Focus on the Future fundraising campaign for the Share Medical Center Foundation (SMCF) is underway to take advantage of an Oct. 4 matching grant of up to $500,000 from the Charles Morton Share Trust, according to information released this week from SMCF.

Steve Knox, Chairman of SMCF, announced the fundraiser to about 60 Foundation supporters which included representatives from Alva, Cherokee, and Waynoka during an Oct. 27 dinner at the Runnymede in downtown Alva.

“You have been invited here tonight because someone on the Foundation board recognized you as a supporter of Share Medical Center (SMC), a person of influence in your community, or both,”

Knox remarked. The dinner was specifically planned

to identify potential leaders for the Foundation’s Focus on the Future campaign, Knox said. After the dinner, Knox assured the group of two things, “First, we aren’t going to keep you here much longer, and second, we are not going to ask you for money, tonight.”

Knox then indicated that the Foundation was seeking something considerably more important from the group - their time and their influence.

At the end of the evening, attendees were asked to complete a contact card indicating their willingness to help.

No one declined to help.Printed materials indicated SMC has

been engaged in $3.7 million worth of initiatives related to hospital renovations, service expansion and start-up expenses, charity care, other contractual obligations, and governmental mandates including Electronic Health Records (EHR).

In recent months, SMC has implemented many cost containment and revenue enhancement measures to overcome such significant financial challenges. These measures, combined with over $1.0 million in grants and donations, have positioned SMC and the Foundation within $1.0 million of funding the aforementioned initiatives.

The grant from Share Trust was requested primarily to help SMC obtain

and implement EHR.The campaign, if successful, will help

ensure state-of-the-art technology for SMC, including EHR which is mandated by Medicare.

Foundation Executive Director, Kelly Parker stated, “EHR is one of the largest initiatives the healthcare system has ever seen in terms of scope and cost. Within the next three years, EHR will impact virtually every healthcare provider practicing in the United States.”

“This [EHR] is a multi-million dollar project and SMC is already committed to it for $2.0 million, just to meet minimum requirements,” Parker added. Total costs for implementation are projected in excess of $3.5 million.

SMC plans to share its EHR technology with other providers in the area that are interested in cost sharing opportunities.

With the $500,000 match from Share Trust, the $1.0 million objective is two dollars closer to being met with every dollar raised.

The Share Trust matching pledge went into effect on November 1, 2011. Knox reminds interested individuals that there may be significant tax advantages for supporting this campaign.

For tax guidance, please speak to your financial advisor or contact Steve Knox at 580.327.2552. Non-tax, campaign-related questions may be directed to either Knox or Kelly Parker at 580.430.3371.

By Roger McKenzieCrescent Services, a company do-

ing work associated with the oil and gas boom in Alfalfa County, had their com-pany hands slapped Monday during the Alfalfa County Commissioners meeting.

The company submitted a road cross-ing permit request for District 2 and was refused by District 2 Commissioner Chad Roach because a check for the fee did not accompany the request.

Crescent Services already owes the county approximately $7,000 for un-paid permits it has received. It also owes another approximate $1,500 for a road crossing where the road had to be cut, a more extensive, and expensive, opera-tion than the boring permit which was granted.

Crescent Services also submitted three road crossing permits for District 1 which were approved because a check for the fees accompanied the request.

In all, the commissioners approved 11other road crossing permit requests in addition to the three it did grant for Crescent Services. All but three of the requests were for District 1—from Atlas

By Yvonne MillerThe South Barber Board of Educa-

tion discussed football helmets, a soft-ball cooperative agreement and more at their November meeting Monday night which lasted just over two hours.

All board members attended includ-ing: President Kent Swartz, Michael An-derson, Janet Robison, Dana Roark, Bob Schrock, Deb Helfrich and Jeff Black. Superintendent Brad Morris also sat at the table with board clerk and district secretary Julie Johnson.

Athletic Equipment DiscussionAfter routine business, Tyler Wood-

row with Lou’s Sporting Goods of Wichita made a 30 minute presentation about football helmets. This came after concern over student concussions and individuals wanting to purchase their own helmets that give optimum protec-tion to the player.

First off, Woodrow said, “There is no concussion-proof helmet.” He brought a variety of helmets to make his point. He said the same “drop test” is done for all helmets – one of every 100 helmets is dropped.

He recommends keeping helmets clean, sanitized and inspected – a ser-vice he provides. He also said there is no certification for helmets beyond 10 years old. Some of South Barber’s helmets are from the 1990s.

After lengthy conversation, the board agreed to keep their athletic equipment in good condition and replace at the recom-mendation of the coaches as is custom-ary. They also decided they will allow students to use school-issued equipment

only, Superintendent Morris confirmed. Softball Cooperative Discussion As discussed months ago, the board

agreed to a softball cooperative agree-ment with Medicine Lodge High School. This was at the request of freshman Morgan Myers’s parents Mike and Julie Myers. Morgan is a dedicated softball play who plays with a traveling team in the summer.

Morris said Medicine Lodge wanted to add to the two-year cooperative agree-ment. That addition is that if South Bar-ber has three or more girls participate in softball, they would pay a percentage of the supplemental coach salary.

The board unanimously agreed to that addition for the two-year agreement.

Before the board voted, Helfrich asked, “How do we justify making cuts in our assistant coaches and pay for this?” Speaking of the previous budget cuts the board had to make, she said, “We have our own athletic programs to pay for.” Helfrich said she wasn’t op-posed to Morgan playing softball, just wanted to be fair to all South Barber stu-dents.

Morris said after Helfrich’s com-ments that the Myers are willing to do-nate money for the supplemental salary if needed – so there is no expense to the South Barber district. The superinten-dent had called officials to make sure the parents’ donation would be legal.

Superintendent Talks Finances and More

Morris said state revenue projections are favorable. The Capital Update re-port shows that tax collections for 2012

should increase by 3.5 percent. That equates to more than 6 billion (which is an increase of $205 million from last projection). For 2013, the projection is for the state to take in $6.3 billion in tax-es, an increase of $293 million over the current fiscal year.

Morris said the vo-ag/jr hi building roof had a couple leaks that will be re-paired. A new HVAC unit is being re-placed in that building that serves teach-er Melva Armbruster’s room.

The superintendent said the South Barber Recreation Commission voted last week to donate $10,000 to help with repair costs to the high school track. On behalf of the district, Morris said thank you for the support.

More Board BusinessThe board held three separate execu-

tive sessions with no action taken after any of the sessions.

One of those was with a high school student and their parents who met with the board about five minutes.

Another session lasted a total of 15 minutes and was to discuss non-elected personnel matters. The third session was also 15 minutes to discuss non-elected personnel matters.

Payment of current bills totaling $439,336.78 was approved.

Board approved some financial moves regarding bus routes for Pre-K students. Because the route was going to Hardtner and Hazelton, board approved a second route.

Board agreed to pay a bus driver $2900 and $500 for a paraprofessional to ride and help the students for the sec-ond route.

A clerical item was approved regard-ing health care benefits. The cost for one employee is $5,618. Those benefits for employee Delores Diel will be moved to the Contingency Fund (instead of the general fund) for the 2011-12 school year.

Reporting from the Site Council meeting, Principals Marcia Cantrell and Fred Gillig gave updates on the council’s investigation into school drug-testing. They are learning about independent testing companies, costs, how students who tested positive are helped, etc.

By Lynn L. MartinThis was emailed to me by my Kansas

sister, Judy Doering. I have not tested all of these uses but I bet it works.

WD-40 – Who knew! I had a neighbor who bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red

all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do....probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I’m impressed! WD-40 who knew?

‘Water Displacement #40’.The product began from a search for a

rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a ‘water displacement’ compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their Atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you. When you read the ‘shower door’ part, try it. It’s the

Duct tape and WD-40 are all you need to get along in life

first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It’s a miracle! Then try it on your stove top. It’s now shinier than it’s ever been. You’ll be amazed.

WD-40 Uses: 1. Protects silver from tarnishing. 2. Removes road tar and grime from

cars. 3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings. 4. Gives floors that ‘just-waxed’ sheen

without making them slippery. 5. Keeps flies off cows. (I love this

one!) 6. Restores and cleans chalkboards. 7. Removes lipstick stains. 8. Loosens stubborn zippers. 9. Untangles jewelry chains. 10. Removes stains from stainless

steel sinks. 11. Removes dirt and grime from the

barbecue grill. 12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden

pots from oxidizing. 13. Removes tomato stains from

clothing. 14. Keeps glass shower doors free of

water spots. 15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic

and marble floors. 16. Keeps scissors working smoothly. 17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on

vehicles and doors in homes. 18. It removes black scuff marks from

the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn’t seem to harm the finish and you won’t have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.

19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!

20. Gives a children’s playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.

21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers...

22. Rids kids’ rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.

23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.

24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.

25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.

26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.

27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.

28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.

29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.

30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.

31. Removes splattered grease on stove.

32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.

33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs. 34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony

(they hate the smell). 35. Removes all traces of duct tape. 36. Folks even spray it on their arms,

hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain. 37. Florida’s favorite use is: ‘cleans

and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.’

38. The favorite use in the state of New York – WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.

39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it’s a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing is not allowed in some states.

40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.

41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.

42. Also, if you’ve discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!

43. If you spray WD-40 on the distributor cap, it will displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

P.S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

The options added about $16,500 to the cost, which was still lower than the next low bid of almost $224,000. The county will pay for the machine in 84 monthly pay-ments.

An interlocal agreement for 2012 be-tween the county and Civil Engineering District #8 for engineering services was approved, as were a number of routine items, including minutes, maintenance and operations warrants, miscellaneous monthly reports, and the consumable items report.

By Yvonne MillerIt only took about an hour for the

South Barber community to raise an es-timated $40,000 at the FFA Work Auc-tion a week ago Tuesday evening.

“What awesome support from the community...I never dreamed that we would raise that much money!” first-year FFA Advisor Amanda Worthington said. “South Barber is very fortunate!”

FFA members served the public a meal of burgers and calf fries before the auction, conducted free gratis by several area auctioneers.

Each FFA member individually climbed atop a metal ladder/stand as they were auctioned to the highest bid-der. Even Ms. Worthington went on the auction block, bringing $1,100. A few individuals sold for a high of $2,200 in this possibly record-breaking year.

The money pays for the FFA Chap-ter’s activities throughout the year from attending state and national conventions to community service projects, a Wash-ington Leadership Conference, a vo-ag vehicle, etc.

By Jim StoutGroundbreaking is 10 a.m. today for the new motel on

the Alva industrial park site east of town, according to an announcement Tuesday from Kingson Christian.

Christian declined to give the name of the hotel chain associated with the development, but said it would be clas-sified as a luxury facility with 60 rooms, pool, hot tubs, fitness center, hot breakfast and pool. He noted the facility would have a meeting hall capable of seating 150 people including a built-in sound system and PowerPoint system so a speaker could simply plug in his or her laptop and start the show.

The structure will be three stories high, Christian said, and will be the culmination of a seven-year dream for him. Mrs. Christian operates the Ranger Inn, he said.

Christian’s facility will be next door east of another mo-tel announced last month, but no groundbreaking has been set for it.

South Barber High School teacher Meagan Masters directs “Done to Death” with performances by BL veterans and some newcomers that will all make you laugh.

NEED CASH FOR CHRISTMAS?

By Ethan WhartonTimberlake’s seniors accounted for

48 points in the Tigers’ dominating 56-0 shutout of a 5-5 Maud team on Friday in Helena. The Tigers versus the Tigers game was the opening round of the Class C state playoffs.

The story was Timberlake’s com-plete domination Friday night. They were able to move the ball easily against Maud and held the visitors to very few yards when they had the ball. The Tim-berlake defense allowed Maud less than 60 yards on offense and produced two points on a safety.

The seniors stepped up on Friday night. Stetson Buller had a great night offensively. Buller scored three touch-downs—on the opening play with a 46 yard run, a 32 yard rush on the second possession and a 57 yard run on Tim-berlake’s fifth possession. He led all ball carriers with 167 yards rushing.

Logan Campbell scored six points on a nine yard run on Timberlake’s third possession and added another touch-down on its sixth possession. Campbell also ran for a nine yard TD.

Quarterback Coy Troutt had the lon-gest touchdown of the night with a 60

Timberlake wins easily toadvance in state playoffs

yard TD run. Troutt also completed 66 percent of his passes through the air.

The other senior produced points came on two-point conversions. Buller, Brandon Severin, Mitchell Ballard, and Campbell each had a reception for two points. Troutt ran for two points, as well.

The team’s other eight points came from a sophomore. Braden Seaman scored the game’s final points when he scrambled for a 19 yard TD and then

scored the two point conversion by run-ning up the middle.

Timberlake is now 9-1 on the year, while Maud finished at 5-6. The Tigers from Helena face a much more difficult challenge this Friday in their road to the gold ball when they travel to Temple to take on the undefeated Tigers at 7 p.m. The Oklahoman ranks Timberlake num-ber two in Class C, while Temple is just a notch lower at number three.

Timberlake’s Stetson Buller (10) picks up a block from Logan Campbell (33) to get in for a touchdown. Buller had a three touchdowns in the first round win over Maud Tigers 56-0. Photo By Ethan Wharton
