Mr. Jim Doherty (INDIANAPOLIS, CLASS OF 1955) has had another stroke. This one has impeded his ability to transfer and walk independently as well as taken his short term memory. Most devastating to him is his inability to comprehend the written word. He is being taken care of in the rehab section of St. Paul’s Hermitage, 501 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove, IN 46107. Rev. James A. Geiger (COLUMBUS, CASA 1957) is the senior pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in Sugar Grove, OH at the age of 83. He also is still a Judge in their Diocesan Tribunal (and enjoying it all!). Rev. Joseph Mattern (GREEN BAY, CLASS OF 1960) retired in August, 2007 but continues to perform with the “Big Band Reunion”, an 18 piece jazz band in Appleton, WI. He also is the Director of CASA ESTHER, the first Catholic worker house in the Green Bay Diocese. Rev. Bernard (Bob) Bonnot (YOUNGSTOWN, CLASS OF 1968) has been elected Chair of the Presbyterial Council and appointed a Consulter. He became pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in Struthers, OH in September, 2007. Rev. Robert S. Rivers, CSP (PAULIST FATHERS, CLASS OF 1969) is now working in the Paulist Center and doing evangelization in the New England area with preaching, retreats, etc.. Rev. Robert Striegel (DAVENPORT, CLASS OF 1973), was appointed Iowa City VA Hospital Chaplain in 2007. Rev. Msgr. Otto Garcia (BROOKLYN, CLASS OF 1973), after 29 years of service to 3 Diocesan Bishops (as Chancellor, Vicar General, Moderator of the Curia) was finally appointed pastor of a great parish in Jackson Heights, NY. Laus Deo! Rev. Msgr. Robert Flock (LA CROSSE, CLASS OF 1982) recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of his mission parish in Santa Cruz, Bolivia where he has worked the last 20 years. Rev. Kevin M. Laughery (SPRINGFIELD in ILLINOIS, CLASS OF 1983-CASA 1985) is currently serving on the anti-racism team of the Illinois Conference of Churches. Rev. Dave Ireland (CLEVELAND, CLASS OF 1983) celebrated his 25th Anniversary on June 17. Rev. Michael Wensing, STL (SIOUX FALLS, CASA 1985) when named the new Director of the Institute for Continuing Theological Education (ICTE) at the PNAC was also put on the faculty as a Spiritual Director. Rev. William M. Hoppe (BROOKLYN, CASA 1986) celebrated his 30th Anniversary on April 15. Rev. James Oberle (SAN ANTONIO, CLASS OF 1987) had both parents die recently. Remember them in your prayers. Rev. Leo Walsh (ANCHORAGE, CLASS OF 1994-CASA 2008) received his STD in Ecumenical Theology at the Angelicum on June 18. He is Vicar for Clergy, Ecumenical Officer, Vocations Director, and Pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Eagle River, AK. In addition he is State Chaplain to the Knights of Columbus, Outgoing Chair of Catholic Social Services and Treasurer to the Catholic Association of Diocesan Ecumenical and Interreligious Officers. When he is not doing all that, he flies his float-equipped Citabria 7GCBC bush plane to many secret fishing holes in the Alaskan wilderness. Very Rev’d Dom Elias Matthew Carr (ARLINGTON, CLASS OF 1999) advises he went to religious life six years ago and after making his solemn profession in 2006 now has this religious name. He is currently studying at the Casa, working on his dissertation he hopes to finish in 2010. Rev. John B. Gizler (PITTSBURGH, CLASS OF 2002) was recently appointed Pastor of St. Martin de Porres Parish in McKeesport, PA. Rev. Paul C. Fontanella (SCRANTON, CLASS OF 2002) also was recently appointed Administrator of the Church of St. Ann, Williamsport, PA.

In Memoriam

Listed below are the names of our most recently deceased brother alumni. The Alumni Association has arranged for a Mass to be celebrated in the College Chapel for each of our deceased brothers. All alumni are encouraged to remember in prayer and at Mass our deceased brother alumni. (3) Holy cards were sent along with the 2008 Annual Directory this summer. News comes to us in very different ways about the passing of our alumni. Sometimes classmates are very good about sending in photographs and internet links to newspaper notices. Although not all the information we receive can be reprinted in the newsletter, it is all available on our website. We regret that space limitations do not allow us to give more ample obituaries of our alumni. For complete obituaries go to our website at pnac.org/alumni.
