We all love a fairy tale and, of course, everyone likes to hear great music, so nottingham symphony Orchestra’s next concert is not to be missed.

Featuring four fantastic pieces inspired by fairy tales and stories, the concert takes place on saturday 2nd march, at the city’s albert hall venue, conducted by derek Williams. Get your tickets now for this feast of music.

The concert begins with humperdinck’s glorious hansel and Gretel Overture, the prelude to his delightful fairytale opera based on the German folk story made famous by the Brothers Grimm.

The sorcerer’s apprentice is a glittering ‘scherzo for orchestra’ by French composer paul dukas, based on a Goethe poem and, for listeners of a certain age, the music will immediately conjure up images of mickey mouse frantically trying to cope with rapidly dividing broomsticks and copious buckets of water in the film Fantasia.

Josef suk is not a composer familiar to many in this country but if you love the music of dvorák then suk’s sparkling four-movement suite pohadka (Fairy Tale) will be a wonderful discovery. not only was suk dvorák’s favourite pupil, he later became his son-in-law and the second movement in particular sounds like a lost Slavonic Dance. The whole work is long overdue for a revival and we are delighted to play it for nottingham audiences in this concert.

Finally, there is Rimsky-korsakov’s spectacular orchestral showpiece scheherazade, a colourful and scintillating four-movement work based on stories from the 1001 Nights.

With guest conductor Keiron Anderson at the helm, the concert will feature a mouth-watering array of American and film classics, including Fanfare For The Common Man, The Incredibles, Schindler’s List, Star Wars and Adagio For Strings. And, as if all that wasn’t enough, there is also the option of staying on after the concert for a tasty American-themed meal.

The season ends on Saturday 6th July at St Mary’s Church in Nottingham with Weber’s lively Der Freischutz Overture, Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto – featuring the return of Braimah Kanneh-Mason from Nottingham’s famous musical family as soloist - and Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, one of the highlights of the 19th century repertoire, rounding off the concert in epic style.
