St. Kieran Catholic Church Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 14, 2019 Christ Jesus . . . is the head of the body, the church. — Colossians 1:15, 18 Notes from Fr. John READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ex 1:8-14, 22; Ps 124:1b-8; Mt 10:34 — 11:1 Tuesday: Ex 2:1-15a; Ps 69:3, 14, 30-31, 33-34; Mt 11:20-24 Wednesday: Ex 3:1-6, 9-12; Ps 103:1b-4, 6-7; Mt 11:25-27 Thursday: Ex 3:13-20; Ps 105:1, 5, 8-9; 24-27; Mt 11:28-30 Friday: Ex 11:10 — 12:14; Ps 116:12-13, 15, 16bc, 17-18; Mt 12:1-8 Saturday: Ex 12:37-42; Ps 136:1, 23-24, 10-15; Mt 12:14-21 Sunday: Gn 18:1-10a; Ps 15:2-5; Col 1:24-28; Lk 10:38-42 T oday we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the first reading from the book of Deuteronomy we are told that God’s commands are near to us. We don’t have to search far to know God’s wishes. The writer of Deuteronomy tells us that God’s wishes are written in our heart. All we have to do is listen. Easier said than done, when we have many other outside voices telling us to do something else. Something that might be completely opposite of what God wants. We are called to discern these voices and as Christians we use the Scripture and tradition to help us make those decisions. The hardest part about God’s call comes when we don’t want to hear what is being asked of us. I would like to paraphrase the Gospel teaching on love of God and neighbor here. There was a woman whose car broke down on the interstate and was stranded on the shoulder of the road. A priest was passing by. A very busy priest was passing by and said I don’t have time for this. Surely someone else will help her. After that, hundreds of good church going men and women from many churches passed by, but they had way to much church work to attend to, so they ignored her as well. Finally, a foreigner passed by. He was undocumented, so because of our laws he was considered illegal. He saw the woman and stopped because he knew what it felt like to be invisible and in need. Because he was skilled with automobiles since his car was over twenty years old he was able to fix the woman’s car and get her on the way. He even let her use his cell phone knowing that he didn’t have enough money for the next bill. So, who was the woman’s neighbor. Faith impacts life. If it doesn’t then it isn’t real. Let’s all pray for a faith that doesn’t then it isn’t real. Let’s all pray for a faith that leads to action. Beginning this week, we will no longer have a Saturday morning communion service at St. Kieran. The numbers of attendees have dropped to less than ten. Part of Renew My Church is the understanding that our faith is communal and should be shared with others. Over two years ago we combined our morning mass with St. Agnes. Everyone agreed that they drive anyway to church, so for the sake of a larger worshiping community the St. Agnes parishioners joined St. Kieran for morning mass. They were welcomed by the St. Kieran parishioners and given roles in the morning liturgy as Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors. I am proud of both parishes for accepting this change and tell the story often when at archdioce- san meetings. Now I am asking those who come on Saturday to do the same. St. Joseph Parish in Homewood has a Saturday morning mass at 8:30 AM. A number of our parishioners already attends this mass. I hope that those who have participated in the Saturday morning communion services would now join our neighbors in Homewood. It is another way that we can get to know are neighbors. I am sure there may be other churches that have Saturday morning masses as well, but I know of St. Joe’s because of those parishioners who already attend. Finally, thanks to the parishioners and deacons who led this service for so many years. This weekend we are having our summer mission appeal at St. Kieran. Fr. Sospeter Shole will be joining us for our weekend liturgies and make the appeal. Please be as generous as you can in the second collection for the summer mission appeal. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The word of the LORD is very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts (Deuteronomy 30:10-14). Psalm — Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live (Psalm 69) or Psalm 19. Second Reading — Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15-20). Gospel — The Samaritan traveler was moved with compassion at the sight of the man stripped and beaten by robbers (Luke 10:25-37). This weekend we are having our summer mission appeal. Fr. Sospeter Shole from the Shinyanga Diocese of Tan-zania (Africa) will be joining us for our weekend liturgies and make the appeal. The Diocese of Shinyanga is located in the Northwest of

Tanzania as one of the member Dioceses of the Lake Zone, in Mwanza metropolitan.

D A :

Seminars

The Diocese has 64 major and senior seminarians. They are studying Philosophy and Theology within the country. Your donation will support the Diocese and pay for their Tuition and fees. They will become priest in one to seven years. The seminary started to be build in 1998. The seminary is lacking the necessary facilities such as: chapel, laboratory, dinning hall, staff rooms, learning and teaching materials, books, and supplies. The diocese is pleading for support from all friends to assist in the construction of these important structures. With your generous support we will be able to complete this facility and insure priests for the future care of the Church.

Construction of Hostel for Priests A building to be use for accommodating priests who are attending workshops, seminars, meetings, and other pastoral gatherings has bee in develop-ment for three years. The diocesan faithful have already contributed financially towards the building. After completion, the building will have the capacity to accommodate 40 priests.

Your support in any of these items will be highly appreciated.
