Похорон відбувся у середу 28 жовтня в 10.30 год зранку в Chapel of Re-flection з похованням на кладовищі Springvale. Родині висловлюємо щирі співчуття, а душу покійного поручаємо Вашим святим молитвам.

We share with you the sad tidings that on Friday 23th October, 2015 Mr. Nicholas Zerebni (Endeavour Hills) entered eternal life aged 87. He was born on 1st January 1928 in Detlak Derventa. His funeral was held on Wednesday, 28th October, at 10.30 am at the Chapel of Reflection with buri-al at Springvale Cemetery.

Praying the Gospel Lectio Divina

Lectio Divina is a Latin expression that

means “divine or sacred reading.” It consists of reading a passage from scripture, reflection and prayer. The process of reading and reflecting is a prayer. The scripture passages in this case are chosen from the Byzantine Gospel Lectionary

as used in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Re-flections will be chosen from various sources and identified as used.

Praying Lectio Today

Relax your body and sit straight, eyes

shut and feet on the floor. Then practice the fol-lowing four simple steps:

Read the assigned scripture passage and then read the brief reflection assigned to the passage you have read. Lectio.

Pray the passage by looking for a specific meaning that comes to mind as you read it again. Meditatio. Pick a word or sentence or idea that sur-

faces from the text. Perhaps the reading reminds you of a person, place or experience. If so pray about it. Compose your thoughts into a simple word or phrase. Oratio.

In silence, with eyes closed, focus on your breathing. Let your thoughts and feelings fade as you consider the images from the previ-ous step. Contemplatio.

This exercise may take 10 to 20 minutes.

The Twenty-third Week after Pentecost

Again this week we continue to pray with selections taken from the gospel of St Luke. The weekday readings (Monday to Friday) come from chapters 9 & 10 of the gospel. Discipleship is prominent in this set of readings. On Saturday the healing of the centurion’s servant turns our attention to outsid-ers. While on Sunday the parable of the rich man and Lazarus reminds us of the consequences of failure in conversion. All these gospel passages are ex-tracts from the Byzantine Gospel Lectionary as used in the Ukrainian Cath-olic Church. I have selected the regular daily readings for the purpose of prayer and reflection. Reflections have again been chosen from Fr Brendan Byrne’s commentary.

Monday 2nd

November (Luke 10:22-24)

Reflection

Primary in Luke’s presentation of Jesus is also the sense of a unique rela-tionship with God into which he wishes to draw human beings. That rela-tionship is the ultimate basis for the “hospitality” of God and for the joy that those who discover it experience. It lies at the heart of the kingdom of God as proclaimed by Jesus and is in this sense prior to any social or political program that the arrival of the kingdom entails—while not excluding, and in many respects requiring, radical socio-political transformation of present structures. The statement goes along with the constant insistence throughout the Gospel that the poor and marginalized are particularly the objects and beneficiaries of God’s saving design. It does not mean that education and theological formation, in particular, are barriers to relationship with God:

faith necessarity seeks understanding. But faith must go beyond understand-ing, into a realm where understanding falters and one is simply led, un-knowing, into the deeper mystery of God. Tuesday 3

rd November (Luke 11:1-10)

Reflection Luke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer begins by invoking God as “Father.” The disciples speak as members of the “household” or “family” of God into which they have been introduced by Jesus. They have heard Jesus thanking the “Lord of heaven and earth” as “Father” and have been assured of the blessedness they enjoy in the relationship with God that is now theirs. Now they are being taught to pray out of that relationship, calling God “Father” in their own turn. The community that prays the Lord’s Prayer is, then, a community very conscious of its privileged closeness to God. In short, it prays that the entire human race may enjoy the hospitality it has itself re-ceived from God.

November (Luke 11:9-13)

Reflection Why can one be certain that if one searches, one will find; if one asks, one will receive; if one knocks, the door will be opened? Because, if it is incon-ceivable that as human parents you would give your children a snake when they ask for a fish, or a scorpion when they ask for an egg; if, on the contra-ry, “evil’ as you are (that is, as human beings in comparison with the good-ness of God), you know how to give good and not evil things to your chil-dren, how much more will the Father of infinite goodness give good things

(here, the gift of the Holy Spirit) to you!

Thursday 5th

November (Luke 11:14-23)

Reflection In this part of the Gospel Jesus addresses the, as yet, unconverted crowds. In the way of a prophet, he summons them to conversion with warnings and denunciations. Alongside the crowds are those who represent the religious leadership—especially the Pharisees and lawyers. More and more explicitly members of these groups emerge as the antagonists of Jesus. But Jesus is that “stronger one,” who successfully attacks and overcomes the strongly armed and defended realm of Satan. The decisive battle is engaged; this is no time for hesitation or half-hearted adherence. The train of the kingdom of God is already leaving the station; decide once and for all whether you want to climb on board!

Friday 6th

November (Luke 11:23-26)

Reflection In the struggle between good and evil, change does not come without con-flict—not only opposition from others, but internal turmoil. To heal, Jesus had to expel the demon from the man. The images of Beelzebub, divided kingdoms, and overcoming the strong man in his fortress are metaphors of combat. Internallyone may expel the demon only to have it return with sev-en more. What does one do when light has shined into one’s soul and the light within id darkness?

Saturday 7th

November (Luke 8:16-21)

Reflection If the lamp of faith is lit in a human life, it is not meant to be covered or hidden but to keep on shining and shed light. When persons have responded positively to the word, God’s grace invades their lives ever and ever more abundantly; an initial refusal cuts things off from the start. This sequence ends with a report about Jesus’ mother and brothers trying to reach him. Je-sus’ response is not a tribute to his mother’s faith; nor on the other hand, is it a put down or slight. Jesus uses the occasion of his family’s approach to make a wonderful point: those who hear the word that he is preaching and keep it in the way the parable of the sower commends, make up his new family.

Sunday after Pentecost (Luke 8:26-39)

Reflection Strange as many of its features are, the scene invites us to enter its drama. With which character or group should we identify? The disciples who simp-ly observe? The townsfolk who cannot cope and ask Jesus to go away? Or can we indeed find something of our story in the plight of the possessed person himself? Each of us has demons that rend and tear at us and make us want to dwell “in the tombs” rather than in the household of life.

“On Sunday, Nov 22, the AGM (Annual General Meeting) of Noble Park will take place after the 10.00 am Liturgy and Panakhida. This is important as a new President has to be elected. All are urged to attend and all are welcome of course”.

It was only last Monday (Oct 26) that we finally heard that one of our faithful parishioners, Nicholas Zerebni, died on the previous Friday, Oct 23, to be buried by a Catholic priest at Springvale Cem-etery beginning with a service at the Chapel of Reflection at 10.30 am on Wednesday, Oct 28, with burial at the cemetery.
