First welcome our new Director of Memory Care and Programming, Aaron Drizin. Aaron joins us from our Belmont Village in Cardiff, California. During Aaron’s time at our Cardiff community he served as an Enrichment Leader and worked in partnership with the community’s Executive Director to continue developing new programs for the Circle of Friends and Neighborhood. Aaron not only worked as an Enrichment Leader, but also chose to work with the PALS in the Neighborhood. His goal was to gain additional insight into the challenges these employees encounter every day and to have a better understanding of the issues seniors deal with when transitioning to assisted living care. Secondly, we are pleased to have John Stanley joining our culinary team. John will be assuming our chef manager position. He has a lengthy career history in the food service industry, most recently with Woodlands Country Club. John takes pride in creating delicious and unique culinary delights. We are so pleased to introduce our two newest members of Belmont Village Hunters Creek family. And so the village grows ... Belmont Village residents make Facebook-after a fun visit to “Amish Craftsman” followed by a trip to an old-fashioned soda fountain and antique shop-“Yale Pharmacy” in the Heights.

Jimmy Pietro and Wally Casas withHannah Holiday, always smiling!

It would be easy to highlightone of these residents withoutthe other, but the friendship thathas developed and the joy theybring to others is unmistakablytheir own brand. Although noone smiles as much as Jimmy, his friend Wally would run aclose second.

Wally Casas came to Belmontslightly before Jimmy Pietro. Heis proud of his career as apharmacist and his collegedegree from University ofHouston. Wally grew up inBenavides, Texas, and knows theimportance of hard work, solidfamily values and playingfootball in Texas! He had awonderful marriage to his love,Norma Jean, who passed awayseveral years ago, and has fourlovely children. His daughter,Velma Jean, lives nearby andhelps with activitiesoccasionally. Wally’s faith is veryimportant to him and he talksabout Catholicism with ease andpride, another value he andJimmy share.

James Frances Pietro (as heconstantly reminds us is his fullname), came to us from SouthCarolina but was born and raisedin Beaver Falls, PA. He is proud ofhis Midwest roots and his degreefrom Geneva College. Growingup, Jimmy was a talented footballplayer and went on to coach aftercollege. Jimmy married the love ofhis life, Gilda, and they had tenchildren! He attributes his faith inGod and his devoted wife forbeing able to raise ten children. He attends mass every Sundaywith his son, Robert.

On Sound Footing-TheHealth of Your Feet

Your feet are pretty small, considering they have to supportthe entire height and weight ofyour body. But they can cause bigproblems. So pay some attentionto your feet.

“Feet don’t get any respect,”says Dr. Marian T. Hannan, whostudies foot disorders at theInstitute for Aging Research atHebrew SeniorLife. “They’re sortof the Rodney Dangerfield of thehuman body.”

Each step you take involves aremarkably intricate network ofbones, muscles, tendons andligaments. That complexity—combined with all the weight theycarry—accounts for why feet canbe so prone to problems, including bone fractures, arthritisand plantar fasciitis, a swelling ofthe thick band of tissue that runsalong the bottom of the foot.

Excess weight puts extra stresson your feet. Poorly fitting shoesand other footwear are commoncauses of foot problems as well.

Health problems can also affectthe feet. Lack of feeling in yourfeet could be a sign of a seriousillness, such as diabetes or a nervedisorder. See your health careprovider if you have unusualnumbness in your feet or footpain that is severe, comes onsuddenly, or doesn’t improve withsimple measures such as rest orover-the-counter pain

medications. You can help keep your feet

healthy by wearing comfortable,well-fitting shoes. Wash your feetregularly (especially between yourtoes), wear clean socks and try torotate your shoes to give themtime to air out.

“The more you exercise yourfeet, the better the blood flow is tothe feet, and that’s important forgeneral foot health,” Hannan says.

Walking is a great way toexercise your feet. You can also tryspecific foot exercises. Sit downand rotate your ankles in bothdirections. Sit in a chair and curlyour toes, then spread them out. This helps stretch and strengthenyour feet to help you balance.Seeing what someone’s foot lookslike is incredibly informative,Hannan says. “I think we’re goingto be seeing a lot more health careproviders paying attention to thefeet,” she predicts.
