From the Desk of Father Scolaro The summer is a great time to slow down and take a deep breath from all the stress of the year. Whether it’s sitting on the beach, out on the porch, or wherever we find peace, it’s often an opportunity to step back and take stock of our lives, to reflect on the prior year and look forward to the year to come. The quiet moments are a chance to put everything in perspective, something hard to do when we’re busy running around. In our world today, many would speak of this as “meditation.” And while we as Catholics might agree, we believe there is something special to meditation which transforms this quiet time of reflection, into something much richer and more fulfilling. Because in our view, the world has two major misconceptions when it comes to meditation. First, there is a misconception which comes from yoga and eastern spirituality. In these schools of thought, the goal of meditation is to quiet oneself, tune out distractions, and turn inward. Turning inward then, one is able to find a nothingness which gives peace and detachment from the world. The other misconception would be a more secular one, which sees meditation really as a time of thinking. In the quiet, we are able to sort out our thoughts and make sense of things. What would we say meditation is? Similar to eastern spirituality, an essential part of meditation is turning inward. It is important to find time for quiet to block out all the distractions. But once we have achieved that interior peace, we do not find nothingness, but rather we find God who dwells within us. Meditation is not about the dissolution of the self, but an enriching of the self by an encounter with the divine. And while we too, like the secular mentality, would see meditation as a time of sorting through our thoughts, we would see it as more of a dialogue rather than a monologue. Part of facing the challenges of our life in those clear moments is that we are bringing them to God and asking for His guidance and assistance. Meditation then, is all about prayer. We need silent time every day to do these two things: connect with God and chat with Him about all that is going on in our lives. As I like to say, it’s a time to say the four magic words to God: please, thank you, I’m sorry, and I love you. Very often it is also an opportunity to reflect on God’s goodness and the mysteries of our faith. It is in meditation that we can spend time thinking about the love of God shown on the cross, or the beauty of Mary’s yes to God at the Annunciation, or what an incredible gift the Most Blessed Sacrament is. Meditating on the scriptures or good spiritual reading can especially help facilitate this deepening of our faith. So we should all strive to find that time each day for silence to connect with God. We need to find some space in our lives where we can escape distraction and worldly worries, and focus on the eternal things which are truly important. Whether it’s early in the morning in front of a crucifix, late at night on our knees at the bedside, or stopping into the church during the day, especially during adoration, meditation and mental prayer are essential. Because when they are part of our routine, we’ll find that we have a better sense of the trajectory of our lives, understanding what we are doing and why we are doing it; we’ll be more grateful of God’s blessings and confident in the face of our trials; and we’ll ap-preciate more deeply the mysteries of our faith and the part we play in God’s plan. This summer may we all build that habit of meditation which raises our hearts and minds to God each day. Yours in Christ,

OPTIMISM DURING COVID
Last week I shared about spirituality during Covid. An-other concept which will help us to overcome the diffi-culties of this pandemic is optimism. Winston Churchill once said, "A pessimist sees the diffi-culty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the oppor-tunity in every difficulty." Optimism is a positive frame of mind and means that a person takes the view of expecting the best outcome from any given situation. An optimistic person is one who sees the glass as 'half-full' instead of 'half-empty'. In the same way, an optimistic person will find something positive even in this pandemic. Optimism and hope cause better resistance to depression during Covid times. It also cre-ates in us better physical health too. A positive emotion about the future includes faith, trust and optimism. To many psychologists, optimism reflects the belief that the outcomes of events or experiences will generally be positive. Others contend that optimism is more an ex-planatory style; it resides in the way people explain the causes of events. Optimists are likely to see the causes of failure or negative experiences as temporary rather than permanent, specific rather than global, and external rather than internal. Such a perspective enables optimists to more easily see the possibility of change. Many studies reveal that people who are more optimistic have better pain management, improved immune and car-diovascular function, and greater well-being. Optimism helps buffer the negative effects of physical illness and is associated with better health outcomes in general. They tend to look for meaning in adversity, which can make them more resilient. Many of us are worried and anxious during this pandem-ic. A positive attitude and optimism will help us to over-come this situation. We often say: “everything will be fine”. Yes, everything will be fine, if we have an optimis-tic attitude. We will overcome this pandemic too. Blessings, Fr. Joe Mappilamattel
