  • He is such a kind, patient and veryresponsive pony just the type RDAneed. Beside Magpie is Aidan ODonnellone of many riders who love him to bits, well anyone who met him would!Aidan is 14 and lives with his parents,Nicky and Jeff, in Richmond Avenue,Gloucester, and has been riding atCotswold RDA for 212 years. His disability is Asperger syndrome aform of autism, which is a lifelongcondition effecting how a person makessense of the world, processesinformation and relates to other people. It is known as a hidden disability, meaning you cant tell someone has thecondition from their outwardappearance. The three main areas of difficulty forsufferers are social communication, social interaction and social imagination.Characteristics vary from one individualto another and, as well as the three mainareas of difficulty, people may also havea love of routines, special interests orsensory difficulties.

Try stopping him now!Aidan is home educated as he foundschool life too much to cope with. Hefeels very uncomfortable in crowds, doesnt like changes to his routine andhis sensory difficulty is noise he hatedthe dining hall at school as it was tooloud. His parents suggested to him that hemight like to try horse riding. He didntwant to initially, but agreed to give it a tryin the knowledge that if he didnt like it,he could stop. Well you try stopping himnow! Nicky and Jeff cant believe the

difference in Aidans behaviour sinceattending RDA. He has really come outof himself and now regards thevolunteers as friends and will actually talkto them about things going on in his life. His parents said the support from thevolunteers has been fantastic.Aidan, along with five other riders, entered the Midwest regional round ofthe Countryside Challenge. They cameaway with a 6th, 3rd, 2nd and amazing1st from Aidan who was also jointwinner of the trophy awarded for therider with the highest points. Aidan wenton to the Nationals held at Hartpury inJuly and came a magnificent 3rd!Nearly all of the British Para-Equestrian squad on the pathway to

2012 were riders that came throughRDA (and many of these people startedfor therapeutic reasons!). Perhaps 2016will be Aidans year, but he and otherswill need all the help Cotswold RDA canprovide through facilities, cost-effectivetraining and support. In turn, thiswonderful charity can only deliver to thelevel of funding it receives fromgenerous public donations and financialassistance from businesses and otherorganisations.

Invaluable supportCheltenham Racecourse itself hasprovided invaluable support over manyyears, and continues to do so. Anotherconcerned organisation CountrysideAlliance is also paving the way formuch needed funds to be raised forCotswold RDA by sharing proceedsfrom its forthcoming event atCheltenham Racecourse. • Delicious DishesMethodMix together the almonds and dried fruit. Add the sugar, breadcrumbs, orange rind and suet, then the flour, salt andspices, stirring at each stage. When well mixed, add the beaten eggs, orange juice andGuinness, stir well to make a fairly stiff consistency. Coverthe bowl with a clean damp cloth and leave in a cool placeovernight (for at least 12 hours).Next day, grease the pudding basin and line the bottomwith greaseproof paper. Fill with the mixture, pressing welldown. Cover the top with a double layer of greaseproofpaper, pleating it in the middle to allow for the pudding torise.Cover top with cotton cloth about the size of a manshandkerchief, tie with string around the basin, then bring thecorners together at the top and tie to make a carrying handle.Put the pudding into a large steamer or pan of boiling water(sufficient water to come half way up the side of the basin).Simmer for 6 hours (or 4 hours and for another 1-2 hoursbefore serving). Keep a good eye on the pan, topping upwith boiling water to half-way up the basin as necessary.Leave the puddings until cold, re-cover with cleangreaseproof paper and cloth and store in a cool, dark place. On the day you wish to serve, steam for a further 1-2hours (although heating in the microwave is fine, with no lossof quality).

The last Sunday of the Church Year the Sunday beforeAdvent is often called Stir-up Sunday. It is the traditional dayfor everyone in the family to take a turn at stirring theChristmas Pudding whilst making a wish. This year it is on 25th November.Ingredients(makes one large 2lb/1.2 litre pudding)2oz (56g) Flaked Almonds6oz (170g) Sultanas4oz (113g) Currants6oz (170g) Raisins4oz (113g) Soft Dark Brown Sugar4oz (113g) Fresh White BreadcrumbsFinely grated rind andjuice of 1 Medium Orange4oz (113g) Shredded Suet4oz (113g) FlourPinch of Salt1 rounded tsp (5ml) of GroundCinnamon, Nutmeg and Mixed Spice2 Large Eggs, beaten pint (150ml) Guinness

The news that the City Council has signed theDevelopment Agreement for the Kings Quarterregeneration scheme with Stanhope plc has beenwidely welcomed. It sets out the legal basis on whichwe will work together to deliver the scheme, transforming the area around Kings Square and thebus station. It took a lot of work and negotiation soreaching agreement is a real step forward. There is a lot still to do we need to give the public

chance to comment, assemble the land needed forthe scheme, take it through the planning processand, most urgently, sign up new retailers for the unitsit will create. The opening of B&M in the former M&S store in

Southgate Street and the news that TK Maxx will beopening in their Northgate Street premises are twofurther boosts to the citys retail economy, along witha number of other formerly empty units being filled. Our thoughts will soon turn to Christmas, with the

Christmas Procession and lights switch-on takingplace on Sunday 18th November and the RotaryClub of Gloucesters Charity Tree of Light beingswitched on at 6pm on Thursday 6th December.Another piece of exciting news for Gloucester is the

announcement that we have made it onto the longlist to host matches for the Rugby World Cup in2015. In fact, Kingsholm is the only PremiershipRugby stadium to make it through to the long list of17. The final 12 will be selected in the New Year.Over the last few years, the Council has been

shrinking in size and we dont need as much officeaccommodation. We have come to an arrangementwith Regus plc, a global serviced office provider, tolease three of the floors of our North Warehousebuilding at the Docks which will save the Councilmoney, give us an income and bring jobs toGloucester. Work is due to start imminently onrefurbishing the building. So its been an action-packed few weeks and,

despite a difficult climate, I believe Gloucester ison the up.

    DDiidd yyoouu kknnooww??Holborn Viaduct, London,

    where the A40 starts

All of us have, at some time, passed along partof the A40. Long before it was first given thatname, the route was the old coaching road fromLondon to Oxford and beyond. Beloved byhighwaymen, some of the lonelier stretchesbetween Oxford and Cheltenham could only betravelled safely in daylight hours.

The road starts in the City of London, crossingthe old Fleet river at Holborn viaduct, passingalong Oxford Street, past Marble Arch andjoining the Westway before leaving London andsnaking westwards towards Oxford.

Bypassing the city it crosses the Cotswoldswhere its highest point 820 feet above sealevel is at the old Puesdown Inn, beforestarting the long descent into Cheltenham.Passing directly through the town it nudgesfashionable Montpellier before brushing thedoughnut (GCHQ) and heading directly forGloucester.

Half way between the town and the city isGolden Valley Junction, built in the early 1970s.A three-stacked roundabout, Golden Valley isthe busiest junction on the M5, which carries118,000 vehicles per day.

The A40 now skirts Gloucester via the by-passto Ross and Monmouth where it passes throughthe Gibraltar Tunnels, constructed in the 1960sas part of the route to South Wales. Continuingthrough Abergavenny, Brecon and Carmarthenit then enters Pembrokeshire, arriving at itsmost westerly point in Haverfordwest beforeturning north to the coast and the port ofFishguard.

In all it covers a distance of 256 miles, makingit Britains 7th longest road.

Squatters in your Property! With the long drawn out recession and the ongoing economic crisis, the number of squatters are on the rise. Estimates state that 20-30,000people are squatting, with a high proportion of these being in the Londonarea.Any property can be at risk from squatters, whether it be a

commercial or residential property. One of the surprising issues whenit comes to someone occupyingan empty or abandoned propertythey dont own or rent, is thateven if they enter the propertywithout the owners permission,as long as they havent broken alock or smashed a window togain entry, they arent actuallybreaking the law! The reason this loop hole exists and where the phrasesquatters rights comes from was due to a change in the law back in1977, which introduced Section 6 of the Criminal Law Act 1977stopping landlords from using violence to evict tenants. Squatters havesomewhat taken advantage of this clause and use it to remain in theproperty.Where squatters start to break the law, is when they visibly break

in to the property, steal any of your goods or refuse to leave whenasked. At this stage, the police cant just break into your home untilyou have proved to them that you are the rightful homeowner ortenant. At this stage and with this evidence the police should be ableto act on your behalf and ensure the perpetrators are evicted.Ideally, to avoid this truly horrible situation you need to ensure that

if you leave your home empty for a week or more, you take the sameprecautions as you would to avoid your home being burgled1 Ensure you have good quality locks fitted to your windows and doors2 Have a reliable company install a burglar alarm3 Never leave your home accessible even if you are just poppingto the shops !

  • IInn tthhee GGaarrddeennwith Julia Smith

I have taken a long hard look at my garden. It is likelooking at your face in the mirror you get so used toit that you dont see all the wrinkles getting deeper anddeeper. You just think that you look just the same as youdid ten years ago, and what a shock when you catchsight of yourself accidentally and suddenly realise thatyou look just like your mother! Anyway to get back tothe line of thought, I was under the happy delusion thatmy garden was pretty, and I know it is a tad wild, butsurely it looks mysterious and interesting doesnt it? Wellnow Im not so sure and I am thinking that next year I amgoing to spend some money on renewing the paving soat least something looks crisp and new and then mycrazy, crammed borders may look a little less anarchic.Watch this space!

There are two schools of thought on tidying bordersfor winter: you can either leave the dying foliage andstems of perennials over winter to help insects survive,or alternatively you only leave the architecturally pleasingseedheads etc and get rid of the rest, as the slugs also likerotting foliage to spend their winter under. So what Isuggest is that. if you get round to it. do tidy up and thensit back and feel smug but if you dont get round to it,tell yourself that you are trying to be ecologically soundand still sit back and feel smug!

Prune blackcurrants now removing 2 or 3 of the oldestbranches down to the base. You can take cuttings reallyeasily from blackcurrant bushes by cutting some healthy25cm long shoots which have formed this year (make aslanted cut at the bottom so you know which way upthey go!) and simply sticking them in the ground itreally is that easy.

Plant of the month is the Sedum Herbtsfreude or theIce Plant which starts early in spring with the fat rosettesof succulent, lettuce-green leaves, topped with salmon-pink flower-heads in summer, maturing topinkish-bronze then coppery-red in autumn. Thisversatile perennial is a perfect filler plant for a sunny, well-drained spot. A valuable late source of nectar forbutterflies and bees, the dried flowerheads providestructure and colour in the winter garden and inNovember they still look interesting.

As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be itjust a replanted border or a complete garden design docontact me by mobile or email (details below), or visitmy website. Make this year a special one for your garden.

  • Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2ClearWindows. The company which specialises inrepairing windows which are steamed up,broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly ashomeowners take advantage of their services.Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that its all

about service: Our product is simple. If yourdouble glazing is misted up we can replace theglass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, inany type of frame, and with a new 5 yearguarantee. But its not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Manytradespeople have struggled since last year and Ihonestly feel that during the good times a minorityperhaps didnt focus on customer care as much asthey should have done. We make sure we turn upwhen we say we will, do the job the customerrequires and leave their house as clean as a whistle.I often get comments back from customers onhow they really didnt expect that sort of servicewhich, in a way, is very sad for the service industryas a whole.Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,

Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paulis finding that his approach is a major factor in hissuccess. The truth is that its not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but alsoit makes good business sense. I get a huge amountof business from friends and family of people Ivedone work for, which just goes to show howmuch a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or

    damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on0800 61 21 118.

Pudsey will celebrate his 27th birthday later thismonth when the BBCs Children in Needextravaganza comes to our screens yet again. Its amazing really that it has survived the testof time, particularly in the recent austereconditions.Thousands of people will donate millions of

pounds, ranging from young childrens pocketmoney to multi-millionaires petty cash. It is, ofcourse, a most worthwhile cause which by itsvery profile on national television, is able toattract significantly more donations than it wouldwithout the TV coverage. So what of the equally deserving causes that

do not have the exposure enjoyed by Childrenin Need? They are finding money harder andharder to come by, especially as LocalAuthorities and Central Government cut backon their grant funding of local charities.More and more charities are becoming

reliant on donations from individuals andbusinesses to fund the excellent work that theydo, particularly in the local community. TheGovernment tries hard to find tax breaks andother incentives to encourage us to give, andfortunately the Chancellor quickly withdrew hisrecent plan to restrict tax relief on largerdonations.Money is tight for most of us, but as we head

towards the season of goodwill, perhaps its anappropriate time to remember that there arealways people worse off than we are.
