President’s Corner

As we move into the cooler months, Gold Coast Region has a full calendar of events to round out 2011. As I write this article Dottie and I are preparing for the Halloween “Spooktacular” scheduled for October 29th at the Briny Pub. My thanks again to Mike and Aileen Brennan for hosting this event and providing a beautiful venue on the New River, that

happens to coincide with the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. While I’m on the subject of thanks I also want to again thank Brumos Porsche and Florida Crown Region for providing Gold Coast “Tour to Savannah” participants with a private showing of the exclusive Brumos Museum. This museum is almost 100% Porsche and has some of the most historically significant race cars and other Porsches in existence. More thanks are in order to Bob Varela and all others who have donated used helmets to the Autocross program. Having these loaner helmets available for first time autocrossers is a value added asset that makes the Gold Coast program one of the best in PCA. If you are considering autocrossing we not only have loaner helmets but also the most experienced instructors available.

As I read through the September issue of Panorama I was amazed by the article regarding Chesapeake Region’s 50th Anniversary celebration. As many of you know Gold Coast Region will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2013. The Board of Directors has appointed a Steering Committee to select a location and date for Zonefest 2013 which will be part of Gold Coast Region’s 50th Anniversary extravaganza. In addition Gold Coast Region will celebrate its actual anniversary (December 14th) with a spectacular day event that we hope will rival Chesapeake Region’s anniversary celebration. Some of the things that made the Chesapeake Region’s party so unique was the location at the US Navy & Marine Corps Stadium, a display of Porsches from each of the fifty years they were celebrating as well as other car displays and historical activities throughout the entire day. Their celebration was capped off with a spectacular dinner, awards, speeches, and a whole lot of fun. Our goal . . . . we are going to do it better! In order to do this we would like some sponsors to come forward and some fresh new ideas as well as members who are willing to help with all aspects of this event. If you own or are associated with a business and would like to participate as a sponsor or you are a member who has ideas please contact Steve or Dottie Kidd.

Since my last article Gold Coast Region has had a number of fabulous events and a few that are scheduled to happen the last few days of October. For the “track junkies” we had an exciting Driver Education at Homestead which included great weather and lots of track time for all those who attended. This event was followed by a repeat social at Schnebly Redlands Winery that promised an introduction to their latest tropical brews which included exotic beers, an informative tour of the winery and the wine making process. In addition to the Gold Coast Region events quite a few members participated in the 52nd annual Bay Bottom Crawl in Key West. For those of you who have never been, this is the grand-daddy of all autocrosses. Imagine a 2.2 mile high speed autocross through mangrove swamps that at times are within 20 feet of salt water. This event is sponsored by EVSCC (Ecurie Vitesse Sports Car Club) which has quite a few Porsche owners who are not only great drivers but very vocal. Top on the list is B.J. Fuller who serves not only as MC for the Saturday banquet but also yells “Yeh Porsche!” at every opportunity. If you are a die hard autocrosser you must experience the “crawl” before you hang up your helmet. By the way, when you hear folks talking about turtles it probably has something to do with the Bay Bottom Crawl. As a final note, this year’s crawl recognized Mike Joffee who drove his Cayenne down to Sugarloaf Key to make this his 40th Bay Bottom Crawl. For those interested in seeing how Porsches and Gold Coast members faired, please visit the EVSCC web site and check out this year’s results.

Another non-PCA event in which a number of our members participated was a charity event held at PBIR. This event benefitted the “Big Dog Animal Rescue” group that helps find homes for big dogs that other organizations are unable to accommodate. Our volunteer drivers gave track rides to many volunteers and donors that participated in an auction that raised over $13,000 for this worthy cause. Thanks again to all the PCA members that volunteered their time and Porsches to assist in this effort.

As I wrap up this article, I hope that most of you participated in the election process and voted for the candidates of your choice. The results of the election will be announced at the Holiday Party on December 10th at Largo Mar Country Club. Please plan to attend and welcome your new Officers and Board of Directors that provide the leadership and energy to move our club forward. See you at the party . . .

Article by Fred Kohly and Alfred MarinoConcours Corner

Concours in Winter Park

My wife and I, along with some PCA friends returned from the Winter Park Concours d’Elegance this past weekend held on Beautiful Park Avenue in Winter Park near Orlando (www.

winterparkconcours.com) This car show is slowly evolving as one of the best in the state and southeast for that matter due to the elegance of venue, variety of cars displayed and the high judging standards which one normally sees in events such as Pebble Beach and Cavallino Classic. Over175fineautomobileswereentered which include Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Morgans, Austin Healleys, Alfas, Aston Martins, Mercedez and many more. Even a 3 wheel Italian Iso Isetta showed up towing its own portable drinking bar. (For real). While the exotics dominate the show the Antique Cars are to die for. Too old for me but bring your parents.

While the car show is the highlight for this weekend, this lovely oaktreelinedshadedaffluentcommunityis friendly to tourists and offers plenty of shopping along the show route and has an abundant variety of boutiques and various different shops. The trendy restaurants, bistros and wine rooms along the way provide plenty of additional entertainment and a fine imported cigar from the local

shop can make an afternoon seem even mellower. The People watching is fun but this community has to be famous for its dogs (real dogs). The most beautiful dogs anywhere are in Winter Park and in more variety than the cars. If you enjoy dog watching this is one of the places you want to come and bring your dog (real dog). Back to the Concours. If you want to participate in a car show like this you have to apply and be invited so there is an extreme high level of expectations and you are going to have to have your car looking its best. If you have a car but little time or perhaps lack some experience, help is on the way in the form of my good friends from Marino’s Detailing Alfred and Tara Marino. Al and Tara run one of the top detailing shops anywhere and specialize in “Award Winning Concours Level Detailing. They and their crew can be seen busy at these types of events as they are hired to prep or advice. I asked Al for some tips on how he prepares for a car show. Below are his thoughts.

Detailing Tips for Concours Competition

by Alfred Marino

I would like to share a few important tips that I have learned over the years since the inception of the Winter Park Concours d’Elegance. This spectacular event draws automobile collectors and enthusiasts alike from all over the country. Now in its ninth

year, this show is on its way to becoming the pinnacle of concours competition. One of the many reasons why this event is highly regarded is because it employs the finest nationally recognized and rankedautomobile judges in the country who inspect each vehicle with precision. One of the important reasons why car collectors participate in concours competition is for long term investment. Any vehicle that has won and placed in various concours competitions adds monetary value for the owner. With that in mind, let me share a few important tips that can help you bring yourautomobilefromsecondtofirst.

First of all, you must allow yourself plenty of time when preparing for an event of this magnitude. This is no ordinary detail process but rather a very in-depth and involved process that can take several months to successfully accomplish. It is important to strategized and prepare instages.Byallowingsufficienttime, youcan prioritize and list concerns that need to be address and corrected. For example, searching for a 1957 Porsche Speedster tool kit can be a time consuming process if you don’t have the right resources to help locatewhatyou’relookingfor. You’llfindplenty of aftermarket parts, but you will fare better trying to locate an original item if your goal is to win.

Another nice tip I enjoy sharing is telling my clients that the car needs to be cleaned before it can be detailed. A clean car is a prerequisite to the entire detailing process. It is much like brushing your teeth with food in your mouth; and a car is no different. A clean car is without clutter such as empty soda cans, water bottles, toothpick and gum wrappers that werenot therewhenyoufirstbrought it.One of the goals when entering this event is bringing your car up to its original status like the day it left the show room floor.Thismeans opening the hood areaand removing oak leaves, pine needles and other decayed organic material prior to initial cleaning. I have had clients mention in the past that their AC is not workingeffectivelyandonlytofinddebrisclogging up the air ducts. By doing this you’ll streamline your cleaning process while saving valuable time.

8 Die Porsche Kassette | November 2011

Page 9: November 2011 Kassette

Another valuable tip I would like to share is helping my client think like a judge. Not Perry Mason, but acquiring the mind-set of the judges that inspect the vehicles at this prestigious event. The main idea of the concours is to promote the preservation of each marquee in its original state. One of the important common dominators I have discovered when it comes to winning is paying extra attention to how the car looked when it wasfirstpurchasedwithrespecttooriginality, authenticity, condition and knowing that cosmetic concerns are secondary. Every car that enters this event starts as being in near perfect condition. Points are deducted when the judges look for imperfection and sees what is lacking. Likewise, a mirror plug missing on a Porsche 930 turbo can be the different betweenfirstandsecondplace.Whenitcomesto cosmetics, the judges who are collectors themselves understand that the vehicle is meant to be driven and the finish of the car shouldbe consistence with its original assembly line appearance. If the finish shows rock chips, minor scratches, dents and dings then the judges will not over look them. If something should havebeenfixedandwasignored, thistoowilladd up to costly deductions. The judges would rather see that you made an attempt to correct the problem than none at all.

I shall conclude with common mistakes that often take place within the concours arena, as I mentioned previously, lack of knowledge of what the judges are looking for is costly. Something simple as not emptying the glove compartment is often overlooked. Everything begins with a plan and attempting to prepare and clean the car the day before the show will lead to embarrassment. The goal is to impact the judges without making it look like your trying to sell them a vehicle. I have seen many collectors focus 90 percent of their time polishing and waxing the car, but spend only 10 percent on what is relevant such as the pedal cluster, seat cushion crevasses and other obscure place that most individuals would not think of looking at. One last thing, if you really are concerned about winning then it is best you leave the shiny dressing products at home. The last thing a judge wants is grease on his hands after wiping the dash board or the tires that looked like they were painted with shellac.Rememberfirstimpressionscountandthat these tips will help you bring your prized automobile from good to great. What a great time of the year we are having in sunny south Florida. This weather does not last long so we are taking advantage of eating meals by the pool, picnics by the bay and just enjoying the moment. Many car enthusiasts are attending concours events around the state this month. Check out the Concourse Corner article by Fred Kohly with more information about becoming more

involved with the detailing of your car. GCR held their annual Porsches by the Bay Concours social at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. Look for full coverage of the event in our next issue. I would like to welcome several new sponsors to the Kassette this year. Thank you for your support and helping the club continue to improve what we offer to our members. This month we are being hosted by Kevin Wheeler at his shop, KMW Motorworks for a Tech Session, look for more events like this in our 2012 season. I will begin by saying that this party was a tremendous success. Total of 53 people attended. If you missed this party, you missed something epic. We have to do this again. It was so much fun that no one wanted it to end. I stopped the music at 12:00 pm and the party still went on!! The costumes, the food, the drinks, the people, the atmosphere; everything was perfect. Well, not everything … the weather was horrible. It was raining like I have never seen before, but still we had a great turnout even though the weather was not cooperative. Once you got into that party, no one remembered the rain…. Vivian Ortega, Ed Kohly and I got there early and started doing the decorations. Annie Ortega & family arrived a short time later to set up the music and helped with the decorating. This party was truly a joint venture. The room was beautifully decorated with pumpkins, skeleton lights, candles, jack-o-lanterns, candy and lots and lots of spider webs.

The costumes were hilarious and well thought out. It was a beautiful sight to see Michael Grant as a vampire, Diane Thoman as a nun (she was spanking everyone!!) Juan and Anna Maria Cardenas as the bride and groom, Alex Ortega as a pirate, Joyce Minnich as a skeleton and Gio Cardosa as Popeye, just to name a few. This party was tons of fun, laughter and dancing. Every time you looked around, you saw people having a great time. What made me the happiest though, is seeing Mike and Aileen Brennan dancing and laughing and feeling the energy and seeing the happiness radiating throughout that room. We even got a picture of Joyce on the chair dancing!! The music was just right. Gio is a master at what he does. He played all the favorites and lots of appropriate music throughout the night and had everyone on their toes. Prizes were awarded for best male costume (Alex Ortega as a Pirate – DE certificate). Best female costume (Sasha

Ortega as a 1920’s vixen – Autocross certificate)andbestcouple(JuanandAnnaMaria Cardenas as the bride and groom – Dinner for two at Briny’s Pub). In summary, I would like to say a special thanks to Mike and Aileen Brennan (owners of Briny Pub) for allowing us to have our party there. Gio Cardosa & Laz Ortega for the fantastic music and the fog machine. Annie, Vivian & Cathy Ortega, Christina Rodriguez and Ed Kohly for all your help with decorations, shopping and pulling this off. Dottie & Steve Kidd and Sherry & Roger Fabel for your ongoing help. It was because of these people and all the people that attended this event that this night was truly unforgettable.

CryoDetailing is the safest, most effective way to bring your vehicle's under-carriage, engine bay, and other components back to life. This technique will remove the harshest debris, yet won’t destroy soft rubber or electrical com-ponents.

CryoDetailing gets into the hardest to reach places, places that other clean-ing methods cannot touch. Great for restorations, concourse or daily driven vehicles! Any vehicle make or model can be treated!

Funnel CakesVegetable oil 1 tsp. baking soda1 egg ¾ tsp. baking powder2/3 c. milk ¼ tsp. saltPowdered sugar 1 ¼ c. all-purpose flour2 Tbsp. granulated Molasses or pancake syrupsugar

Heat oil (2 inches) to 375° in a 12 inch skillet or 3 quart sauce-pan. Beat remaining ingredients, except powdered sugar and molasses, until smooth.

Holding forefinger over end of funnel (the funnel should have tip opening ½ inch in diameter), pour about ½ cup batter into funnel. Drip batter, controlling flow with forefinger, into hot oil, swirling it into circles from center out. Fry until light brown, about 2 minutes on each side. Drain; keep warm. Repeat with remaining batter. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with molasses. Makes 3.

Stay-Crisp Waffles1 ½ c. sifted all-purpose flour ¾ c. dairy sour cream2 tsp. baking powder ¾ c. sweet milk½ tsp. soda ¼ c. lard or vegetable ¼ tsp. salt shortening, melted1 Tbsp. sugar ¼ c. butter, melted3 eggs, separated

Sift dry ingredients. Beat egg yolks, sour cream and milk. Add to dry ingredients, alternating with fats (cooled to room temperature). Stir until batter is smooth and free from lumps. Fold in egg whites, beaten stiff. Cook waffles according to directions for your particular waffle iron. Serve with syrup, honey, preserves, etc. Makes 4.

To use leftover batter: Store leftover waffle batter in refrigerator in covered jar. Before cooking, add 1 teaspoon baking powder dissolved in 1 tablespoon milk for each cup of batter. Cook as directed. If batter is still too stiff, add an extra tablespoon of milk.

These waffles can be varied by adding ½ cup of blueberries, currants, raisins, nuts or dates to batter before cooking. Also try ½ cup grated Parmesan or shredded Cheddar cheese added to batter before cooking.

These are fluffy, crisp waffles with enough body to hold up when topped with creamed chicken or meat.

2011 Motorist Choice AwardsPorsche Panamera Based on Survey of 72,000 Customers

ATLANTA – September 26, 2011 – The 2011 Porsche Panamera is the top “Head Turner” in the premium vehicle category, according to the sixth annual Motorist Choice Awards.

The Motorist Choice Awards, which combine analysis from bothAutoPacificand IntelliChoice, are designed to recognize vehicles that deliver a combination of high consumer satisfaction and low ownership costs over time. This year, AutoPacificand IntelliChoice grouped the winners into a collection of 15 popular lifestyle segments shoppers could easily identify with, including categories such as “Head Turner” and “People Mover.”

AutoPacific,anautomotivemarketingandproduction-consulting firm, performs anannual vehicle owner satisfaction survey in the U.S., with a record of more than 72,000 responses in 2011. This study solicits customer feedback on a recently purchased 2011 vehicle using 48 key attributes to cover the entire ownership experience, which is used to determine winners of the annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs).

Meanwhile, IntelliChoice monitors and adjusts costs of ownership for more than 1,800 vehicle models as the foundation of its Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards. The Motorist Choice Awards combine data analysis from both firmsinto one set of accolades, to showcase vehicles that earn high marks on both sets of criteria.

The awards were broken down into 15 unique categories defined by theneeds and usage sought by new vehicle buyers, and named appropriately based on recommendations from a panel of consumers. The firms then determinedwinners in the Popular and Premium brand groupings.

“The Motorist Choice Awards are designed to assist consumers by using

a categorization scheme other than traditional vehicle classes. Our research has shown that buyers often shop in more than one vehicle segment based on their needs and uses, rather than simply choosing a segment and then comparing models within it,” said George Peterson, presidentofAutoPacific.“Whetherbuyersare seeking a kid friendly, youthful, or fun to drive vehicle – we have a suggestion thatwillfittheirbudgetandneeds.”

In 2010, Porsche received the Motorist Choice Award for Best Premium Active Lifestyle Vehicle for the Porsche Cayenne, as well as the AutoPacific VehicleSatisfaction Award for Best SportsCar for the Porsche 911.

The 2011 Motorist Choice Award winners were announced on Sept. 22 at the Orange County International Auto Show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Tech Corner: Stoichiometric Point

The stoichiometric point is a term commonly used to describe the ideal fuel/air ratio in a combustion engine. The stoichiometric air-fuel ratio for gasoline is 14.7 to 1 by weight. Theoretically, at this ratio all of the fuel will be burned using all of the oxygen in the air. Unfortunately, our gasoline engines don’t run at this point all of the time. When we drive, the fuel/air mixture varies from the

ideal quite a bit. Sometimes the mixture can be rich (air-to-fuel ratio lower than 14.7) and sometimes it can be lean (air-to-fuel ratio higher than 14.7).

So, how can we tell when the engine is at its ideal stochiometric point, and better yet, how can we try to keep it there? In 1976 Bosch introduced what would eventually become one of THE most important technologies for reducing exhaust emissions: the Oxygen Sensor. Twenty years later (1996) Bosch had produced over 100 million of them.

Today, Bosch O2 sensors, are OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) on a wide variety of domestic, Asian and European cars, including Porsche.Ten years before the first Bosch O2 sensor, Porsche performed the first emissions test on a 911 (2-liter, 130 HP/6100 rpm). The results are on the following table, compared with the same test performed on a 2004 911S (3.8-liter, 355 HP/6600 rpm).

What is s a catalytic converter and how does it work?In chemistry, a catalyst is a substance that causes or accelerates a chemical reaction without itself being affected.

Most cats (for short) consist of a ceramic structure coated with a metal catalyst, usually platinum, rhodium and/or palladium. The idea is to create a structure that exposes the maximum surface area of catalyst to the exhaust stream, while also minimizing the amount of catalyst required, since the materials are extremely expensive. Some of the newest converters have even started to use gold mixed with the more traditional catalysts. Gold is cheaper than the other materials and could increase oxidation which makes for a more efficient cat.

There are three types of catalytic converters: 2-way, 3-way and 3-way + air.

The first catalytic converter – the 2-way converter -- was used on U.S. cars between 1975 and 1980. These cats oxidized unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into water and carbon dioxide.

The three-way converter, in addition to performing the same as its predecessor, reduces nitrous oxides into nitrogen and oxygen.

The 3-way + air converter performs the same function as the 3-way converter, but also injects air between the two internal catalysts which improves the oxidation of the converter and thus reduces emissions even better.

As you can see, the reduction in emissions is to the order of 95%! Porsche has come a long way.

This drastic reduction in emissions was not obtained exclusively by the use of oxygen sensors, but also by the addition of the catalytic converters and an ever-developing engine management system geared towards less emissions while increasing performance.

Most modern cars, including Porsches, are equipped with 3-way catalytic converters. This refers to the three regulated emissions it helps to reduce. The reduction catalyst is the first stage of the catalytic converter. It uses platinum and rhodium (precious and rare metals – hence the high cost of the cats) to help reduce the NOx (NO or N O2) emissions. When an NO or NO2 molecule contacts the catalyst, the catalyst rips the nitrogen atom out of the molecule and holds on to it, freeing the oxygen in the form of O2.

32 Die Porsche Kassette | November 2011

Page 33: November 2011 Kassette

The nitrogen atoms bond with other nitrogen atoms that are also stuck to the catalyst, forming N2. For example:2NO => N2 + O2 or 2N O2 => N2 + 2 O22NO => N2 + O2 or 2N O2 => N2 + 2 O2

The oxidation catalyst is the second stage of the catalytic converter. It reduces the unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by burning (oxidizing) them over a platinum and palladium catalyst. This catalyst aids the reaction of the CO and hydrocarbons with the remaining oxygen in the exhaust gas. For example:2CO + O2 => 2C O2

The third stage of conversion is a control system that monitors the exhaust stream, and uses this information to control the fuel injection system. An oxygen sensor is mounted upstream of the catalytic converter, meaning it is closer to the engine than the converter. This sensor tells the engine computer (ECU) how much oxygen (O2) is in the exhaust. The ECU can then increase or decrease the amount of oxygen in the exhaust by adjusting the air-to-fuel ratio. This control scheme allows the ECU to make sure that the engine is running at close to the stoichiometric point, and also to make sure that there is enough oxygen in the exhaust to allow the oxidization catalyst to burn the unburned hydrocarbons and CO.

Porsche has pioneered the engine management systems and the development of the VarioCam and subsequently the VarioCam Plus has greatly aided in the targets of emission reductions, fuel efficiency and power.

Porsche and other car manufacturers are constantly striving to perfect, not only the cats, but the complete engine management system to obtain greater reduction in emissions and better efficiency and thus power from their engines.

To learn more about emissions, catalytic converters and engine management systems and more, please visit my website at: WWW.PedrosGarage.com

Happy Porsche-ing, Pedro

The VarioCam Plus is a system that combines variable valve timing with a 2-stage lift on the inlet side. Essentially VarioCam Plus creates two engines out of one, switching seamlessly between them in response to the driver’s inputs. The VarioCam Plus improves responsiveness when starting from cold by raising the amount of cam lift and retarding timing helping to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.
