Itʼs been a busy few weeks in the city. PeelHoldings announced an extra £60 million ofinvestment at Gloucester Quays, with a newcinema as well as restaurants, bars and shops. At the end of November, the Councilʼs PlanningCommittee will determine major planningapplications for the Railway Triangle (a Morrisonssupermarket with commercial units alongside)and Tescoʼs plans for a much bigger store at StOswaldʼs Park.Contractors have been on site in Kings
Square, filling in the old “bearpit” toilets andturfing over them – bringing some much-neededgreenery to an otherwise bleak space. This isanother boost to the area, on top of Debenhamsʼmulti-million pound refurbishment.Weʼve also completed the refurbishment of the
ground floor of the City Museum in BrunswickRoad, providing a new café and telling the storyof Gloucester in a much more compelling andinteractive way. Itʼs well worth a visit. Weʼre alsopressing on with works to safeguard the future ofthe historic Fleece Hotel in Westgate Street, nowin City Council ownership after a decade of beingleft to decay in Regional Development Agencyownership. While all of this is taking place, we are having
to work hard to deliver a very challenging budget– with £4 million of savings needed off an £18million budget. Iʼm pleased to say that we arebroadly on track, having taken many difficultdecisions. We have recently concluded a dealwith Civica, a private company, to take over ourRevenues and Benefits functions. This will saveus over £200,000 a year immediately, protectjobs – and potentially create more jobs as Civicagrows its business. We are switching on our Christmas lights
on Sunday 20th November, with a lanternprocession of schoolchildren through the citycentre streets with a theme of “stars”. Theprocession will finish in the Cathedral. Pleasecome along and support our local children – andplease support our local traders this Christmas.

It is a pleasure to be asked to write for The LocalAnswer. The growth of “freemium” magazines, likeThe Local Answer, is a great example of aninnovative product bringing useful information tothousands of people at absolutely no charge to thereader. All local content, adverts from Gloucesterbusinesses and some really good news storiesabout our city. The economic recovery is the key issue facing this
government and it is my firm belief that Gloucesterwill play a key role in this. Gloucester is at the heartof Gloucestershire's manufacturing sector, we area hub for engineering and manufacture and I haverecently visited a number of businesses that areflourishing, all in the manufacturing sector, all lookingto take on apprentices and we must support ourlocal industry and promote exports.Making things is what Gloucester has always done
and we need to carry that forward into the future, encouraging more pupils to look at future vocationalor graduate qualifications like engineering anddesign. We must promote a wider approach to
apprenticeships by manufacturers: not justapprentices for engineering but also for finance,Human Resources and administrative departments. My own apprentice tackles a huge range of tasksfrom casework to events organizing and isflourishing.I am organising the first Barnwood Jobs Fair at
the Gloucestershire DearAssociation. There is moredetail on the jobs fair in the ‘What’s On’ pages. Therewill be over 20 employers there from a widerange of sectors all looking to take on new staff. Iwould encourage everyone who is without work toattend that event. There are a lot of positive things going on in
Gloucester and I am looking forward to being ableto tell you about some of them in The Local Answer.

AT THE start of the 2011-12 season, GloucesterRugby Head Coach Bryan Redpath laid downa challenge to his players.
With several regulars set to miss the first fewweeks of the Aviva Premiership season due toWorld Cup duty or injury, the opportunity wasthere for other players to prove themselvesworthy of a first team shirt week in and weekout.
Darren Dawidiuk is one obvious example andhis recent contributions were highlighted by hisMan of the Match performance against BathRugby back in September.
However, similarly impressive has been allaction back row forward Matt Cox. Perhaps evenmore so because he’s rolled up his sleeves andgot stuck into covering two different positions– number eight and blindside flanker.
“I’m a 23-year-old who wants to play everyweek! I’ve got great players around me like AndyHazell, Peter Buxton and Luke Narraway, players with great experience and I’m lovinglearning from them.”
And, despite the back row being one of themost competitive areas of the squad wheneveryone is healthy and available, Cox praisedthe willingness to share information for thegreater good of the team. “We’re all in the samecause, we’re all fighting the same fight and that’svital.”
Cox’s first season at Kingsholm saw him haveto remain patient as the form of the likes of Andy
Hazell and Akapusi Qera meant that first teamchances were difficult to come by.
The latter part of the season was a differentstory altogether and the Redditch born playerfound himself taking part in a couple ofGloucester’s more memorable displays. He evenfound time to unveil some slick handling skills ashe helped create tries in the LV= Cup final and41-41 draw at the Leicester Tigers.
If last season was about patience, then2011-12 has been all about playing his part. Cox
has started all the Aviva Premiership games todate and to use what has become a GloucesterRugby catchphrase, he’s ‘loving life’.
“I’m playing massive games against rivals likeWorcester and Bath in front of near sell-outs atKingsholm. It’s just good to be part of it and evenbetter to be on the winning side!” Long may itcontinue!
Gloucester Rugby have kindly given us 5 pairsof tickets for the Kingsholm clash withConnacht on Saturday 17th December to bewon by lucky readers of The Local Answer. To enter the draw, just send your name,
address and telephone number to: ConnachtDraw, The Local Answer, 1 UllenwoodCourt, Ullenwood, Cheltenham GL53 9QS.Closing date: Monday 14th November 2011.

Short Walks in The Cotswolds in association with
There are no major architectural masterpieces orpanoramic views on this route – it is simply a verypleasant walk through small villages and veryattractive meadows. Do not be put off by the roadsection, for the lanes are very quiet. The large village green and duck pond form the visualcentrepiece of Biddestone, a spot that tempts you tolinger. Slaughterford was probably named similarlyto the other more famous Slaughters, as 'the ford bythe sloe trees'.A Park the car in Biddestone. At the road junctionby the pond, take the left road signposted toHartham. Just past the church bear right alongChallows Lane and follow the road to the road junction(Weavern Lane) at the bottom of the steep hill.
1 The earliest parts of Biddestone church werecompleted by the middle of the 12th century. Its mostnotable feature, however, is the Early English bellturret, the lower section built in the 13th century andthe remainder in the 15th.

MANY of us have space in ourhomes that we just donʼt makethe most of – our lofts. Even ifweʼve gone to the trouble ofboarding our roof space, oftenthe method of access we usedoesnʼt encourage frequent use.
We decided to change all thatin our house, and solicited theadvice of Mark Bain of Elite LoftLadders. Mark spent the first 30years of his working life as acarpenter and now specializesin loft ladder installation. Heʼs aself-confessed perfectionistwhich, apart from showingthrough in the finished job, wasevident in his planning, preparation and use of dustsheets to protect our home.
The end result is great. Markincreased the size of our hatchopening (it was a bit of asqueeze before) and installed afolding wooden ladder andhinged door which is held closedby a simple twist latch. Theladder itself is supported by aspring mechanism to avoid itsuddenly dropping down on you.
Mark is very friendly, professional and – due to hisbackground in carpentry – wejust knew the finishing toucheswould be perfect.
We now have a wonderfullysafe, swift and easy access toour loft which lends itself tomuch greater use.

November is a good month to look back at your gardenover the summer and to perhaps decide you wouldlike to change some aspects of it. We are not talkingnecessarily about a complete garden makeover but eventhe best gardens need reworking as the years go on.Perhaps a border is getting too congested, or the gardenlooks stunning in spring and then fizzles out becomingboring for the rest of the year, or the winter garden hasno redeeming features – all these can be rectified.
I often get asked to replant borders, and with a little tweaking and careful plant choice it can make anamazing difference to a garden. It is not expensive, andbecause the plants are carefully chosen they will flourishin their position thus saving on impulse purchases thatdie off! If you are not confident enough to make the choicesyourself or just want a second opinion contact methrough my website or phone for more details.
Prune blackcurrants now, removing 2 or 3 of theoldest branches down to the base. You can take cuttingsreally easily from blackcurrant bushes by cutting somehealthy 25cm long shoots which have formed this year(make a slanted cut at the bottom so you know which wayup they go!) and simply sticking them in the ground – itreally is that easy.
When the mowing has come to a halt later this monthbook your mower in to be serviced thus beating the springrush. Now is also a good time to clean and oil tools andsend off secateurs to be sorted out if they are in a bit ofa state. As I said last year I sent my Felcos off to acompany in Leicester recommended by Helen Yemm ofthe Telegraph and for £14.50 including p&p they cameback like new! (Tel. 0116 2344646) I must get round todoing it again soon.
Hybrid tea and floribunda roses need to be cut back byabout one-third now which will stop wind rock looseningthe roots through the winter. Also cut off any dead, diseased or crossing growth. Leave the rest for the springpruning.
If shrubs such as Cotinus (smoke bush) have becometoo large they can be cut back now by a third providingthe weather is still mild, and this will produce a morecompact shrub next year.
Leaves can be left lying in borders as long as they arenot covering heathers or other evergreen plants which willmake them rot. Remove any leaves infected with scab, blackspot or leaf blight and donʼt use them for leaf mould.

Millions of people across the world will be veryfamiliar with the inside of Gloucester Cathedral, but sadly few outside of Gloucestershire willknow where that famous old interior is. I am ofcourse referring to the Harry Potter films that usedthe grand old building as a location for filming forthe first, second and sixth films.
This was great for the Cathedral and surroundingarea generating revenue and publicity, even if itdid cause some controversy with a few people whofelt that the themes of the films were unsuitablefor a Cathedral. Since then the Cathedral has beenused in 2008 as a location for the Doctor WhoChristmas Special.
The choice of the Cathedral as a film locationcan be no real surprise given the magnificence ofthe building and its history. It is really somethingto behold, inside and outside as well, giving theresidents of the city a clue to the importance ofGloucester. The building itself is over 900 yearsold. Over its many years the Cathedral haswitnessed many important events, from the civilwar to burials of Kings that have taken place there.King Edward II was buried there in 1327. It wasdissolved as an Abbey in 1540 only to be re-founded as a Cathedral in 1541 by King Henry VIII.
The Cathedral has other interesting features aswell. It has a stained glass window containing theearliest images of golf anywhere in the world, dating from 1350 – 300 years before the earliestgolf images from Scotland. Was golf originallythought of in Gloucestershire? There is also acarving believed to be one of the earliest imagesof medieval football.
With part of the Cathedral having worldwidefame for its present role it is almost a shame thatthe history of it has almost been forgotten incomparison and it wouldnʼt do the Cathedral anyharm for more people to invest time in visiting it.

Where did the summergo? This seems to besomething I think everyyear at this time, but withthe arrival of Autumncome a number of issuesfor local policing. First of allBritish summer timecomes to an end and theevenings will be darkerearlier. As a result of thiswe often see a spike inthefts and burglaries atthis time of year, withmany of these being theresult of insecurities. Therefore please give this somethought and make sure you keep windows and doorslocked when you’re not in. The local policing team willbe running Operation Brecon throughout Novemberto target those seeking to take advantage of darkerevenings, but any preventative measures you can takewill be very helpful in keeping crime down.Other crime issues we often see in the city centrearound this time of year includes bicycle thefts. If youcan, try to use two different types of lock when securingyour bike and if you have to leave your cycle on thestreet, it's generally best to use the purpose made cyclestands located around the city, if they’re available. Butif not, look for other secure, immovable cycle parkingsuch as railings and lamp-posts etc. There is a lot moreinformation regarding security measures you can takeand the types of locks you can use on the Constabulary’swebsite, so for more information please take a look atwww.gloucestershire.police.uk, under cycle safety. For those of you out on theweekends inGloucester thereis currently another operation, which is part of acountywide initiative to tackle violence, anti-socialbehaviour, disorder and drug and alcohol related crime. This is operation Scorpion which has led to a greaternumber of police officers being deployed onto the streetsof Gloucester on Friday and Saturday nights.A wide range of offences have been tackled by officerscommitted to operation Scorpion such as underagedrinking, assaults, drink driving and drugs offences andthis has had a positive impact on crime and incidentsover the weekends. Operation Scorpion will continueto run for many months to come, so if you are out tohave a good time and enjoy yourself in a responsibleway you have nothing to worry about, however theminority who seek to cause trouble will more than likelyfind themselves in a police cell.
