The mental health challenge Nottingham Counselling Service helps to meet the challenge Our outcomes 1 in 4 adults will have a mental health problem this year Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS) promotes emotional health and wellbeing by offering inclusive, accessible services and delivering ethical professional counselling utilising qualified counsellors. NCS is helping to reduce healthcare costs, reduce benefits costs, and days lost through stress related illness. By making the service affordable to those that would otherwise not use the NHS or private counsellors, we are helping to improve affordable access to therapy for vulnerable people. Volunteering opportunities are also helping to increase the pool of qualified counsellors and psychotherapists available locally to meet increasing demands for psychological support through counselling. Every week we help 100 - 150 people from Nottingham and the surrounding area We receive more than 14 new referrals for our services each week. of all illness is related to mental health 30% of all GP consultations relate to mental health Cost to the UK economy of mental illness is £120 billion 40% 91% of our clients report significant improvements in their health and well-being after counselling 91% Satisfaction rate across all our counselling service are 94% 94% £120 BILLION 30% A programme of counselling has been shown to have a value to society over 12 months of at least £4,800 per client 38 counsellors volunteered to provide counselling therapy free of charge in 2015 We provide facilities for other organisations such as Framework Housing Association-Last Orders and Nottingham Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust We source many of our services including IT and counsellors from 20 different businesses in Nottingham. We provide work experience, mentoring and skills development training for 9 trainee counsellors. Working in partnership with local Higher Education institutions. 80% of our Employees live and are economically active in Nottinghamshire 90% of our volunteer counsellors live in Nottinghamshire we also have volunteers from Derbyshire Last year our volunteers provided £240,000 worth of counselling services free of charge. Our volunteers gained through continuing professional development and exercising their duties as good active citizens Counselling saves the public purse £3,400 per case in the prevention of expenditure across a range of public service provisions For the year ended March 2015 we supported 419 people That’s £2.01 million of value added to our society Last year 419 people recieve therapy from us. That’s £1.4 million of savings for the public purse Jane presented with feelings of isolation and of being lonely and was struggling to continue to work. Through therapy Jane felt able to reach out to her work colleagues, alleviating her loneliness and isolation. Jane began to value herself and to see the potential in her own life. John sought therapy in order to cope with a difficult break up following a long-term relationship. Talking to a Counsellor helped John get his own thoughts straight about his situation and to gain perspective.
