From the Rabbi’s Desk

Rabbi Howard Gorin

Consider the plight of newly emancipated black slaves. Lacking the reference points of kinshipand culture, how did they answer the question, “Who am I?” After being abused for centuries, how did they go about creating a positive sense of self-identity?

Answer: They turned to the Bible. The story of the Exodus spoke to them. And no smallnumber of them began to identify themselves as Israelites, Hebrews or Jews.

Yvonne Chireau and Nathaniel Deutsch, in their introduction to Black Zion: AfricanAmerican Religious Encounters with Judaism, write:

“The roots of African American identification with, and transformation of, Israelite andJewish traditions are to be found in the central narrative of the Hebrew Bible: a lowly peopleis chosen by God, suffers slavery and exile, and is ultimately redeemed and returned to itsPromised Land. This story resonated profoundly with the African slaves and their descendantswho cried by the rivers of their own Babylon – America – during centuries of oppression andexile. Blacks have consistently offered their own liberatory exegesis of biblical traditions byemphasizing the chosenness of African Americans and the promise of redemption for theirsuffering.

“The various modes of black identification with Judaism and Jewish texts share a criticallyimportant element: they all subvert the racist image of blacks as a damned people, an imagecultivated over the years by white religious figures employing scriptural justification for slaveryand other forms of racist oppression.”

During the Great Migration in the early 20th Century – when large numbers of blacksoutherners moved to northern urban centers – many African American Jewish congregationswere established. For example, in 1919 Rabbi Wentworth Arthur Matthew founded Harlem’sCommandment Keepers Congregation. He told Harlem residents that they were descendantsof Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, exhorting them to return to their God.

The existence of these congregations raises many questions. Write Chireau and Deutsch:“Certainly one of the most vexing of these questions is whether one can even speak of a singleJudaism…. The identification of African Americans with and especially as Jews expands theparameters of this debate and highlights issues of race, ethnicity, and self-definition indetermining who is a Jew. If a group of African Americans who were raised as Christians forma new community and declare themselves to be Jews, does this act make them Jewish? Mustthey first be converted by one of the ‘official’ branches of Judaism?”

Too many white Jews are sadly “confident” that they know the answer. They are quick todismiss African American Jews as “not really Jewish.” But can we afford to be dismissive ofthousands of individuals who practice Judaism when American Jewry seems to be in a precipitousnumerical decline?

On November 30, a group of us will be traveling to Philadelphia to acquaint ourselveswith one of these congregations. We will experience the way they observe Shabbat and therebygain a better understanding of African American Jewish Culture. If you are interested inparticipating, please contact me: [email protected].

From the President’sPerspective

Ronald L. Rabin, M.D.

Yiddish music, Ladino music, Gospel music,American show tunes; what do they all have incommon? Any music-loving Tikvat Israelcongregant knows that these are but a few examplesof the wide repertoire of music brought to us byCantor Rochelle Helzner at the annual Cantor’sConcert. Each year has been a novel experience, areal pleasure and a solid fundraiser.

This year, we are trying something a bitdifferent. In contrast to the previous adult-oriented concerts, Cantor Helzner graciouslyagreed to try a new format oriented towardsfamilies, with the challenge of appealing tograndparents, parents and children of all ages.Hillary Berman, Cantor Helzner and theBoard of Directors are all very excited aboutthe upcoming “Helzner Happening” onSunday, December 2 at 4 p.m. Hannukah isearly this year, so the concert is really aHannukah Helzner Happening in the Hallon the Hill in the Holiday season.

Of course, what makes the “HelznerHappening” a Helzner Happening is that theRobyn Helzner Trio will be joining Hazzan Helznerfor the pre-Hannukah Hootnanny. According tono less an authoritative source than theRobyn Helzner website, “Robyn’s concerts foradults and children are a celebration in song.Robyn blends song, story, and lively audienceparticipation to bring each song to life. Hermagnetic presence lights up a stage. Performingas a soloist or together with the Robyn HelznerTrio, Robyn radiates a passion for Jewish musicand an enthusiasm that captivates her listeners.Trio members Dov Weitman on mandolin andguitar, and Matt Holsen on bass and keyboardcontribute to the group’s exciting vocal andinstrumental arrangements and create the Trio’ssignature sound.”

Because this is a family concert, we havelowered ticket prices accordingly.Sponsorships are also tailored to the family.Instead of a simple list, we offer parents andgrandparents the opportunity to greet theirchildren in the printed program that includesthe purchase of tickets for one family.

So fly the grandkids in for the weekend, convey to the cousins to climb in the car and cruiseto Rockville, corral the kids, nudge the neighborsand announce the affair! This is going to be a greatconcert and a wonderful afternoon.

THE EXECUTIVEBRANCH

Michael Grossman

I want to thank the congregation for its warmwelcome as I come on board. Starting a newposition is always a new adventure with newpeople to meet (oy, so many names toremember) and responsibilities to learn. Inthe coming months, we will have manyopportunities to work and learn together.

Susan Newman has received manyaccolades upon her retirement and I want toadd my thanks for taking the past two monthsto mentor me and teach me so many aspectsof this position. I wish her well in retirementand hope she keeps the phone nearby.

As Bob Dylan says “the times they area-changin’.” We are seeing other personnelchanges in the shul. Barbara Katz and RianneMelmed have both retired from our officestaff. Their combined service to thecongregation is greatly appreciated, but it istheir personal touches in the office that wewill miss more.

New faces are appearing though. AmySchneider and Debbie Segal have joined ouroffice staff as office assistant and bookkeeper, respectively. We look forward to quicklybuilding our new office staff. Together, weform the “Executive Branch” of the shul.

L’Shalom.

October was an exciting month! On October 1, we opened our doors to five toddlers in ourbrand new toddler class. This class has been designed to provide an age-appropriate enrichingJewish experience for children 18 months to 2 years. The teachers sing songs in Hebrew andsongs in English with Hebrew words woven throughout the lyrics, they sing the blessingsbefore eating, and celebrate Shabbat on Fridays. The toddler class has been a wonderfuladdition to our program.

During the fall holidays, we welcomed many special visitors to our classes. Rabbi Gorinshowed the children how we shake the lulav and etrog, taking time with each child to helpthem shake-shake-shake. Sam Gilston blew the shofar for each class. Cantor Helzner joined theECC families for “Pizza in the Hut.” Thank you to everyone who visited and made theholidays such a special time for the preschoolers.

The entire ECC attended the annual trip to Sharp’s Farm during Chol Hamoed Sukkot. The children learned about fruits and vegetables that grow in the fall, and about bees andhoney. They ran through a corn maze, picked a small cob of corn that will actually pop in themicrowave, and of course, they picked their very own pumpkin. I would like to thank all thevolunteers for driving and chaperoning this special event.

Here’s what November has on the calendar for the ECC.• Wednesday, November 7: The ECC will hold an open house for the community.

Families who wish to learn more about the ECC are invited to visit the classes and seeour fantastic school.

• Saturday, November 10: The ECC 4- year-olds will meet at the synagogue for aHavdalah PJ Party.

• Tuesday, November 20 at 9:30 a.m.: Thanksgiving Feast. The children will maketable decorations and cook some “kid-friendly” Thanksgiving treats. Parents arewelcome to join us, but it is not required. School will be closed Thursday, November22 and Friday, November 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Israel @ 60

Last month I mentioned Israel’s 1948“Declaration of Independence,” probablymore accurately referred to as the Declarationof the Establishment of the State of Israel. Itwas read and signed on the same date thatthe British pulled out their last troops fromPalestine. I also talked about an Americanconnection with the new State of Israel, andthe important role of Eddie Jacobson ofMissouri, a Jew and former business partnerof President Harry S. Truman. What I didnot cover was the unique role of elderstatesman (and scientist) Chaim Weizmann– and explain his mission in America. (I’vealways understood that David Ben-Gurionwas not exactly a “buddy” of Weizmann, did not truly want him around at the timeof statehood, and so Weizmann wound upin the United States playing the key role ofmaking the final argument that convincedour President Truman to recognize the Stateof Israel within hours of its “Declaration.”)

Please take a few moments to read thewording of the Declaration, nowprominently posted in our synagogue’slobby. Note the beautiful expressionscontained in the English text, and payspecial attention to the names of thesignatories at the bottom of the display. I’llhave more to say about Golda Myerson[Meir] in an upcoming column. Also,President Ron Rabin has requested thesynagogue’s Fine Arts Committee to makethe arrangements to display our exquisiteillustrated Hebrew version of theDeclaration in the lobby adjacent to Englishedition. I hope it will be available by thetime you read this column.

All of this gets me thinking aboutanother perhaps somewhat less famousAmerican – David (Mickey) Marcus, andhis major role in Israel’s War ofIndependence. As a former Army officer, Ican imagine what must have encouragedColonel Marcus to use his military experience(including combat during World War II inEurope) to contribute to the effort in Israel’sWar of Independence. World War IIcertainly had not solved the world’sproblems, and the Jews in 1947 Palestineknew that another major fight for survivalwould be coming! Later this year, our fifthgraders will be learning about COL Marcus.

To quote from our text, A Young Person’sHistory of Israel by David Bamberger, “Thecommander of the Jerusalem campaign [inthe 1948 War of Independence], ColonelDavid Marcus...discovered a footpath in thehills...out of sight of the Arabmachine guns. If that path couldbe widened, trucks with suppliesmight be able to reach Jerusalem. It was a last chance. Hundredsof laborers were rushed from TelAviv. Day and night they racedagainst time, laboring in thefiercest heat. Just two nightsbefore the ceasefire, the firsttrucks began the dangerous journey over themakeshift road. Slowly, carefully, theystrained up the mountain. At last they reachedtheir goal: Jerusalem. Food, water, andammunition arrived. The city was saved.”

COL Marcus was accidentally killed byan Israeli sentry. His funeral service wasconducted in Israel in June 1948. To learnmore about this story, get a copy of the MGMmotion picture, Cast A Giant Shadow. (It’savailable on DVD at Barnes & Noble.)According to MGM, it “powerfullydramatizes Israel’s heroic 1947-48 strugglefor independence.” The film covers Mickey

Marcus’ role in building an army capable ofwithstanding Israel’s Arab foes. “Mickeymakes the journey [from New York] andbegins transforming a ragtag undergroundarmy into a first-class fighting machine.”

One footnote: PresidentHarry S. Truman and future IsraelPresident Chaim Weizmannposed for a photograph inWashington, DC in May of1948. Weizmann, old, ill andhalf-blind, had made a longjourney from London and wassuccessful in convincing Trumanto support a new Jewish state. He

left with “a solemn promise that the UnitedStates would support the idea” of such a state.Between Jacobson and Weizmann, the effortwas a resounding success. The U.S. gaveofficial recognition to the State of Israel only12 minutes after the end of the British controlover the Mandate in Palestine, which wasjust after midnight at the conclusion of a mosteventful day – May 14, 1948.

BereavementCommittee SeeksNew Members

“May you and your loved ones be written in thebook of life.” This is the basic greeting of theHigh Holidays. The reality though is thateach member of this congregation can be amourner at any time. It will happen to all ofus.

The Chevra Kadisha (BereavementCommittee) is in need of additional members. The Chevra lends it support to those in needin the following ways:

• Advise congregants in making funeralarrangements

• Arrange and perform Tahara (ritualpreparation)

• Arrange for Shomrim before the funeralat the Synagogue

• Prepare a house of mourning prior tothe return from the cemetery

• Arrange for a meal of condolence formourner and immediate family upontheir immediate return from thecemetery.

• Coordinate shiva minyanim and supplythe shiva house with a minyan, davanersand siddurim.

We have been able to provide for thecongregation for the past 17 years, makingsure that we respond appropriately to ourbereaved. This is what we do!

Many of you already offer assistancewhen needed and we thank you for beingthere when called upon. I ask you and othersto consider being a part of our group. It is,after all a form of self-insurance.

We are especially in need of members tobe part of the men’s/women’s tahara group(s)as well as house preparation and first mealcoordination. Please contact David Gantz at301-460-4674 or [email protected].

The custom of leaving a small stone onthe monument when visiting the graveof a loved one fulfills the need to“communicate” with the deceased in atangible way. The small stone becomes acalling card which says, “I was here, Ithought about you, I love you and I missyou.”
