While looking at houses on our first visit to Nova Scotia--which we were drawn to as a getaway from hot and humid southern summers--we were finally shown this extraordinary piece of property.

No house, but almost four acres of woods with cool ocean breezes. It was love at first sight: the bright blue sea, the variety of forest greens and the greys and whites of the boulders all combined to spark the dream of building our own oceanfront retreat.

We had found the perfect spot; high enough but also close enough to allow gorgeous views as well as easy access to the water.

Exploring, we found wildlife paths winding along the shore and into the woods that we could make our own.

We designed ‘Hunts Point’ as a village by the sea, a concept that grew not just from the architecture of the area, but also because we did not want a house that towered over the site.

The 3 buildings nestle beautifully into the boulder strewn woodlands that surround them.

The Main Residence is home to a Great Room, an open Kitchen with granite counter tops as well as a fireplace crafted with rock quarried on site, and sweeping views of the ocean--thanks to walls of windows that fill the house with natural light.

The Main Residence is flanked by two smaller cottages, one on each side. One is home to a master suite with a luxurious bath, two closets with a dressing area, and a cozy study.

Some friends have asked about the concept of a family compound with several buildings.

For us, the fact that you have to go outside to get from one house to the other is exactly what we wanted.

It gives everyone their own space and privacy, while maintaining a connection to the sights and sounds of this wonderful spot on the eastern coast of Canada.

On summer evenings, We step out of the Bedroom and onto the Terrace, and are awestruck by the immensity of the sky and stars above, and the sound of the ocean always in the background.

The major challenge to building our home in this oceanfront location was rock - lots and lots of enormous rocks.

Ironically, this boulder strewn setting is one of the most beautiful natural features of the property now that the compound has been built.

It was necessary to blast some rock away in order to make way for the foundations for the Main Residence and the two Cottages.

In doing so we found that we had large pieces that could be used for making kitchen countertops, steps for the front walk as well as down towards the ocean and thresholds for the doorways.

We were so inspired when we found that the blasting had created a natural sitting area located at the end of the main building--A perfect place for an outdoor fireplace!

And so our chimney was built to incorporate two flues.

Our stonemason, a young man who had begun to practice his trade by constructing stone walls on his family’s farm, used rock from our property as well as pieces from a local quarry.

It was important to us to build a home that didn’t detract from the natural beauty of the site and I believe we succeeded.

We consider it a private enclave in which structures are secondary to the extraordinary natural features of this property-- the ocean, sky and landscape, with all of their moods, colors, sounds and rhythms at every turn.
