They look for early to mid-career teachers who use
innovative techniques. It was a great day for the district. And, the people from the Milken Institute had many
compliments for out student body.
Our leadership conference will be combined with our anti-bullying assembly. We will be dong the Rachel’s
Challenge Assembly It’s been about 5 years since we’ve had it here. Rachel was a student killed in Columbine. Her
brother speaks, and it’s very impactful. The assemblies will be different based on age level. We have invited students
from other schools as well. This will be held on 12/13/13. There is a parent piece that evening as well at 6:00 p.m. in the
PAC. We will invite parents from all of the NR schools. We’re very excited about it.
Our winter athletic seasons are beginning. Scrimmages start next week.
TEACHER REPRESENTATIVE – Mrs. Haberkorn, Mrs. Connelly –
Mrs. Connelly: Thank you for the recognition last month; I really appreciate it.
Mrs. Haberkorn: Chicago was great! They had so much fun and saw so many things. The students were well
behaved. Thank you for letting your students participate.
November 2013 Cub Chronicle Page 4 of 15 SCHOOL BOARD REP – Heidi Dolezal – we are disappointed about the bond, but we are meeting with people to see
what they thought about it. We got some positive input last night at the board meeting last night. One parent spoke on
behalf of a newly formed group asking that we working toward getting the bond passed.
(Becky Cozzens: A parent group started to try to work on getting the bond issue back on the ballot and put out accurate
information about the needs of the district. Please look up www.facebook.com/PASSNorthRoyalton.com for more info.)
(A special Thank You to Heidi for her dedication to our district as she is retiring. We made a donation on her behalf to
the Red Cross for the Typhoon victims).
OFFICER’S REPORT
PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Lynn Dorman
Thank you to each of you attending today’s meeting and for participating in our PTA. I met with the Executive
Board this morning to review their role, and would like to take a minute to review our role as PTA members.
The PTA mission is as follows: A powerful voice for all children, a relevant source for families and communities,
and a strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child. I would like us to keep this in mind as we move
forward this year. What are the values of the PTA? Work in partnership with a wide array of individuals and
organizations to accomplish goals. We all need to work together. We can agree to disagree, but at the end of the day,
compromises must be made for the good of the PTA. We value our colleagues and ourselves. Respect. I think this may
be missing from our PTA right now. We as members need to respect the administration, staff and other PTA members.
We may not agree with directives that come from the administration, but we are here to support those decisions,
especially when it comes to the welfare of the children. The staff and administration act in the best interest of the
children. With regards to other PTA members, even if you don’t particularly support a PTA member, remember that
people talk and feelings get hurt. We invite the stranger and welcome the newcomer. We listen to a wide spectrum of
viewpoints. We can agree to disagree as long as it happens in a respectful manner. We want new people to join our
PTA. They are the future of this organization. We act consistently with our beliefs. Stick to your guns in a respectful
manner. I hope you will join me in bringing the positive respectful spirit back to our PTA.
The Taste of North Royalton was a great night! Thank you to everyone who donated items for baskets.
I know many of you are disappointed about the bond issue. Please consider joining PASS.
Thank you to everyone who has been volunteering for the fundraisers, parties, and those who will be working the
book fair.
Each PTA unit will be reviewing the Bylaws, please see me if you’re interested in helping.
Our next meeting is Jan. 21, 2014.
2ND

new teacher evaluation process. We talked about Skyping in the kindergarten between one of our classes and a class in
England. We got an update on the gifted program. We finished up talking about early release dates. Teacher in-services
on early release dates are often taken up with safety processes, and then some professional development.
FACEBOOK – Diane Bulkowski – I’m doing some updates, trying to keep up with things going on; there’s a great new
picture of the school.
November 2013 Cub Chronicle Page 5 of 15 LEGISLATION – Tawny Zajc – My job is to pass along information, and the common core is a hot topic currently.
The common core issue has passed in legislation; Ohio PTA supports it; I’d like to ask it to be explained, and if you
wish, you can respond to your representatives in either support or opposition.
Mrs. Vojta: the purpose is to have commonality among all districts, so it is easier for students when they move to
a new district. Teachers must be educated on the common core and updated standards, which is time consuming. The
purpose is to reduce gaps in learning. We were told expect a 30% drop in scores because of the new curriculum and OAA
tests not aligning. The common core standards are more rigorous.
If you’re in interested in other issues, please look at the Ohio PTA website.

Counselor’s Corner
As parents, we think a lot about our child’s self-esteem.
On the one hand, it all seems so simple. Tell them how great they are, how great they're doing, and they'll
radiate self-love!
On the other hand, it’s really not as simple as lavishing praise on our children. Helping your child develop a
positive self-image is a parenting work in progress so to speak. See below for some tips on how to promote
healthy, positive self-esteem:
Healthy self-esteem starts with a loving, nurturing relationship between a child and her primary caregiver.
Children need the security of knowing they are unconditionally loved and accepted -even if we don’t love and
accept all of their behavior! They need at least one adult in their life to make them feel like they are the
greatest treasure this world has known. This is the essential foundation for healthy self-esteem.
As a parent, your self-esteem matters. A child’s self-esteem is acquired, not inherited, and children learn
through your modeling. If you are excessively harsh on yourself or frequently put yourself down, you may be
inadvertently sending messages about self-acceptance and self-love - the essence of healthy self-esteem. If
you are influenced by your own unhealthy childhood, seek professional help so that your history doesn’t
become your child’s destiny.
Spend quality time with your children. When you spend time with your children, you are sending a message
that they are valuable. They understand you like being with them – they are likeable. Think beyond simply
being in close physical proximity to your child. Sitting next to your child while he watches TV and you check
your email is one way of being together, but think about the message you would be sending if you put the
computer down and watched the show with your child. Carve out time that allows you to be fully present
with your child.
Self-esteem comes from feeling a sense of accomplishment. Sometimes this sense of accomplishment
comes from succeeding in school, or with sports, but it also happens when children feel like they successfully
solved a problem. There will always be times when it is best for you to step in and help your child manage a
difficult situation, but when you micro-manage the process, you may be depriving her of the opportunity to
feel the success that comes from figuring it out on her own.
Encourage your children to try new things; to step out of their comfort zone. Feeling success with something
you feared you would fail at is a real confidence booster. If your child is struggling at a new task or activity,
encourage him to keep trying and remember to praise the effort, not the outcome. Perhaps your child is a
terrific athlete but he struggles in school. Remind him that the same skills that help on the field/court/track
(discipline, repetition, patience) also help in other arenas, such as the classroom. Don’t allow your child's self-
limiting beliefs to stop him from challenging himself.
(Continued)
November 2013 Cub Chronicle Page 9 of 15
Counselor’s Corner Continued
Encourage independence. It is so hard to let go of control as our children grow up, but they really do need
some autonomy in order to develop a healthy sense of self. If you are overinvolved in their life, your child
doesn’t know where you end and she begins. Part of developing healthy self-esteem is getting in touch with
that which is unique and wonderful about us as individuals. Let your kids discover this in safe, age-
appropriate ways. One way of encouraging independence is allowing your child to experience the natural
consequences of her behavior. For instance, if your child forgets her science project at home, let her
experience the consequences at school. If you rush it up to the school, you may unwittingly interfere with the
process of your child developing a sense of personal responsibility and accountability, all of which contributes
to healthy self-esteem.
Let your child experience disappointment! As parents, we have an instinct to want to protect our children
from hard feelings, but children learn a lot about themselves (and life in general) by making mistakes, being
disappointed and experiencing loss. They need to learn how to cope with life’s curve balls, because let’s face
it; these feelings don’t stop after Middle School. Instead of viewing these challenges as “bad”, view them as
opportunities for your child’s growth. If you want to help, instead of placating or distracting them away from
their feelings, help your child to identify why they are feeling disappointed/sad/frustrated and allow them the
space to figure out how to help themselves feel better.
We love our kids and we want to give them the very best, especially the tools that will help them to evolve
into happy, healthy adults. There is no one, universal “right” way of parenting. Part of what helps your child
develop a healthy sense of self is simply experiencing the effort you put into getting it right as a parent. If you
have any concerns about your child’s self-esteem, especially at this challenging (or exciting!) developmental
stage, please feel free to call one of us for help.
Warmly,
Katie, Deanna, Jen and Dan

TOGETHER WE CAN…
Parent Teacher Association
Make A Difference Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends:
The beginning of the school year marks the beginning of another school year of opportunities and
challenges for the students of North Royalton Middle School. We all want to see our students become the
best they can be. We try to support them in many different ways throughout the school year. One of the
most important ways we can support and encourage our students is by becoming a PTA member. Your
$6.00 membership fee helps provide social activities and creative challenges for our students. Our PTA
volunteers chaperone socials, provide tutoring, and assist the staff in many different ways.
Please show your children that their education is important to you by joining the NRMS PTA. Fill out
the bottom portion of this sheet and enclose it and your $6.00 membership fee in an envelope marked
“PTA Membership”, and return it to the school via your child as soon as possible. Everyone is welcome
at our PTA meetings, but it is not necessary to attend the meetings in order to become a PTA member.
The meeting dates and times are as follows:
