Nova Silva Cuscatlanica Árboles nativos e introducidos de El Salvador Forests are the principal feature of the potential natural veg- etation of El Salvador, the densely populated and highly de- forested Central American country lying on the Pacific coast between Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Knowledge of the taxonomy of the trees that constitute these forests is a prerequisite for conservation measures and sustainable use of this important natural resource. The prin- cipal objective of the Nova Silva Cuscatlanica is to verify the reports of trees for El Salvador as well as clarifying the application of the scientific names used for them. The work enables correct and verifiable identification of the species found in El Salvador by providing page-level access to the taxonomic literature (which contains descriptions and illus- trations of the species) as well as to the herbarium speci- mens that prove the existence of these species in the country. Additional data include vernacular names, local and global distribution, and selected information on uses. The work comprises three parts published over the past seven years; the families are arranged in alphabetical order within the groups of angiosperms, gymnosperms and pterid- ophytes, with 408 original line drawings distributed over the volumes. Based on collection activities over the past 30 years and an in-depth revision of literature and unpublished materi- als, the annotated checklist of trees and arborescent species covers a total of 1191 species, 115 subspecies and varieties, and three cultivar groups, representing 1206 taxa at the most basic rank, of which 948 are considered native in El Sal- vador. The checklist includes the correct names along with synonyms, basionyms and nomenclatural details. A total of 10 849 herbarium collections are cited, most of which can be consulted in the herbarium of the Jardín Botánico La Laguna (LAGU) in El Salvador, with duplicates in Berlin (B) and numerous other herbaria. The introduction (in Span- ish, English and German) provides a summary of collection activities as well as an introduction to existing taxonomic inventories in El Salvador. The publication was produced in its entirety from a da- tabase hosted by the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin. Like any other scientific work, this one is based on the efforts of many people, who have provided both pub- lished and unpublished data. The title Nova Silva Cuscat- lanica was chosen with reference an unpublished checklists of the trees of El Salvador prepared in 1958 by Paul Hamil- ton Allen under the title Silva Cuscatlanica.
