Notes from Fr. John St. Kieran Catholic Church Seventh Sunday of Easter May 24, 2020 “They have kept your word.” — John 17:6b T oday the Church celebrates the Lord’s Ascension into heaven. Each week as I reflect on the Scripture, I am struck by how relevant it still is for us today. In the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel today, Jesus meets with his disciples and tells them he will be with them until the end of time. And then he disappears. The Disciples are dumbfounded. They are caught looking up to heaven wondering what Jesus meant. I feel our faith is tested in the same way as the Disciples. We have been taught that Jesus is with us. If we put our faith in him, we have nothing to fear. And then a life changing pandemic hits and we are left dumbfounded. We ask where is God in this crisis? How will we go on? The Gospels used for the Ascension answer our questions. First, God is still with us. The Holy Spirit is in each of us guiding our way. Second, we have been entrusted with God’s power and we are told to use it. We go on knowing that God is with us as he has always been. So, we need to all shake ourselves out of our paralysis and move forward in Christ Jesus. This past week we were given the beginning steps necessary for the reopening of our churches. At first, I was caught dumbfounded. Though all the guidelines make sense as we continue to deal with the Covid-19 crisis and try to keep people safe, the guidelines seemed overwhelming to me. As a first step I shared them with the staffs of both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Then this past weekend I spoke briefly about the guidelines at the end of our weekly mass. As more people began to know what was going to be necessary for the reopening of our churches the burden seemed to lighten. Don’t get me wrong, it is still going to be a major task, but with more people on board the guidelines seem less daunting. Thanks to those who have already responded and are able to participate in the reopening process and thanks to those whose job will be to pray for the success of our work. So here again I would like to state what we need to do to get our churches open again. We will have to form committees for cleaning/hygiene, and attendance and tracking, and counting of participants attendance and tracking, and counting of participants at our liturgies. Just so everyone has a sense of what that means. Under cleaning we will be required to clean the church after every liturgical service we hold. This means using acceptable cleaners which will kill the Covid virus on all hard services including pews, doors, windows, floors, etc. If we decide to open the bathrooms, and I use the word if, it means cleaning the bathroom after any individual uses it. Under attendance and tracking all attendance at masses and services will be by ticket only. The Archdiocese will give us a number that they will allow in our churches based on a six-foot circle between participants. We will be limited to that number for attendance. Those wishing to attend a service will have to call the office and give their name and an email address so the ticket can be sent to the person requesting it. Only one church door will be open for entrance into the church and a ticket will be matched with the name on the list that the door person has been given. No ticket means no entrance. Why the registration and tickets? It allows us to contact all who were present in a service if we find out someone at the service was sick with the Covid virus. Finally, once you are in church there will be designated spots where people can sit. This will be the work of the counter or host. The pews will be marked so people know where to sit. Those marks will be six feet apart and everyone will be asked to find a mark to sit on. A family of six who live together may still sit together but depending where they sit other seats will not be available. Those who do not follow the guidelines set up will not be allowed back into another service. Though these guidelines seem harsh, they are enacted for the health and safety of all of us. So now you can see some of what we need to put in place before we can go forward. Anyone who is able to volunteer must participate in a webinar at archchica- go.org/coronavirus/reopening-training. I also encour- age any parishioners who want to know more to participate in the training info as well. Together we will eventually reopen our churches.

Archdiocese of Chicago

Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-2030 312.534.8230 archchicago.org May 13, 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, These fifty days of Easter, leading to Pentecost, are marked by unprecedented suffering, as humanity has fallen victim to a perilous contagion. In addition to the threats to our physical wellbeing, we are suffering spiritually as the Covid-19 pandemic has required restrictions of our worship and active participation in the sacramental life of the Church. Surely, there have been moments in history when governments and rulers have persecuted Christians and banned their public worship. This is not one of them. Rather, the present restrictions come in response to an extreme medical emergency as local, state and federal authorities – specifically public health officials – legitimately fulfil their responsibilities to safeguard human life and the common good. They have based their reasonable guidance on careful consideration of empirical data and the best available disease-mitigation practices as they seek to contain the pandemic’s rampage through our communities. While everyone must exercise good citizenship in observing these restrictions, I call on the Catholic faithful, as advocates for justice and charity, to comply with these regulations. From the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper,” a truth that must inspire us as we are called to sacrifice. We should also be motivated to cooperate with public safety norms, given our reverence for life and human dignity. This is, at its heart, a moment to proclaim the breadth and depth of what it means to be pro-life, particularly as this virus preys on the most vulnerable in our midst. The good news is that a plan for a gradual reopening of our churches has now taken shape, as I note below. However, since our movements will be restricted as that plan unfolds in different phases, your pastors and bishops will continue for the present time to offer Mass in private each day and to livestream and broadcast Masses from our parishes and the archdiocese. I am particularly grateful to ABC-TV, Univision and Polvision in Chicago for giving us airtime every Sunday. These celebrations surely are not the same as gathering in our churches for Mass, but I know from hearing from many parishioners that they provide a great deal of solace and support in this time of uncertainty. We must be honest. We expect this situation to continue for some weeks, and any plan for reopening our churches for public worship must include every precaution to ensure public gatherings do not create a second wave of contagion, thus squandering the gains made through our sacrifice in these days. With those realities in mind, I am heartened to announce that we have reached an agreement with the Office of the Governor on a multi-phase Plan for re-opening our churches for the celebration of the sacraments, private prayer, adoration and Mass. As I share the Plan with you, both by way of an Executive Summary and the full Plan in the following pages, I want to assure you of my prayers for you and your family’s personal, material and spiritual wellbeing. I also express my appreciation to the many people on the archdiocesan staff and in the Office of the Governor for the many hours they have given to designing and fine tuning this agreement. Again, I call on all Catholics to seize this moment to exercise faith-filled citizenship in a way that reflects our deep regard for life, our calling as disciples of Jesus and our love of country. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Archbishop of Chicago

Parish News & Events

May, 2020 RE: Parish Financial Update Dear St. Kieran Parish Family, It is encouraging to see so many people engaged in the life of our parish, supporting one another during this difficult time. From our on-line prayer groups to the numbers connecting to our YouTube Masses to our continued ministries supporting on-going care for those in need, our parish family remains united as we bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community. The Finance Council and I want to ensure you have a clear understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parish operating income and expenses. We project a 44% shortfall in this year’s budget due in large part to decreased weekly offertory, but also due to the cancel-lation of some of our spring events and fundraisers. The Sunday offertory since March 15 (2020), including the Easter Collection, is 54% below the amount for the same period last year. While we have been able to lower some expenses, the wages of our employees continue to represent a large share of our operating costs. Our parish staff is working hard to maintain the life of our parish and address the needs of our more than four hundred parishioners. A substantial cushion has been built up in our savings account and is currently being used to maintain our payments to the Archdiocese of Chicago (these payments include monthly charges for Archdiocesan Assessment, PRMAA or Priests’ Retirement Fund, and Property & Casualty Insurance.) With the assistance of the Archdiocese of Chicago, our parish applied for and received money from the CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program. In accordance with the provisions of the CARES Act, these funds may only be used to cover payroll and utility expenses over the next two months. Any unused funds at the end of that two month period will be returned. In addition, it is hoped that much of the CARES Act monies will be forgiven. The Finance Council and I understand that this is a time of economic uncertainty and are truly grateful to those who have been able to continue supporting our parish. St. Kieran remains one family of faith; all members of the Body of Christ are vital to the us all. May God bless you, your loved ones and our entire St. Kieran Parish Family. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. John Siemianowski, Pastor St. Kieran Catholic Church

Notes from Fr. Tom

M ost of us still talk about ‘Ascension Thursday’; but for a number of years, our Bishops have decided that this is too important a feast not to give more people the opportunity to consider what this event means for us as followers of Jesus – so we celebrate the Ascension on a Sunday. So why is this feast significant? First and foremost, the Ascension is not a feast about saying good-by to Jesus. The paradox

of faith is that Jesus left this world in order to become more present. By this miracle, we are not limited to the historical Jesus as the sole means by which we can come to know the extent of God’s love. Jesus ascended so that he might fill all things with his Spirit - the ‘good news’ is that all of the universe, including you and me, is trusted by God and is the means by which we meet God. We just don’t let ourselves think this way often enough. We tend to think that the choices for good that we make as just being nice, or polite or helpful when in fact they are the real presence of the Risen Christ reaching out into the world of the here and now and being present, embracing this world and raising it up in love to be with God. We each have a role to play in the continuing plan of God. Especially in these days of forced isolation when we feel all alone and abandoned, see in your willingness to sacrifice for the good of others something holy. Recognize in each person’s reaching out to you to check on your wellbeing, Jesus’ promise to be with you fulfilled. Being a ‘resurrection people’ means believing that goodness never dies or leaves, but rather lives forever. We and those that we love and those who have loved us are a part of this truth and they remain with us always. So stop looking for Jesus somewhere out there and see in the opportunities when you can choose good or when others touch your lives with divine love - see Jesus not gone, but here among us still. Father Tom K.

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!!

Father John, the Pastoral Staff, and I wish to thank all of our parishioners who so generously continue to give their weekly and monthly dona-tion amounts during this time when our church remains temporarily closed. Through your thoughtfulness, we have been able to maintain our payments of our monthly bills, both locally and to the Archdiocese, and to cover our payroll for the employees of the parish. I am over-whelmed with your dedication and support of our parish family. God Bless you all!

Cardinal Cupich has canceled, suspended, or postponed all church events through the end of May. This means that Religious Education classes have been canceled, and First Com-munion and Confirmation have been post-poned. Parents should review the last three chapters of student textbooks with their children, as it is unlikely that we will make up our last three scheduled classes for the academic year. The Religious Education Office will reach out to affected families as soon as events are rescheduled. Please take this opportunity to strengthen your family’s prayer life. There are many re-sources online for at-home prayer and worship. If you need help locating these resources, e-mail the R.E. Office at: [email protected]. Please stay healthy and safe.

Dear Friends, Catholic Charities food pantries are seeing record demand because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. Our food pantry at St. Irenaeus in Park Forest is serving higher numbers of families than usual, many of them first-time clients who have suddenly found themselves out of work. At the same time, we are finding it harder and harder to acquire some common food items. As a result, we cannot provide families with as much food as they really need. We need your help to ensure that our pantry shelves stay stocked. Here’s what you can do…. • Make a Monetary Donation or Fundraise for Catholic Charities:

Donate or Fundraise online at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ CovidResponseSouthRegion or mail a check payable to Catholic Charities to 12731 S. Wood Street, Blue Island 60406. • Make an In-Kind Donation: Organize a food drive, collect or purchase food for our food

pantry at St. Irenaeus or donate items from your home. Donation delivery and/or pick up can be arranged by contacting our office at 708-205-9661.

We are grateful for the outpouring of generosity we have already seen. There can be no better time when we can come together to help feed those in our community who have been so seriously impacted through no fault of their own. We ask for your continued support and prayers as we struggle to feed our neighbors in need in the south suburbs. With gratitude, Christopher Torres Regional Director *If you organize a food drive, these are items most in need: Canned vegetables Peanut butter Rice Canned soup Jelly Macaroni and cheese Dry cereal Pasta Tuna Oatmeal Pasta sauce Canned fruit and fruit juice
