Saints Triumphant All creation is subject to frustration because of sin. Death is the most fearsome foe
we all must face. But because Jesus rose from death, we can be sure he conquered
it! Because he rose from his grave, we will rise from ours. The Saints, the believers -
we will be triumphant in Christ Jesus. This is real encouragement!
Meditation Before Worship Blessed are the saints of God; they are bought with Christʹs own blood. They are
ransomed from the grave; life eternal they shall have. With them numbered may
we be here and in eternity. (CW 394:1)
Personal preparation for Holy Communion can
be found in the front of the hymnal on page 156.
St. Mark’s is a member of the
Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod

Preservice music will be used to help in quiet preparation for worship.

(10:30) CHOIR SINGS For All Your Saints, O Lord
Christian Worship 555
Please stand
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: (sung) Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS
M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins
to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant
us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I
have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what
is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment
both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in
my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
4
LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie)
C: (sung) Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy
on us.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son
to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ
and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and
of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
C: (sung) Amen.
M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
GLORY BE TO GOD (Gloria in Excelsis)
(music can be found in the front of the hymnal on page 16)
C: (sung) Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give
thanks to you, for your great glory, O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Fa-
ther almighty. O Lord, the only bego4en Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God,
Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sin of the world; have
mercy on us. You take away the sin of the world; receive our prayer. You
sit at the right hand of God the Father; have mercy on us. For you only are
holy; you only are the Lord. You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are
most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: The Lord be with you.
C: (sung) And also with you.
M: Let us pray.
Almighty God and Savior, you have set the final day and hour when we shall
be delivered from this world of sin and death. Keep us ever watchful for the
coming of your Son that we may sit with him and all your holy ones at the
marriage feast in heaven; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: (sung) Amen.

We Listen to God’s Word
FIRST LESSON Daniel 12:1-3 (NIV)
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise.
There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning
of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is
found wrien in the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the
dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and ev-
erlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the
heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever
and ever.”
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 118
Page 108 in the front of the hymnal
SECOND LESSON 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NIV)
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those
who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who
have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we be-
lieve that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who
are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who
5
6
have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with
a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call
of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still
alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore en-
courage one another with these words.
VERSE OF THE DAY Revelation 7:15a (NIV)
M: Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in
his temple. Alleluia.
C: (sung) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Please stand for the highlight of the service: the Gospel.
GOSPEL John 5:25-29 (NIV)
After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:
C: (sung) Glory be to you, O Lord!
25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead
will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.26 For as
the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in
himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of
Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their
graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is
good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be
condemned.
M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: (sung) Praise be to you, O Christ!
CONFESSION OF FAITH: THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally bego4en of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
bego4en, not made, of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The members of St. Mark’s have joined together to spread God’s message both in this com-
munity and around the world. If you are a visitor, please do not feel obligated to partici-
pate in the offering. You are our guests, and we thank you for giving us the opportunity
to share God’s Word with you! Please take a moment to sign our friendship book.

DIALOGUE OF REMEMBRANCE
(During the second part of the responsive reading, the minister will read the names of loved ones
who have departed this life and entered eternal glory. After each set of names, a bell will be rung.)
Minister: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God created
man in his own image, and gave them the opportunity to worship Him
freely by not eating from the Tree of Knowledge. But Adam and Eve lost
God’s image when they listened to the devil and decided to eat from that
tree. They plunged into turmoil, guilt, and despair. God’s message to them
was clear:
Congregation: Dust you are, and to dust you will return.
M: Adam and Eve had children. Those children were NOT born in the image of
God, but were born in the image of Adam and Eve. We, too, are children of
Adam and Eve.
C: Dust we are; to dust we will return.
M: But God would not leave things in that fashion. He promised a Savior to Ad-
am and Eve. That Savior became “dust,” born in Bethlehem, crucified, laid
in a grave. But death could not hold Him! And because it could not hold
Him, it cannot hold you either.
C: Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their
graves will hear his voice and come out.
M: Dust we were, but we will be raised in glory and honor!
C: So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is
perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in
glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power.
All sing: For all the saints who from their labors rest, (CW 551)
All who their faith before the world confessed,
Your name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!
10
M: I am resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though
he dies;
C: And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. (John 11:25-26)

M: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things
above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
C: Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1-2)

M: I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the
earth.
C: And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
(Job 19:25-26)

M: Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or
to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.
C: We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will
bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. (1 Thessalonians
4:13-14)
All sing: You were their rock, their fortress, and their might;
You, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight
And in the darkness drear their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia!

M: Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
C: I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:42-43)

11
M: Be faithful, even to the point of death.
C: And I will give you the crown of life. (Revelation 2:10)
All sing: But then there breaks a yet more glorious day:
The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Special prayers or intercessions may follow.
LORD’S PRAYER
C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your
will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. For-
give us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the
glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
The Sacrament At St. Mark’s we practice the custom of Close Communion, inviting to our altar only
confirmed members of our church body, the WELS, and of those in fellowship with
us. We do this because Communion is also a sign of Christian unity, based upon agree-
ment on the doctrines of the Bible. This is not an insult to our Christian brethren in other
denominations, but a recognition of differing church teachings. We, with all Christians,
look forward to the day when we will all sit together in peace at the marriage feast of the
Lamb. (See 1 Corinthians 10:17 and 1 Corinthians 11:27-29)

If you wish to follow along with the music for the communion liturgy, it begins on page
21 in the front of the hymnal.
12
Minister: The Lord be with you.
Congregation: (sung) And also with you.
M: Lift up your hearts.
C: (sung) We lift them up unto the Lord.
M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
C: (sung) It is good and right so to do.
M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give
you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Je-
sus Christ, our Lord, who preserves his Church to the end of time when he
will come again as king to judge all people and take his own to glory. There-
fore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy
name and join their glorious song:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus)
C: (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts; heav’n and earth are
full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is
he, blessed is he, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosan-
na, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when
he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take
and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of
me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from
it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for
you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remem-
brance of me.”
13
M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: (sung) Amen.
O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (Agnus Dei)
C: (sung) O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have
mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the
world; grant us your peace. Amen.

Two New Volunteer Opportunities! Would either of these positions match up with your time and talents?
Food Shelf Volunteers The Ladies Guild would like to revive efforts to collect donations for the Be-
midji Community Food Shelf. We plan to highlight one item each month
that is needed. We are looking for one or two volunteers who would be
willing to deliver the donated items to the Food Shelf on a regular basis
(monthly?). If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please talk to
Pat Berget.
Thrivent Grant Coordinator The Board of Stewardship is looking for a Thrivent Grant Coordinator. This
volunteer would keep a list of Thrivent members in our congregation who
are eligible to apply for the $250 Action Grants, promote the use of grants
for appropriate events, connect event planners with individuals on the list,
and assist as needed in the application process. Debra Newell is willing to
help this volunteer learn all about the Thrivent Action Grants. If you would
like to volunteer for this position, please talk to Doug Kranich.

Dave Pfeiffer’s mail box. Thanks, this will save the expense of ordering more
copies.
ADVENT WREATH
This Advent season as a part of the C18 materials, our synod will make daily fam-
ily devotions available online. These devotional materials will involve utilizing
an Advent wreath. If your family does not have one, you might consider purchas-

you have a wreath, but need some new candles. Northwestern Publishing House
has these items available. (www.nph.net)
