Notes from Principal VensIn our continuing efforts to support the well-being of all Southview students, we will conduct universal social, emotional, and behavioral screening during the week of October 25th. All students who agree to participate will complete a brief, online survey during fourth period.

Assessing the social, emotional, and behavioral functioning of our students helps promote student success, allows us to better understand the needs of all our students, and aids us in planning for the future.

Your child does not have to participate. Participation in the survey is voluntary. If you opt your child out of the screening or your child decides to not participate, it will not impact their access to services and/or standing at school. All collected information will be kept confidential. Only individuals, like school counselors, who have a legitimate need to know survey results will be granted access to the data. Students completing the survey can skip any item – there are no forced response questions. Students can withdraw from or quit the survey at any time without penalty or consequence.

All survey items reflect social, emotional, and behavioral screening instrument questions that have previously been validated. NO survey items will: (a) ask your child about drug/alcohol use, (b) reference sex, or (c) solicit information about previous traumatic experiences your child may have encountered.

If you’d like to opt your child out of completing the survey, please email Cindy Edwards ([email protected]) by Monday, October 25th.

Opt-Out Form

Dear Parents and Guardians:

In our continuing efforts to support the well-being of our students, we will conduct a universal screening of social, emotional, and behavioral health in the upcoming week. Students will self-rate on a brief series of questions and corresponding rating scales. Assessing the social, emotional, and behavioral functioning of our students helps promote student success, allows us to better understand the needs of all our students, and aids us in planning for the future. We are always working to support the needs of our students, including school-wide programs such as our positive behavior intervention and supports. It is important that your child feels that academic learning is their focus at school and that the adults they work with each day are doing all they can to create a safe and supportive environment.

Students have the option to opt out. If you choose for your child not to participate in the screener, complete and return this form to Cindy Edwards, [email protected] Thank you, Kasey Vens,Principal I understand that my child’s school will be conducting a universal assessment of behavioral health. I wish to opt out of this assessment. I understand that by signing this form, my student will not be included in the school-wide screener. _____________________________ _____________________________ Name of Parent/Guardian Name of Student

Random Drug Testing

After a one-year hiatus, the district has restarted the random drug testing program. Although we do not announce testing dates in advance, the program operates on a twice per month basis. Approximately one week prior to each testing date, twenty students are randomly selected to participate.

The selected students are taken from the PowerSchool consent list, which includes those who participate in extracurricular activities. This might include activities like driving to school, attending dances, and participating in sports and clubs.

We would like to remind everyone that this program exists to keep students healthy and safe at school. We believe it gives students a very simple reason to say no and refrain from taking illegal substances during peer pressure situations.

Additional Academic Support

Students in need of additional support to meet competency rates on end-of-course exams for graduation have an opportunity to participate in after-school support. We understand that students need support during this time, and based on the demands of these tests, Southview hosts after school intervention in specific content areas to reinforce what is being taught in the classrooms. Letters were emailed to identified students and parents who would benefit from taking advantage of this intervention. Please check your email. If your child is not in need of intervention, you will not have an email.

Students will have support from 2:30-3:30 pm; teachers will be focused on test-taking skills, content knowledge reinforcement, and state released test questions for review. Teachers will begin test prep sessions on Tuesday, October 12. Sessions will continue until December 2. It is our recommendation that students attend regularly to improve.

Additional online resources for test prep are available at: https://oh-ost.portal.cambiumast.com/families.html

Athlete of the Week

The Cougar Athlete of the Week is senior soccer player Isiah Moores. Head coach Andy Kufel commented, "Isiah has had an amazing senior season so far while also taking on more of a leadership role this year. Isiah has represented the Sylvania Southview Soccer Program for the past three seasons as a varsity letter winner and has earned All NLL and All District recognition his sophomore and junior year. His passion and dedication to the game is contagious. Isiah has 15 goals and 6 assists this season and has really stepped up his focus in the final stretch of the 2021 season, recording 8 goals and 2 assists in the last 7 games. Isiah has had some great performances this season, but most notably is the recent back to back 2 goal games in the NLL vs Northview and Perrysburg. Congratulations Isiah! "
