Dear Beach Middle School Family, Wow—it's amazing to think we are already a month into the school year. It has been a great start to our school year as we have welcomed the 6th graders to Beach and welcomed back our 7th and 8th graders. I have been impressed by the amount of family support for our students here at BMS. We had a wonderful turnout for all of our Open Houses. Also, our par- ent meetings, athletic and music events have had awesome attendance, for this I thank you. We have several new staff joining us this year. We are a stronger team because of them! Our monthly newsletter is hot off the press and I hope that you will find it informative about all aspects of the middle school experience. I wanted to highlight that we have two Parent-Teacher Conferences coming up in October: Wednesday, October 16, from 3:45- 7:00 PM and Tuesday, October 22, also from 3:45-7:00 PM. Our conferences are Round Robinstyle-first come, first served. I strongly encourage you to attend. “Counselor’s Corner”

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. The Counseling Depart-ment staff this year are: Mara Kelly, our social worker, Claire Talarico, our school psychologist. Her time is shared between Beach and South Ele-mentary. Mr. Strzyzewski is our full-time counselor in the building and Mrs. Lombardo works part-time in the counseling office.

Our aim is to make school a positive experience for all students. We want every child to learn in a com-fortable and safe environment. We are here to help individuals with academic, emotional, and social issues. Please let your child know that they can ap-proach anyone in the counseling de-partment, and they will be fully sup-ported in whatever way possible.

Please call or email us with any questions or concerns.

BMS ATHLETICS

The athletic season at the middle school level is underway! The middle school football, volleyball, cross country, and field hockey teams have all worked very hard in a short amount of time to begin game play. With that being said, we have begun our bi-weekly eligibility checks. Stu-dents must be passing 5 out of 6 clas-ses in order to participate in game action. The academic policy is two D's equal one F, so if a student had 4 D's they would be deemed ineligible. As we always remind students...they are STUDENT-athletes (with the stu-dent coming first). Please help your child make sure they are taking care of business in the classroom. We are looking forward to watching all of our fall teams compete! Parents, we need your help with running events this year. This includes taking tickets, working con-cessions, running the clock, etc. Please look for emails for sign-up opportunities! Finally, all middle school ath-letes must be enrolled in Final Forms and all documents must be electroni-cally signed by parents and students. Should this not be complete, your child may be held out of practice and/or games. Thanks for your help with this. For more information, vis-it chelsea-mi.finalforms.com.

Have a great fall everyone!

Ten friendly reminders regarding before and after school

etiquette at the Beach Middle School bus transfer.

1. Please remember to be patient and respect traffic flow i.e. not double parking or creating your own parking spot.

2. Please do not load in the street-use the designated pick up points.

3. Please do not drive around the backside of BMS through the bus staging area.

4. Be cautious when entering the parking lot, many students are walking across it to meet their parents. Keep in mind the transfer site is for students K-12 in the Chelsea Schools.

5. When picking up your students, please leave your dog(s) at home. We have many students with substantial allergies and this puts them at risk.

6. If assistance is needed, please see one of the adults at the transfer. Do not call into the school offices which are very busy at the end of the day.

7. Do not arrange for another adult to pick up your student unless it has been clearly communicated to them be-forehand.

8. Do not pick up your student(s) in the cemetery located behind the building- this should go without saying.

9. Use common sense- inclement weather will mean more parents are picking up their student(s) afterschool so plan your time accordingly.

10. There is no parking on the south side on Mayer Drive. You can park on the school side but not on the other side of the street.

Thank you for your support!

Beach Middle School will have Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 17, from 3:45-7:00 PM and Tuesday, October 22, from 3:45-7:00 PM. No appointment is neces-sary. Our conferences are “Round Robin” style-first come, first served. Parents should enter at the front of the building by the school office. Information will be given to parents arriving for conferences by the office door area. All teachers are conferencing in either the cafeteria or gym. We suggest that a typical Parent/Teacher Conference should last approximately five minutes per teacher. If you need to hold a more in-depth conference, you should set up an appointment to do so other than these conference times. We enjoy joining with you to maximize your child’s education and look forward to meeting you at our conferences.

LEADERSHIP CLASS

Leadership is an elective class where 8th graders focus on leadership skills and principles, in-cluding servant leadership. We do in-class activities, choose school-wide events, hear from guest speak-ers, participate in community ser-vice, and raise money for a worthy cause. We enjoyed coming up with the Spirit Week dress days during homecoming week! Here they are: Tuesday, October 1: Sports Day Wednesday October 2: White out Thursday, October 3: Red White and Blue Day Friday, October 4: Blue and Gold/Bulldog Day The students brainstormed a list of potential things students would like us to raise funds for this academic year. They came up with many options and then asked all students to complete a survey of their wishes. Our Beach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders chose a permanent outdoor volleyball net. Leadership students this quarter are excited to work to raise money for this legacy gift for all Beach students. We will be hosting a bake sale on Wednes-day, Thursday, and Friday 9/25-9/27 after school until 3:30, with all types of treats home baked by the students. Leadership is most thrilled to host a Haunted Hallway and Dance on Thursday, October 24th. This will be open to all! We are up and running and looking forward to hosting fun ac-tivities for Beach!

2019 WEB

6th Graders introduced to Beach MS with “Where Everyone Belongs” Program

Before the official first day of school at Beach, the WEB program welcomed our incoming 6th grad-ers into the building for orientation. Over 95% of 6th graders flooded the doors while 50 8th grade leaders greeted them with energy and smiles. The goal was to help our new students feel welcome and get them get comfortable with their new school. WEB has been a part of Beach's tradition for a decade and is led by Mike Lott, Brian Boos, Amy Do-ma and David Slusser. The program trains eighth-graders leaders to work with small groups of sixth-graders with the goal of building relationships among the groups. “I moved to Chelsea in 6th grade and I was so nervous,” said WEB leader Keegan. “My WEB leader changed my whole outlook on my new school. I felt so comfortable to be here," he remembers. Mr. Lott explains that the WEB leaders do help the sixth-graders feel more comfortable starting a new grade in a new building, but also fosters relationships among grades all year long.

“The orientation day activities focus on learning each other’s names, playing fun team building games, learning strategies to be successful at Beach, and a fun-themed school tour,” said Mr. Boos.

Over 180 6th graders gathered in the gymnasium and formed circles where they learned each others' names and took turns answering fun 'get to know you' questions. “Coming in before school started helped us feel less nervous and know what to expect on the first day,” said sixth-graders Abby and Charlotte. WEB leaders will be role models for the sixth-graders all year long. Each WEB leader has another eighth grade peer as their partner and checks in regularly with their small group of 6th graders. The high school offers a similar program called Link Crew for freshmen.
