On the basis of §§ 2 section 4, 64 of the Act on the Universities of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia

(Hochschulgesetz – HG) of 16 Sep. 2014 (GV.NRW p.547), last amended by Art. 3 of the Act on the Assurance

of the Accreditation of Study Programmes in North Rhine-Westphalia of 17 Oct. 2017 (GV. NRW. p. 806),

I. General provisions

§ 1 Scope, objectives of the programme and purpose of the Master’s Examination

(1) These examination regulations apply to the Master’s programme Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health

& Performance (Master of Science, M. Sc.).

(2) The English-language Master’s programme in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance

aims to enable students to critically assess scientific findings and to think and act in a responsible and

interdisciplinary manner. To this end, they should be able to analyse complex issues and develop solu-

tions. Due to the rapidly changing requirements in professional practice, the course of studies is geared

towards the teaching of competences, which on the one hand enables students to familiarise themselves

with various problems and changing areas of responsibility in later professional life, and on the other

hand enables effective communication with specialists of other orientations in the international arena

and in English language, and guarantees a high degree of teamwork.

(3) The Master’s programme in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance comprises six mod-

ules that focus on the development of both general and subject-specific competencies. Altogether, com-

petences for leading functions in different professional areas are imparted. Essential parts of the pro-

gramme include aspects of research-based learning as well as learning through teaching. After imparting

in-depth subject-specific knowledge in the fields of biomechanics, exercise science and sports medicine

& sports nutrition, the students learn demanding methods through independently planned and carried

out experiments in the field and laboratory, among other things, and are enabled to use and further de-

velop them independently. Furthermore, conceptual thinking, scientific work and the ability to critically

classify scientific findings and to act responsibly are taught. Extended study visits abroad are welcome,

achievements abroad will be credited according to § 5 (2). Participation in an international or national

sports science congress is obligatory pursuant to § 4 (2).

(4) The aim of the Master’s examination is to determine whether candidates have acquired a sound

knowledge of the independent application of sophisticated sports science methods and are capable of

developing independent solutions to concrete, complex problems.

§ 2 Admission requirements

(1) Students who have completed a six-semester bachelor’s degree in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health

& Performance with at least 180 CP (Credit Points) in the subject of Sport Science or a comparable

degree programme are admitted to the Master’s programme in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health &

Performance.

(2) Mandatory admission requirement is proof of scientific-medical studies of at least 9 CP.

(3) Applicants who have not obtained their qualification at an exclusively English-speaking institution or

who have English as their mother tongue must as a rule prove their knowledge of English at level B2 of

the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by means of one of the following proofs:

- B2 level endorsement on the general qualification for university entrance certificate,

- Language test IELTS (British Council): Score 6.5,

- Language test TOEFL (paper-based): Score 550,

- Language test TOEFL (computer-based): Score 213, or

- Language test TOEFL (Internet-based): Score 80.

(4) Admission to the Master’s programme in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance may be

subject to certain conditions, provided that these do not exceed 9 CP. The obligations and the time of

performance shall be determined by the Examination Board.

(5) Admission to the Master’s programme in Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance is not

possible for students who have already passed or definitively failed a Master’s programme in Sport &

Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance or a related or comparable programme at a scientific uni-

versity.

(6) The Examination Board shall determine whether the admission requirements pursuant to sections 1 to 5

have been met.

§ 3 Academic degree

If the Master’s examination is passed, the Faculty of Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum awards the

academic degree “Master of Science” (M. Sc.).

§ 4 Structure and modularisation of studies, types of courses, awarding of CPs

(1) The standard period of study is four semesters until the Master’s degree is reached. The Master’s pro-

gramme can be taken up in the winter semester.

(2) According to the list in Annex 1, the Master’s programme consists of six modules of 120 CP, of which

30 CP are for the Master’s thesis in module 6. Participation in an international or national sports science

congress is obligatory in the scope of module 4.

(3) A module is a teaching and learning unit which has been completed in terms of content and time and

which is successfully completed by passing the associated module examination. As a rule, a module

should last one semester, at most two semesters. The individual modules include the teaching and de-

velopment of a subject area and the corresponding competencies. All modules can be found in Annexes

1 and 2 (list of modules and course of studies) as well as in the current version of the module manual.

CP for modules 1 to 5 are only credited if the module examination associated with the module has been

passed with at least a sufficient performance and the study achievements listed in the current version of

the module manual have been successfully completed or the Master’s thesis in Module 6 has been suc-

cessfully completed. The module grades result from the respective grade of the module examination.

(4) CP correspond to the credits of the “European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System” (ECTS). The

number of CP to be acquired by a module results from the student workload. This includes the time

spent by the students on the study and examination achievements including preparation and follow-up

(self-study) as well as preparation and taking of the examinations. The average workload is 1800 work-

ing hours per academic year, converted into 60 CP (30 CP per semester). One CP corresponds to the

estimated workload of approx. 30 hours. The following course types are offered as part of the modular-

ised range of courses:

- “Seminars” serve the scientific deepening and can be offered for arbitrary topics of the field of ac-

tivity. They teach the scientific work within the thematic focus of the seminar. They are characterised

by a high degree of interactivity between teachers and students.

- “Seminars with supervised teaching practice” serve the analysis and staging of mediation processes

as well as the practical training and testing of teaching competence.

- “Practical courses” shall deepen theoretical and methodical basics by means of guided solutions of

complex tasks.

- “Project seminars” are events with a special form of organisation and include, among other things,

self-realisation. The aim is to prepare the development and presentation of research results within

and outside the university.

(5) The objectives and competences to be acquired in the respective modules and the resulting attendance

requirements can be found in the current version of the Module Manual of the Master’s Programme in

§ 5 Crediting and recognition of periods of study, academic achievements

and examination performance, placement in higher semesters

(1) Examination achievements that have been completed in an identical or comparable course of study at

other state or state-recognised higher education institutions or at state or state-recognised vocational

academies shall be credited upon application provided that no significant differences can be proven,

established or justified; this also applies upon application to achievements at higher education institu-

tions outside the scope of application of the German Basic Law. Upon application, the university may

credit other knowledge and qualifications on the basis of the documents submitted.

(2) Significant differences exist in particular if the acquired competences do not meet the requirements of

the Master’s programme Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance. This does not require a

schematic comparison, but an overall view and evaluation. The equivalence agreements approved by the

Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal

Republic of Germany (Kultusministerkonferenz) as well as agreements within the framework of the

higher education partnership must be observed for the recognition or crediting of study periods, aca-

demic achievements and examination results that were achieved outside the scope of the German Basic

Law. In case of doubt, the International Office and the Central Office for Foreign Education may also

be consulted.

(3) The Examination Board shall be responsible for any credits or recognition under sections 1 and 2. Before

determining whether significant differences exist, a professional representative should normally be

heard. The student must submit the documents required for crediting. As a rule, a decision is issued

within six weeks of submission of the complete documents, which must be accompanied by instructions

on how to appeal. If the recognition sought on the basis of an application within the meaning of section

1 is refused, the person submitting the application may request a review of the decision by the Rectorate.

(4) If academic and examination achievements are credited, the grades shall be adopted and included in the

calculation of the overall grade, provided that the grading systems are comparable. In the case of incom-

parable grading systems, the endorsement “passed” shall be included. The credit is indicated in the cer-

tificate and in the Transcript of Records.

(5) If the requirements of sections 1 and 2 are met, there is a legal entitlement to crediting or recognition.

(6) On the basis of an application pursuant to section 1 and on additional application by the student, a place-

ment in the subject semester shall be made, the number of which shall be determined by the scope of the

CP obtained by the recognition in relation to the 120 CP obtainable in the Master’s programme Sport &

Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance. If the decimal place is less than five, the whole semester

is rounded down, otherwise it is rounded up.

§ 6 Examination Board

(1) For the organisation of the examinations and the tasks assigned by these Examination Regulations, the

Faculty of Sport Science forms an Examination Board. The Examination Board consists of the chairper-

son, his/her deputy and three other members with voting rights. The chairman, the deputy chairman and

a further member are elected from the group of professors, one member from the group of academic

staff and one member from the group of students. Representatives are elected for the members of the

Examination Board. The head of the examination office is qua office member of the Examination Board.

The term of office of the members of the group of professors and of the group of scientific staff is three

years, the term of office of the student member is one year. Re-election is permitted.

(2) The Examination Board is an authority within the meaning of administrative procedure and administra-

tive procedural law.

(3) The Examination Board ensures that the provisions of the examination regulations are observed and

ensures that the examinations are carried out properly. In particular, it shall be responsible for deciding

on appeals against decisions taken in examination procedures and for compliance with time limits. In

addition, the Examination Board must report regularly, at least once a year, to the faculty on the devel-

opment of examinations and study times. This report shall be published in an appropriate form. It makes

suggestions for reforming the examination regulations and the study plan and discloses the distribution

of grades and overall grades. The Examination Board may delegate the performance of its duties to the

chairperson in all normal cases. This does not apply to decisions on appeals and the report to the faculty.

(4) The Examination Board has a quorum if at least two other members entitled to vote or their representa-

tives are present in addition to the chairperson or his/her deputy. It decides by simple majority. In the

event of a tie, the chairman shall have the casting vote. The student member of the Examination Board

is not involved in the assessment and crediting of study and examination achievements, the determina-

tion of examination tasks and the appointment of examiners and assessors.

(5) The members of the Examination Board have the right to attend the examinations.

(6) The meetings of the Examination Board are not open to the public. The members of the Examination

Board and their deputies shall be bound by official secrecy. If they are not in the public sector, the

chairperson of the Examination Board shall oblige them to maintain secrecy.

(7) The Examination Board may use the administrative assistance of the examination office in the perfor-

mance of its duties.

§ 7 Examiners

(1) The Examination Board appoints the examiners from among the persons entitled to administer an exam.

Exams may be administered by lecturers at the Faculty of Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum

and by persons experienced in professional practice and training in accordance with § 14 (2). Only those

persons may be appointed examiners who have acquired at least the scientific qualification correspond-

ing to the respective examination subject.

(2) The examiners are independent in their examination activities.

(3) The candidate may propose the examiner for the Master’s thesis, taking into account the provisions of §

14 (2). The candidate’s proposals should be taken into account wherever possible. However, the pro-

posals do not give rise to any claim.

(4) The chairperson of the Examination Board shall ensure that the names of the examiners are made known

to the candidates in good time before the date of the respective examination. A notice by posting is

sufficient. The principles of data protection are to be observed.

(5) Section 6 (6) sentences 2 and 3 shall apply mutatis mutandis to the examiners.

§ 8 Objectives, scope, type and evaluation of the Master’s examination

(1) By taking the Master's examination, the candidate should prove that he or she has acquired the basics of

his or her subject, a set of methodological instruments and a systematic orientation, that he or she has

an overview of technical contexts and is able to apply scientific methods and findings in the field of

sport.

(2) The Master’s examination consists of the module examinations in modules 1 to 5 according to Annex 1

and the Master’s thesis in module 6. Each module examination and the Master’s thesis must be passed

with at least “sufficient” (grade 4.0). The module examinations in modules 1 to 5 must be taken during

the course of study, taking into account § 4 (3).

(3) The module examinations of modules 1 to 5 are taken in English, alternatively on request in German.

The Master’s thesis must be written in English in accordance with § 14 (1). The module examinations 1

to 5 are taken in accordance with the Module Manual in its current form as an oral examination, written

exam, presentation or experiment:

- In an oral examination, the candidate should prove that he or she has sufficient knowledge in the

field under examination, recognises interrelationships and is able to classify specific questions in

these interrelationships. Oral examinations are generally held by at least two examiners. Oral exam-

inations are taken as group examinations or as individual examinations. The oral examination should

last between 15 and max. 45 minutes for each candidate. The essential objects and results of the

examination shall be recorded in the minutes. Before determining the grade, the examiners discuss

the grade. The candidate must be informed of the grade of the examination immediately after the

examination and the reasons for the grade must be given. Students who wish to take the same exam-

ination in a later examination period may be admitted as listeners depending on the space conditions,

provided that the candidate does not object. Admission does not extend to the consultation and an-

nouncement of the examination result.

- A written examination should prove that in a limited time and with limited aids, tasks from the area

of the module’s courses can be dealt with properly and suitable solutions can be found. Written ex-

aminations can be taken electronically at workstations.

The duration of a written examination is determined by the examiner according to the content of the

subject, taking into account the CP provided for the module, and is between one and two hours.

Multiple-choice tasks can also be assigned within the framework of written examinations. Multiple

choice is a format used in exams in which a question has multiple pre-formulated answers to choose

from. The evaluation criteria for multiple-choice tasks must be announced on the examination sheet

and 14 days before the examination (see also § 15, (2) and (3)).

- A presentation is lecture of a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 45 minutes on the basis of

a written elaboration. The students should prove that they are capable of working on a topic scientif-

ically, taking into account the context of the subject, and that they can present the results orally.

- In an experiment, students should develop a sports science problem in a limited time, implement it

methodically and evaluate and present the results in writing. This provides evidence that the contents

of the module, consisting of a repertoire of methodological and analytical techniques, can be applied

in the scope of a pilot study. This can be realised as group work. In this case, the areas of responsi-

bility must be clearly delineated from one another and assigned to a main person responsible. De-

pending on the subject focus, performance will be assessed by one of the professors of the Faculty

of Sport Science who is primarily responsible for the study programme and who will also determine

the procedure, duration and assessment criteria of the examination.

(4) The respective scope of examination and the processing times are determined for each module exami-

nation according to technical aspects, taking into account the CP intended for the respective module.

The final form of the examination performance in the case of alternative possibilities and the permitted

aids will be announced at the beginning of the semester in which the module takes place.

(5) Module examinations shall be assessed by examiners in accordance with § 7 (1) and (2) in accordance

with the assessment criteria set out in § 15 (1) to (3).

(6) The evaluation of a module examination should take place within a period of no more than six weeks.

§ 9 Admission to the module examinations

(1) For module examinations 1 to 5, a written application for admission must be submitted to the Examina-

tion Office of the Faculty of Sport Science at Ruhr University Bochum. The first module examination

can only be admitted if the following proofs are available:

- Enrolment at the Ruhr University Bochum for the Master’s programme Sport & Exercise Sciences

for Health & Performance or admission as a cross-registered student,

- a declaration that the candidate has not already passed a Master’s examination in the Master’s pro-

gramme Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance or an examination required under

these examination regulations in a programme related to or comparable to the Master’s programme

Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance; that he/she has not, or not finally, passed

his/her Master’s programme Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Performance, that he or she has

not lost his or her examination entitlement by missing a repetition period and that he or she is not at

another higher education institution within the scope of the German Basic Law in the same subject

or in another examination procedure in the same subject.

(2) For module examinations 1 to 3 and 5, admission shall be granted to those who can prove the respective

academic achievements of the module by recording the complete CP in the system for recording aca-

demic and examination achievements of Ruhr University Bochum in accordance with the list in Annex

1.

(3) Those who can prove their academic achievements in the courses “Lab & Field Experience”, “Applied

Experimental Studies & Diagnostics” and “Advanced Lab & Field Experience” by recording the com-

plete CP in the system for recording academic and examination achievements at Ruhr University Bo-

chum are admitted to Module 4.

(4) Admission to a module examination is forfeited if the requirements set out in sections 1 and 2 are not

met. Otherwise, admission may only be refused if the candidate has lost his or her entitlement to the

examination by missing an application deadline in accordance with § 10 (1).

§ 10 Time limits, omissions and withdrawal

(1) The deadlines for submitting applications for admission to module examinations 1 to 5 pursuant to § 9

(1) are set by the Examination Office of the Faculty of Sport Science at Ruhr University Bochum and

announced on a notice board. § 9 (1) and (2) regulate the admission requirements.

(2) Admissions to module examinations 1 to 5 become effective seven days before the respective examina-

tion date, provided that the candidate has not cancelled his/her registration in writing by this time and

all the evidence and academic performance required under § 9 (1) or (2) is available at the Examination

Office. An examination cancelled up to seven days before the examination date shall be deemed not to

have been registered. This can be done without giving reasons.

(3) If a withdrawal or omission is made after expiry of the period specified in section 2, the valid reasons

given for the withdrawal or omission must be notified immediately in writing to the Examination Board

of the Faculty of Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum and substantiated, otherwise the examination

performance will be assessed as “failed” (grade 5.0). If the candidate is ill, a medical certificate must be

presented and, in cases of doubt, a RUB medical officer’s certificate must be obtained. The illness of a

child to be cared for mainly alone is equivalent to the illness of the candidate. If the Examination Board

accepts the reasons, the examination in question will not be counted against the maximum number of

retaken examinations.

(4) The Examination Board will ensure that the exams are held within the time limits laid down in these

Examination Regulations. The examination dates are set by the Examination Office. The dates of the

module examinations in modules 1 to 5 must be announced by the Examination Office at least two weeks

in advance by notice.

(5) In the event of leaving the RUB and removal from the register of students, examinations registered prior

to this must be taken unless the registration has been revoked in accordance with sections 2 and 3 or a

justified withdrawal or omission recognised by the Examination Board is made, otherwise the examina-

tions are deemed to have been “failed” (grade 5.0).

§ 11 Deception, breach of regulations

(1) If a candidate attempts to influence the result of his or her academic and/or examination performance by

deception or unauthorised aids, the relevant examination performance shall be assessed as “failed”

(grade 5.0). In the case of oral examinations, the actual determination is made and recorded by the re-

spective examiner, in the case of written examinations by the supervisor. The evaluation is carried out

by the Examination Board and a fine of up to € 50,000 may be imposed. A candidate who interferes with

the proper conduct of the examination may be disqualified from continuing with the examination by the

examiner or supervisor after a warning. In this case, the examination performance in question will be

assessed as “failed” (grade 5.0). The reasons for the exclusion shall be recorded.

(2) In the event of multiple or other serious attempts of deception, the candidate may be excluded from

further examination services and removed from the register of students after having been heard before-

hand.

(3) The candidate must be informed immediately in writing of any incriminating decisions, be given reasons

for them and be provided with instructions on how to appeal.

§ 12 Compensation for disadvantages and statutory periods of protection

(1) If the candidate demonstrates, by means of a medical certificate, that he or she is unable to take all or

part of an examination in the prescribed form due to prolonged or permanent physical or mental disabil-

ity or chronic illness, the chairperson of the Examination Board must allow the candidate to take equiv-

alent examinations in another form.

(2) The statutory maternity protection regulations and periods, the periods of parental leave and the periods

of absence due to the care and upbringing of children within the meaning of § 25 (5) BAföG (Federal

Law concerning the Promotion of Education or Training) as well as due to the care of the spouse, regis-

tered civil partner or a relative in the straight line or a relative in the first degree of marriage shall be

taken into account.

§ 13 Admission to the Master’s thesis

(1) The Master’s examination, including the Master's thesis, should be completed by the end of the fourth

semester.

(2) The Master’s thesis is open to those who

- are enrolled at the RUB for the Master’s programme Sport & Exercise Sciences for Health & Per-

formance or are admitted as a cross-registered student,

- have submitted an application for admission pursuant to § 13 (3) to the Examination Office of the

Faculty of Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum,

- are not in a similar examination procedure at another university and have not finally passed or failed

a similar examination, and

- have successfully completed modules 1 to 5 and passed all module examinations with at least “suf-

(3) The application for admission must be submitted in writing to the Examination Office of the Faculty of

Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum, together with the required proofs as per section 2. The ap-

plication for admission to the Master’s thesis must be accompanied by an exposé, a provisional structure

and source list as well as a positive vote of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Sport Science.

(4) If the candidate is unable to produce a document required under section 2 in the prescribed manner, the

Examination Board may, upon request, permit proof to be furnished in another manner.

(5) Admission to the Master’s thesis must be refused if the requirements set out in section 2 are not met.

(6) Otherwise, admission may only be refused if the candidate has lost his/her entitlement to the examination

by missing an application deadline.

§ 14 Registration, acceptance and evaluation of the Master’s thesis

(1) The Master's thesis is an examination which concludes the scientific education. It should show that the

candidate is able to work independently on a problem from his/her subject using scientific methods

within a specified period of time. The Master’s thesis must be written in English and should have the

form of an international sports science publication. 30 CP are acquired through the passed Master’s

thesis.

(2) The Master’s thesis will be handed out and supervised by a supervisor appointed by the Examination

Board. Supervisors are examiners within the meaning of § 7 (1) and (2). One of the two supervisors or

examiners must be appointed from among the habilitated professors who are or have been teaching

independently at the Faculty of Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum. Supervision by an examiner

who does not belong to the faculty is permissible; this requires the approval of the chairperson of the

Examination Board or his/her deputy. If a Master’s thesis is supervised by an examiner who does not

belong to the faculty, the second supervisor must belong to the group of persons in accordance with §

14 (2) sentence 3.

(3) The student has the right to propose a topic and the supervision of the Master’s thesis. The right to

propose topics does not establish any legal claim. Upon request, the chairperson of the Examination

Board shall ensure that a candidate receives a topic for a Master’s thesis in good time. The topic of the

Master’s thesis is handed out by the chairperson of the Examination Board. The date of issue shall be

recorded.

(5) The processing time for the Master’s thesis is six months after issue of the topic. The task and scope of

the Master’s thesis must be limited in such a way that the deadline for processing the Master’s thesis

can be met.

(6) The topic can only be returned once and only within the first two months of the processing time. If the

Master’s thesis is repeated, the topic may only be returned if the candidate has not made use of this

option at the first attempt. In individual cases, the Examination Board may exceptionally extend the

processing time by up to six weeks at the justified request of the candidate. In the event of illness, the

deadline for submission of the Master’s thesis can be extended by up to six weeks on written application

by the candidate to the Examination Board. This requires the presentation of a medical certificate or, in

cases of doubt, a certificate from a medical officer. If the reasons for the illness are recognised, the

candidate will be informed of this in writing. The extension corresponds to the duration of the illness. If

the duration of the illness exceeds six weeks, the candidate is usually presented with a new topic. The

Examination Board decides on exceptions.

(7) The Master’s thesis must be submitted to the Examination Office in duplicate and in an auditable elec-

tronic form by the deadline. The time of delivery must be recorded. When submitting the Master’s thesis,

the candidate must declare in writing that he or she has written his or her paper independently and has

not used any other sources or aids than those stated, and has identified any quotations. The candidate

must also provide written assurance that digital images are identified as such, contain only the original

data and have in no case been processed to alter their content. If the Master’s thesis is not submitted by

the deadline, it will be assessed as “failed” (grade 5.0).

(8) The Master’s thesis must be evaluated independently by two examiners. One of the examiners should

be the person responsible for the topic and the supervision of the Master’s thesis. The second person

entitled to audit is appointed by the chairperson of the Examination Board. Each examiner shall award

a grade, which shall be made in accordance with § 15 (1) and shall be justified in writing. The overall

evaluation of the Master’s thesis is formed from the arithmetic mean of the individual evaluations. If the

difference is more than 2.0 grades or one grade is “failed” (grade 5.0) and the other grade is “sufficient”

(grade 4.0) or better, the Examination Board will appoint a third examiner to evaluate the Master’s thesis.

This examiner determines the final grade in the scope of the two given grade proposals.

(9) The evaluation procedure shall not exceed six weeks.

§ 15 Assessment of examination performance, formation of grades and passing the Master’s examina-

tion

(1) The grades of the individual examination performance shall be determined by the respective examiners.

The grades (1.0) to (5.0) are to be used for the evaluation. The interim values shown in the following

overview can be used for a differentiated evaluation of the examination performance. The grades (0.7),

(4.3), (4.7), (5.3) and (5.7) are excluded. Non-graded performance receives the rating “passed or

“failed”. An examination is passed if it has been assessed with a grade (4.0) or better, or “passed” in the

case of an ungraded examination performance.

(2) A written examination with only multiple-choice questions will be considered passed if at least 60 % of

the questions asked have been answered correctly or if at least 60 % of the total number of attainable

points have been achieved. If, on the basis of this regulation, a maximum of 20 % of the participants in

the examination pass the exam with at least “sufficient” (4.0), the pass mark will be modified. In this

case, a written examination is deemed to have been “passed” (4.0) if the average examination perfor-

mance of the candidates is not more than 22 % lower than the number of applicable questions to be

answered or points to be achieved.

(3) Negative points may not be awarded. If the candidate has answered the minimum number of tasks cor-

rectly and passed the examination, the grade is given if the additional tasks have been answered correctly

to the following extent or the additional points have been achieved to the following extent:

(4) If a written examination consists of both multiple-choice and other tasks, the multiple-choice tasks will

be evaluated according to sections 2 and 3. The other tasks shall be assessed in accordance with the

usual procedure for them. The grade is calculated from the weighted results of both parts of the task.

The weighting is based on the proportion of task types in the written examination.

(5) The Master’s examination is passed if the module examinations of modules 1 to 5 and the grade of the

Master’s thesis are at least “sufficient” (grade 4.0) and the 120 CP stipulated in the study regulations

have been achieved.

(6) The overall grade of the Master’s examination results from the following weighting of the module examina-

tions:

- Module 1: 10 %,

- Module 2: 10 %,

- Module 3: 10 %,

- Module 4: 20 %,

- Module 5: 25 %,

- Module 6 (Master thesis): 25 %.

(7) The overall grade of a passed Master's examination is as follows

- for a grade up to and including 1.5: “very good”,

- for a grade of 1.6 to 2.5: “good”,

- for a grade of 2.6 to 3.5: “satisfactory”,

- for a grade of 3.6 to 4.0: “sufficient”,

- for a grade that exceeds 4.0: “failed”.

(8) When forming the module grades, the grade of the Master’s thesis and the overall grade, only the first

decimal place after the decimal point is taken into account, all other places are deleted without rounding.

(9) Instead of the overall grade “very good” (1.0) according to section 4, the overall grade “excellent” is awarded

if all module examinations and the Master’s thesis have been assessed as “very good” (grade 1.0).

§ 16 Repeatability of module examinations and Master’s thesis

(1) Module examinations in modules 1 to 5 that have not been passed or are considered failed can be repeated

twice. A repeat examination shall be taken at the latest within the framework of the examination dates of the

following semester, taking into account section 5. Missed attempts in the same subject at other universities

will be credited.

(2) An examination is definitely not passed if all attempts have been assessed as “failed” (grade 5.0) or if

the candidate can no longer be admitted to an examination. In this case, the programme cannot be con-

tinued. The candidate will be removed from the register of students.

(3) Repeat examinations in modules 1 to 5, if there is no possibility of compensation in the event of their

final failure, shall be assessed by at least two examiners in accordance with § 7 (1) and (2). Oral repeat

examinations shall be conducted by two examiners or by one examiner in accordance with § 7 (1) and

(2) in the presence of an expert assessor.

(4) The Master’s thesis can be repeated once. A new topic is to be set for this purpose. A second repetition

is excluded. The Examination Board determines the deadlines within which the Master’s thesis is to be

repeated. The repetition must take place at the latest in the semester following the unsuccessful attempt

in accordance with section 5.

(5) The periods for repetition laid down in sections 1 and 4 shall be extended:

- for the care and upbringing of minor children as defined by § 25 (5) BAföG (Federal Law concerning

the Promotion of Education or Training) by three semesters per child,

- for participation as an elected representative in bodies of the university, the student body, the student

representation of the student body or the student unions by a total of up to four semesters,

- for the performance of the duties as Equal Opportunities Officer by up to a maximum of four semes-

ters,

- by the time of the effects of a disability or a serious illness on the prolongation of study periods, and

- by up to three semesters for the time during which the student takes responsibility for close relatives

in need for care and support.

(6) The notice of a failed Master’ examination shall be issued to the candidate in writing by the Examination

Board. The decision shall be accompanied by a notice of appeal.

§ 17 Certificate, Master’s certificate, Transcript of Records and Diploma Supplement

(1) After the Master’s examination has been passed and the complete examination documents have been

submitted, a certificate in German will be issued no later than eight weeks after the last examination

performance has been determined, containing the individual grades of the modules relevant to the ex-

amination, the grade of the Master’s thesis and the overall grade. The certificate is to be signed by the

Chairperson of the Examination Board and bears the seal of the Faculty of Sport Science of the Ruhr

University Bochum. The date of submission of the Master's thesis must be stated as the date of the

certificate.

(2) With the certificate, the candidate receives the Master’s certificate in German with the date of the cer-

tificate. It shall certify the award of the academic degree “Master of Science” in accordance with § 3.

The Master’s certificate is signed by the dean or the chairman of the Examination Board of the Faculty

of Sport Science of Ruhr University Bochum and bears the seal of the Faculty of Sport Science.

(3) With the certificate, the graduate receives a Diploma Supplement in German and English, which informs

about the individual professional profile of the completed course of studies and indicates an ECTS grade

for the final grade. In addition, a Transcript of Records written in German will be issued, listing all

selected module events and academic achievements.

(4) The certificate as well as the Master’s certificate will also be issued in English upon request.

(5) Students who leave the university without a degree will receive a document on the total number of study

achievements and examination results (Transcript of Records) on application.

III. Final provisions

§ 18 Invalidity of Master’s examination, withdrawal of academic degree

(1) If the candidate has cheated in examination and this fact only becomes known after the certificate has

been handed over, the Examination Board may subsequently correct the assessments and grades for

those examination performances where the deception occurred and declare the examination to have been

failed in whole or in part.

(2) If the prerequisites for admission to an examination were not fulfilled without the candidate having

attempted to cheat, and if this fact becomes known only after the certificate has been issued, this defi-

ciency will be remedied by passing the examination. If the candidate has deliberately unlawfully ob-

tained admission, the Examination Board shall decide on the legal consequences in accordance with the

Administrative Procedure Act for the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

(3) Before a decision is taken, the person concerned must be given the opportunity to express his or her

views.

(4) The incorrect examination certificate must be confiscated and, if necessary, a new one issued.

(5) A decision pursuant to section 1 and section 2 sentence 2 shall only be admissible within five years of

the date of the award of the degree. The period between the initiation and termination of an administra-

tive procedure to examine the withdrawal of the award of degrees shall not be counted towards the five-

year period pursuant to sentence 2.

(6) If an examination has been declared failed in its entirety, the faculty must revoke the academic degree

and confiscate the certificate.

§ 19 Inspection of the examination files

(1) Within one year of the completion of the Master’s examination procedure, the candidate will be granted

access to his/her written examination papers, the related assessments of the examiners and the examina-

tion protocols within a reasonable period of time upon application to the Examination Board. Deadlines

within the framework of an objection procedure shall remain unaffected by this.

(2) The application must be submitted to the chairperson of the Examination Board. The chairperson shall

determine the place and time of inspection in agreement with the applicant.

§ 20 Entry into force and publication

These Examination Regulations shall enter into force on the day following their publication in the Official

Notices of Ruhr University Bochum.
