A Message From Our Pastor

“Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.” (MK 12:41)

This is an interesting moment, Jesus Christ watching the people and doing nothing. Is this true? Christ in not passive in this moment. Actually, he is very actively looking at the hearts of the people. He sees those with their biggest secrets. In his eyes, everyone presents themselves as who they are deep inside. We can play games with ourselves by putting on a mask that covers our mistakes or faults so no one will see the truth. But we cannot deceive God. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows how generous or greedy our hearts are and he knows when our ego keeps us from being good. God, who owns everything, knows how much we give from our spiritual poverty and he also knows how much we are attached to this world.

In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

Dear Friends in Christ, The National Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) will take place in our diocese the weekend of November 17/18, 2018. Your support of this collection brings change to communities across the country and empowers those living in poverty to transform the places they live into reflections of the Kingdom of God. Your support goes a long way in creating communities that are more just and welcoming to those who live trapped in the cycle of poverty. In addition to making an impact nationally, those living in poverty in our own diocese are empowered through the 25 percent share of the collection that stays here. For more than 45 years, CCHD has addressed the problem of poverty by attacking its root causes and funding community projects that promote independence as a means of finding a permanent end to poverty. It might surprise you to know that 43 million Americans, including one in five children, live below the poverty line. Many of these are considered “working poor,” which means that they work but do not make enough money to cover essentials like housing, health care, child care, and food. Your support of this collection makes a difference for people living in poverty across the United States. By supporting this collection, you are giving those on the margins a hand up, not a hand out. Please be generous. If you would like more information about the collection and those it supports, visit www.usccb.org/cchd/collection. Thank you for joining us to work on the margins.

has been conquered in Christ, may be active in defending His gift of life.

St. Elizabeth’s Pantry In Douglas County, 10% of our neighbors must choose between paying the rent, heating their home, or feeding their children. Our parish’s pantry is open to individuals and families twice per month, enabling visitors to “shop” for non-perishable foods, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Most of our visitors are the working poor who struggle making ends meet. A few are transient homeless. All of our visitors are grateful! How can you help? Volunteer! Staff the pantry. Sort food donations. Host a food drive. Donate! Purchase extra non-perishable foods. Give a monetary gift. For more information, please contact Jean Henry at [email protected] or 201-910-1970.

We will have some fun activities, then we will watch and discuss an episode from the acclaimed marriage enrichment series Beloved: Finding Happiness in Marriage. Assisted Listening Devices for Hearing-Impaired

This is to provide information to help people with hearing difficulties at Mass.

Pax Christi has a wireless sound system that is used in the main worship space. This system can be used in conjunction with certain devices by those with hearing difficulties in order to improve their participation in the Mass or other services.

The sound system is compatible with the Williams Sound FM receiver PPA R-37. This receiver can be used with a 3.5mm stereo/mono jack to accommodate stereo or mono low impedance earphones or headphones. It has a clip that allows it to be attached to a belt or waistband. The receiver is compatible with any transmitter that broadcasts in the range of 72-27MHz.

For individuals who wear hearing aids with the T-coil capability, the Williams Sound neck loop NKL001 can be used with the receiver. The neck loop is worn like a lanyard and connects to the receiver via a 3.5mm jack. This provides excellent reception.

The receiver and neck loop can be purchased locally from: ADCO Hearing Products, 4242 S. Broadway, Englewood / 303-794-3928 / adcohearing.com

This is not an audiology practice. It has an array of quality products related to hearing. It was recommended by the Williams Sound representative. Williams Sound (aka Williams AV) is a manufacturer and distributor of audio products.

The devices can be purchased online as well. One would have to do a search for dealers, availability, and prices. I am not familiar with any other brands of receivers.

Thank you to parishioner, John Alfeld, for providing this information. Please contact the parish office with questions.

14th Annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive The Knights of Columbus are collecting donations through November 16th for Pax Christi's 14th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Basket Food Drive. Last year, Pax Christi Parishioners successfully donated over 500 Thanksgiving dinners to families in need throughout Colorado!

The Knights will be signing up volunteers for food donations after each Mass. Please reserve Saturday, November 17th for families to join the Knights to assemble and deliver food baskets to various charities in Colorado.

There are two ways to donate: Purchase your own ingredients (see shopping list) and assemble the dinner for direct delivery on November 17th. Or make a suggested donation of $50 to the Knights.

We are approximately 300 baskets short of our goal. Please consider making a basket or monetary donation.

Go to: http://bit.ly/PaxThanksgiving for more information on how to donate and items needed.

Funeral Coordinator Needed The coordinator needs to be a person who is comfortable interacting with church and pastoral staff, funeral home professionals, and bereaved family members; a person who is detail-oriented and possesses good time management skills. Duties are to assist family and funeral home professionals. Time Commitment is approximately 3 hours on day of the funeral Mass. Includes arrival at church one hour before Mass start time, one hour during Mass, and approximately one hour clean-up. Contact Joanne in the parish office if interested at 303-799-1036 or [email protected]. Thank you for considering this important ministry.

Fifty years ago, Pope Paul VI released Humanae Vitae, July 25, 1968, an encyclical on marital love, responsible parenthood, and artificial contraception.

Until the end of 2018, we’d like to offer you one significant quote each week of this very short encyclical that you can find on the Vatican website by Googling Humanae Vitae.

Observing the Natural Law II. 11 Conjugal act is “noble and worthy”

“New life is not the result of each and every act of sexual intercourse”

The sexual activity, in which husband and wife are intimately and chastely united with one another, through which human life is transmitted, is, as the recent Council recalled, "noble and worthy.'' (11) It does not, moreover, cease to be legitimate even when, for reasons independent of their will, it is foreseen to be infertile. For its natural adaptation to the expression and strengthening of the union of husband and wife is not thereby suppressed. The fact is, as experience shows, that new life is not the result of each and every act of sexual intercourse. God has wisely ordered laws of nature and the incidence of fertility in such a way that successive births are already naturally spaced through the inherent operation of these laws. The Church, nevertheless, in urging men to the observance of the precepts of the natural law, which it interprets by its constant doctrine, teaches that each and every marital act must of necessity retain its intrinsic relationship to the procreation of human life. Liturgy – Are You In It? The sign of the Cross. The sign of the cross is one of the most common signs that we use in our life. It begins and finishes our prayers, we used it for blessings, and during the liturgy. What is the meaning of this sign in the Liturgy?

After the priest takes his place at the beginning of the Mass, he says the trinitarian formula: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All members of the Holy Assembly make the sign of the Cross and say Amen. We have three elements that are expressed in this sign.

1. This sign and the call of the Holy Trinity expresses our adhesion and affiliation to Christ through baptism. When we received this sacrament, the priest called the names of the Holy Trinity and poured water on us. We gather for the Mass because we are baptized. We are here because of communion with the Holy Trinity that was established in the sacrament of Baptism. We participate in the life and love of our God. Every Eucharist continues the work of salvation that began during our Baptism.

2. The second element is enclosed in the sign itself and the words we say. It is the truth about the passion and death of Jesus Christ who we celebrate in the Holy Mass. “Whenever you eat this bread, then, you drink this cup, you are proclaiming the Lord’s death until he comes again.” (1 Cor 11:26). The Holy Mass is the mystery of our salvation. We make the sign of the Cross to remember that surrounding the Altar we surround the Cross, His empty tomb – Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

3. The third element represents the truth that the sacrifice of praise, thanksgiving, and prayers of community all happen in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We give thanks to God, the Father, through his Son, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit. We call this a trinitarian dimension of the Eucharist. “… because your cross is the source of all blessings, the cause of all graces. Through the cross the faithful receive strength from weakness, glory from dishonor, life from death.” (St. Leo the Great)

Music during the Offertory: It may seem as though there are many options for the music during the offertory. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal calls for the offertory chant to be sung during the procession, continuing at least until the gifts are placed on the altar.

You may have noticed that the choir has been chanting an antiphon before the offertory hymn. These chants are from a book titled “The Propers for the Mass for Sundays and Solemnities.” These chants were written by Fr. Samuel Weber, O.S.B. who is the same composer of the psalms in the Pew Missal that we use. The texts of the Offertory chants are translated to English from the Graduale Romanum, an official liturgical book of the Roman rite containing propers that are prescribed for each Sunday and Feast Day. The melodies are are also from the Graduale Romanum. Fr. Weber has tried to preserve the ancient Gregorian melodies by underlaying them with English texts. It is particularly challenging because the melodies were written for Latin texts and sometimes the English text simply does not have the same number of syllables as the Latin. He has artfully matched the stressed syllables of the English texts with the arsis and thesis of the Gregorian melodies. It is sometime necessary for Fr. Weber to alter the original Gregorian melodies in order to accommodate the English text. He was inspired to take on this important and monumental task by the statement made by Pope Pius X… “The more closely a composition for church approaches in its movement, inspiration and savor the Gregorian form, the more sacred and liturgical it becomes; and the more out of harmony it is with that supreme model, the less worthy it is of the temple.” The work of Fr. Weber helps us continue to explore what it means to provide “sacred music” for our liturgies. We no longer ask ourselves what we like to sing at Mass, but rather what should we sing at Mass. For now, the Offertory chants are followed by a congregational hymn because it helps to accompany a liturgical action with beautiful poetry and music.
