ENGLEHART — Students at Englehart High School (EHS) are on track to go further and faster now.

The running track at the school now has a new asphalt surface with a fresh coat of paint identifying lane lines.

There are four lanes around the 400-meter regulation size track and five lanes for the 100-metre distance.

“This is the fastest track around. It is faster because it’s harder. We are out here five days a week practicing and the runners just love it. I had 25 kids out for the team this year,” said EHS teacher/cross-country running coach Mike Anderson.

He said the old surface was made up of crushed limestone materials and had

outlived its purpose.A local contractor throughout the summer months did the work just in time for

the fall running season.The new surface will extend the running season as the runners “can get out

about three weeks earlier (in the spring). Before it was wet and we didn’t want to make indentations in the track. This track is so much better,” noted Anderson.

He mentioned during the resurfacing process they found out the former track wasn’t regulation size.

“It was actually 382 metres. It is now regulation size,” he said.The new surface is expected to last several years, thus ensuring the future of

running at EHS.“Even the elementary school kids are using the track. We anticipate this helping

us with our overall training.”
