LACKLAND ISD Earns State’s Highest Fiscal Accountability Rating

Lackland Independent School District officials announced

that the district received a rating of “Superior Achievement”

under Texas’ Schools FIRST financial accountability rating

system. The Superior Achievement rating is the state’s

highest, demonstrating the quality of Lackland ISD’s

financial management and reporting system.

This is the 9th year of Schools FIRST (Financial

Accountability Rating System of Texas), financial

accountability system for Texas school districts developed by

the Texas Education Agency in response to Senate Bill 875 of

the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999. The primary goal of

Schools FIRST is to achieve quality performance in the

management of school districts’ financial resources, a goal

made more significant due to the complexity of accounting

associated with Texas’ school finance system.

The Schools FIRST accountability rating system assigns one

of four financial accountability ratings to Texas school

districts, with the highest being “Superior Achievement,”

followed by “Above-Standard Achievement,” “Standard

Achievement” and “Substandard Achievement.” Districts

with serious data quality problems may receive the additional

rating of “Suspended – Data Quality.” Districts that receive

the “Substandard Achievement” or “Suspended – Data

Quality” ratings under Schools FIRST must file a corrective

action plan with the Texas Education Agency.

“We are very pleased with Lackland ISD’s Schools FIRST

rating,” said Lackland ISD Superintendent , Dr. Burnie L.

Roper, “as it shows that our district is making the most of our

federal, state and local dollars. This rating shows that

Lackland’s schools are accountable not only for student

learning, but also for achieving these results cost-effectively

and efficiently.”

Ms. Motz second grade class visited The San Antonio Museum of Art and learned how animals have been used in art by

many different ancient cultures. Students learned about animals in China, Latin America, and Egypt. After the tour and lesson, they

were able to make clay animals. When the class returned, it let Mr. Garcia have the sculptures to "fire" in the kiln so students can take them home. It was a fun day and everyone learned new and

exciting information!

Lackland Elementary Student Council News The Lackland Elementary Student Council is organizing a blanket and towel drive

for those who cannot speak for themselves: our four-legged friends. As the

weather grows colder, the homeless pet population suffers the effects of cold

and exposure.

The animals do not have a warm blanket to curl up in or a clean towel to snuggle

with. The Student Council is accepting clean towels, blankets, and sheets for

the local animal shelters. Donations of dry dog and cat food are also being

accepted. Please drop off your items to Mrs. Torre, Student Council Advisor, in

room 4404 (Bldg 8244). Our "Paws for a Cause" campaign will run to the end of

January. Gently used, clean items are always accepted. Let's "raise the woof"

and take care of our furry friends!!!

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) provides an opportunity for students to

participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.

The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to

make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.

SEAP provided competitive research internships to over 265 high school students this year. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at 24 DoN laboratories.

The online application will open on October 1st, 2012 for the 2013 program.

See Mrs. Rue or Mrs. Nicholson if interested.
