Congratulations NNS Shipbuilders on Christening MinnesotaHave you seen the billboard on Interstate 664 North congratulating Newport News shipbuilders on the christening of Minnesota (SSN 783). The billboard will stay up throughout the month of November. To learn more about Minnesota or other Virginia-class submarines, visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/Minnesota.

On Oct. 18, students from the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy visited Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Supply Chain Management (SCM) division. The Eisenhower School prepares selected military officers and civilians for strategic leadership and success in developing U.S. national security strategy and in evaluating, marshalling, and managing resources in the execution of that strategy.

The purpose of the visit was to give students a look at the supply chain for a prime contractor in the shipbuilding industry. Brian Fields, vice president of SCM, provided the students with a summary of NNS’ supply chain processes including how NNS applies technology to integrate design, material, and build strategy. Each SCM functional director also

spoke in more depth to their respective areas of responsibility. Following the presentations, students were taken on a windshield tour of the shipyard and a demonstration of the Rapidly Operational Virtual Reality (ROVR).

SCM received great feedback from the visit. One student commented, “The tour was fantastic, very educational and a perspective that can’t be achieved in the classroom.” The SCM division acknowledges the importance of hosting guests interested in the shipbuilding industry and looks forward to continued visits in the future.

More than 16,000 pounds of waste was collected at Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) on Sept. 29. The event, sponsored by NNS’ Environmental Engineering team, permitted NNS employees to dispose of hazardous wastes such as oils, paints, thinners, fuels, anti-freeze, lawn and garden, cleaning products, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and propane tanks, at no cost to the employee.

Following the event, NNS’ hazardous waste vendor, Clean Harbors, packaged and removed the waste. Employee feedback on the event was very positive with the recurring suggestion of “Offer this again!” Plans are currently being made to hold another HHWD next year.

Building Relationships EarlyNewport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Talent Acquisition attended several university fall semester career fair recruitment events in nine states during the months of September and October. NNS recruiters, along with shipbuilders who are alumni from the schools visited, were on-site to provide information on summer internships and full-time career openings with NNS.

“As a company, it is critical we establish a solid relationship with these universities and most importantly their students,” said Marti Kuhns, manager of Human Resources Talent Acquisition. “Our goal is to hire the best of the best for our summer internships and our entry-level business, IT, and engineering positions.”

NNS and Huntington Ingalls Industries will begin accepting applications for the 2013 summer internship program on Nov. 26. For info, visit www.huntingtoningalls.com/careers/internship.
