THE KBS has introduced a number of new postgraduate and undergraduate pro-grammes.

In 2010, inspired by the growing need within the aviation sector for specialised management education, the Kemmy Busi-ness School at UL is launching a Masters in Business Administration (Aviation Man-agement).

The programme has been designed to educate students from diverse disciplines within the airline, aviation and related asset leasing and financing sectors. It combines the traditional benefits of an MBA educa-tion with a particular focus on the avia-tion sector resulting in maximum value for participants and for employers within that sector.

The innovative, unique and flexible two-year block-release programme was designed jointly with a group of aviation industry experts and UL faculty. With an attendance requirement on campus averag-ing three days per month, scheduled well in advance, participation from any part of Ireland, or indeed overseas, is facilitated.

Participation in an aviation related inter-national workshop is an integral compo-nent of the programme and this is planned for Toulouse in September 2011.

The Bachelor of Business Studies by Flex-ible Learning admitted its first students in September 2009. This new and innovative programme was designed for students

who are unable to avail of the opportu-nity of studying on a full-time basis. The programme is delivered through a com-bination of online learning, workshops and tutorial sessions. The programme was also one of KBS programmes to qual-ify for limited funded places under the 2009 and 2010 Labour Market Activation programme which is aimed at re-skilling of Irish job-seeker’s.

The MSc in International Management and Global Business was also launched

in 2009 and has attracted a number of overseas students from various countries. A total of 41 students enrolled on this initial offering of the programme, which is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of management challenges in a global context.

Jim left school at 15 after the death of his father and qualified as a stonemason. He worked in the U.K. from the mid-1950s where he first became involved in social and political activism – experiences which were to influence his life’s work.

On return to Ireland in 1960 he became involved in the trade union movement serving on the stone mason’s union and becoming a member of the Executive of the Building and Allied Trade Union (BATU). This involvement was underpinned by a commitment to social justice and he frequently represented workers at industrial tribunals. Employers regarded him as a tough but principled and constructive union representative, who had a strong focus on the need to promote business and industry. Jim was pro-business but insisted on ethical standards and that business should operate within a social economy.

His political activism found expression in working class politics and he became a member of the Labour Party in 1962. He left the party in 1972 and subsequently founded

the Democratic Socialist Party (DSP) in 1982. In 1990, the DSP merged with the Labour Party, with Jim first becoming parliamentary party vice-chairman and eventually chairman of the Labour Party. Within the Dáil, he was a man of stature being an able, sincere and principled spokesperson with a special interest in promoting ethical standards in public life working for economic and social justice. Jim was strongly pro-European and supported Irish entry into the European Economic Community in 1973. He took principled and liberal positions on social issues such as birth control and divorce, which initially damaged him politically. In time these positions were to be embraced by the Irish state and he achieved electoral success. First elected to Dáil Éireann in 1981, he lost his seat in 1982 but was returned in 1987 and served until his death in 1997. Having been initially elected to Limerick City Council in 1974, he became Mayor of Limerick on two occasions, a role he served with great distinction.

Jim was a great believer in the role of education, a commitment reflected in his own life. Although largely self-educated, he obtained a Diploma in Adult Education from University College Cork. Jim supported the foundation of the National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) in the early 1970s, later to become the University of Limerick. His scholarly work was reflected in his founding of the Old Limerick Journal in 1979, a publication dedicated to chronicling Limerick’s history. The Journal was published in a style readily accessible to all, but founded on high-quality research and was respected and valued by professional historians. In addition to this work, Jim edited two books: the Limerick Anthology (1996) and the Limerick Compendium (1997). Jim also played an active role in contributing to Limerick’s cultural life and championed the work of local artists and writers, at a time when such support was limited.

From the Dean’s DeskTo mark the official opening of the Kemmy Business School (KBS), we are launching this first issue of the KBS Chronicle. The Chronicle is designed to be a key communications medium between the School and our key stakeholders – alumni, students, the business community, second-level schools, other business schools in Ireland and overseas and the public at large. It contains news, views and details of the range of activities and achievements by students, faculty and alumni of the KBS.

While the history of the Faculty of Business extends back to the foundation of the University of Limerick, then the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, in 1972 when there were 30 students enrolled on the Bachelor of Business Studies programme, the naming of the School after the late Jim Kemmy in 2003 and the donation of a significant ‘gift’ of €5m. marked a new beginning and identity for the Kemmy Business School.

The KBS is a dynamic and innovative business school with a focus on providing a first class business education that prepares graduates for fulfilling and rewarding careers in a variety of business functions and professions. The completion of the world class and well designed €22.5m. building in 2008 was a further milestone in our development and provides students with superb facilities including Ireland’s first simulated Trading Floor.

The KBS will be officially opened on Nov 5th, 2010 by Mr. Tony Killeen, T.D., Minister for Defence and this will be followed by a Distinguished Lecture on “Ireland’s Economic Condition” presented by Peter Sutherland, S.C. Peter Sutherland is a former Attorney-General and European Commissioner, was head of the World Trade Organisation for a period of time and in later years was Chairman of BP and is also Chairman of the London School of Economics.

The School is named after the late Jim Kemmy, local historian and politician, former Alderman and Mayor of Limerick. Jim was a quintessentially Limerick person, dedicated to improving the lot of his fellow citizens, champion of the underclass and a man with high principles. He believed in the value of education and especially ‘second-chance’ education. He favoured the development of businesses that embraced social as well as economic responsibilities, supported Ireland’s entry to the European Economic Community in 1973 and abhorred the political violence that dominated Northern Ireland for much of his working life, until his untimely death in 1997.

The KBS is academic home to almost 3,000 students and over 100 staff and offers a wide range of business and management programmes both on-campus and at external locations throughout Ireland. The School is focussed on meeting the education needs of the business community as well as preparing students for operating in the global business arena. There are already over 6,000 alumni of the School and many of these are based overseas. We are keen to connect with all our alumni and to progress the School’s ambition to be truly international. The granting of international accreditation to our BBS programme, to the MSc in Human Resource Management and to the Masters in Project Management are key stages in realising this ambition.
