PREFACE.

It is now generally admitted by those whose experience en-

ables them best to judge upon the subject, that there is no

great reason to anticipate the discovery of any extensive or

important collection of Records or Historical Documents in

Scotland. The external and internal commotions to which

that Kingdom has been so frequently exposed in days of yore,

and the zeal and activity with which its repositories have been

investigated of late, make this conclusion a matter almost ap-

proximating to certainty. The contents of the Register Office

and of the Advocates' Library are well known to all inter-

ested in antiquarian and historical pursuits ; and there remains

no mass of unexplored or unsorted documents, amongst

which the discovery of hidden treasures may be anticipated.

But it is not so with the Libraries and Record Offices of

England. They present a sufficient degree of vagueness to

b

xii PREFACE.

stimulate inquiry;—and, judging by the results of such in-

vestigations already before the public,—a sufficient prospect

of that investigation being attended with ample success.

The Tower, the Chapter-House, the Exchequer Offices, the

State Paper Office, the British Museum, the Bodleian Library,

the diiFerent Collegiate Libraries in the two Universities,

and the Public Library at Cambridge, &c., all abound in ma-

terials as yet imperfectly known, and inadequately examined.

Difficulties attend the examination of some of these Col-

lections, however, and, even in those which are most freely

opened to the inquirer, he will frequently be deterred from a

satisfactory examination. The wide extent of the Collec-

tion, the absence of catalogues, or, if they exist, of a classifi-

cation, the difficulty of decyphering the characters in which

the documents are written, and of deciding whether they

contain matter which is really useful or curious, all conspire

to make the investigation one of time and difficulty.

To remove some of these impediments is the object of

the present volume. It lays before the inspection of those

most interested in the inquiry, information respecting the

contents of some Collections of Records neither generally

known nor easy of access. It professes to bring before their

notice a mass of highly valuable records, of which the exist-

ence is known only to a few ; and it points out to them a

source whence they may derive abundant materials for subse-

quent publication.

Page 19: Notices of original unprinted documents ... - deriv.nls.uk · thedocumentsarewritten, andofdecidingwhetherthey containmatter which is reallyuseful or curious, all conspire to make

PREFACE. xiii

The reader will observe, that by far the greatest portion of

thq, present volume is occupied with a Catalogue of certain re-

cords connected with the History of Scotland, which are atpre-

sent preserved in the Queen's Remembrancer's Office. Many

circumstances tend to make these documents highly interest-

ing. They relate to one of the most busy and important pe-

riods of Scottish history, the period when that kingdom was

overrun by King Edward the First of England. It is obvious

that Scotland cannot furnish many new materials for a history

of this period ; if, indeed, any yet remain unexamined. Of the

English Records, the most important are the Rotuli Scotiae.

They form, indeed, the great storehouse, whence is derived al-

most all the information which can add to, or correct, or con-

firm the narratives of the Historians who lived at the period.

But if we turn to the Rotuli Scotiae, we shall find that they

are sadly defective towards the end of the reign of Edward

the First. For example, the 26th and 27th years of his reign

contain nothing but letters of protection and letters of at-

torney,* leaving us in total ignorance of the great transactions

which were then passing. There are no Rolls for the 28th

* These two years occupy scarce a page in the printed edition, (i. 51,) and their con-

tents are thus dsscribed by the Editor of that publication :

" In toto rotulo de duobus annis, novem membranas densissime scriptas, etpleras-

In nu-

mero ingente nominum inveniuntur sequentia virorum prsecipuorum, ex illis, qui in

utroque regno terras habuerunt."

Page 20: Notices of original unprinted documents ... - deriv.nls.uk · thedocumentsarewritten, andofdecidingwhetherthey containmatter which is reallyuseful or curious, all conspire to make

and 29th regnal years ;* the 30th, 31st, and 32d, are of the

same barren character as the preceding ones to which we

have alhidedjf and of the Rolls for the remaining years of that

monarch's reign, not one has come down to us,J if, indeed,

they ever existed.

It appears, then, from what has been stated, that the Rotuli

Scotiae may be said to terminate with A.D. 1297, leaving a

blank of about ten years before the series is resumed.

To supply that blank we must turn to the documents con-

tained in the Queen's Remembrancer's Office, as indicated by

the present Catalogue. That series takes up the information

nearly at the point where we are deserted by the Scottish

Rolls, and guides us to more than one hundred and fifty con-

temporary and official Records of undisputed genuineness and

authenticity, illustrating the annals of Scotland, during that

most important period of her history. By them, among

other particulars, we may trace the progress of the English

arms, the number of soldiers appointed for the defence of the

garrisons in their possession, the quantity of victuals con-

sumed, and the expense with which the campaign was at-

tended. Hence are to be gathered many local facts, for

which we should probably search in vain elsewhere. A few of

* Rot. Scot., 1. 51.

the places whose history might be illustrated from this quar-

ter may be quoted ; such as Aberdeen, Ayr, Berwick, Both-

well, Brechin, Cambuskenneth, Carlaverock, Cumnock, Dum-

fries, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glasgow, &c., &c. For the

remainder, the reader is referred to the Index.

The second portion of the volume contains a Catalogue of

an interesting Manuscript Collection of Original Letters and

Papers respecting Scottish affairs during the reign of Henry

the Eighth of England. It is preserved in the Chapter-House

at Westminster.

Little need be said as to the manner in which the ensuing

notices have been drawn up. The compiler's wish has been

to unite clearness of description with brevity ; to give, at the

same time, an idea of the general contents of the document,

and to preserve sufficient individuality of description as may

suffice for the easy identification of the particular Record.

To attain that end the more effectually, it has been thought

expedient to preserve, in almost every instance, the title by

which the document describes itself; whether that title be

prefixed to the Record by its original scribe, or be derived

from its contents at a subsequent period.

With these few introductory remarks, the compiler leaves

the ensuing pages in the hands of the Reader.
