Children in ‘war torn’ countries speak out:

“Please open the school again. The war is between adults, but it affects us children.”

- Gamesh, 16, Nepal

“It’s far better to learn life skills and lessons than the education of war. If we all go to school maybe there will be no more war.”

- Sarah, 15, Southern Sudan

“I am very proud to know how to count and read. I now say to all young brothers not to get involved with the military.

It’s not good for children.” - Felix, 16, Cote d’Ivoire

Life is good because my

sisters, brothers and I have the

possibility to go to school and learn. But I also

dream of a country that’s not at war. I want the

entire Afghan people to stand together.”

- Mirwais, 14 Afghanistan

Vic Juba Community Theatre presents “Don’t Dress for Dinner” within their Dr. H. A. McDonald Season on Nov 19-21. Dinner tickets are available. Cocktails begin at 5:30 pm, dinner service starts at 6:00 pm, with the performance starting at 7:30 pm. This comedy is performed by Vic Juba Community Players and directed by Matt Newman under the mentorship of Wendy Collins. The cast includes Cornelius Krahn who performs the role of Bernard (the husband), Nadine Walker-Perry who performs the role of Jacqueline (his wife), Dave Woods plays Robert (Bernard's friend), Joelle Collins plays Suzanne (Bernard's mistress), Candace Scobie performs the role of Suzette (the cook), and Ben Acquaye plays George (Suzette's husband). Bernard is planning a romantic weekend with his mistress in his charming converted French farmhouse, while his wife, Jacqueline, is away. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights, and has invited his best friend, Robert, along too to provide the alibi. It's foolproof; what could possibly go wrong? Well.... suppose Robert turns up not realizing quite why he has been invited. Suppose Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers, and consequently determined that Jacqueline will NOT leave for the weekend. Suppose the cook has to pretend to be the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook. Suppose everyone's alibi gets confused with everyone else's. An evening of hilarious confusion ensues as Bernard and Robert improvise at breakneck speed. “Don't Dress for Dinner” is a two-act play by French playwright Marc Camoletti, who wrote the farce Boeing-Boeing. The play has been adapted for English audiences by Robin Hawdon. This production is performed by special arrangement with Samuel French. Performance only tickets are $25 (adults) and $5 (students) (Recommended for ages 14+). Roast Baron of Beef dinner tickets are $35. For tickets, please contact the Box Office at 780-872-7400, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

November is Prematurity awareness monthPremature birth is a leading cause of death, illness and hospitalization of infants around the world.A premature baby is any baby born before 37 weeks gestation. A term pregnancy ranges from early term (37wks-38wks,6d), full term (39wks-40wks,6d), late term (41 wks-41wks6d) to post-term(42 + weeks).Babies born before 37 weeks have been shown to have less brain development then their full term counterparts. This can potentially lead to intellectual challenges, cerebral palsy, and diculties breathing, seeing and hearing. It is important to allow a baby to reach his optimal brain development.Research has shown the importance of breast milk and how it can benet the preterm infant. Breastmilk can help in the optimal pattern of infant gut microbiota, it can also may help against the use of antibiotics at birth. Often, the specic cause of premature birth isn't clear. Many factors may increase the risk of premature birth, however, including: Having a previous premature birth, Pregnancy multiples, An interval of less than six months between pregnancies, Conceiving through in vitro fertilization, Problems with the uterus, cervix or placenta, Smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol or using illicit drugs, Poor nutrition, Some infections, particularly of the amniotic uid and lower genital tract, Some chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, Being underweight or overweight before pregnancy, Stressful life events, such as the death of a loved one or domestic violence, Multiple miscarriages or abortions, Physical injury or trauma and Unusual shape of the uterusSigns of Premature Labour: Contractions or cramps, more than 5 in one hour , Bright red blood from your vagina ,Pain during urination, possible urinary tract, bladder or kidney infection , Sudden gush of clear, watery uid from your vagina , Low, dull backache or Intense pelvic pressure . If you experience any of these you should call your practitioner right away. Call even in the middle of the night. You should have an emergency number, if not, go to the nearest emergency room for care. Some women make the mistake of thinking that they couldn't be in labor because they aren't near their due date and so they don't call. This is not the way to think about it, so even if you're not expecting labor, if you think you might be in labor get help immediately. Prevention of Preterm Labor Stay hydrated. . What happens with dehydration is that the blood volume decreases, therefore increasing the concentration of oxytocin (hormone that causes uterine contractions) to rise. Hydrating yourself will increase the blood volume. Others things that you can do would be to pay attention to signs and symptoms of infections (bladder, yeast, etc.) because they can also cause infections. Simple ways to help reduce your risk. 1) Reduce stress, anxiety and depression. If stress, anxiety, and depression can provoke preterm labor, it would make sense to do everything within our power to reduce stress and anxiety levels in our lives and to seek out natural, psycho-therapeutic, or pharmacological anti-depressive aids. 2) Strengthen the immune system.A strong immune system will attack infections and eliminate them far more quickly, reducing the amount of time the body has increased levels of inammation. 3) Increase low magnesium and vitamin d levels. What are the best dietary sources for magnesium? Pumpkin seeds, spinach, and swiss chard are some of the best. 4) Increase your pre-pregnancy tness level and stay active. While pregnancy isn’t the ideal time to work on losing excess weight or to start a rigorous exercise program, research does indicate that “high body fat is related to high inammation and high tness to low inammation” Research has found that moderate prenatal exercise may “be of value in preventing preterm labour5) Increase your consumption of anti-inammatory foods.Rather than taking vast quantities of ibuprofen, you may want to try consuming larger quantities of anti-inammatory foods such as: olive oil, sh oil (and other omega-3’s), turmeric, sweet potatoes, blueberries (and other berries), papaya, broccoli, cauliower, cherries, garlic, ginger, almonds, apples, cinnamon, dark chocolate, rosemary, chili peppers, meats from grass-fed animals (if you’re a meat-eater), and more. You’ll also want to reduce your intake of foods that increase inammation such as: rened sugars and grains, polyunsaturated vegetable oils (such as saower, soy, sunower, corn and cottonseed oil), processed meats, alcohol, MSG, aspartame, and any foods you may be allergic to.

My son regaled me with stories about how they do things in the modern Air Force.

Being an old Air Force man myself, I scoffed at their complicated

methods. “That’s not the way we did it when I was in the service,” I said. “Yeah,” he shot back. “But when you were in the

service, there were only two pilots, Wilbur and Orville!”

Government in Action

Oops: The rural municipality of Hanover, Manitoba, has prohib-ited alcohol sales for more than a century--or at least that’s what everyone in the community be-lieved as recently as 2006 when the last attempt was made to repeal the ban (and failed, by 30 votes). However, town offi-cials finally decided recently to research the prohibition (exam-ining records back to 1880) and in July revealed, astonishingly, that no city bylaw exists mak-ing the town dry. At least one restaurateur is expected to start

serving booze soon. [Canadian Press via National Post, 7-24-2014]

Wait, What!

In October in Gresham, Ore., a 21-year-old man openly car-rying a handgun he had just bought was robbed, at gunpoint, the same day. According to the police report, the robber appar-ently thought the victim’s gun was nicer than his own: “I like your gun. Give it to me.” [KPTV (Portland), 10-7-2014]

It was a dark, stormy, night. The Marine was on his first assignment, and it was guard duty. A General stepped out taking his dog for a walk. The nervous young Private snapped to attention, made a

perfect salute, and snapped out “Sir, Good Evening, Sir!”The General, out for some relaxation, returned the salute and said

“Good evening soldier, nice night, isn’t it?”Well it wasn’t a nice night, but the Private wasn’t going to disagree with the General, so the he saluted again and replied “Sir, Yes Sir!”.

The General continued, “You know there’s something about a stormy night that I find soothing, it’s really relaxing. Don’t

you agree?”The Private didn’t agree, but then the private was just a private, and

responded “Sir, Yes Sir!”The General, pointing at the dog, “This is a Golden Retriever, the best type of dog to train.”

The Private glanced at the dog, saluted yet again and

said “Sir, Yes Sir!”The General continued “I got

this dog for my wife.”The Private simply said

“Good trade Sir!”

Why do we wear poppies?

ORIGIN:

Flanders is the name of the whole western part of Belgium.

It saw some of the most concentrated and bloodiest fighting

of the First World War. There was complete devastation.

Buildings, roads trees and natural life simply disappeared.

Where once there were homes and farms there was also now a

sea of mud, a grave for the dead where men still lived and fought.

Only one other living thing survived. The poppy flowering each

year with the coming of the warm weather, brought life, hope,

color and reassurance to those still fighting. Poppies only flower in

rooted up soil. Their seeds can lie in the ground for years without

germinating and only grow after the ground has been disturbed.

Page 13: Nov 10 Lloydminster

Why Remember?

We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be

meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a

collection of traditions they cherished and a future they

believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their

sacrifice rests with our collective national

consciousness; our future is their monument.

“I am a Canadian, free to speak

without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or

free to choose those who shall govern my country.

This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind”.

by John Diefenbaker-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Marine instructor in chemical warfare asked soldiers in his class: Anyone knows the formula for water?

Sure. That’s easy, said one recruit. What is it? H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O.

What, what? reasked the instructor. H to O, explained the recruit. You are officer material son!

Observations of life ......

* Don’t take life too seriously, you won’t get out alive.* May your life be like toilet paper... Long and useful.

* Someone said to Voltaire, “Life is hard.” Voltaire replied, “Compared to what?”

* We are born naked, wet, and hungry. Then things get worse. * Life is full of disappointments, and I’m full of life!

* What a wonderful life I’ve had! I only wish I’d realized it sooner.

* Enjoy life. There’s plenty of time to be dead. * There is no cure for birth or death save to enjoy the interval. * Life is like a razor, you are always in hot water or a scrape. * My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the

rest of my life there. * Life is what happens while you are making other plans. * The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds.

The pessimist fears it’s true. * Here is the test to find whether your mission on

earth is finished. If you’re alive, it isn’t.
